  1. Looks like it changed your default from old 2003 lighting to having windlight on - causing you to now notice how your lighting likely looks to everyone else. Firestorm's only a few versions behind the LL viewer, so if what you're seeing now is what I expect it is, its going to hit you in Firestorm also within a month or so. Look in the graphics and see what the settings are. And if it is this, that lighting and shadows is now on, "windlight" / differed lighting... then start editing your lights. If not, post up some screenshots so we can see what you're getting.
  2. If you want subcultures - you really don't want to focus on the business and content creators. You want to focus on the various socializers. People hooked into communities both as the ones running them, and folks who are regular members of them. And then a few people who dabble around. This is just yet another one of those "people who don't have any connection or understanding to SL wanting to do up a quick study from the outside looking in..." I see your account dates to 2009, 10 days newer than mine... but you have no profile, no posts here, no feed, not even an avatar image... These things do not inspire confidence in your ability to know who to talk to, what to talk about, and so on.

Yours Bloodline Queen Yummy Fairlady So toss Bloodlines, buy a sim, get a scripter to make you your own new combat HUD, and move forward. Anyone can be a 'vampire' in SL by just buying a set of prim teeth and an outfit in 12-shades of black... If you really despised what Bloodlines did, you'd drop it. If you look at SL weapons and combat systems - there are people that use griefer weapons that will work anywhere with push enabled... but the roleplayers all use items with combat-meter HUDs that only work in places where they are enabled, and only on people who also have a copy of the HUD. If you look at the SGS system, it even has a Vampire RP: Venexia. One that works by everyone on sim using the same HUD - and picking vampire, human, or one of the other options... - Join that, one like it, or start one. They grief nobody.

On the other hand it scares me. How dumb will their choices be if they are already too dumb to vote? It couldn't be any worse than the people who go out there voluntarily... - But it would force a country to the center, more than likely. It would put an end to trying to appeal to the lunatic fringe. That would kill the influence of groups like the Tea Party, the NRA, PETA, Occupy, and such. - Anyone on the extremes would be marginalized. It would also make it more difficult to ensure the protection of the rights of minorities. But numbers would -usually- matter more than power (South Africa, where blacks were the 'minority' of power despite the majority in numbers - a common theme in repressive regimes in the Middle East as well). However, improving civil rights of a numeric minority, like Native Americans, or like Tamils in Sri Lanka - would get very difficult. Supressing counter-culture movements would get easier. This all means that it would have to come with even stronger Constitutional protections for the rights of the disempowered, or it would fall into a tyranny of the majority. - So kind of a wash...

  6. Also if the admin of the land is checking, it kind of means you still haven't tried to do all of them from a safe location. Mainland sim, middle of nowhere (ocean). Preferably one with scripting, object entry, and object rezzing ALL turned off. Ideally, start by replacing your avatar with one of the system defaults, then log out and clear all the things people have said to clear. Then log back in in that middle of nowhere spot, and wear your things one at a time...
  7. LLs has been known to log into user accounts to handle support issues on those accounts. The last time I recall this was in 2009. But not to engage in BDSM play... Phishing has been going rampant of late. With people posting fake urls to marketplace listings in group chats and elsewhere... and so the more likely outcome is that her account was hacked. Contact her in RL and suggest cleaning the computer, looking for viruses and such, and password changes.
  8. Before presuming all that you are presuming... Try the suggestion mentioned above. And do it all with the official viewer, while on a mainland sim that is open ocean. While doing it, open up 'About Land' and look at script Information (button at the bottom of the About Land panel), then the scripts for your avatar: These kinds of topics pop up in here all the time, and 99% of the time, its something the person is wearing... so while you might be on the 1%, the odds are against it - and we'd at least like to see you check and show us first.
  9. Reikokimyo wrote: Not all Libertarians are for handing everything over to corperations. There are some out there that would like to see government being only for the protection of the people. Government regulates. It is the only actor that can regulate itself. It is the only actor that can regulate corps. Remove that, and who checks the power of corps? A post on Daily Kos back during the elections: http://www.dailykos.com/story/2012/11/05/1156004/-Tuesday-I-cast-my-first-Democratic-ballot-ever# Her father is a lawyer, and we'd spend a lot of Fridays and Saturdays dining and talking politics. He opened my eyes with one simple concept for which I had no rebuttal. He said (and I am paraphrasing a bit) the following: "John, the government can have too much power, as you suggest. But that power has a check on it in the form of the Constitution and the legal system behind it. But corporate power has no check. It grows and it takes what it wants and there is nothing you can do about it. That is why libertarianism (closest system to my beliefs at the time) fails. It's why Republicanism fails. It's why you're wrong." You don't have to hand anything to the corps, you merely have to fail to keep them from taking it.
  10. Wait... SL Isn't dead? This isn't the Blue Mars forums? Could have sworn -everyone- told me Blue Mars killed SL in 2009. So yeah, whatever this is, it'll still be here in 2014. The real question oi whether or not Patterns and Creatorverse will be.
