  1. They might just not want to be bothered. They might be targets of harrassment. Some folks who have been banned on the forums are currently engaged in very harsh harrassment campaigns of some of the residents right now... (but since they've been banned here, and their targets are not regulars here, folks here might not know about it). - This sort of things makes the rounds now and then, and when it does; victims feel a bit of chill against being out in the public. LLs is very slow sometimes to address potentially criminal harrassment. Some folks don't want people trolling their groups. Some are in groups for the sexxors they don't want mum knowing about. Some folks are in groups that are -NOT- about the sexxors they don't want their sugar daddy knowing about. =^^= (I've found at least one group with rules that the members must be open to being 'inspected' by certain others with no notice... so yeah, some people in such groups may feel a need to hide groups that otherwise let them be 'normal' now and then...) Some people just don't want to lead 105% of their online existence out in the public eye where every perv, griefer, and busy-body gets up in their business about nothing at all...
  2. Yep, I often carry a platform with me of the size of my land, when shopping for buildings. Or of my buildings, when shopping for land. If I can't rez it - attach it to avatar and sit down in the middle of the area, then move it around to see if everything fits the way I need. - Best done with a platform on which you have a texture grid, so you can get the numbers of what you're looking at.
  3. Yep. Chances are you can put in a ticket now, and get the land listed for auction or sale. Try the AR method too, ARing the governor if it won't let you use the name. Just be warned that they will often put it for auction, and a land flipper will come in and outbid you hoping to sell it to you...
  4. See here for some recommended settings: http://catnapkitty.wordpress.com/2010/08/08/getting-started-in-second-life/#Camera_Setup My settings and Penny's, both ont he same page for comparrision.
  5. RebelAngel92 wrote: Well its not that hard to make this observation when you have seen what I have seen in SL over the years of logging in & playing. Its human nature to judge "others" as a group and folks of your own kind as individuals. You can get cut off in traffic 3 times by a person of the same ethnic background and just be mad at 'that crazy driver', but get cut off by 1 of another ethnic background and people will start making ethnic comments, never noticing the 100 drivers that did -NOT- cut them off. So ask yourself how many Italians, Germans, and Romanians have -NOT- done a phishing scam? When you start to do that, its get a lot more complicated and it starts to become clearer that bias is in play and needs to be screened out. Its human nature though. Anyone who claims they do not do it is likely doing it -more- than the rest of us because they are not being mindful of it. (Thus what Shakyamuni meant by 'mindfulness as the path to enlightenment' - you can't get anywhere until you first become actually aware of where you are.) When Yeshua said "let he who is free of sin cast the first stone' he was not just saying the good folks can do the stoning here... he was reminding us all that we -ALL- have the same general flaws. To try and pretend we don't, usually reveals we're possessed of more than our fair share of them due to hiding it from ourselves. RebelAngel92 wrote: http://www.iprcenter.gov/ I don't know what else to say other than I filed a long report here explaining the issue, and all the Hosts of the site I could find on google, I think that other merchants who hold intellectual property rights do the same thing especially when you know your work has been posted there the more who file the more chance hopefully it will get taken down and they will legally do something here about the Bot's, and finally justice will be served to the person who is running this service, and all of those making donations, as well as posting the content themselves. Something needs to be done to save Second Life from this grief. Here folks can get behind you. Though I don't think general griefing is as common as some do (I think they selectively target, and focus on certain themes or kinds of areas - so some folks experience amazing amounts of it, and others next to none), any level of it needs to be dealt with, and dealt with more harshly than is presently being done.
  6. Find the owner of the land. Go to: https://my.secondlife.com/firstname.lastname Of the land owner. Leaving lastname blank if they don't have one. If a page with and error message comes up, file a support tickect to get the land sold. And maybe an AR to get it attention (AR govenor linden if it won't let you use the land owner's name). But if a real profile comes up, its still a valid owner who's still paying their bills, and all you can do is hope they someday respond to you.
