Why does Second Life run so badly on a good computer?
Lyssa Greymoon replied to xlime4's question in Technical
You're looking for errors, either file system errors or physical errors on the drive. First, do the Malware and antivirus scan. Get Malwarebytes (Malwarebytes.com) and let it do its thing. I assume you have Windows virus protection on, check in the security settings to make sure it's running. Then open the Windows File Explorer and right click on your hard drive. Select Properties from that menu. click the tools tab then the check button to search for file system errors. You'll want to get a SMART utility to check your hard drive. Passmark's DiskCheckup seems good. https://www.passmark.com/products/diskcheckup/ It'll let you know if your drive has any issues and let you run self-tests on the drive.- 36 replies

Why does Second Life run so badly on a good computer?
Lyssa Greymoon replied to xlime4's question in Technical
There’s something else wrong with your computer. The frame rates are abnormally slow, and the resetting failures aren’t normal. Getting an NVIDIA card isn’t going to help. Run malware & antivirus scans. Check the hard drive. Get a utility to check the SMART status. If it’s a mechanical drive not an SSD run a surface scan too.- 36 replies

Why does Second Life run so badly on a good computer?
Lyssa Greymoon replied to xlime4's question in Technical
I figured that was what happened since AFAIK no viewer will set it that low for you on anything. The fact you have a very capable CPU & GPU running at half the draw distance the viewer will default to for a potato suggests there's something wrong with your computer.- 36 replies

Definitely get yourself an Ethernet cable. Running with a 32M draw distance suggests there’s something wrong with your computer aside from SL. I would run a malware scan on it, and check the task manager to see if something else is eating up resources.- 36 replies

A sleeping computer shouldn’t use much more power than one that’s been shut down, maybe a watt or less.. Shutting them down instead of putting them to sleep should save you closer to $1.50 a year than a day. You’re okay putting them to sleep. -

Sounds like a gimmick to charge three times as much for an item. I’ll pass.

The graphics card on that Mac hasn't really aged well. Gotta dial the graphics settings back a bit.

I don't get what kind of guy would do this kind of thing with someone they've just met.But sure, give me your money, and as soon as you find out I'm a complete jerk and leave, I'm off to spend it on steampunk goggles and plague doctor masks. -

Jsut joined SL why does this game run so slow?
Lyssa Greymoon replied to Eveningdust's topic in General Discussion Forum
I was throwing shade at the CPU, not the GPU. Taking another look at the socket 1156 CPUs, I don't think an upgrade from the i7-860 makes any sense. -

What are your graphics settings? Shadows are probably a bit beyond that CPU’s capability. If you’re comfortable working on your own computer (which I assume you are since your have a 3 year old graphics card in a ten year old computer) I’d look up upgrading that CPU to a faster Xeon if the motherboard can handle it. -

If last names came back to the registration portal, I'd collect some new alts with fun names again. If it was just a premium perk, I wouldn't care. -