  11. iCade wrote: Eh, personally love Firestorm to the point where I never even touched Phoenix. Hopefully Firestorm won't be next. Firestorm has no reason to be -next-. Until such time as LLs puts out a 'Vx' that is not compatible with the current v3, and then starts breaking server compatibility with v3, TPVs based on v3 have little to worry about as they will be able to stay current. I'm sure there's a lot of mouth-frothing going on right now in Phoenix groups, blogs, forums, etc... But those folks have been kind of irrationally clining to the past for a while now anyway - so that's to be expected. V1 ended in 2009, its 2012, soon 2013. Versions of Windows being a notable exception; most active software doesn't last this long past its shelf life... LL and the Firestorm team aren't killing anything. LLs is moving forward with improvements. And to make things work better often means leaving the past behind. If you adopt a new and better way of handling something, the old way might just have to go away to make room.
  12. Do the Gaeline ones have an invisiprim wrapped around them, or are my graphics settings playing tricks on my eyes? Because I like all the shoes I can buy for these, but invisiprims can wreck havok on higher graphics settings.
  13. Do you still have a copy of the house in your inventory? Because you probably want to start over. The best thing to do to replace the 'pictures' that are on the wall is to edit them, choose the select face option, and click the picture itself - then drag your texture to that. If this is all very confusing, I suggest some classes at 'New Citizens Inc' (if you search for them, the one that says kuala is where they coordinate their classes), Caledon Oxbridge, and/or builders brewery. These places will have classes on basic building concepts - which will cover things like changing out a texture, and what happened with your walls. I have some guides for newbies on my blog (links in my sig line). But it sounds like you're just beyond where my guides end.
  14. This one been on my mind of late: The jail cell scene of the young man in this feels familiar. For any of the youths who've also found themselves in that spot, or one of like despair, and are asking how life got to this point and if there is anyway out... the hand of Jah is there, waiting to lift you out of darkness. They will say that is superstition, you might think so yourself, but those of us who've been in darkness and risen out are here to tell you we know better. Yeshua Christ is within, waiting to help you rise up. Lyrics: https://my.secondlife.com/pussycat.catnap/posts/50c8cb741e99f0000200374b for i was a soul who was lost and my life was in dismay for amongst evil forces in which i played guns and ammunition were my chosen way of life with God fearin people i choose to strife i never lived like he wanted i'm still mindful of what he taught me so now i beg and plea i'm on my bended knees God father u rescue me
  15. TONS. So it depends on your interests. Just type your interests into search, in the groups tab, and start joining stuff: If most of the people in the group have not logged in for a few months or more, leave. (Not sure if we can post a list that has the names, so window blocked them.) Then go into a group and look at the notices. If there are none there, leave. If there's a lot of notices or very busy chat - that's what you want for keeping up with things.
  16. A viewer change is basically just a viewer. All these viewer wars are basically just a like a battle between using Firefox, Internet Explorer, or Chrome. You still land on the same web page, but the bookmark button might be in a different place. As long as you remain with v3 viewers, or remain within v1 viewers - inventory will be and load fine. Switching between a v3 and a v1 can get muddled, but only if you accidentally put your "cache" folder in the same place. But v1 viewers are getting rarer now... Between Firestorm and the official viewer - there should be no issues. You could use then back and forth switching constantly, and should not have any issues. They're 98.5% identical code, with 1% just being moving buttons around, and 0.5% being something only in one of them. (Firestorm puts a lot of v3 buttons in places that are closer to where they were before 2009, and relabels them to the old names.)
  17. Two things that can improve your graphics without impacting much: In debug settings (Advanced - Show Debug Settings) change "rendervolumeLODfactor" to a number over 4. Change meshmaxConcurrentRequests to about 100. Two others that will have a minor impact, but light enough you may or may not notice: In Advanced, turn off HTTP Textures, or if its off, turn it on. For different people, one setting or the other is best... In Graphics - Hardware, turn off Texture Compression, or if its off, turn it on. Same thing - helps some hurts others. And try the official viewer, might not be as heavy of a burden on your system. Again, seems one works better for some, the other works better for others. Compare.
  18. At least one radio station I dialed through last night stated they refused to report more on the incident until more facts were out. BUT... they then went into a long report about them not reporting, and the dangers the others were getting into by reporting too much too fast too soon... /facepalm. That said, already today facts are starting to conflict the first day facts - such as it appearing the shooter and his mother had no connection to the school, though he might have attended it as a young child. - They are though, the station that noted the attack in 1927 that is actually the worst of them, and that the trendline for these things is actually going down. The same is true in molestation and kidnapping - its actually a lot less common now than it used to be, even by crime statistics (as in, not only was it reported less in past, but when reported still totaled more than it does now). Its more newsworthy now and news is globally 24/7 instant. The same for other violent crimes (including sex crimes). While we need to mourn, and then we need to solve and change things that are leading to this - we also need to not fall into the trap of thinking the world is going down the tubes (it is environmentally, but not in this regard). So we should not sink into depression. Better to come together, work together, fight back, and find paths to peace.