  7. There's one more radical option: Shrink. Many new user avatars are over 7 feet tall. If you scale yourself down to between 5 and 6 feet, and then resize your house - you will discover that a 512m lot is bigger than many RL houses... http://pennycow.blogspot.com/2011/07/matter-of-scale.html And if your house is mesh, shrinking it can reduce its prim cost: http://catnapkitty.wordpress.com/category/second-life/reducing-prim-costs/ - But note that if not mesh, you can reduce its cost by selectively changing the 'object type' under the features tab of portions of the building (same link as above, second article).
  8. Demian Arbizu wrote: Isn't it policy now to sell abandoned lots, so logically there should be no auctions. Logical yes, but there are still a -LOT- of them. I think this happens when somebody puts in a ticket for an older abandoned lot that isn't up for sale. Instead of putting it for sale, they'll often auction it (and this makes me seriously question their database - because with any normal database the moment they made a policy to sell abandoned land, a 5 minute query should have been able to list every abandoned lot in all of SL for sale). Other times, it seems to happen to lots that I had thought were owned... but I've not yet seen it on one such that I was tracking so I can't be sure. The majority of auctions get at least 1 bidder. Though its no longer all of them like it used to be. By contrast many for sale abandoned lots seem to get no attention and just sit there. Often because there's a reason (blight build usually, or bad land cut) nearby... but just as often an amazing lot will sit there and collect dust...

I think we are all guilty at times of the "me" syndrome. I try not to be but I know I have been at times. Very true and frustratingly so. So stop doing it on MY reply! This is MY interwebz!!! =^^= As to this thread - long as we all recognize that its a good general topic, with good general advice - and that plenty of people make the OPs mistake while having good intentions, it can be handy educational advice for others. To OP: Don't take your whole store down and give up. Just retool, rebrand, and relaunch. A setback is just another word for a new opportunity. Having worked in Poser back in the day with Wardrobe Wizard - the question is obvious to me. Did I ask it or did someone else, cause I think I asked something -like it-. And yes to your answer... This was a constant nightmare back in my Poser days when using deformers to fit an object made for one figure to another... Sometimes there was no solution and whole projects would have to be done over with different elements. Othertimes, you'd need heavy postwork, or to just export the whole thing as a 3D model into some unrigged format for Carrara / 3DSMax / etc and remodel portions... - That last solution being too much to ask for hobby art. I envision a future where people will want 'magnet zone deforming' like Poser, to correct what the deformer has deformed... but this only working to a limited degree... and the processing and bandwidth costs of it all will be insane for something streamed online. That's why I just looked at the standard sizes, chose the one closest to my then shape, and made myself fit it - finding my uniqueness in my avatar's face. Even -WITH- a deformer, clothes not using it might come to be preferred by people wanting higher than 1fps... Not to mention the buttons... and the horror of what people will say when they come to understand what that question means... And of course, they will -ALL- blame LLs for it, when its just a problem of 'nature of the beast.'
  11. Masami Kuramoto wrote: Addressing the question how the deformer will handle buttons: not at all! Objects of this size are supposed to be part of the texture. Modelling them is a stupid idea. You obviously don't own the same line of mesh shorts as I do. I think I have them from a couple of places. - One of them has modeled buttons, and the difference is striking. Not to mention such things as drawstrings, lace and frills, things coming out of pockets, and so many small details that when modeled, are just amazing to see.
  12. Amethyst Jetaime wrote: Pussycat Catnap wrote: ...Catering to 'ageplayers' may be legal in some places in the world (in the US, since its all virtual) - but it violated the rules of society, AND the social norms.... Actually this is wrong. In my state it is illegal to even depict sexual situations involving minors regardless if all the participants are adult. The prohibition is for all media, including cartoons, digital images etc. Actually it is correct, but I suspect you misread me. "since its all virtual" is the key word. No real minors involved. Just cartoon pixels, fictional characters, etc... This is why for example, Romeo and Juliet is still legal in the US. Its also why a lot of hentai is still legal... and similar things. - Supreme Court ruled on this, so its legal in your state no matter what state law says. Until you involve a real minor... its just disgusting, not illegal.

Beauty of public forums like this is when we post, we're not the only ones reading. People forget that when they say things to someone else, it isn't only read by that person. It also sometimes is not ONLY intended for a person but to answer more completely to help others who might be drawn to a topic. Many more read this forum than post here. Too many iconoclastic types round SL for that. People who often fail to realize there is a universe beyond the 'me'...
