  1. In a year much has changed regarding login. Make sure you have either viewer 1.23.5 or 2.4, or 2.2 even. With those you can login. You can find them here: http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Old_versions I would be conservative regaring upgrading to 2.6 since it has a truck load of unresolved bugs even people not being able to login. 1.23.5 is still being supported as long as 2.x is not upto standard according to Philip Rosedale, and 2.x still seems far off. Be aware that the login has changed too. In viewer 1.23.5 you type: First name, Last name, Password. In 2.x It is First name, Space or Dot, Last name, Password, like, FirstName LastName xxxxx Or FirstName.LastName xxxxxx (mind the the dot between the first and last name) If that is not working then there is a serious issue. It would help to publish exactly the error messages you get here.
  2. Hi, i'm a user of AVG too, but i never had to set any exceptions. In my windows firewall (windows Vista) however SL made it by itself. What SL not does is make exeptions in your router's firewall. Since it makes no sense to have triple protection i turned that one off. It makes SL so much faster and more reliable. It is also necessary as a step to stream your own music into SL btw (including port forwarding which goes too far here). You can get into your router settings by typing in your webbrowser: 192.168.1.1 It is up to you of course. To my experience SL with the router firewall turned off is faster and more steady while not experiencing any more threats from the web.
  3. 2.6 Comes with a tommy truck of nasty bugs :smileysad: Just unbelievable this is out of Beta really. I experienced a significant slower load and rezzing. By coincidence i turned off HTTP-textures and then it was a lot better again. Is that borked too ? Good grief. And in 2.4 i had a micro freeze every 3 - 4 seconds. And 2.6 isn't really an alternative. It also can crash at logging out, AA and anisotropic are borked. And there are issues with saving and able to see (changed) profiles. This is some nasty piece of software at the moment bah ! My card is very well supported and the drivers are the latest. I even went back through earlier drivers (of course by using driver sweeper to avoid conflicts or effects from earlier installed drives) but it seems 2.6 is at fault. At the moment i can choose 1.23.5 and 2.6 with all the bugs. I will use the first for daily fun :smileyvery-happy:. 2.6 If absolutely necessary (e.g. outfits with multiple attachments). The Basic login has no positive effect on logged in last 30 days either. Concurrency keeps on dropping as well. Newbies i meet seem to got stuck on what to do in SL since they can't see the 'beef'. yak. Pfffff i do hope LL will get back on track, because this whole 2.6 viewer is crap at the moment and counter productive for both users and SL so it seems to me, so sad :smileysad:
  4. Well actually you just drop an alpha based texture in there (your appearance -> tattoo layer) and that is pretty much it. I don't see it much in use in SL however. An alpha based texture is a texture with a transparant back ground btw. It can also be used for tight fitting clothes.
  5. Same kind of experience here. I have turned my back on 2.x a few days ago. However my reservation for 3rd party viewers is very high since the procedure to get on the TPV isn't exactly too critical. When i finally started to use 2.x (2.4 version) in Dec. 2010 it was because it finally had become to some level of acceptance for me. Still the UI is not really to my liking. The UI looks boring, it clutters smaller notebook screen way to much and at this moment too much is broken. Also my experience with 2.x is stuttery, bumpy thus very annoying. I have a micro freeze every other 3 - 4 seconds. Very very iiritating. Actually 2.4 made me login less in the last 3 months. I went back to 1.23.5 and all is fluent and smooth. Sim crossings are hardly noticed and fps is very high and stable. My fun has come back too :smileyhappy: Not all features are supported i know, but at least my fun is back. I do hope that LL's viewer will come to a higher level. At the moment, this piece of software should never had come out of Beta stage really. It's really that bad :smileysad: And with 2.6.3 even more is broken. The only way to update my profile is to use 1.23.5. If i do that via the web or via 2.6 i get error messages and the profiles isn't updated. More and more gets broke by the day, and where does it all end :smileysad: Basic login doesn't bring a higher monthly login either. To my opinion "easy to use" has never been the real issue although Philip thinks so. The real issue has always been overall low technical quality, super slow fixing of bugs, hardly evolved inworld experience, lower graphics quality compared to other games and a bumpy moving around experience for too many since it relies strong on individual internet connections, and serious bugs never repaired. Too much is focussed on new geek stuff for the current horriblly poor developed viewer which should not be out of Beta. SL isn't about viewer geek stuff, it is about smooth, reliable inworld immersive fun your way. Having a viewer facillitating just that should be evident, rather than being confronted with serious issues 80% of the time.
