  1. Nods, i very much agree. It is being updated so often that we go from showstopper to showstopper when it comes to 2. Version 2.7.2 finally has become usuable for me as long as i don't use AA and the new lightning together. But that has Beta Search. I started to use 2 with 2.4. That gave me micro pauzes every 5 seconds or so, what an utter annoyance. Then 2.5... That gave me constant freezes and hard drop of fps. Then we had 2.6, but that gave me a lot of other issues including rediclous slower load of textures, then 2.7.3, 2.7.4.again deep drop of basis fps pfewww. And one thing i am sure of is that my notebook exceeds requirements. It actually is exactly according to the most optimized specs for SL. I really want to use SL rather than taking hours resolving another showstopper with each interation. So i went backto 1.23.5... and all is silky smooth. And i can actually enjoy SL Lately i meet more and more users logged in with 1.23. And i must say it is the sleekest and fasted viewer at this moment. My basic fps is even 60 or higher, with drops to 12 sometimes where 2.7.4 is 5-7. How ridicule since the inworld experience is hardly different.
  2. Their plan is working?? AHEM. http://secondlife.com/xmlhttp/secondlife.php SL has lost 10000 daily logins at peak hours in the last half year, and it is going down fast now. It used to be 85000 in Dec 2008. That was a peak indeed. A few months ago it was still appr. 65000. Daily logins at peak times today and in the last month has been 56k at the most. It is the result of counter productive management roads and off focus core developments; hardly understood by LL themselves while it is so easy to comprehend for any basic business person. The list of dead tracks LL has been walking has become too long... *Rolling eyes...
  3. I have just one word: Anguish... What else is relevant without falling into stereotyping at the moment... :smileysad:
  4. I understand reports from many with the same problem no matter if they have a Mac, Windows or Linux. 2.7.2 Gives me 35-40 fps, 2.7.4 only 5-7. And i have a Duo Core Vista. My video card is spot on the recommended specifications. It's a code bug somewhere in the latest version really. I rolled back to 2.7.2 and am also using 1.23.5. The latter for the daily fun. The first one for designing multi layered fashion for added attachment points. At moments i am looking at 60 fps while my notebook really isn't that state of the art anymore by now (an Asus G50V). But strangly 2.7.4 keeps me locked at 5-7 maximum no matter what i try. It seems plausible for me that programmers have mixed up buttons in the graphic preferences with program code, keeping the latest shadows and lightning on even if we deactivate it in the graphic settings, and thus driving fps down hard.
  5. What i always have understood is that Philip himself never has been too joyful about the viewer2. Of course he never said this directly however it could be well understood between the lines. A very good signal is also if Torley is visible on the internet about SLor not. And he isn´t lately at all. I know that he isn´t really happy with it, but you know... the Anglo-Saxon way is to avoid or go around the subject rather than talking about it in a straight manner LOL. In one of his speeches last year Philip stated that viewer 1.23.5 would stay supported as long as 2 isn´tup t to the level of satisfactory for the majority. And, what i see happening is that some features in 2 have returned like clearing cache, a floating profile et cetera. The program code of 2 is also so full with bugs that it goes from showstopper to showstopper with each iteration. Moreover, 2 never brought a new hay day for SL, little by little the trend is down concerning new users. And still today i can login with 1.23.5 and Pheonix is also based on that code. It is very well possible that LL will finally see their weird direct with 2. We'll see, however i do have my thoughts... and the return of th old lay out seems very plausible to me.
  6. Intel Duo Core here however with Windows Vista, but with same problem and we are not the only one. 2.7.4 Drastically reduces fps, for me and many from 35-40 to 5-7. Or crashes at startup. No matter if it is Mac, Windows7, Vista or Linux, or whatever. I think LL has mixed up some progam code really as if the new lightning and shadows are always activated in the program code even if not actually selected. Resulting in what you describe. I went back to 2.7.2 and all is well. It's not Linux or so, it's the latest version (rolling eyes). Errrr of course disable automatic updates ater rolling back. A tikcket i have filed btw, however no reply yet. I bet LL is overloaded with tickets lately
  7. Yup, and with each new version of viewer2 fps keeps dropping. With 1.2.3.5 and 2.7.2 i have 35-40 fps, then 2.7.3 it went down ~10, and with 2.7.4 it's only 5-7... really rediculous. Indeed, you are not alone...
