Things that Happened in SL

Recommended Posts

Back when SL required a subscription, you would have to earn Lindens via creating things or having popular places. You would also earn real money by being popular.

"Philip Linden: NO! You will not be able to buy Linden Dollars for US Dollars.

BUT, if you are a resident who makes lots of [Linden] money or generates lots of traffic [onto your in-world property], you WILL be able to get real money for your efforts. So this is the reverse of the kind of things we've seen other companies try. We are not allowing forward-conversion, but are instead starting with reverse-conversion. Allowing money to flow to the best content and experienced creators is consistent with SL's vision of a world built by its users.

The alternative of just collecting more money from casual users who then frenetically spend it on a small number of goods... we don't think that makes sense given the nature of Second Life. As the economy grows there will naturally be more consumer spending and third-party trading, etc. But we wanted to start by getting real money and the right pricing plan to our most serious creators.

You know, some people out there think if you spend a hundred hours a week doing something like Second Life, that means you are crazy. I think those people [who say that] are very shortsighted. We want people to be able to dive into SL as much as they like. Making real money is a logical part of that."

A bunch of people in the old Jessie sim got into a cold war for years on end.

Megaprims were originally created to crash sims by causing massive physics collisions.

The old Mentor program was "interesting."

When the French fascist National Front party opened a headquarters in SL in 2007, my group was amongst those protesting, an event that led eventually to an exchange of firepower, including the advent of exploding pigs.

Yes, it's all very silly. (This was before my time, I hasten to add.)

So, how was your group there? Or do you mean that you were a member of a RL group that protested the "French fascist National Front party"?

I am now the de facto "owner" of the SL Left Unity group. But I was not its founder. I became an officer in the group around 2009, and have in the last 2 years taken on most of its responsibilities.

Weird stuff that happened in SL

In 2005 I bought my first mainland plot and put down a house. On the 1st day of ownership I returned home after a shopping expedition and found a fox humping a squirrel in the middle of my living room. That was pretty f’ing weird.

Same, but last week. Wasn't even invited.

There was that nearly week long issue where you couldn't log in because the asset server swallowed its tongue. 2008ish or so....It was a big deal because really in my mind that was the golden era of SL and people went cray cray.

Does the sheer ungodly amount of research papers written on it qualify? Sheesh, I get cold shivers just from thinking back to my university time, long before I ever set foot into SL. It's like whenever you would mention virtual spaces, virtual interactions or virtual bloody ANYTHING, someone would pipe up and go "did somebody say Second Life? I wrote thirty papers on it!".

Bit political...but I remember this sim, it was like a troll magnet at the time :o Most people went there to mess around or shout at the owner..it later became a non-political music club called River Jordan and was actually really beautifully designed

I also remember Occupy SL  Maybe that was 2011?

Yep, October 2011.

(I finally had to sell off this parcel, which actually straddled two full regions, a couple of years ago. One of the saddest things I've ever done in SL. It was my home for years and years.)

Socialist protests will always be permitted in SL 😂

well then how would one go about doing this?? I would payyyy for this. to be able to bring your avatar into the real world would be so flippin amazing!

Easy in principle, not in reality. Isn't going to happen. Copyright issues abound!

If all your mesh (body, head, shape files... everything!) was available for download as the actual 3D design files, and the license terms for it all allowed such use, it could all be put in Blender and made into a 3D printer compatible file. That's not the case though and the mesh devkits I have for, say, Maitreya certainly don't allow that use.

The alternative is a 'special' viewer which would output a 3D file based on all the same mesh information it gets from the SL servers. That is, as far as I am aware, very much against LL's TOS. Similar viewers are called copybot viewers, which, rumour has it, are an effective way to get your account banned.

----

Nice thread though... some fun stuff to read in here that happened either before my time, or while I was hiding under my rock on mainland :)

That reminds me of the time that this much-vaunted "Democracy Island" was started by this famous (in small circles) professor who went on to become an advisor to the Obama campaign and got herself a tech job in the White House as well. Well, like a lot of projects, it was started with much fanfare and then...languished.

And it was not long before someone described to me the scene of an empty Democracy, with just some dragons fornicating.... I thought that was fitting. "Scalies"....
