  1. Yeah i see it done sometimes, with prim plants even. I use a shadow alpha prim under retangular and rounded prims, those are easy to make in photoshop, but how to make shadow following the contours of more complex prim builds i have no idea either. I will follow suggestions here too It seems so interesting to learn how it's done
  2. Despite the basic things we might learn here in SL and maintain that, according to my personal experience over years high quality content from a texture point of view is made as follows Always start a new layer in Photoshop with 2048 x 2048 144 DPI (instead of the standard 72 DPI). When a design is finished, you change it back to 1024 x 1024 and keep the 144 DPI. The result is that jaggyness at round edges are smooth after upload and apply it. 512 x 512 144 DPI of course might be more responsible for users of more classic computers, however the highest quality results are at 1024 x 1024 x 144 DPI. The best performance with mid quality will be at 512 x 512 72 DPI.
  3. Well at least LL's direction seems clear... its development is going to be more approached like a game... Howerver i am a "grandmom" in SL where it was "Your World, Your Imagination"... later it became "Your World.. Your money we want in any way we can"... Moreover, LL clearly lacked any vision while major problems never had been resolved. Technically SL is still at the state of a niche. There is has been a lot of window dressing like a website with the atmosphere like IMVU, a new IU for for the viewer, and all kind of tweaks and geeks later on to get more ppl into it. However the progressive development of new signups remained flat, daily logins dropped and montly logins remains flat since 2007. This all has a technical background, lack of real vision and lack of main stream connections and licenses. However, the way SL is fabricated it cannot handle 100k of concurrent logins where IMVU got over that number years ago. Perhaps these known faces from the gaming industry will be able to turn it around... interesting, but SL should not be about: walking alone amongst artificial life. For me it would be totally boring. If i was to play a console game i would have done so. SL to me is still interesting, but i do hope it is not going to be degraded into some boring game.
  4. Actually my problems are very little since i went back to viewer 1.23.5. Some old glitches i have at moments like sim crossings on Islands. For some reason on the mainland crossings for me are flawless and smooth. Very rarerly my avatar starts to drift which is already an issue in SL since the day it came about. And very sometimes the server i am at looses connection so i get the message that i logged out but can still IM. However, usually i can be on for hours without any problem. I set my bandwidtht at 1000 max. Much higher is possible, however Torley has a video tut that SL hardly ever users more than 1500. I've learned early on that setting the bandwidth too high results in loss of the internet data stream and therefore all kind of glitches such as tp fail, avatar drifting et cetera. On average i see SL using around 1000 maximum so i keep it there and my SL is near perfect. All in all the old and known glitches, but overall, my SL with 1.23.5 is very fast and smooth. Nothing in life is ever perfect btw
  5. Welcome back Victoria. Since your 2 years LL has introduced to viewer 2 and since the new CEO at LL updates have been very very veyr quick. We are already at viewer 3. The full screen option is out and performance has dropped for too many. This is what is going on... Viewer 2 has already been highly under huge fire since only a handful seems to like it, but worse... with each quick release of an update came terrible show stop problems for too many users. HTTP textures and HTTP inventory doesn't work well for everybody and worse... for Duo core computers FPS has dropped significant since 2.8, like from an averge 35-45 to 1-5. I don't know if that is fixed yet. Meanwhile the Pheonix viewer and its team was busted for creating a visrus attack. Since then LL works with an approved list of 3rd party viewers. But to me... i just don't trust that and the conditions from LL to get on that list aren't that professional. I waved 2/3 goodbye after a half year of all kinds of misery and went back to viewer 1.23.5. It's fast, stable and easy to use. You can find it here: http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Old_versions 1.23.4 also still works, but viewers before 1.23 won't let login anymore since Adult content has been introduced with 1.23. 1.23 will stay available according to Philip Linden/Rosedale as long as 2/3 is not to full satisfactory. And they are not. It has been winked by Philip that he is thinking of redesigning the 2/3 viewer. From my expection, 1.23.5 will be supported at least another year untill we get a viewer that actually works better for a larger group. Again, a warm welcome back and have fun
  6. Will Wright Is an American video game designer and co-founder of the game development company Maxis, now part of Electronic Arts. In April 2009 he left Electronic Arts to run "Stupid Fun Club", an entertainment think tank in which Wright and EA are principal shareholders. Hmm, not exactly a surpise since it was announced that we are going to see simulated life forms in SL and both the CEO and this guy are going back to Electronic Arts. Perhaps we are heading towards SECOND SIMS lol
