  1. Very interesting proposal, which begs the question... how would one go about hiding themself in SL? I suppose anyone playing would have to set their viewer to never show names and promise not to use any sort of radar or pull up the map. Could be fun, but it would be so easy to cheat. ...Dres PS. When I was a kid, we used to play this game called bloody murder. It was sort of like hide and seek, only instead of the person that was it closing their eyes and counting, everyone else would close their eyes and count while the person that was it hid. Then everyone would go look for the person that was it and when someone would find them, they'd yell, "bloody murder." At this point, everyone would start running back to base and if the person that was it could touch one of them before they made it there, they were it for the next round. It was lots of fun.
  2. First off, you may want to give us some more information as to your system specs. Which viewer are you using, are you going through a router and if so is it wireless? Meanwhile, you can try clearing your cache manually. Here's how. After you do this you'll want to sign into a quiet sim and give your inventory time to reload. Typing in random letters every now and then will help it along. ...Dres

  5. It seems to me that you're just putting up mental obstacles for yourself. Firstly, you say you don't have time to learn... of course you do. Just set a little time aside every day or every few days... you don't need to learn it overnight. If you really have a passion for it and make the slightest effort, you'll find that, even if you end up not being able to create anything to your satisfaction, you'll learn a lot and have a better appreciation for the creators that make the things you like so much. This is what I did and even though I still can't make a decent t-shirt, I've learned a lot that helps me out tremendously with the other things that I am good at making in SL. It's more about the process than the final outcome. There are plenty of good online tutorials and inworld classes of which you can take advantage. I'd be happy to point you in the right direction, if you choose to go down that path. Secondly, you don't need a sim. A sim is something you can build up to, if and when your business really takes off. All you have to do is make one nice thing and stick it up for sale on Marketplace. Add things to that and eventually, when you can afford it, get a little piece of land for a small store. Maybe even rent a little place in a busy mall. It doesn't have to be all or nothing. It might be worth trying. You never know, you might really enjoy it. ...Dres
  6. You could contact one of the sim managers... there are three listed in that group. If you are, in fact, banned at estate level they should be able to find out that information. Hope this helps... Dres
  7. I agree, it is closer to correct. I'd love to leave it that way, except for the fact that it does "break" content. I believe it would have the worse effect on jewelery that utilizes the "incorrect" shiny rendering. Oh well, life goes on. ...Dres

Your average guy doesn't have a lot of social pressure to be fashionable. His male friends will likely be unimpressed, and most women probably won't find him more appealing for it. I'm just wondering why you think they wouldn't. Maybe I just don't understand straight women, and given my sexual preference, I can say I haven't ever really tried. But why would a woman not be impressed if a man goes through the trouble of trying to make himself look better for her. That is what being fashionable is all about, right? ...Dres

  10. I completely agree, but unfortunately you don't get to pick the crown you get when you're voted Prom Queen. What's a boy to do? ...Dres
  11. I noticed an issue specifically with the "RenderDeferred" setting. It seems this debug setting is directly related to the "Lighting and Shadows" setting which is in the "Graphics" tab under "Shaders". When it's set to true it turns on "Lighting and Shadows" and if you turn off "Lighting and Shadows" it's automatically sets "RenderDeferred" to false. And vice versa. The problem with "Lighting and Shadows" being turned on is that it renders shininess a different way and some things, that rely on shininess being rendered the regular way, look horrible. Here's an example of what I'm talking about (the top is with "Lighting and Shadows" turned off, "RenderDeferred" set to false, the bottom is with "Lighting and Shadows" turned on, "RenderDeferred" set to true): Notice that in the bottom one, shiny can be seen, but it doesn't obscure the texture the way the top one does. While this could be seen as an improvement in the way shininess is applied to textures, many things have been created with the original type of shiny rendering in mind. In this example, the top one looks like brass while the bottom looks like... well... shiny yellow PVC pipe... not good... lol. Imagine my surprise when my RL roommate and SL sister, to whom I'd given this bed, came to me and said that her bed had turned all yellow. Yeah, I had set the "RenderDeferred" to true on her viewer as well. So after figuring out what was causing it, I had to turn it off. Seeing as this setting is turned off by default, most people will see shininess rendered the old way. But, at some point, if this setting is set on by default, a lot of things are just not going to look "right" anymore. Just wanted to point this out. ...Dres
  12. My sister and I actually went to the viewing of the royal wedding in SL. Here's a pic from the after party: She was wearing her tiara, but for some strange reason it wasn't rendering at all for me. Oh well... we had a great time anyway. ...Dres
  13. It certainly is. There's a little box on the camera control, on the right side, that you can click to access the preset views.
  14. There are no preset views in Phoenix. They are only available in viewers with a V2 code base (that I'm aware of). That being said, you should join the Phoenix Support Group if you need further assistance. There's a link to it on this page: Pheonix Viewer Support. They are very helpful when you run into issues. ...Dres
  15. I completely agree with you on this, but if you think about it, the same could be said for RL. Designers cater more to women than men. The cool thing about SL is that if you are so inclined, have the talent and are willing to put in the time and energy, you can make anything you want. I know some places for silks and probably medieval stuff. I'll post some later after I log in and find them for you. Until then, here's some links to menswear blogs that might get you started: Menstuff (ir)regular guy Men's Second Style Hope this helps... Dres