  6. I used 2.x since Dec 2010 (2.4 version). But there is so much seriously borked in both 2.4 and 2.6 that i went back to 1.23.5. Borked issues are AA, Anisotrpoic, much slower texture load, micro freezes, high volatile fps, et cetera. I want to enjoy SL inworld, not experiment with the viewer 80% of the time. 2.x Should not be out of Beta stage actually. As i am never going to use 3rd party viewers 1.23.5 is very smooth, fast and easy to use for daily usage. Upto today it is the most reliable and smooth client ever. Of course some features are missed like multi attachments and more of course. Should i really need those i log in with 2.4, however for daily play 1.23.5 is perfect, smooth and very fast. Even sim crossings aren't noticed, brilliant. http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Old_versions According to Philip Linden he will let 1.23.5 alive as long as 2.x isn't upto level and it is far from it.
  7. Same problem i have. When i close iTunes (since i listen to my own music in SL) that problem was solved too. I turns out that iTunes shares a same channel on the internet connection that triggers activity for the SL viewers 1.x and 2.x. Very odd. So when i have iTunes and SL running at the same time it happens like you describe, however when i close iTunes it does not. I have not tested it with QuickTime btw. I had a ticket put in for this issue, but i found out myself and LL isn't aware of this matter so it seems, well not the customer services anyway (for wat CS at LL are worth). Perhaps more programs are intefering with SL on this matter i don't know.
  8. Ooo, that is fab advice, huggles also from me. I will try that too !
  9. Hmm, i have that now since i have viewer 1.23.5 and 2.4 installed, and earlier when i had both the main and RC viewer installed. Somehow SLurls do get messed up if more than 1 SL viewer is installed. What i did: uninstall al viewers including all user folders, restart the computer, then install just one viewer. Perhaps that could solve the issue, well it did for me actually.
  10. The one time i used V2.6 with the web based profiles i could not save changes. I could login with 1.23.5 made changes which then showed up :smileysad: I really have enough of 2.x now since so much is seriously borked that i went back to 1.23.5. I have been using 2.4 since last Dec but it is so borked and with awful screen cluttering. For me all is silky smooth now with high fps and even sim crossings are not noticed at all for me. And when i change my profile they show up on the web. Excellent.
  11. Same experience here. I went from 1.23.5 to 2.4. The latter started to have major issues like micro stutter every other 3 or 4 seconds so i upgraded to 2.6. Logging out crashes.... Problem is 2.x is full with nasty bugs. AA isn't working properly, Anisotropic filtering has no effect, when i wanted to save my profile i couldn't and the screen clutter is dreadful to a point that i logged in lesser and lesser in the last months. I also discovered many micro programs installed from twittter, myspace and facebook (which i never used), and also youtube. Are they from the web based profiles? Because when i tried it once in 2.6 i got several e-mails from social media sites. Weird. I had the programs removed. I don't know the source, but t is well know by now that micro programs are hidden in action buttons on web pages. Facebook does it for example. I hope that Linden Lab is not selling our data, really. It is common practice these days, but highly immoral. Anyway 2.x so borked and awful to look at... Therefore i reverted back to 1.23.5 yesterday and the whole experience is silky smooth, no stutter, bumps, and sim crossings are marvelous like unnoticed. Also fps is steady around 35 - 45 where it was wildly up-down between 6 and 65 in 2.x Back being a happy 1.23.5 user again :smileyvery-happy:
  12. There is too much broken thingies in 2.x... -> happy user again of 1.23.5 :smileyvery-happy: Sure features are missing, but it is such a relief how fast it is.
  13. Never ever let go for what you stand for :smileywink: IT people just live on another planet mostly, LL is no exception :smileysad:
  14. There are so many problems with 2.x that i decided to revert back to 1.23.5 today after using 2.4 and upgraded to 2.6 since Dec. AA isn't working properly, there are problems with web based profiles, anisotrpoic filtering on/off is borked, a lot of stutter and decreased performance. Me too had a sudden experience that my card wasn't recognized at some point, however it had no impact. 2.x Still was crappy as it ever was. When i use 2.4 the experience is slow and stuttery. In 2.6 AA isn't working and constant problems with profile updating. And there are so many more painful show stopping bugs. I am back in 1.23.5 and it run so smooth, even sim crossings are like silk. my fps went up from 12 - 50 to a very steady 35 - 50 with exactly the same settings. Features are missed in 1.x i know, but the movement experience is so much silkier.