  14. maxgertler1 wrote: Hey, i'm looking for data for my college paper, so if anyone could be so kind as to comment with answers to the following questions it would make my life much easier. 1. What gender is your character? 2. Do you feel the second life community is sexist? Why or why not? 3. As a male/female in second life, do you feel at all limited by your gender? Is there anything you can/can't do? 4. Do you think the real outside world would be more or less sexist then in second life? Why? Thank you SO MUCH, i really appreciate it! First this: Because folks need to cut it out with all these surveys. And your questions: 2 and 4: Yes, and its more sexist than RL. Its like going back 3 decades sometimes in here - on gender issues AND race issues. In certain places, its like going sideways over to Afghanistan / Tribal Pakistan (Gor).
  15. Phil Deakins wrote: Pussycat Catnap wrote: But note Qie's post right below yours - about that Guardian article. That article is a short little rant by some fuddy-duddy [...] Presumably he's "some funny-duddy" because his opinion doesn't match yours, and that's not a valid reason at all. You specifically mentioned the gent's urinal so I'll comment on that. First, the person who offered it as a work of art didn't create it, so s/he wasn't an 'artist' for that piece. Noticing that something has an aesthetically pleasing shape doesn't make the one who noticed it an artist because s/he created nothing. And yet that piece revolutionized graphic design, modern propaganda, art, and oddly enough; typography. 2 of those industries started that day. Those museum blokes were just stuck in outdated thinking, and needed to be shocked... Duchamp's statement was a metaphor for 'urinating on the art world.' His act is studied by students of design and typography to this day, and would be for 'political propaganda art' students if they had schools for that. As for the fuddy-duddy, I call him that based on his criteria for dismissing video-game art. It was one sole reason: "why is an adult man in a real profession even playing a video game?" His entire rant against MoMa was based on assumptive bias about the hobbies of a researcher...
  16. If any of them has a script, you can find it in the official viewer under about land - script info - select object - highlight. Otherwise it gets tricky, and they blocked this info from being used on other people's land, so good luck finding that expensive no-copy club server you lost months ago when rezzing it in your... oh, that's me... /shakes paw at people who horde my lootz by not having auto-return. Oh and hey, if the person who left those prims is me -PLEASE- return them.
  17. More reports from the field: http://paywriter.tumblr.com/post/37187308941/muted http://nwn.blogs.com/nwn/2012/12/flatterbot-an-avatar-bot-second-life.html#comments And to post on the feed, open somebody's profile up, and the first tab for feed, type stuff there. Also on the web, like this: https://my.secondlife.com/pussycat.catnap These days discussion on the feeds is about 3 to 4 times more active than the forums - but you need to be active about moderating all the folks from countries that begin with "It" and "Br" (...) who post rear view up-cam shots of unclothed avatars that have low quality skins where the 'bits' texture wraps around to the rear and spreads, or posts pics of people 'in the act' on the public side rather than just privately, or pics of 'crack' (an not talking about the street rock either...)... Cause um... yeah... =^^=
  18. Bottom feeders always try to pretend anyone with common decency is an uppity nosey body with unusual morals and that thee is no such thing as a universal set of basic norms, ethics, and morals. But there are. And if you can't see that, you should consider some serious self-reflection. Few people are genuinely confused on an issue like this.
  19. Get up. Make coffee. Sneak into SL while getting ready. Maybe screenshot or two for the feeds. Go to work. Sneak into my.secondlife and read some comments. Look at forums, make over-dramatic posts I feel a horrible need to edit a few minutes after. Get some work done. Eat Lunch. Get some work done. Read the news. Head home. Chat up people in RL. Log into SL. Explore around a bit. Work on one of my builds. Eat dinner. Listen to some Rasta music. Lament the lack of more than one active reggae club in SL, again. Consider re-opening my Reggae club, again. Look for the prims to my club. While clicking to rez one, suddenly remember what a pain in the butt it is and how little time I have to run it, and abandon the idea. Again. Chat up my RL partner. Chat up one of my SL friends. Make some tea or coffee. 40% odds it'll be Chai, 10% odds Turkish coffee, 20% odds some other tea. 20% odds black coffee, 10% odds a Latte. Take some SL screenshots. Call it a day...
