  1. Dunno if it is illegal, but since official viewer 1.23.5 can't be downloaded anymore from LL's old viewer list i have come to an agreement to place that piece of vintage V1 software on a dedicated public private company server room, which is: http://www.sensic.nl/PrivateMedia/Second_Life_1-23-5-136262_Setup.exe At least it can live on there as long as the actual hoasting company does not receive any kind of warning from Linden Lab. Sofar i have not noticed any kind of violation of the Tos, but if it is a violation, i certainly will receive a message in my e-mail. But sofar i think it will be pretty safe since it is the last official V1 viewer and free of use via that download server for anyone who prefers to, like before from LL's amazone server. I am pretty certain that LL will let 1.23.5 users login in 2012, so do take your advantage...
  2. I advocate to stick to 1.23.5 indeed. Just hang on to that super viewer. Unfortunate it just went off the download page of old viewers, but it can still be downloaded here now: http://www.sensic.nl/PrivateMedia/Second_Life_1-23-5-136262_Setup.exe
  3. Hmm, yes i did read that article too just before i adviced, no offense, but it is too typical and nothing new to be bluntly hounest. And in specific, no one covers the Video ram bandwidth issue, but specially that is the most crucial thingy amongst my other points based on 5 years of experience and tests in the last 14 months on a large variety of systems and viewer combinations. Therefore, i would advocate to follow the path of either i5/i7 + Nvidia 560(M) or higher.. or... Core2, Nvidia 98xx(M) + 1.23.5 or Phoenix, Imprudence, Singularity (V1 based viewers). And i dare to say... success garanteed. Other than that it seems pure luck what works and what not since SL 2.8.
  4. Lenovo (Chinese brand) are former IBM machines, they are less game oriented and much more office use related. Asus is by far the best choice when it comes to gaming. My thingy is an Asus G50VT (Core2, T9400) with an Nvidia 9800 MGT and it runs SL like a dream. But... the GT 540M isn't really that well for SL, it only has a video memory bandwidth of 128, and for SL at least 256 really is needed. 128 Is a huge pain for SL. And the 540 does have that bottleneck of 128. 256 Video memory bandwidth... that would be the 560(M) or higher. The amount of video memory higher than 512 is irrelevent for SL since it hardly uses more than 400 or so. So... Video memory bandwidth is what you should be looking for... that would be 560(M) or higher... or a 98xx (older) Nvidia card which also carries 256. If SL runs nowadays is more luck than wisdom since viewer 2.8 anyway. I have spoken many SL users (and read the blogs and forums here) with the latest computers with 580 cards, and they were not too happy to find out that SL has become more and more mega unproportional demanding on hardware. But all i know is that video memory bandwidth and dedicated video memory are crucial as a general rule. Personally i reverted to viewer 1.23.5. It runs SL smooth on both Core I5 with 560 Nvidia or higher and older core2 with an Nvidia 98xx card. Should you like it, 1.23.5 can still be downloaded here: http://www.sensic.nl/PrivateMedia/Second_Life_1-23-5-136262_Setup.exe
  5. A few things you need to keep in mind Clarrisa concerning SL: 1. Nvidia works best for SL 2. DDR3 dedicated memory is needed at least (never integrated videomemory). 3. Memory bandwidth of at least 256 is needed (latest high end nvidia cards, or older 98xx based cards). 4. Video memory of 512 is enough since SL doesn't use much more than 400 or so. 5. Since SL 2.8, SL has become unproportional demanding on hardware; 1.23.5 is fast easy and less demanding, but the above still stands. Your card is too low for even older SL viewers. But if you want 1.23.5 it can be downloaded here now and you can still login with it. My prognoses is that it will let you login at least this remaining year. In the meanwhile you could orientate further. http://www.sensic.nl/PrivateMedia/Second_Life_1-23-5-136262_Setup.exe At this very moment for SL it is about luck which computer will run it well, even the latest 580 Nvidia has problems with it for far too many, but integrated cards like your's are far away from minimum requirements for all viewers. Try 1.23.5, lower down graphics, set your bandwith in preferences at 1000. I agree it still not top but it might just work for now.