  15. Actually since 2007 not has changed inworld, specially build in animations are still the same crappy stuff be had since 2002. Moreover the experience has gotten worse and worse to a point that i lost my apatite so i hardly login anymore. But today i reverted back to 1.23.5 simply because it runs silky smooth. And my motivation for SL returned. Since 2.4 i have given 2.x a chance but it is such a piece a crap that it is really unbelievable SL keeps on going to that direction. In 2.6 now AA isn't working correct anymore for many, Anisotropic on/off makes no difference, and the web based profiles have severe issues regarding saving changes and doesn't work well with IE and Google Chrome, and i don't want to be forced to use FireFox. 2.4 Was working acceptable untill my fps went bonkers and my screen showing a constant micro stutter which is terribly annoying. At the moment there is nothing i have not tried. Really nothing. And i do not ever want to use a 3rd party viewer. I don't want to spend 90% of time trouble shooting in the last months to get a smooth experience back. In 1.23.5 fps is way up in the 40-60, sim crossings go very smooth, and no stuttery experience at all. Perhaps LL could critically evaluate 2.x against 1.x and perhaps go from there again, including your request That 2.x junk is sooo junk... pffffff
  16. Hi, I have the same problem with my Duo core and viewer 2.4. I call it micro stuttering. Every 3-4 second or so my experience pauses for half a second and fps peeks wildly up and down. I gave 2.4 a chance sinde December. It was running acceptable with high fps, but lately the inworld experience has become utter super annoying caused by the mirco stuttering. When i returned to 1.23.5 all is running silky smooth. My notebook for SL is a an Asus G50Vt with an Nvidia 9800M GT card which had been a class1 notebook upto Feb this year, so it is really fast enough. There are no things i have not tried to resolve the issue really, even completely installed the computer and router again. nothing helped for 2.x. Nothing, really nothing has solved the issue while my list of experiments is super long. Really, i have tried everything. Back to silky smooth running 1.23.5 (yay!) It might work for you too :smileyhappy:
  17. What would be nice if LL went back to 1.23.5 with all benefits of 2.x (except the web based profiles btw). I gave 2.4 a chance sinde December. It was running acceptable with high fps, but lately the inworld experience has become utter super annoying caused by mirco stuttering with fps wildly peeking up and down. When i returned to 1.23.5 all is running silky smooth. My notebook for SL is a an Asus G50Vt with an Nvidia 9800M GT card which had been a class1 notebook upto Feb this year, so it is reaally fast enough. There are no things i have not tried to resolve the issue really, even completely installed the computer and router again. nothing helped for 2.x. Back to silky smooth running 1.23.5 (yay!)
  18. Most unfortunate ATI-AMD and SL aren't the best combination. However for FPS mostly the main computer core processors are responsible for FPS, nonetheless the combination with ATI isn't super. There are a few things you can try. Your computer Always start with a freshly booted computer and router. Specially router mostly need a shut down for at least for a minute or 3 at the least. Turn off the Aero based Themes in Vista and Windows7 as they use fps. Turn off Wallpapers for the same reason. Specially High Quality wallpapers use a lot of fps. Better use it for SL. Also mind that the larger your computer screen is, the lower fps you will get. For example when i use SL with my 22 inch screen attached on my notebook i get around 12 - 50 fps depending on the scene. With using my 16 inch notebook screen only, my fps is between 25 - 60. SL > Preferences Turn off VBO as this is still poorly implemented on ATI cards. Turn watershadows to minimal. Reduce Draw Distance Experiment with Hardware skinning on/off Set Maximum Bandwith to 1000 -1200 since SL doesn't ever use more. Setting lower and higher works counter productive. Experiment with Anti Aliasing set at 0 and 4 (higher isn't seen in SL to my experience). Experiment with anisotropic filter off (i can't see a difference since viewer 2.x) SL other settings Turn off classic clouds in your atmospheric settings and Scale shader clouds to 0.00 (clouds cost fps) This is what came to my mind at the moment. Best of luck :smileyhappy:
  19. Oh deary, ty for that info. I always had thought that viewer series 2.x actually had been carrying the former experimental option of multiple threads. Thus NOT.This explains that even on my dual core notebook the cpu indicatror shows 100% all the time when landing at a new place. However when i run SL and check performances in windows task management i do see 2 cpu's actually being used. probably i seem to be lucky. However cpu load even on my notebook flies up to 100% when arriving at a new place. I have resolved it in this way (it should work in Windows Vista and 7). It may work for you too. Make a new blanc short cut (i call it a clear button) on your desktop with the following proporties: Taget: %windir%\system32\rundll32.exe advapi32.dll,ProcessIdleTasks Begin in: %windir% Start SL, do not login but push that button. Quit SL, restart it and then login. I don't how it actually works since someone just told me to do this. He told me that Windows tasks stacks up cpu resources while not releasing them all after closing that task (memory leak). It actually does lower cpu load a bit after SL had been running before but without closing down the pc. However when arriving at a new place the cpu may load 100% even with a freshly started computer. But all little things may help :smileyhappy:
  20. You should be able to login at a specific location in your login screen. I don't see another solution. For example, Rundlelawn or Taravista. These are very low lag and kind neighbourhoods, and you certainly won't be greeted by nakes. Do mind that these regions are subject to rolling restarts each Tuesday of course. Best of luck.
