Sorry if this topic has been raised before or this is the wrong thread (tried searching but nothing), but how does this OnDuty "pregnancy" thing work?

I've heard so many people in SL talk about it as if it was real (!!) "My BF's got me preggo again and I had to go to the abortion clinic!!!". I mean come on, please...

So how do you avoid a bun in the oven with this system? I'm definitly not about to pay them L$150 for a contraceptive pill etc. So does it work like the bloodline vampire thing where you can register to permamently remove yourself from their database or do you have to wear their "free pregnancy belly" for the system to work in the first place? In which case, no problem - I'll just avoid wearing or accepting anything remotely similar.

Or will I have to avoid SLsex forever, just to be on the safe side?

I find myself having a rather naughty chuckle to myself thinking how it would be if the OnDuty fixings did register every coupling they were involved with, in the same way that the Bloodlines registers every bite given and soul obtained.  Would they have to have categories such as "most popular girl in the college" and league tables for the person who had the most abortions?!? oo-er :matte-motes-sarcasm:

The OnDuty pregnancy only works if you actually select to go ahead and pick up the gear from an OnDuty vendor.  Some people go along with it, and after nine days (each day representing a month in SL) you can toddle along to an/the OnDuty clinic and meet other loons  happy parents/parents-to-be, and roleplay some more.  http://slurl.com/secondlife/Jeongam/196/242/55

If you do the SLex with an OnDuty pen1s or the dick who wears one, as it's a freebie he's unlikely to stand by you and help you bring up the kid, or put a ring on your finger, so my advice would be, do the SLex if you really enjoy it, but beware the man with the talking pen1s.

Umm, yeah thanks. I kinda worked that out for myself. My question was how to avoid pregnancy in the first place. I have been told by several people that the Onduty system can get me pregnant anyway. One said their HUD showed that I could be impregnated by it, despite not wearing any Onduty or Xcite "bits" or whatever system it works with.

I have no interest in "carrying it to term" or playing ball with their system, but neither do I wish to be spammed for the next nine days with messages telling me how my "pregnancy" is going.

So, my question remains, how do you block the system in the first place to avoid getting knocked up? Easy to say to avoid anyone using an onduty appendage, but I do know of someone who seems to take great delight in using one without their partners knowledge and then getting them pregnant.

Seems like it could be a life of celibacy for me from now on...

There IS no pregnancy in SL, only choosing to roleplay it.  You are not pregnant and can't get pregnant.  There are no 'baby avatars' that will be born to roleplaying residents, although some residents will roleplay as babies or children.

Ok, well it looks like people have no more of an idea on how to block the system than I do.

Yes, I am aware that pregnancy in SL is make-believe (hence my use of quotes etc), but that doesn't stop some system such as Onduty from spamming you etc, in much the same way that the bloodlines vampire system does (or did).

It is easy to reiterate the "just say no" mantra, but that's not particularly useful "advice" and certainly doesn't answer my question.

Perhaps when someone does discover how to block the system, they'd care to post the details here.

Never heard of the OnDuty stuff, but I have tried some of the other systems that allow you to roleplay pregnancy risk. Every one I have ever seen only works if both parties are wearing an active HUD or adult 'bits' that are keyed to react to that particular system. If you don't use their "brand" of play toys, they can't force you to roleplay anything. And even if you do, they all have a "Reset" option that allows you to choose not to be 'pregnant'.

I suppose that like some of the vampire HUDs out there, someone could create a HUD that somehow tracks individuals that the HUD wearer attempts to have roleplay sex with, and claims a pregnancy risk on their behalf, even if they aren't using compatable gear. Seems rather immature and pointless. My response to anyone telling me that had 'knocked me up' without my intentional agreement to do that kind of roleplay, just because their HUD or add-ons said so, would be "Nope, sorry, I'm on Norplant. Completely sterile, bub. Go find someone who wants to play that game with you. I'm not her."