Persephone Emerald wrote: Of course the real solution to a laging customer base is provideing a better service, not just enticing more new potential customers to give it a drive around the block. But will Linden Labs really understand that reasoning & follow it? Time will tell. This is my greatest wish for SL, and you're right, time will, indeed, tell. There's an argument to be made for having only one viewer base, there's little sense in supporting two completely different code bases. Eventually, there will be so many things implemented in the V2 code that porting them back to V1 will get increasingly tedious. I've used Firestorm and though it's not ready for prime time yet, I can see how I could end up preferring it in the end. What I can't see is LL getting rid of third party viewers all together, especially when it gives them an opportunity to use code developed by TPV devs instead of having to pay someone to develop their own. ...Dres
  17. There used to be this website called Hero Machine where you could pick different shapes, skins and clothes and create a character... I loved it and would spend hours playing around with it. Then one day, by accident, I saw a game called City of Heroes sitting on the shelf at a wholesale store. It seemed to have the same kind of functions as the Hero Machine site only with more options; and you could take your character and do things with it, mostly kill bad guys. I had to have it. It was a lot of fun, though the frustrating part was that once you created your character, you'd have to go through leveling up and completing special missions just to change clothes, bummer. So I ended up spending more time creating new characters then I did trying to level up the ones I already had... lol. Okay, here's the juicy part... So, I was on a gay forum site one day (it was quite sexual in nature), and someone posted something about SL, and how it was a cool place you could go to roleplay the particular fetish that was the focus of that site. So I looked into it and ZOMG!!! When I realized you could create characters and dress them up and change their shape whenever you want, I knew this was for me. And from the moment I joined I was astounded by the possibilities. At first playing "Barbie" (or should I say "Ken"... lol) was great, then there was the sexual aspect, which for me was like pr0n and erotica rolled into one (of which I'm both very fond). Then I started building things and it took me back to when I was a kid playing with Legos... how incredible! At the same time I able to meet people from all over the globe, made some very good friends, whom I cherish dearly, and eventually fell in "SLove" with someone. Amazing! Right? Wow, laying it all out like this really brings home to me the reason I love SL so much. Thank you Storm for starting this thread. ...Dres
  18. If you look on the main forum page on the right there's a section called "Recently Created" that has different views of the forum you might find useful. I usually use the "Forum Posts" one, to which I believe PeeWee gave the link. Makes it a little easier to get a grasp of the conversations going on at any given time. After seeming a bit heavy handed at first, the moderation has calmed down quite a bit, imo. They seem to do a good job of keeping things civil, after having driven off some of the more obvious trolls. I, too, miss some people that have never returned, but we're still having some interesting discussions here. No need to feel out of touch, just come back and join in. You'll get the hang of it eventually. Cheers... Dres
  19. It's not your monitor, sounds like your graphics card is overheating. When was the last time you cleaned out your computer, sometimes that's all it needs. Dust builds up and prevents air from circulating and cooling your components correctly. Google computer cleaning and there will be tons of information on how to do it. Of course this is a first step, if it doesn't work you know there's something else wrong. Good luck... Dres
  20. I seriously doubt that any VW system is capable of stopping copybotting. The information has to be downloaded onto your computer and therefore has the potential to be accessed and improperly used. I don't know anything about certificates of connection so maybe you're right about that. But that would only go towards solving the permaban issue, not copybotting. Plus, there's probably ways around that as well, if someone were so inclined to figure it out. All that can be done is to try to make it more difficult to accomplish, which LL has taken steps to do; though, some would say, not enough. ...Dres
  21. Of course they can return, IPs change all the time so no biggie there. When someone is permabanned they are blocked by MAC address which is a bit trickier but can also be changed. The fact is, this person you're worried about has probably already been back on SL, you just don't know about it. Unless you have proof, there's little you can do about it. And quite honestly, I don't think LL really cares as long as they behave themselves. ...Dres
  22. Now that V2 supports multiple layers, why not just find different tattoos you like and layer them together? Just a thought. ...Dres
  23. That is true about the stipends; and if they charged for use of the "Advanced" viewer they'd make a killing. But I think that idea would not be the slightest bit popular among existing non-premium residents, and that counts for a large number of users. *pictures nails being driven into a coffin* Besides that... what about third party viewers? ...Dres