  8. I don't have much problems, my sl is very very silky and smooth, but i'm still using 1.23.5 When i must i stick to viewer 2.7.2 and turned off automatic updates since this iteration finally seems stable. What is said by workers at Linden Lab does not always add up or actually is true since they mix it with commercial interests. I've seen it so many times now. Philip has declared that 1.23.5 will be available as long 2 is not stable and solid enough... and it still is not upto the level he would expect i'm sure. And how many at LL are actually understanding Philip's creation in depth like him? What actually is going on is that with the new CEO a policy has started which is, faster updates. Any IT company announcing that means one thing, a lot less beta testing simply because QA just can't keep up. Therein the new CEO does what average IT businesses do today: getting out new stuff as quickly as possible to not fall behind on competition. Untill now i have not seen a very solid viewer2 for that matter since 2.3. With every new iteration since the new CEO very serious showstop problems are part of each update is what i have seen yet. Programmers even mix up program code and buttons on the UI and so on to cover up bugs or they just blend them, et cetera. LL's capacity simply is too low i think and yet they want to be on top. It is a delecate balance, but sofar i don't think they have yet arrived as a quality IT company like Twitter, WoW, et cetera. What i see is a rapid changing SL, specially when mesh import will be available and the downfall of the idea of a virtual (micro) economy. However with the current policies and management i don't see users coming back. Since 3 years total logins are at a down trend and i have not seen a reverse development yet. SL's hay days are over since 2008, but who knows where it is all going... At the moment they don't seem to be able to combine rapid development with quality. Excellent companies really can.
  9. Yep, 2.7.4 is a real pain. With Basic and Atmospheric shaders on my fps is now 5-7 where it was 35-40. As if i have lightning and shadows on. And when i now turn off Basic and Atmospheric shaders my fps jumps from 5-7 to 50-60. Crazy. What i think what happened is that buttons in the preferences graphics tab have been mixed up with program code which might already may have happened with 3.7.3 since that version dropped my fps ~10 already. I think this because the Crtl+Alt+T trick doesn't work anymore with Basic and Atmospheric on where it did not work with lightning and shadows with 2.7.2 (didn't check 2.7.3 on this). I haven't seen a single viewer2 work properly accepted yet. I thought 2.7.2 finally had pulled it of but then it went all wrong again. My internet is very fast and my computer spot on at the recommened specifications, so much higher than basic requirements. I went back to 2.7.2 and turned off automatic updates, and keep that off. For normal use i am still on 1.23.5 btw. Viewer2 i use when absolutely necessary like designing and layered clothing or more attachment points. 1.23.5 is very very fast and stable. Download 1.23.5 http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Old_versions Download 2.7.2 http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Release_Notes/Second_Life_Release/2.7.2
  10. I am still on 1.23.5. 2.7.2 when i really really need it. My experience with viewer 2 sofar is that every new version it has some show stopper bug making it a continuous pain in the but. 2.7.2 is the only version 2.x that i actually can use. But then they borked 2.7.3 and 2.7.4 hard again. They mixed up program code with buttons in the preferences graphics tab bringing fps down hard on many computers that are spot on at recommended specifications. 2.x Is getting utter rediculous now. From all the avies i meet inworld today i understand hardly anyone uses 2.x, except for the noobs. Last year Linden Lab published that nearly 30% was using the official SL viewer which was 2.0 at the time. I don't have an update. The problem layes in the programming and beta testing policies since the new CEO. With the new CEO Linden Lab has adepted common practice of IT business which is getting new version out as soon as possible with even less testing, actually under Beta norms. Consequently, the overall quality of Linden Lab´s Second Life viewer has gotten to a state of continous show stopper bugs like Alpha stage software. This was already announced more or less. When an IT CEO announces faster updates (the new CEO did in his opening statement) you know what time it is.... even lower quality of existing software which was already badly accepted. I would really forget 2 now. What a mess LL is making of that piece of utter crap software which already had been very hard accepted since the start, good grief.
