  1. Hi, Your computer is too light. The main processor seems ok, but... You could expand to at least to 2 Gb main memory total. Main problem is the Graphics card, the Memory Interface Width.... 64 (ugh)... which was ok in 2006. Nowadays, 192 is a minimum, but 256 makes a real difference. You could find a cheap 9800 card, but be aware that SL itself has become even more demanding since viewer 2.8. Since then the rendering code has changed completely. Therefore i do not use the official viewer anymore but stayed at V1 based which has a more efficient rendering code. The reason LL changed was due to intellectual rights with open source. But even with a 9800 SL is not going to be fast with the V2/3 official viewer. Upgrade your card and i would advice to try a V1 based viewer such as Phoenix. It has all the new features. But still do make sure you have a Memory Interface Width of 256 in your graphics card (usually the 9800 card has).
  2. Hi, LOL, uuhm no, abandon is much more simple by just a few clicks and ppl can buy it from LL anyway for L$1 per metre. The land business in in SL really is history, sorry. Thanks
  3. One of the theories is that after a solar / gas bang a lot of gas debris floated in space around that bang, cluttering together as different gas balls. When the smaller bits cooled down they became planets with actual magma like dense mass. The sun is so big and heavy that it's still in that state. However the magma like planets were contantly bombared with cooled down left over debris in space from the bang. This bormbardment caused new magma/rocky like debris dust around the earth. When the earth wasn't bombarded anymore the newly created debris dust around the planet also started to clutter together finally becoming the moon. At the time there was no life at all since the earth still was in transition from magma to a very thin crust cooling down. It explains why the chemical composition of moon rock is earth like. If this theory is true the moon as a whole mass is indeed a bit younger than the earth, but not by much.
  4. Although i have never been a fan of 3rd party viewers the problem for many users is that the original viewer doesn't work well for them anymore. I have no sympathy for extra options the official viewer doesn't provide since i believe in a pure equal experience for all users, however a huge problem since V2.8 is that the rendering code has been changed in such a way that it makes the official viewer almost unusable for a huge pool of users, even if their computer is beyond recommended requirements. I can login with V3, but i think i would login a lot less because of a basic FPS cut by half with the new rendering engine. With Phoenix - which uses the V1 rendering engine - i get an average of 35 basic fps as i always had ( i would be satisfied with 15-20), but V2.8 - 3 brings my fps to a halt like 10 average and drops to 3 with the same graphical settings. In too many areas i can't move consquently and makes the thing sheer unusable. There is nothing i haven't tried and LL doesn't seem to be able to resolve this. Consequently i am forced to Phoenix. And the copy infringement? That's as old as SL back to the days we had the official viewer only. Is it really a high priority worry? Not really to my opinion, we are just talking about some 3d pixels. It's like somebody has driven a car too fast so i call the government and they forbid that car brand for everybody. Really a few steps too far i would say.
  5. Hi, Interesting, for me it's the other way around. First i see the big prims and then the smaller onces just a bit later. This is in all viewers i have tried: original SL, Firestorm, Phoenix, 1.23.5. Perhaps it depends on your computer. 3D objects calculations are done by the computer's main processor if i'm correct and the graphics processor eventually shows them on screen as well as the textures. My computer: CoreDuo, Nvidia 9800 MGT, Vista Home 32 bits.
  6. A GTX560TI is great if it is a recent build with at least 256 memory bandwidth. The first editions only had 192 if i'm correct. There is a limited edition available too now with 320 memory bandwidth. More memory bandwidth makes a huge world of difference. Make sure the card has at least 256 of it. I would avoid Msi however. They are cheaper and less reliable. But the motherboard... gosh that is so old (4 years or so?). A huge no no really. SL has avdvanced too much since then. At least go for an i5 or i7 (i3 is too weak). I agree that Asus is a very solid platform btw. Best of luck.