  7. You should not have to apologize to anyone. What you have is experienced is the average in SL. It is one of the reasons i hardly buy anything in SL at all., and started to make my own things... and to do it different in SL too. For you... i would say it is typical for SL... unfortunate ( and most sad. Friendly or at least empatic merhants are very very rare in SL just for you to understand about SL. Why this is i never have understood. I think because in SL too many are here with a contact disorder or some sorts, or they just want your money and then you can go to... ... Most here in the blog are merchants and shop holders so i would not expect a friendly warm or any empatic reply here ( They cover eachother here, and in the meanwhile you are treaten like some child. True but so sad. There are some who are very different, but they are rare. Also... not about naming names here... that is something which is being uphold here due to merchant´s interests and it isn't true. It would be most silly if there were no platform to put any complaint if the merchant treats you so poor. I've done it very often here and i never had any problem. So, don't let you get that bullied, and for now... so sorry, but the majority of shop holders and merchants are cross, bold, unemphatic and very very very unwilling in SL... SAD ! And i am glad to be not one of those SLcould be just so much more a better place instead of all the super egoism and unwarmth
  8. Hi, I was wondering why so much in SL after all these years still is so aggressive like. As per example: Warning! You have entered private property, linda Brynner! You have 10 seconds to leave the area, or else you will be automatically forced to leave. This hard bold blunt language style we still see all around the grid. Why? Why not like: Hi Linda Brynner. Sorry, but you have entered a private area. Please do leave within 10 seconds to prevent you sending home. Sorry for the inconvenience. It seems a bit more elegant instead of thinking being in a police state LOL
  9. Ok i have had it... formal greeters... and auto greetings with a sheer rain of drop down menus offering all kinds of unasked things. One of these days that i look at SL and think... this is becoming really bloody stupido. Why would anyone think it is a joy for visitors being so formal with rl staff like speech and a rain of menu's. Being very exploring i seem to have bumped into many places lately with an official greeter, very forced upon dress codes... ugh, what a mess. IM: Hello... i am ... how can i help you. Ughh that is so cold... I know i am here and i can find my way ty. I mean there are so many warm friendly ways to greet ppl, like. Hey how are you, thanks for coming here, have fun. Why being so chilly formal. They should be grateful i was coming since SL is so empty on many places, instead of playing 'sim god'. This is SL.. have fun. Be spontaneous and be silly even. Why being so formal whilst being staff. To create a distance, formal play? Most silly... I am very outspoken so i just respond how i feel about it. I don't very much care if anybody owns 100 sims and is on the showcase, or just has a parcel. In a case i was teleported home when i outspoke my annyance to the greeter, and asked him why being so formal. Dunno if i am banned or not, but no matter, that is SL, i don't mind. I just don't understand why being chilly rl like formal and drop all kinds of things i don't want is supposed to be fun... Hm yes, we could say i am a bit annoyed today. But i am not at some official rl place, sjees. I was in SL.
  10. Actually it doesn't seem to be Mac related. It's 2.7.4 and higher in general. FPS drop started already with 2.7.3. 2.7.2 works fine for me as 1.23.5 Many complaints i do hear are from Duo Core users btw, Linux, Windows, Mac, but i don't know if it Duo core related really. I think one of the problems is that SL never had been designed to run well on multi processor computers and they are more or less the standard now. LL have experimented however always had a poor integration of that matter. But eventually i think it bores down on very very poor software development and rushing new iterations since the new CEO. SL has become a typical IT organization for that matter. Many IT companies these days are run lke that But wasn't LL still in the process of hiring a QA officer? Poor person if found... because it all starts with decent organization. But well they know... if that is a comfort... lol
  11. Hi, There are many things to try.... The pic refers to my place, but no matter, it is about the general idea for SL. Be aware that the offical viewer of SL is very borked since version 2.7.3. It delivers a very low basis FPS (1 - 10) which you experience with "choppy". Same experience like me and for many others. Actually SL peeks at 1000 / 1200 Mbit so i always set it at 1000 for the highest speedy experience. But unfortunate the SL viewer is seriously borked since 2.7.3. You might try good old 1.23.5 which will keep on working btw and is perfect for a more speedy experience. http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Old_versions
  12. Darn, i thougt it was the solution here... not ! I did follow everything as i read. When i link it, the whole linked set moved no matter how i set it up, hing prim used et cetera. Me too had a box made, 8 prims together with 4 bottles of wine. and i wanted to have the lid open/close upon touch. I can, but just not the lid linked This should be made much more simple in SL instead of going through a whole lecture... pfew. Well it was worth a try again.
