  1. Have you tried running without the compatibility mode and not as administrator? Firestorm and LL viewers can upload fine here under Windows 8 just running with the default setup. I did try switching on SP3 compatibility mode, and then that with admin mode, and was still not able to get a crash on upload. Still, you might want to switch those off, just to reduce the number of variables.
  2. The GNote plugin for METAbolt can do this GIM does almost the same, but with group IM instead of popup notices.. METAbolt only runs on Windows, hope that's OK for your situation.
  3. Windows 8 comes with a Metro app for browsing Skydrive, but the Explorer add-in that conflicts with SL viewers is still a separate download and not installed by default.

Class 5 versus class 7 but haven't seen any for class 8. http://community.secondlife.com/t5/mono2-performance/Performance-comparisons-Class-5-vs-Class-7-amp-Mono-1-vs-Mono-2/td-p/870129 the most interesting post in that thread is the last, where Kelly noted that only two regions were running on that sim host. That means that most of the server resources (memory, disk, all but CPU cores) were only running at 1/4 the load they would have on full production hosts.
  5. In the end it doesn't matter, because all textures are converted to a totally different format (not full JPEG 2000, but a JPEG 2000 code stream without the header) when you upload them. On your end, save to whatever format you're comfortable using. There can be some gotchas with alpha channels and the way Photoshop saves each of those two file types, but that issue doesn't really matter for skins.
  6. Sometimes updates get lost, and pushing the "stand" button at the bottom of the viewer window does nothing. When that happens, it often works to right click on your own name tag and pick "stand up".

Meh, I think they're just parroting the crowd. Steam is an ad fest; IMVU tries to install a bunch of browser adware along with its client; SL is still nearly pristine in comparison.
  8. I don't think they care if it looks stupid, if a stream of pennies rolls in. I expect LL to evaluate the level of complaints, ignore it, then extend the banners to profiles and wherever else they'll fit.

  10. On about all viewers you can use Develop>Avatar>Show Look At to see these crosshairs. On the Exodus viewer, use the ''e' toolbar button, and look under the interface interaction section for some options on how these are displayed. on the Firestorm viewer, there are some similar options in the preferences, under the Privacy tab, a "look at" sub-tab is in there. See http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Show_Look_At to understand the color code. This page could be good reading for your partner too; if you play around with the camera with this feature turned on, you can quickly see that the crosshairs do not necessarily point where you are looking! They are really only animation hints for your avatar's eyes. If you alt-click on your partner, you can get the pink crosshairs focused on her. Or, press Esc a couple of times to get a neutral setting back.
  11. Not really. A different Z offset will change the return value for llGetAgentSize, but the server can't tell if that change came from a new or altered shape, or from a viewer tweak.
  12. If the computer was engineered correctly, with adequate cooling for the components they built into it, this should not be a problem. Keep the computer's vents clean, don't try any careless overclocking experiments, and all should be fine. Thre are lots of little utilities around that can monitor the temperature of the video and other components, you might want to grab one of those and see how things look, if you want to put your mind at ease.
  13. RCs are normally overlaid on whatever the main channel got, so interest list changes would be there too.
  14. Doesn't really look like it's been hacked, the Google Ads sections look like they were added to the source in an orderly sort of way. It looks like they may be shutting the service on and off because the incorrect ad sizes are being served.
  15. Advanced>Show Debug Settings Look for RenderHideGroupTitle Set it to FALSE It's kind of an obsolete setting, it may have got set under an old viewer version or something.
  16. The cresh stats aren't made up, but lots of crashes happen at the very end, while logging out normally. I wish those could be broken out separately, since those crashes are usually in the "so what?" end of things.
  17. Try Ctrl+Shift+A to brnig up the Add-Ons Manager, and see if anything you don't recognize is installed. Lots of program installers (including some that are supposed to be protecting you from things like this!) will stuff various search/adware/spyware extensions into every browser they can find. Some of these are easier to uninstall for good than others.
  18. It might not happen by March (delays on big changes are inevitable), but it will happen some time this year. Once the server side baking changes go through, old viewers will still be able to connect, but they won't be able to display avatars in SL any more. Everybody will show up as a cloud or gray person. This will pretty much be the end of useful life for retired viewers, but it won't be the end of viewers that are still being maintained. LL has been making the source code changes available, so that they can release new compatible versions.
  19. vickiadams wrote: If I mark an item of clothing "For Sale" and set a price on the profile, how does someone go about buying it inworld? This is a really obscure feature, but yes you can sell things like that individually! Here is a little experiment you can try. Rez a box, but don't set it for sale. Mark a clothing item for sale in your inventory, then drag it into the box. Now, if you open that box, or edit it and go to the contents tab, right-click on that item, and you'll see an option to buy it for the price you set. Practically nobody sells things this way, but there you go.
  20. Hi greek, your best bet might be here -- https://secondlife.com/my/forms/destinations.php? There is a spot on that form to leave notes for the Linden destination guide editors, and there you could explain the problem. This is LL so it could take a while. It might be a good idea to poke a hole in the wall until they can fix the listing.
  21. It's OK if the invisiprims can't be removed. With deferred render they are simply invisible, and the added alpha can do the work instead. With the old mode they will work as they always did, and adding an alpha will simply be redundant.
  22. Is the land owned by a group? There has long been a loophole/bug in the tier system that lets such land remain unfunded for a long, long time.
  23. A screen shot would be nice, but I will guess that a spider avatar is all prims and hides all of the base avatar. If this is so, then look in the Library part of your inventory for an alpha wearable called Invisible Avatar. Add that to your outfit and there is a good chance this will fix it without more trouble. If you are less lucky, you might need a customized alpha wearable.

  25. I was on 3.4.4 and did not get prompted to update today, checking after you started this thread. I did since update manually, though.