  6. Meanwhile V1.23.5 can be downloaded here: http://www.sensic.nl/PrivateMedia/Second_Life_1-23-5-136262_Setup.exe
  7. Hi, I don't think it will run SL all that well... that graphics card is for low demanding games like Sims3 and WoW at the lowest detail setting. Although graphics in SL aren't all that super, SL requires a super computer since 2.8. The reason is unclear, but it certainly has to do with the poor coding and software development. Since the official V1 viewer 1.23.5 isn't available anymore for download, I would at least advice to login in SL with an alternative V1 based viewer like Singularity, Phoenix, Imprudence. http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Downloads Details why: The Intel HD Graphics 2000 (or Intel Graphics Media Accelerator HD 2000 or GMA HD 2000) is an integrated graphics card in the Sandy Bridge codenamed processors. It will most likely be included in slower mobile processors (Pentium brand e.g.) and is currently integrated in most desktop processors. The HD Graphics 2000 has no dedicated memory but shares the fast Level 3 Cache with the CPU cores and also part of the main memory. Due to Turbo Boost, the GPU can be overclocked depending on the current CPU load and power consumption. The GMA HD 2000 offers only half of the 12 Execution Units (EUs) of the Intel GMA HD 3000. Because of the halfed amount of shaders, the gaming performance is only compareable to the old Intel GMA HD (in the Arrandale CPUs). Our tests with a desktop i5-2400 showed a performance level of a Geforce G 105M e.g. which is slightly faster. Therefore, only low demanding games like Sims 3 or World of Warcraft can be played in low detail settings fluently. In addition to the GPU, the chip also houses some dedicated units for decoding and encoding HD videos. On the IDF Intel demonstrated the encoding of a 3 minute long 1080p video to an iPhone compatible format in 640x360 in only 14s. Another novelty of the Sandy Bridge GPU is the embedded DisplayPort eDP to connect internal Displays. Due to the integration in the 32nm built CPU and the halfed amount of shaders, the power consumption of the GPU should be quite low and also suited for small and light laptops.
  8. Quit SL, perhaps explore a different grid like IMVU. It has double the logins and is less complex. It runs on average computers. And there are many more alternative 3d worlds, it doesn't have to be SL perse since my Inv. are mostly my own creations i can start over on any other grid. Or just start all over again since IMVU isn't compatible. I give it another 6 months... If LL doesn't come up with a usuable viewer for the average user i have no reason to stay. A thing i just won't do is buy another computer again specially for SL. There's more in life than SL.
  9. I can't agree more. Many viewers i have been trying lately again including FS since V2.8 came out which has crippled FPS for too many. I think most just prefer extra options because speed it can hardly be to my opinion. Some just swear to a certain 3rd viewer because of a specific option they like or as part of being a 'cult', or just following the masses. Also many are trying to find a viewer that actually works since V2.8. But at this moment, i can't find any. I tried Cool viewer today. It was speedy but cashed every time i clicked the minimap button (no wonder because the code is Snowglobe based, thus very buggy). And after uninstalling most of my programs hung, CCleaner stopped working, it messed up my registry. I have tried FS, it was laggy as hell. I am not going to even try the Singularity viewer since it is Snowglobe based too. I have tried Kirsten's viewer. It was slower with extra options i don't need. Fingers crossed that LL will bring at least a viewer which can be used by the average user. Whatever i try i always end up back to 1.23.5, not because i don't like changes, it's because no other viewer can imprress me at the moment, including FS, Phoenix, Cool. I haven't tried imprudence yet, but i don't see the point of using it. The extra options i don't need.
  10. Personally i don't have any experience with SSD, but what i did read and understand about it is that they become slow when fragmented. The SL cache does cause fragmentation very fast. I would read about SSD if the above still could be a problem for latest SSD's as the technology evolves.
  11. Hmm, as a V2/3 user reverted to 1.23.5 i tried the latest stable Cool viewer to see mesh. This viewer looks promising but it's super buggy (snowglobe based). I even crash immediate when i click the button to open the minimap. When i de-installed Cool other programs froze and CCleaner halted. I had to restart the whole computer to actually clean up the registry which Cool seem to have made a mess with. And, yes i did install the latest stable version. It is a nice try and i understand it is volentary work not listed in the TVP at all, but i'm not even going to touch this thing again.
  12. I can second that Asus and SL are a well combination. My G50VT is a bit older now (2 years), and even that one runs SL brilliant and super fast. I always hear and read excellent references concnering Asus and SL. But i also have met several users of the 580 card and a very troubled SL.Sometimes cards are just too new for SL. I had that experience when my notebook was new; it had the latest Nvidia card which was already out 9 monthes earlier in the US, but it took a month for SL to actually support it, so i was a bit lucky. So be careful with state of the art equipment with SL. Since V2.8 it seems more luck than wisdom which system works best with SL, but i have my trust in Asus indeed.
  13. I never understood the choice of Collada. It is an open source collaboration of some former game developers. To me it appears a very vague and under developed one looking at the Collada website too and reading wikis about it. OBJ is the professional standard of all 3D tools, and even SL uses it for objects and avatars as far as i could see. Strange that Collada choice was from my perspective.