  7. Hi Luci, The GT555M is faster than the 540... that is if the 555M is delivered with 192 memory bandwidth. The standard version has only 128 which is the same as the 540. However i would try to find a notebook with a 580M onboard. It has a memory bandwidth of 256. The difference with 128 is night and day, especially textures do load very slow with a 128. 192 is something in between, but 256 usually is so fast and SL is already so slow. You need all the possible power for SL these days. But ok, 192 can be a acceptable compromise; such might be out of date sooner of course for SL. Only the Dell XPS 17 and Alienware M14x are delivered with a 555M with 192. All the rest are 128's But do ask the sales person explicitely. http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GT-555M.41933.0.html 560M's and 570M's are always shipped with 192. 580M's always with 256. http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GTX-560M.48313.0.html http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GTX-580M.56636.0.html Best of luck
  8. Hi Zak, You seem to use Phoenix like me, but the 1.6.1 (1691) was an urgent release to comply with added compliance rules by LL for 3rd party viewers and to comply to direct delivery. This is a great tutorial, but i wonder if Phoenix 1.6.1. actually provides wearable mesh without bugs. There was a bug in the previous 1600 build that if RLv was enabled, wearable mesh was bugged. But i still do read many bugs about mesh, so it could be the Phoenix viewer which went from an experimental (1600) stage very fast to the 1691 just to comply to LL. Have you tried singularity or the official SL viewer? Btw, can i use your tutorial for Blender 2.49? Or is an upgrade needed to 2.5, thanks.
  9. You have been out of SL for a few years? Oh gosh the graphics have become ever more demanding on hardware, and the viewer has been totally reworked. Yeh try the latest driver and see if it resolves the issue.
  10. The 560 is a top graphics card so no wonder no difference is seen... lol. SL is to be for average cards not just top notch. Many log in with a notebook with an average or a tad older card but perfectly within recommendations. Many do suffer all of the sudden since V2.8. But no not you the 560 is a top of the range card LOL.
  11. You can still report and insert the IM. Usually SL can be like this, better to ignore such and mute/block instantly. I don't see how the person could possibly crash your computer anyway. Such ppl aren't worth any reply not even one word. And i suppose you just want to play SL, so just mute/block them instantly and move on i would say.
  12. That the rendering enfine is changed i know as the official V1 viewers came with two rendeing libraries in the Progam folder: llkdu.dll and llkdu.dll.2.config. At a certain point LL had forbidden 3rd V1 party developers to use these; missing these files the V1 viewer automatically renders via the openJG library which is slower. The work around was to copy those files from the official V1 program folder over to the 3rd party one, and voila the speed was back. But SL wanted to end that workaround too so they hard coded using a different engine... And there we have it... sofar the open source policy of LL... Nowadays all 3rd party developers have to copy the code into their development... ending up with the same sh*t... pardon my word.
  13. Oh you're not alone in this. The only solution is to hold on to a V1 based viewer which delivers all new thingies. I haven't seen any advice yet really working well. Many have experience a serious drop FPS since viewer 2.8 and derivatives based on it like Firestorm. I had so many tickets raised which all have been replied to by LL in a decent manner... try this, try that... etc. Since then there is nothing i haven't tried, even experimenting with 3D settings of my Nvidia card. All V1 based equivelant viewers provide a massive higher FPS. This is a know issue. At the moment i am using the stable Phoenix 1.6.1, build 1691 (1600 build was experimental, buggy and to be skipped) and i still have the official 1.23.5. Both give me 50-70 FPS with a draw distance set at 200m. I have mesh now, and all other newer gizmo's. And i can use the shadows at 10 FPS. I have experienced with different skins in FS, and they seem to make a difference of ~5 FPS. So it seems due to the UI. When i use exactly the same graphical settings with a V2/3/4 equivelant viewer, i can hardly get over 20 FPS at draw distance 128 which is really madness. When i visit a sim with many alpha textures (nature/plants), i can hardly move around because FPS drops to ~4 (no shadows enabled). I have heard many complaints about it even for users with the latest computers. LL has changed the rendering engine i did understand however LL refuses to admit it. And the 2/3/4 UI is a major culprit. It really is the coding, i can't detect another plausible reason. It must be the UI swallowing FPS badly. Bad, bad, bad. Luckely Phoenix is up-to-date and fast.
  14. Uhhh, except that the hand anims don't work in this free verion LOL. I suppose you need to buy anims from them before it does. The eye expresions do work only.