  21. Hi, I do second what Charlotte says with some extensions. When i have this problem i try the following: 1. Shut down your computer. 2. Disconnect all cables from your router, including the power for appr. 30 sec. 3. Connect and Restart all. 4. Clear the SL cache before actually login. It should work, otherwise it is possible that your internet is overloaded in your area or there is a problem in connection somewhere between your home and LL in San Fransisco. Check your internet connection all the way from your home to Linden Lab in San Fransisco by using Visual Route 2010. It is a free piece of software you can download. In this tool enter the address of SL's login server: https://login.agni.secondlife.com/app/login/ Visual Route will start an analyses with a graph. If there is a hopping point on the internet with a problem it will report it. If there is a problem between your home and your internet provider it will show also in the graph. Packet losses should be at 0% all the way up to the login server at LL. Best of luck :smileyhappy:
  22. Oh well they are hanging around certainly. I still see one once in a while, however they hardly interact these days sadly. Perhaps because of their higher work load since the lay offs and the vast land mass they have to deal with which has substantially grown since 2006/7. Off duty i think they use alternate accounts to not get bothered inworld about SL business. Torley Linden has always been very open, however he also hardly meets and greets as he is at work at the moment you spot him. But on ocassion he does chat when he sees you as interesting LOL. The Lindens who actually interacted like Spike, Data, Mia, et cetera have been layed off sadly.
  23. If they can't build on your land and your autoreturn is set to 1 minutes, i don't see how it is possible. Check your Land settings in -> World -> Place Profile -> About Land or Region Estate. It is a matter of land settings to protect yourself :smileywink:
  24. Not exactly surprising. SL is at a steady drop since it's hype in 2007, it was still steady at 2008, but then the decline emerged bit by bit. One of the biggest reasons is that prices for 3D spaces are really rediculious while prices of high quality servers have much more than halved. Alternate SL like grids have taken over concurrency for that reason. Another major reason is of it's bad image, well here in Europe at least you are never going to say you are in SL. And then the inworld experience: way too much land for too low concurrency. Trying to find people is like walking on Long Island with only around 60k people present... Try find them lol. SL makes is very, very difficult to actually find busy places that are not traffic gamed or empty. The destination guide places are all deserted. No quality build-in AO. We can't swim, hug, kiss, shake hands, use several sitting and laying poses... etc etc etc from the beginning we arrive in SL. We STILL have these silly starter gestures from an old era. SL isn't fit for gaming either. The whole thing is... the prices are way too high for an too empty and technically hardly evolved experience.... sad. The only thing LL seems to worry about is their earning model (regions x tier) and to keep what they have, around 70 mill. income per year on tier alone. That is their sole interest... sad. And not to forget that a lot of communication between friends have gone to FB and Twitter actually. In my friendslist at least all of them except just a few. Sadly LL doesn't provide much reason to be inworld.
  25. Hi Katt, The keyword for friendship is trust and some common ground. This counts for SL too. It takes time to understand another person, it isn't like Facebook. Random friendships simply never workout. Friends are not about quantity anyway, but quality. However on the internet many act the other way around as they believe the more friends they have the more status. But this is SL where we actually interact live with real people behind the keyboard. My experience is that people do read profiles very often. A blanco one doesn't exactly fill any trust at all. Many ignore them because one at least need some clues of what someone's likings are. Say hi, show genuine interest, talk about yourself too and then start conversations and actions. However, 1 out of 10 friends are there to stay if you're lucky.