  20. Note also how its slicing into the window of the building that is actually on the lot. AR this, and send a note to the folks of the Arbor Project group to get help calling linden attention to it.
  21. Long before you go premium, I would suggest taking some classes at Caledon Oxbridge, NCI, and / or Builder Brewery to get an understanding of things like land ownership, prims, permissions, and so on. Also explore around inworld for a while, find some friends and a community you like - and use that as a guide to determine how best and to where to make that move into having land in SL. You should find a reason to want SL land, and only then get it.
  22. Basic levels of policing in a society: The Law - this is the lowest common denominator. Meet this bar or the society beats you down - removing your liberty or life. Living at this level is usually immoral. Violators risk having their so-called 'inalienable rights' alienated. The Rules - follow this conduct or risk sanction by the society. Just following the rules is amoral. Break this and lose your money, your access to things not considered rights, and so on. Social Norms - basic accepted conduct to avoid being socially scorned. Ethics - the path of being seen as virtuous, and thereby getting praise. Ethical people become role-models. But ethics is a false morality - based on approval. This is Thrasymachus' justice. Morality - the path of actually having internalized good conduct for no reward. Moral people are often scorned or 'alienated' of their rights, for reminding society of the flaws in its ethics. This is Socrates' justice. Just because something is 'legal' or 'within the rules' does not mean it should be done - that's bottom feeding. Catering to 'ageplayers' may be legal in some places in the world (in the US, since its all virtual) - but it violated the rules of society, AND the social norms. I would argue it is an immoral path. We can find plenty of 'ethical heroes' in our culture who have done it... It is never good to make the argument that you are 'just following the rules' or 'its ok because it doesn't break the rules'.
  23. weena Janic wrote: ok i just received an e-mail telling me that some stuff have been removed out of my marketplace store cause of intellectual proprety i sell bikes in SL and in the search words "ONLY" i wrote harley davidson so if anyone types harley davidson it'll bring my bikes up. So, potential fraud -AND- trademark violation. Fraud because they weren't what they claimed to be. Trademark violation because you used somebody else's trademark. Harley Davidson is such a recognized and iconic brand name because they take enforcement of their trademark seriously... LLs did you a favor pulling those. The last thing you'd ever want is a cease and desist letting showing up on your RL doorstep from that company. By getting them yanked early - you're being saved from what could be a much worse outcome down the road. Pain to set it up again, sure - but look at it as an opportunity to re-theme them. Plenty of good motorcycles in SL, and clubs for them, and so on - lots of opportunities to market to that community using a brand name you build for yourself. Go around to some of the motorcycle spots in SL and see what folks are doing. - Don't copy one of their brands. Don't even try to keyword sneak into their search (many do this, but its unwise for the reasons you now know). Just look at the themes in the community, and find your own original spin on it.
  24. Masami Kuramoto wrote: Pussycat Catnap wrote: Look at my gallery, in my sig - and recreate that in an Open Sim. That's how'd you'd get my attention. If I did, I would find it ripped, imported to SL, and sold on the marketplace in no time. Well... Until that's all sorted out, you can't really expect everyone to give up their sense of selves for the OS-Utopia. And that's the thing. If I can't be some form of 'me', why bother showing up? Its the same thing that kept me from ever getting past the first few moments in Blue Mars. I wasn't interested in their brand of Hawaiian surfer... I imagine it was the perfect world, for someone who's fantasy was to be a Hawaiian surfer. But the rest of... /shrug. Most people are not in SL to whittle away for hours in a sandbox or build platform - they're here for communities and self exploration. Be it a desire to be some weird purple fox creature in leather... or to be a california beach blond with a Jersey Shore tan... people want to express. If OS has all the content creators - they won't get the rest of us until they start creating content.
  25. I didn't say a single thing. I just kept the whindow open, let it all play out, and when done, found the person on the radar (they were half a sim away, we'd never even been within rez distance of each other), and reported them with a screenshot and link to this thread. I -hope- a linden gets involved sooner rather than later. ESPECIALLY if this is linked to the account phishing...
