The bodies have several layers to them (referred to as onion skins) and there is a call to get rid of these to reduce complexity.  If that happens then existing  appliers for a body that has a on/off switch for BoM would still not work properly due to the missing layers.  Of course that could be catered for if there was a converter that could be worn to make appliers work with the BoM layers instead but that doesn't look likely either because it has been said that BoM isn't going to have script support initially at least.

So this seems to leave three possibilities for full backwards compatibility (for bodies at least):

1. The bodies keep their onion skins and are compatible with appliers and BoM via a BoM on/off switch.

2. The vendor has to ship both BoM and layered versions of the body in the same pack to cater to both types of people.  This option will likely end up with badly fitting mesh eventually as clothing vendors make their clothes more snug to the (onion skin-less) BoM body which will cause clothes to poke in the onion skin versions.

3. People keep their existing bodies and use them for appliers and use the newer BoM version for the system layers.  Also see #2 for possible breakage.

LL have taken great care in the past not to break compatibility where possible and so I am somewhat hopeful that existing appliers on existing bodies will still work.

For my part, if there is no ability for BoM and appliers to sit side-by-side on an update of the same body or if I cannot buy new appliers or mesh that fits after a while then I will simply stop buying new content and use the existing content I have with the current body I have.  Worst case scenario, I can become a cube avatar ?

Why exclusive? I will tell you what will happen: folks will wear 3 levels of onion appliers over BOM (given their skin designers even release BOM skins)... that is what will happen - sorry to disillusion you...

Take away the layers and folks will (IMHO justified) be pissed.

As if wearing even two applier layers at once is reliable...

If the creators are wise they'll include both versions in any such update: onion and non-onion.

Understatement.

I'm hoping creators will release a new body that will have the base skin layer be BoM compatible with one onion layer (the clothing layer as it is not an exact copy of the body with allowances for butt and breast cleavage) that is applier compatible.

But then sitting here writing this I'm reminded of the nightmare this is going to be if it's released without the ability to use appliers with BoM. How long will it take skinners to make all those system layers so that we can use our favorites skins with the new BoM bodies???

Most bodies use the LL UV, which means the only thing these skin makers need to do is put the textures onto a system layer with no additional work.

Some skins might need to adjust minor details around seams or toes/fingers.

Bodies like the Aesthetic won't be compatible with BoM but I doubt they care.

Well just because it can be done with the flick of a wrist does not mean it will be done. Reasons for not doing it would be:

  1. simply does not want to
  2. not very active in SL anymore
  3. concerns about uneducated shoppers complaining the system avi has no toes all day long
  4. existing minimal but critical devations form the SL UV to ensure skin makers and makeup makers stick to one specific head brand
  5. stubborness
  6. greed - when you are good why sell a universal applier when you can sell each seperatley getting double income from those with more than one head/body

I do not say all those are good reasons, but some designer might decide not to on one or more reasons named above or any other I didn't come up with yet.

PS: there is no need for specialised BOM bodies to layer appliers on BOM - users can use the BOM to omega tool to apply the BOM to their lowest onion and thus pile up 3 more onions on top of the BOM... (tats over system cloth? HURRAY!)

I totally agree, but the question was "how long," to which the answer is "almost no time." Opting not to do it in the first place is a possibility but unrelated to the question itself.

I also pointed out the "bodies won't change and you can wear mesh layers over BoM" a few posts back.

As usual, can't give an exact date. Bakes on Mesh requires a bunch of different back end services to be rolled out first. We're currently in the process of rolling out the inventory service. After that will be simulator changes, followed by the baking service. After all that, we can look at promoting the viewer. So while we think Bakes on Mesh is reasonably feature complete, it's likely to take a while to run through all those steps.

Someone asked when BoM would be ready in the animesh thread and this was Vir's response. Thought it would be good to have that info here as well.

Vir’s answer was interesting, it must mean all those changes needed were “rolled into” the Project Viewer but will be “unrolled” for the actual implementation. Cool!

"Rolling out" is not the same thing as "unrolling."

English is weird, I know, but "rolling out" in this context IS implementation.

Has something changed? logged in today and my body is just showing 'baked on mesh upper' and 'baked on mesh lower' all over it. But the nails are still visible...

That happened to me yesterday when I logged into the non-BOM viewer. BOM came back when I used the project viewer. Ugh, this means will have to switch to another mesh avatar copy for non-BOM viewers..

I have a few questions. I tried to read all the posts, I probably missed something, so forgive me if the questions were already answered. Will the mesh bodies still need alpha cuts, or the old alpha layers will work on the mesh bodies? And will the skin appliers work on mesh bodies when bakes on mesh will be released - or only classic skins will work?

BOM will make old alpha layers work on mesh bodies. It should be no trouble to keep skin appliers working for bodies, you could easily have a toggle between BOM and appliers.

It's up to the creators to keep their body updates backwards-compatible, which is also why I'm worried because I have little faith in the major mesh body brands implementing things optimally/ideally like they haven't up to this point.

Personally I expect there to be an applier for BOM, with the body unchanged.

Sillly question: How will the BoM then work with partial mesh bodies? Wait let me guess: It's a useless piece of junk that cannot deal with those?

What "partial mesh bodies" are you referring to? The limits are that anything using the body texture sections (head, upper, lower) will automatically turn off that section of the default avatar. It won't work with hands and feet only unless they're textured with one of the other channels, and honestly that would be a waste of time. However, it will work fine on something like a head without a body or a body without a head, or a centaur that replaces half the default body.

Next question - what did Bakes-on-Mesh do to you? Can you show me on this stuffed animal? I'm fascinated that certain people in this forum section have decided, not that they simply aren't interested in it, but that it must be opposed with melodramatic flapdoodle.

Mesh bodies will need either alpha cuts or to be set to use alpha masking by their creators (assuming they're no modify.) As far as skin appliers, Bakes-on-Mesh simply uses specific textures that are replaced by the bake. It would be completely possible to use an applier to apply a "fixed" texture to the same body that would otherwise use Bakes-on-Mesh, providing that the body maker allows using appliers at all.

So instead of just wearing a mesh head and mesh bento fingers I am forced to wear a mesh body for that little bit or neck or I can use no BoM? Was that what you all hoped for? Making folks wear complexity bombs when not needed?

Nothing, I just think the hopes put into it are overrated. Why do you take everything I find bad in it as a personal offense?