  13. Wow some comp ! I want it ! lol I looked up the specs. I can't say it enough... Video memory is not the most interesting part since SL hardly will use 400 or so maxed, but DDR3 is a good average standard (speed of the memory). I really don't know it there are cards already with DDR5. Specially the main processors will provide the basis FPS, with a Quad it should be not too bad, however you might experience some lag with all maxed out. Very important is the Buswidth of your Vid card which is the full 256 version, excellent. It will draw textures the fastest. http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=nl&sl=en&u=http://www.nvidia.com/object/product-geforce-gtx-560ti-us.html&ei=ruqATtSMJcnWsgbrudm2Dg&sa=X&oi=translate&ct=result&resnum=1&ved=0CCUQ7gEwAA&prev=/search%3Fq%3DGEFORCE%2BGTX%2B560%2BTi%26hl%3Dnl%26prmd%3Dimvnsr Some complain that they have an upmarket newest pc and then they see a very laggy SL because their card only appear to have a 128 bits video buswidth, what a pity since it becomes the real bottleneck in the whole setting. They may experience high FPS, but slow rendering of textures. But your's is far above SL´s recommendation. All in all far above average i would say, unfortunate the official SL viewers are very borked since off 2.7.3... more than ever that is to my experience.
  14. Hi, What i would do is be a bit selective really. Just go to places and give friendship time. The grant of entrustment is a path in all our lives. Even more in sl i would say since it is the internet. I can't agree actually that friendship in SL isn't possible. I have met the most wonderful people with whom i kept contact rl because they live close to me. Their rl was very ok, but nothing in life is perfect. Everyone has issues here and there, and more and less. I do agree that there are many in SL out of misery in rl. I am sorry to hear that, but that is the exact reason why i do strongly would advice you to be very selective and like rl, do build entrustment rather than just jumping in. It is not interesting to have a 50+ friendslist just for the numbers lol. It is about the quality. Ach für mich ist die Deutsche Sprache einer mitt historie. Super, perfekt kann ich es nicht mehr, aber ich mag die Sprache sehr gerne
  15. Your video card is an Nvidia GT 525M, 1024 DDR3 video mem, 128 bits bus. That one is not exactly the fastest one these days. The performance is exactly the same benchmarked as the Nvidia 9800 M GS, however there is a difference. 525M renders more slow. http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GT-525M.43889.0.html The point is that video mem is not so important for SL. SL hardly uses more than 400 or so. The main thing is the bus which is only 128 bits in your case, uuugh. My HP notebook of 2006 had that and everything started to render very slow 2 years after further development of SL. 192 or 256 is what you need for SL. Compare it with a rl Bus, the bigger, wider or higher it is, the more ppl it can carry. Raw unrendered data in this case from your internet to your screen all rendered.. With 128 you need a lote more patience for everything to render in SL i'm afraid But to soften it a bit, SL from version 2.7.3 upto 3.x is heavely bugged. Many went back to 2.7.2 and 1.23.5 even. But still that 128 bits bus, don't expect wonders in SL.. so sorry. You might try 1.23.5 or 2.7.2 and see how it works, turn off HTTP textures and dynamic shadows.
  16. Yeah it is a common annoyance. The usual way to find out is to open an LM and see if info comes up. If not the place is either relocated or gone. Perhaps we could get an auto message, or perhaps those LM's would to be automatically placed in an LM obsolete folder, so we know. But i think it would be a huge load on the servers. Basically LM's are fixed hyperlinks instead of being dynamic.
  17. Looking at your specs it seems over the top even for SL so it should be no problem, untill i read 'Crossfire'... I don't want to spoil your fun, but Crossfire ( a pair of AMD graphics cards ) usually has always been a real pain with SL; it can't handle them well. Can you shut down one of the pair? It should be solved then. Best of luck.
  18. Oh dear, that must be a scary experience to think not being able to IM, uuggh. But no worries, probably a bug.
  19. I did use them before, but many regard it as spam and my visitors went down. This was 2008. They are very unpersonal and a huge annoyance because as a visitor you are drawn out of your own play. The same for auto LM's, notecards, drop down menus... they are uuggh. Not what you want when you come over for a play. And i agree that i am smart enough to understand i am welcome and i can take my own LM's et cetera. But many shop owners like them for their own play i know. But beware of mixed reactions. What i do today is heaving my pic on my counter, so ppl can see the face behind the shop and see if i'm online or not. It is more friendly i would say.
  20. No matter, with Ctrl and the mouse weel i can zoom in your micro text lol. Hi there you are not alone. When version 3.7.3 came out and later 2.8 i hear and see many similar complaints. Even for users with the most up-to-date computers. One of the problems is that HTTP textures does not work well for many. What i did understand it depends on routers. You can try to do without the HTTP option. Make sure you login as Advanced. After login, in the Advanced menu or Development menu ( you can activate those menus in your preferences ) turn off HTTP textures. For me it makes a grand world of a difference. HTTP textures has been introduced since 2.0, but i always had it turned off and all loaded normal very fast. !! However, still 2.7.3 and up with 3 there is a container ship full with bugs !! I simply started to refuse all of those viewers. Many went back to 2.7.2, and even 1.23.5 ( like me ) but still try to turn off HTTP... even in version 2. Dynamic shadows of course does have a heavy impact on performance too. You might turn them off in your Graphic Preferences ( Ctrl Shift P ) or ( Cmd Shift P for Mac ) Good luck. For me it has worked wonders. I don't understand why LL actually does not see why they have been making all worse than ever. I think they have too many staff by now who hardly to not ever use SL.