  14. Hi, It all comes down to your computer and what viewer works best with it. However, in my many years of SL and having tried so many viewers including Pheonix versions and Firestorm, V3, and all V2's i still come to the conclusion that V1.23.5 still is the best in terms of speed. The highest FPS, the smoothest, the least buggiest, simple, easy, fun. It cannot render mesh, it does not support shadows or multiple attachments, it doesn't have DOF and avatar physics. But The more options a viewer has, the slower it gets due to more overhead in the code. Many don't need all that extras at all as they prefer a solid balance between speed and quality. V1 provides this still for many as i understand both inworld and in the forums. V1 is kept alive and even many estate owners (thus content creators) still use it (or Pheonix which is V1) since many of them have older computers, consenquently mesh will be adapted slowly. The point is, the viewers aren't coded so very brilliant, and not everyone will buy a super computer just for SL. We can see it in the decline of new users and logins since V2/3. It just means that SL isn't fit for the average computer, and it is why so many older users keep on going with V1 based viewers. Pheonix has the most options, V1.23.5 is the fastest. It's like ppl using IMVU and so on. They want fun, more than high quality and loads of options. SL has followed the path of beauty and options rather than performance since V2. If you want speed, smooth, easy and fun: V1.23.5. (or V1 based). If you want options and more beauty: V2 based, V3, Firestorm (less performance).
  15. Hi, Have you cleared your cache? If that doesn't work (fingers crossed it does)... well, I have been looking at the specifications of your graphics card. The point is, it seems to have 1024 memory and 120 streaming processors, but it has a very narrow memory bus of 64. SL needs at least 128 since 2008/9. With 128 textures will still need quite a long time to become sharp. The 64 bus width choakes the process of rendering and then stalls. Perhaps it has worked for you earlier, but the minimum requirements have been raised since SL V2. Your card might have been pushed over the edge recently... I had that once... very annoying... My experience is that since SL 2.7.4 SL is excessively demaning on hardware ever more even if options aren't used like avatar physics, mesh and shadows. But not to worry, there are plenty of viewers who can run your SL like Imprudence, Singylarity and 1.23.5. I'm on a class 1 notebook with a very fast Nvidia 256 bus wide graphics card and even i am shouting with madness to SL. There are even plenty of users with top of the range computers who can't run SL properly. It is no shame to search for a less demaning viewer like Imprudence, Singylarity and 1.23.5. However be aware that you card has this very narrow bus... In time i would advice to upgrade it if you can. Best of luck
  16. Hi, That alpha glitch happens when a texture contains an alpha layer (a transparant layer/channel you aren't aware of, but it is there in the background of the texture). Mostly the case when a PNG has been applied on an object, this case a Collada imported object. If no alpha is needed you could remove it in Photoshop, but a more simple way is to upload the texture as JPG (at its highest compression i would say). Jpeg doesn't support alpha layers so in that way you are sure it has none at all. Best of luck.
  17. Hi, 1.235 can still be downloaded here: http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Old_versions It's the older 'old version' list. I still use 1.23.5 it, it's near perfect about usability. Since V2 i had nothing but serious show stoppers. My hopes were higher for V3.1.0. It seems smooth, however on too many places i had just 5 fps where i have 30-40 with 1.23.5 and 2.7.2. There is nothing i haven´t tried even in the debug settings: HTTP off, VBO off, streaming VBO off, avatar physics off. That all helped a bit, however on my fav. places fps 'crashed'. Firestorm is based on the same source, i have tried that anyway, but the results were exactly the same As far as i understand 1.23.5 will be kept supported as long as V2/3 hasn't reached a level of major acceptance according to an interview of Philip Rosedale/Linden. I know that a major part of sim owners (thus those who make SL content) are still on Pheonix and 1.23.5. I think it is why LL keeps 1.23.5 in the air
  18. Hardware at the moment seems irrelevant. All 2/3 viewers above 2.7.4 perform terribly bad no matter what is what i understand inworld. Some seem to be lucky. With 2.7.2, and all V1 based viewers i have 35 fps on average, 70 fps in an empty sim. Since 2.7.4, Firestorm (v2/3 source based) and all other 2/3 based viewers it went to 10-15 fps, 25 fps in a total empty sim, draw distance 168. I have all shadows off btw. And i always have HTTP turned off since HTTP on is seriously counter productive for me since its invention. Duo core T9400, Vista Home SP2, Nvidia 9800MGT 512, ddr3, 4 ddr3 gig main mem, video 256 bits bus width, OpenG 3.0. It doesn't matter much how i set all settings in SL preferences, low, ultra, advanced tweaking, upgrade my graphics driver and set 3D performances in the Nvidia 3D settings, but that's what i understand inworld as well. Pretty much nothing helps to improve. At this moment V2/3 viewers perform much worse than V1 iterations. Only top machines seem to be able to have a reasonable performance is what i see and hear confirmed inworld. But is that so? i7 core, nvidia 500-like-top-version... they perform the same like my machine, really nothing helps other than lucky combinations one has the magic specifications for SL. I have reported this to LL making certain first they have nothing to "shoot" at to me... it remains silent from HQ till now, except a few automized/mechanical like replies which made no sense at all, lol. Interesting, because the actual graphical output hasn't changed since 2.7.2 if shadows are turned off and without the new lighthing shaders and DOF. Texture rendering seems ok if i turn off HTTP, however just nothing helps to cranck up basic fps to a playable level. Avatar physics and mesh, it pretty much has ruined SL for many... since a major part in SL is still on an older viewer because 2/3 based viewers kills their performance. I skipped V3.1 btw. I read that it has a better performance. Perhaps i will test it, but i fear the worst already,
Sonnst ruftst du deine DSL lieferant an.