  11. The problem with this viewer is there seems a HUGE bug that drops down fps hard. This could be your problem. The result is a very choppy experience. There seems to a serious program bug where program code is mixed up with the wrong buttons in the graphic preferenced, so SL now performs as if lightning and shadows are always on even if we have not selected it as on. I grabbed back to 1.23.5 and 2.7.2. My experience with viewer 2 sofar is that is every new version it has some show stopper bug. The problem layes in the programming and beta stesting. With the new CEO Linden Lab has adepted common practice of IT business which is getting new version out as soon as possible with even less testing. Consequently, the overall quality of Linden Lab´s Second Life viewer has gotten to a state of continous show stopper bugs like Alpha stage software. I would really forget 2 now and get another alternative.
  12. Hi Just in case, did you set the graphics to Ultra? They are only available at that setting. I used 2.7.2 about half an hour and was able to use DOF. However I went back to 2.7.1 btw. My card is spot on concerning the recommended specifications, but everytime i use lightning and shadows I crash every 5 minutes with 2.7.2. 2.7.2 Also has a bug that it doesn't actually uninstall the second life program folder so when re-installing 2.7.1 it stopped because DLL's couldn't be written due to SL uninstall kept that folder in use. I had to restart the puter and then delete that folder manually. Then i could re-install 2.7.1. For me the latter has also higher FPS with all same settings and does crash much less. Pfew... really 2.x is sooooo full of bugs that i would start to think.... scrap it ! 2.4 Wasn't usuable (microfreezes), 2.6 had a serious texture REQ bug resulting in locking up the CPU's... Now i have 2.7.1 which is more stable and texture do load, but it's with a Beta Search. 2.7.2 crashes every other 5 minutes. I had such a long list of trouble shootings that it is very clear to me that it is all in the program coding. At the moment i only see lesser and lesser new users, repeat logins et cetera. Also Basic loging is so confusing for newbs. SL in this ways stays something for long time users who have created some acceptance towards experimentations and for geeks perhaps but the normal user looses patience quick is what i see about noobs. None ever return and i helped so many already. SL simply keeps on going with experiments and Beta's that users never get a chance to have some sort of a stable SL (for what it is worth). Really This 2 thing is a very very... very bad call. The bugs are bigger than programmers can handle. I would not be surprised there are more beta testers than programmers. Something i see often in IT land... very very very bad way of organizing... Managers just want to get te latest thing on the market.... It's crap management, really ... Viewer 3 ?? ... CEO 3 ? LOL
  13. I would say, first login with Advanced mode so you can use the Search and Map. Then go to really busy placed with real traffic. Some good places are: Muddy's, Dublin, Club Industry, Titanic to begin with. You might not prefer the music style, but you can meet new friends. Or go to Chat places and Events. Unfortunate SL is very huge and deserted. A lot of users concentrate at specific places. All can be found in Search, but you have to login as advanced first. That button can found at the bottom of your login screen, it's a green button. Just say Hi, but don't expect that every new friend is to last long. From 100 friends just a handful are still on my list today to stay. Be selective, start a chat first, talk about interests et cetera. Take time like RL Just take your time...
  14. There are a whole bunch of YouTubes, where the founder Philip Rosedale explained. Do google them. As a child he wanted to do things that weren't possible like a door in his bedroom that would slide open upwards. So he made a hole in the ceiling much to the delight of his parents LOL. He later went to MIT studying physics. Later in life he wanted to build a 3D world where people could play building like Lego blocks and physics. His first attempt was in 1999 in a garage in Linden street San Fransisco. That developed into Linden World, open to public in (i believe 2003) and later renamed Second Life. He already was addicted to that idea being a young boy i suppose. Well, google Youtube "Philip Rosedale" and do enjoy Regards, Linda
  15. I had the same problem and many accounts were hit due to a bug in the payment systems. According to my credit card company all was ok. E-mail to Support@payments.secondlife.com Ask for Eta J. explain your situation in details, and that you are not waiting for formal 'preprogrammed scripted' answers with reference to telephone numbers and Jira's. She's been unformal open and very helpful to me. My case has been resolved very fast. Best of luck, Linda
  16. If that doesn't run SL, nothing does LOL. A bit over the top for SL really... When is Xmas coming Gee that thing looks like a Xmas tree LOL. Be aware that high specs are no garantee to run SL fast and easy. I just had a very detailed ticket in progress. There are severe bugs at the moment with the official 2.x viewer with HTTP textures and rendering issues (very slow rendering of textures and stalled rendering of some sculpted objects in the scene and crippling FPS no matter what high end system we use). At the moment i don't experience much difference between my class1 notebook and an older class2, except when i use 1.23.5. Then the difference is night and day I can use Ultra on the class1 and have to use mid on the 2. With the current viewer 2.x low or ultra doesn't produce much difference in speed LL has confirmed that the problem lays in the code at the moment for 2.x (the latter and the most recent Pheonix both are a real pain). Do not use HTTP textures, and i would also advice to either use the older viewer 1.23.5 for a very fast blasting experience, or the pheonix viewer however not the latest one since it probably carries the same kind of code problems i did hear inworld. Best regards, Linda