That's a good question, but some systems do seem to find away around the mute facility.

What I was hoping, was to find a way to block it completely. But damn if I'm going to get myself "pregnant" just to find out how it works!! lol

Ceera's suggestion would be ideal, but haven't seen anything which spoofs the system as a way of blocking it. I have found it spams on chat channel 2, so maybe I'll script something to log it's messages and see if I can't work something out myself.

In the mean time, I'll just carry a large pair of scissors with me. That and the promise that if someone does get me pregnant, I will be the last girl they ever do!!

What a load of sh1t several people talk. Unless someone sets some kind of follower script onto you, (and that would be seen as griefing anyway and would be a potentially bannable offense) you simply cannot get pregnant just by "having sex" (rolls eyes skywards) with someone with any kind of pen1s attachment in Second Life.

For you to get spammed by any of them, it means you've given permission to communicate in some way with the script, and more fool you if you do.

And none of them have anything similar to a Bloodlines system.

I thought this thread was funny when it started; now I just think its stupid. Think about it. Really. Anything that has the ability to spam someone is seen as a griefer tool. A friend of mine could put "spells " on people - from butterflies to flames - and he got reported as a griefer, when all he thought he was doing was having a bit of fun.  No way would OnDuty be allowed to continue with their product if it was this spammy.

Seems it may be trying to mimick the bloodlines model, how successful is not apparent.  There is a blog post by someone who has had some interaction here.

Regardless, the solution is clear.  Someone needs to create an STD Hud for the female population to wear.  Then the unsupportive fathers-to-be have something of their own to remember the special moment by.  :smileyvery-happy:  Of course, they could go the "clinic" and purchase a treatment to cure their ill, or maybe even a vaccine to prevent the embarrasing infection!

Thanks for bringing the humour back.

I guess then, if this thing really does spam a person for a whole 9 days, people are just too plain embarrassed to AR it/the maker/the user for griefing them :matte-motes-confused:

I don't think it's anything like as serious as that Marigold.  AFAIK from other complaints/concerns about OnDuty pregnancy it simply tells you "You are pregnant [go and buy ...]" whenever you have sex using it.   Errr - read-back the last sentence and add caveat "If you are female", duh!

I think that's why we're all saying "ignore it or mute it, what's the problem?"

Just as funny is that the Onduty willy continually announces the location of the wearer on channel 2.  People with tools that listen on channel 2 will see this constantly when someone is nearby with an onduty part.

I am led to understand that this was so that escorts could have an onduty "john" locator when in the same sim and could go and proposition him?  I don't know if that's true or not but equally if you want to go and find Onduty wearers before they get to you and give them a virtual slap, that's how.

IM me if you're not a scripter and don't have any other tool and want a channel 2 listener.  I'm not expecting uptake to be huge somehow lol

  • 3 weeks later...

I got "knocked up" by an On-Duty **bleep**, and (like you) got a free abortion, fearing something would happen to my avatar, or I'd get bothered, or something. My friends set me straight after that, and said, "ignore it".

After that, another On-Duty **bleep** "knocked me up". I ignored it.

1) Except for the announcement telling me I was pregnant and I should come get a belly, I recieved nothing from On-Duty. So, I think SPAM concerns are probably unwarranted.

2) After the second impregnation (an, my ignoring it), I was with any number of On-Duty fellas, and not once have I been told I'm pregnant. It might be that all you need to do is ignore it once, an everyone's On-Duty will leave you a lone.

edit: Oh, C'mon! You can't say pen1s?

OMG rofl. I did an investigation and big write-up on this company once for a club I was working for when we discovered that the parts spam channel 2 with coordinates about every 2 seconds. They were blocking the security people's ability to watch the channels for other offensive stuff, not to mention the colossal amount of lag that it was causing with 30 or more people in the room!

But yea, the short version is that it has no impact on your avatar unless you care to play it out and go buy their stuff.

I found the whole opperation to be very Larry Flynt :P