  15. That's a cool thing anyway. Thanks, i am going to play with this, it's funny
  16. Uhh, ok i installed it, set all graphics the same as my Phoenix... no avatar physics, HTTP textures off... VBO on and off. Make sure my bandwidth is set to the optimum. So... what's the big occasion ?! FPS is as bad as it always was. Hardly average at 15 and deep to 5 at very busy areas. Phoenix: average 35-40, deepest 15. Still an unchanged difference --> uninstalled pronto ! (uhh i don't use Danish either). I wonder what it is that holds FPS in these newer UI styled viewers back. Phoenix has the same functionality and high FPS.
  17. Is the increase of FPS a confirm? I have tried all other versions and was very dissapointed. The reason i went back to a V1 based Viewer since SL 2.8 and all FS versions is that they both crippled my FPS so bad that they were unusable, and i wasn't a fan of the V2/3 UI already. Strangly the new Phoenix 1.6.1 has all the latest and newest funcionality and FPS rocks for me. I can even use shadows with a decent FPS on my 2 year old Asus Core, Nvidia 9800M GS. FS 4.0.1 could be an option now because of the FUI, but has FPS generally increased?
  18. Your netbook is very very very underpowerd, specially the graphic processor, but an Atom really is far below basic requirements too. It's as simple as that at this very moment with that computer i'm so sorry.
  19. Using a 24 inch screen and Phoenix 1.6.1 (V1 style) working wonders. The problmen with V2/3/4 based viewers is that floaters, and especially title bars are too thick. V1 at least has much finer and elegant floaters to keep the screen more open.
  20. Well the method i use it is said to be against the Tos, however in my 6 years of experience i have discovered that it isn't at all. However the first you would see is a warning from some forummer here to state to delete the name. The method? Just expose their SL account name and SL brand name here... job done. And expose their sl name anywhere you can on forums, blogs, feedback possibilties, ratings, etc. Against the Tos? Nope, just a myth kept up because many here at the forums are merchants. Controversial? Yes. What is against the Tos is to reveale info related to rl, but an sl name isn't that in fact. So... a hard but only way to weed them out. It's how i do it
  21. At least an i5 and i would not go lower than the Nvidia 525 model. The reason is the memory bus width. 525 And higher models have 128, 192, 256 or even higher. The 520 can be equiped with either 64 or 128. But 128 Is the bare minimum for 3D. 256 Or higher is best (but at a price). Under 128 makes SL unsuable (64 worked in SL of 2004-2007, but not nowadays). Nividia works best for SL. http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GT-525M.43889.0.html
  22. Well i did scratch my hair too when i noticed that new feature. I don't use it and i don't check them at all. Ppl can IM (-> email) me, leave a notecard or send me an email. Really i don't need any more scattered around ways of communication.
  23. Yes indeed, apply the UUID in a script to be applied in an object, make it full bright, take a screen shot of 1 face of the object, save it as full perm to your computer, then open it into Photoshop, change the dpi to 144, cut and crop it to 256x256, 512x512 or 1024x1024 pass the sharpness filter 1x, adjust the light curve in PS to resemble the original as close as possible. Upload it into SL. DCMA n/a in this case, lol. Voila. Mostly the same or better than the original Bon chance!
  24. Gosh i have never ever liked bling (it is so trashy and unrealistic even). The worst are with glow and particles emitting, pfff However bling seems an American and British trend of the recent past in RL, and 'trashcult' seems the major trend in SL so many creators in SL seem to have their mind set on shine all the way i suppose. It's one of the reasons i have started to create my own subtle fine jelewry ;(
  25. About 3 years ago the forum was indeed very alive, however the problem was that most of it was very unfriendly, untolerant and very crude, sadly. I remember my first days on it and i was so shocked that i didn't touch it for a long time and then tried again. Same thing, but i kinda learned to ignore the rubbish, but it was very ver bad. What LL wanted was a friendly polite forum and without RL matters. This is the result. Appearently many ppl want to be behave crude and blunt on forums? The old school SL players are on some other forum. I believe it is http://www.sluniverse.com/php/ I tried it once, but the responses were kinda black humor like. Not my thingy. But they are there these days i understand.