  20. Pardon, here is the slurl. http://slurl.com/secondlife/Rundlelawn/14/66/30
  21. Hi, You'll find such a media device for L$50 at my place, i've made it look like an iPod; get the "group edition" read the manual, set it, pass the manual (notecard) to the DJ on the shift and you're set. You don't have to open your land settings to any DJ, just set that thing to your group, and done. Regards, Linda
  22. Hi, i can confirm your experience. My SL had an fps of 70 in a total empty region, since V2.7.4 my fps is capped at 25 whatever i try. On average my fps is between 5-20 as well. I hear many complaints about low fps since SL 2.7.4. And we hear so many stories about "sl is different", but the fact is, V2.7.2 and 2.7.4 are basically the same "animal". Fact is and remains, SL is terribly source coded. We can use the most up-to0date computer with an i7 and Nvidia 550, the fps remains hideous. Still there is much fun to be had in SL, just download an older viewer like Imprudence or the official 1.23.5. It is said that bit by bit those viewer get broke because of server changes, but i am still using 1.23.5 since V2 came out. And it still runs strong and fast. Many region owners i know even keep on going with V1 based viewers because they are so much faster, although many seem to use the Pheonix viewer which is also V1 based. Welcome to SL
  23. Excellent work i must say, Now all we need is a viewer for the casual players which works well enought without mesh as a starter. Probably one of the reasons i have hardly seen the use of mesh inworld. Most of the sim onwers i encounter and so many places in the showcase or destination guide are avoiding mesh as the plague, even holding back using too much sculpties unless it is a must like animals, plants, etc. Specially if a similar result can be obtained by old fashion prim building. One of the reasons is that many users in sl kept using older viewers like Imprudence, 1.23.5 etc. since the actual UI of 2/3 is a real pain for a 3D experience plus HTTP textures and inv. doesn't work well for many, slower rezz time for sculpties and mesh, much lower FPS etc. I think 2 out of of the 3 ppl i meet are logged in with an older style viewer. They all avoid the 2 and 3 mess as the plague. 3rd party 2/3 based viewers aren't performing all that well either is what i hear inworld. It is really great to see the mesh and what is actually possible technically in sl, but... We should have an efficient excellent viewer first before all the fancy bells and whistels come to the grid.
  24. Hi, May i suggest a few matters. First set your bandwidth in SL to 1000. It is the current optimum. At rare moments SL will stream at 1200. In theory SL can actually peak at 1500, however that hardly ever happens. 1000 is the "safest" average setting. Setting the bandwidth too high will result in packet losses, tp fails, avatar drifting, difficulties at crossing sims et cetera. On regular basis, unplug you router and wait appr. 3 minutes, then start it up again. Start SL from a fresh started computer (not from a sleep or hybernate state). I would also call your internet service provider (ISP) and have your overhead and noise on the internet line checked well. On the other hand, Linden Lab has contracted fiber optic data server providers. They used to be Above. net and Level3.net. It could be that they have changed since one of them had regular problems. You can check your entire internet connection from your computer all the way to Linden Lab with a program called 'Virtual Route', check the connection to https://www.secondlife.com. It will report where exactly any problem is located in the entire route. If it is passed your Internet provider i would submit a service ticket to LL, otherwise a service ticket to your ISP would be proper. Not that i am any kind of technician, however i have learned my hard way. There are some matters to be checked for you. Best of luck
  25. I would not use the official viewer 2 or 3 Victoria, it is way to buggy. There are so many glitches. It is not for nothing not many actually use it (less than 10%). Most users login with 3rd parties or the 1.23. I would suggest to take a look at those.