  21. Lol, could we please refrain from the myth "class". Class ended in 2010, period. All server hardware is the same now, roll outs of server versions too, At this moment all Mainland runs on software server version 11.09.09.240513 The software server versions are 11.09.09.240507 on Islands. There are no differences in speed anymore when class server type ended last year already. There are no class 6 servers either. We do have RC regions in SL these days, nick names Blue steel, Le Tigre, Magnum and Snack. These are not more than existing chosen hardware serves for LL to pilot a new iterated server software version in 4 blocks in their agni region data warehouse for 6 days, and then roll them out to the main grid every Tuesday. The RC chosen servers receive a new software iteration for the next 6 days a day after the main grid roll out from the 4 blocks of RC servers, so each Wednesday. In a nut shell: SL agni region hardware and sofware are homogene since last year. The only difference can be if a region was chosen to be in one of the pilot RC's server blocks Blue steel, Le Tigre, Magnum and Snack or not. LOL
  22. Each and every world incident is a severe torment for men kind. 9/11 Has been a traumatic experience for far too many. World incidents & maximum Death toll: 1931 China floods: 1,800,000 1945 WWII: 66,000,000 Vietnam: 3,1000,000 2001Twin Towers, Pentagon and the other flight crash: 3,000 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami: 230,210 2008 Cyclone Nargis: 138,000 2010 Haïti Earthquake: 316,000 Iraq war: 150,000 Afghanistan war: 2,710 USA: appr. 300 mill. inhabitants.Rest of the world: appr. 7,000 mill. With all respect to all who have suffered and have been traumatized, but we can plant over a zillion flags... however, we do need to be aware that intensity is determined by media exerted upon public receptive to rally around the flag effect. Minds are formed and strengthened by singular obtuse nation's institutions, hideous group force and unwise statements from so called leaders, resulting in a disproportionate overstatement about the 9/11 incident. We do need to get over it and refrain from exaggeration since this fills a self fulfilling profecy of disruption zooming into differences of dominant groups rather than zooming into world harmony which the youth respects and already practices more than ever !! It is the individual 'program' giving in to not want to based on a society's self propelled untruth the public has been swallowing over years. By all means do have a nice event, i dearly wish you that, but all the media attention at this very moment makes me very tired, specially having seen the public behaviour in the last decade
  23. Ok, but HD video no i don't actually do need that since i hate toying with tech stuff, but ok nice info. I just play my SL, not esle is needed as long as it is efficient, easy and smooth and up quality content which i can perfectly create and see. Lol, rest assured then that 1.23.5 is still strong for me.
  24. So your eyes can see the difference between your 151.7 and 60 FPS? nop. LOL. Ehmm, and likely you LCD panel is limited to 60 (perhaps 100 if it is up market or a quality TV). But sure it looks macho hahah. Eyes don't see any difference above appr. 17 btw. But 5 good grief that was a pain. 60 Works for me excuisite. <--- and 3Rd party... Nop i'm not going to touch it. But hey, your cool with your 151. It does look cool:smileyvery-happy:
  25. 1.23.5, that is 50-60 fps fast reliable and super easy to use. Very very productive and efficient for me as High Definition creator. Shared internet on a prim? Not needed since it isn't shared in any way. Avatar physics. Not needed, i am always wearing quality wear underwire (* laugh !) 64m prims, uhmm wel i do use a simple workaround by a script, it is even possible to size prims to 0.001 LOL. The Mesh hype. It's the same as a sculpty, Mesh is differently exported and imported. However the two different technics behind the curtain can't exactly excite me much. The new search. It can't excite me much. It is even much more of a mess. Invitation to other social media. Nop not needed. I am in SL to play SL, not FB or whatever. Dynamic shadows. Not needed, it is most irritating, and drops fps hard. But it is irritating anyway. DOF. Lol Photoshop does a way better job. 3Rd party viewers... Nop, not ever. I have seen to much security compromises on that matter. All in all i am not motivated yet to change to V3. V2 was a dramatic experience like i was a beta tester instead of an SL player. Innovation is good, but without serious degradation, and all the promo's about V3 are pimped as per usual. What you see first is not what you get SMILING