  19. LLs gambling policy isn't set by LLs, but by the US federal government... The SL policy is there to keep the feds from coming in and flipping the off switch on the entire grid. You want it to change, you want to add one more vice to SL, you better go petition Congress first. That said your post was unclear to me - I couldn't tell if you were advocating for bringing gambling back into SL, or noting that you think people are sneaking it in, or something else... I'm not actually sure what you were going for.
  20. solstyse wrote: You say that America is on the path to becoming a corporatocracy, so I have to ask how much further you think we have to go? It seems to me like we're already there. Yeah... We're essentially there. My question is will they push it to the point that people eventually rise up violently, or will we manage to reform out of it in time... I hope we can find a peaceful solution, but the corporate powers do not know the meaning of excess and they're on a path to pushing common folks to a breaking point. Occupy... well occupy lost any credibility when it refuses to have a list of goals or demands... But the frustration in it is out there, and over time its building up more and more in common folks. Babylon's gonna burn... but will that be a metaphor, or a literal truth? People will say "really, you're making all that fuss over Facebook at work, that's not what you should be doing at work anyway." ON the surface thay are right on the second point. But... what this is, is a trendline of controls... and its the overall weight they are pushing down on common folks that is oppressive. And criminalizing the failure to follow the dictates of your employer? That's not trivial at all...
  21. The Mayan thing is not the end of the world - but lunatics might think it is... Otherwise I have no idea... Its strange. One radio station I dialed through on my drive home today noted that in the past few years we've actually had less of them - but they've been better reported. They also cited a school attack in the US in t1927 that killed over 38 kids, with a bomb (Bath school attack). Which makes today the third worst, not second. Not that that is something to cheer... Lunatics have been around for a long time. Go through police reports of a major US city in the early 1970s and be prepared to be freaked out... On a day to day basis, there's a lot less bad stuff going on now. And even the crazy stuff is not as common - though this week has been rough.
  22. There's also a scam going around right now where people start by accusing you of pushing them, then move on to flattering you, and finally end with asking for money... So if the demands then sparked a strange sort of one-way conversation from them, it might be that.
  23. The USA is on the path to being a Corporatocracy. Libertarians would gladly hand our system off to them by reducing government regulation and doing away with civil rights. Thereby doing away with all of the protections that ensure 'rights' outweigh 'liberty'. Too much 'liberty' with a check to ensure 'rights' just means the powerful step on the weak with impunity - the whole reason the USA has the Bill of Rights and divided government to begin with was to prevent that (the founders just never envisioned there would be a force that could be more dangerous with power than a government - but the system they built is ideal to stop either). GOPers play right into it by virtue of their love of the rich - who run the corps. It blinds them to the reasons they objected to strong government to begin with. Its not government that is bad, but abuse of power. And in the modern age, government works to prevent abuse of power by an even more dangerous hydra: corps. Issues like the Citizen's United ruling have more or less handed 'US Inc.' the reigns of power... At some point, its going to get downright nasty over here... This ruling is a stopgap. But its no more. We need -more-. And we need to get the people sitting in the halls of government to wake up to the tool they have and use it to stand up for 'rights' rather than being in the pockets of corps. - Things that will not happen... Eventually there will be a change on the Court, and ruling like this will get undermined. Much as what happened with Citizen's United.
  24. I've said some rough things about LLs in past - but rarely had anything pulled from here. The few times I've been moderated, its been for being a bit rough on another user. I'm only dubious about one of those calls, the others I likely would have self moderated if not so 'riled up' at the time I'd posted them. One thing that helps if you're going to criticize the company is to steer clear of foul language or foul phrasing, and to be on point. Don't meander around with a litany of accusations that are not exactly on point to the topic at hand. And be balanced. They don't do -everything- wrong after all...
  25. Czari Zenovka wrote: I checked out your page to bookmark it...and discovered I had already bookmarked this page awhile back - lol. Thank you and others who have provided great info on this topic (as well as many others). When I first "came back" to SL in 2009, I googled about it to avoid the confusion I'd had in 2006. Found a great getting started guide, but it dated to 2006. So when I wrote mine, it began as a list of things the older guide hadn't mentioned by virtue of having aged out, combined with my own take on the things that guide was still relevant for. Then the viewer got updated 3 million times, and I've had to edit it a lot... But the goal's always been to make that one page as useful as possible to the newbie, and do most of my advocating on my other pages. - Though I do make some strong recommendations, and the one to use some camera setting between Penny or mine, or in their range... is one such. It really makes it easier to move around in SL when you can grab your avatar with a mouse click and run, and the camera still shows you something that seems to relate to where you're going. The default way above and behind look means you can 'outrun' your camera in a sense, not able to see where you're going fast enough to react to what's in the way up ahead.