  17. Huge problems at the moment with viewer 2.6. More than ever before to my experience. It consumes all the memory you got and uses up all CPU time too 100% no matter what system we have at the moment causing large freezes, overloading and hard crashes even BSOD's. Not to mention that the UI itself has always been under attack since day one. I find SL2 terribly unusable. I entered from 1.23.5 to 2.4 in Dec 2010. When 2.5 came out, 2.4 became seriously borked with micro freezes, so i went back to 1.23.5. I tried to use 2.6 lately, but it freezes my entire system withing 5 minutes because it loads my processors and all memory to 100% constantly. Even in empty sims. It is no wonder why SL doesn't expand and is actually shrinking bit by bit. The programming of it is really really really bad. Inworld i hear so much complaining about SL2 that i can't understand why LL doesn't feel any remorse and regret. Of course LL doesn't really care because they receive appr. 30000 sims x its tier every month. But that is IT mentality so very often, they just want to get ritch and famous try to provide a good impression, but not really want to work with real problems at hand. And Philip Rosedale isn't motivated too much on SL anymore so he has hired 2 CEO's already. But the first thing they do is bork it even more and more and never solve long standing issues. Untill everybody is fed up, but LL also knows that people simply go virtual anyway, so they don't care very much to produce better programming. It has become an institute rather than an innovation company, unfortunate. They are so caught up in their thing that they really don't care about better programming. We totally cashed out last week since we have little believe anymore in SL. And guess what, our process credits was borked, so we couldn't, however in the end we changed to DXechange and took all the money out of the game. At the moment, 80% of the time is used to troubleshoot show stopper problems with SL2 when i wanted to login to have some fun. But after an hour i am really fed up and go do other things since i can't get SL get to work normal or solve the giant issues. And LL can't solve them either, so... Also HTTP textues on gives me HUGE lag, texture load takes ages. When off all rezzes instant as i was used to, but then my processors lock up at 100% feezing the entire notebook. I don't want to spend 80% of my time working show stop problems, i just wanna have fun. 1.23.5 is used as the principle viewer for us as long as we can, then it is up to SL. Really sad :smileysad:
  18. Hi Wilma, Search is being dynamic on a constant basis since LL uses the Google Search Appliance 6 (GSA 6). You need to change your search keys about every 3 days at the moment because GSA 6 uses a filter. I have the impression LL has an algorithm running that changes the filter about every other 3rd day or so. Make sure you have a lot of alternate search keys. As soon as you seen your traffic jump down significantly, change your search keys. Works for me
  19. Hmm weird. According to this site http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-Geforce-GT-425M.34152.0.html the GT 425M is about the same 3D performance as my 9800MGS. Both are class 2 cards. My experience is very fast however the difference is that my buswidth is 256 where your's is only 128. It could be the reason, but as your pc is about 3 months old i should think it should be really be fast enough for SL. What i would do is totally uninstall SL including all users folders. Specially the user folders must be deleted too (manually) to avoid a re-installation of SL using the settings again you don't want. Then make sure you have the latest Nvidia drivers installed. Sometimes pc's/notebooks aren't delivered with the latest. Use the program 'Driver Sweeper' to actually uninstall your current driver to make sure no artifacts of the driver are left over, then restart the pc and install the latest videodriver. Then re-install your SL totally clean, ignore the message of the card not being recognized at login. After login go to preferences graphics and see. I know from experience that SL Development is very slow supporting the most recent cards and computers A few things i have to say in addition: Having 128 bits buswidth on a videocard will result in a slow rezz and texture rendering. So i would not expect fast performances. What helps in that case is to check preferences: reduce draw distance, activate VBO and don't use AA and anisotropic. Also be careful what shaders to use. Even turn off shaders maybe. Set reflections at least to the minimum. A thing that always helps is turning off classic clouds in the evironment editor. HTTP textues (i believe it is in the Advanced menu) is very bugged at the moment. Turn it off for faster texture loads and sculpties. Also, set your bandwith in SL preferences to 1000-1200. SL hardly uses more than that although it should go to 1500 in theory, however SL hardly does. Setting higher than that will result in a lower performance actually, extra lag, tp issues, et cetera. My experience 1000 gives the most optimum results really. I hope it all works. Good luck
  20. Most interesting. I had been using the name Prim Saver since 2007 too, using it totally undepending and being totally unaware of other products with the same name. However, since that name is not a particular clever and bright one i made changes already in 2008. Be creative Phil, there are many alternative that will help you to be unique in Search. Not gonna tell you though :smileytongue: I have a list of at least 5 perfect alternatives.
  21. Europe in RL :smileywink: In SL i don't have a particular preference really as long as it isn't Zindra :smileyvery-happy:
  22. Indeed i do second that. SL has even killed my notebook screen i had the impression, but in turned out to be a faulty connection of some VGA- connectors adding to the screen-die-misery (my brother found out LOL) :smileyhappy: I just want to play SL. Sometimes it can be VGA-cable connectors or even a BIOS failure when temperaturs of the graphics card can go sky high as i understood from info from specialists. Do mind that SL consumes massive resources even on the most modern computers is what i have been experiencing in the last 4 years. At least do assure excellent cooling inside your computer. Remove dust inside at least every 1/2 year. If you have a notebook, raise the back up under an angle and even place a special air cooling device under it. On older notebooks remove the battery will lower temperatures as older style batteries generate a lot of heat. Optimized cooling will raise your FPS (frames per second), meaning the inworld experience will look more fluent, and your screen does actually stay in a healthy state.
  23. Simply put in an AR (Abuse Report). Check for the most matching subject. These ARs work excellent, althought you might not be impressed at once. From the 1450 AR's our group had reported earlier over a years time they were all addressed brilliant in due time. It does help to have more RL people to report btw. As per live chat, LL chatted back to me that these ARs are taken very serious, the more the better for LL to understand patterns. A thing not to be done is to contact the sim owner as they can and will ban you instantly most of the time. Just put in an AR and shut your mouth. I had chosen to be open about it. Not that i was popular at the time in SL, but that is the risk of the game :smileywink: A year later i even had received an e-mail from a RL that he wasn't very happy about my reports. C'est La Vie. But it works. And there are plenty other sims to move on to. Do never feel impressed or pressed by a sim owner really. As i always say... "i don't care if you are the king, i care about the general thing", hahah.
  24. I have not yet experienced that one. However i will keep an eye on it. My problem with 2.6.3 was that rezzing, rendering and texture load went from appr. 5 seconds to 60. And some alpha textures stay at blur. It appears that something is borked at HTTP textures in the Debug menu. When i tick that off all speed is back as per normal, meaning very fast for me. I found this out by accident since i very much "hate" 2.6 because it was so slow for me, so i went back to 1.23.5. Hower i sometimes need multiple attachment since i develop high quality layered fashion designs in SL from RL (3D design as it is called in RL fashion) But by coincidence i found out that with HTTP textures off 2.6.3. seems usuable for me now. It might be correlated with your problem too since it seems a rezzing bug, Anyway i did put in a ticket and it is looked at by the development team at the moment. It is sooo frustrating that it can take days or hours to get back to normal play in SL which is SL about in the first place. We are not being paid to be bug hunters are we :smileymad:
  25. One of je targets for Linden Lab is to be able to run SL on most computers both low and high end. It will take a few years before 32 bits is out of use. Till that time it would be preferred to see the viewer develop to a more stable and reliable piece of software. At the moment 2.x has a mammoth cargo ship of bugs to be resolved and keep up with latest computer and game technology parallel in time. On the latter SL is already seriously behind since years, however the new CEO is LL's new hope. I'd rather prefer to see focus on that. SL is to be abele run on most, if not all, computers is the first priority i suppose.
