What kind of "cursed" things have you experienced in Second Life?

Here are some examples:

- Things that work..sometimes

- Things that would behave..strangely

- Buildings that would rez with strange quirks

- Clothing that you'd keep purchasing, always forgetting you already owned it, and hated it

- Scripts you wrote which inexplicably..didn't work unless you poked them

- Places you'd remember, but no longer existed except maybe they did..and all the people were different, nothing seemed the same, etc.

- A place or thing that gave you an eerie foreboding

- Another Avatar / user that you sensed was somehow.."off"..

- Something that really, REALLY "creeped you out"

My sense of SL esthetics, developed in 2006, which I still secretly have a hankering for now and again.

Oh, and my whole business approach is cursed too - just found out yesterday I’ve had a recurring weekly marketplace homepage promotion fee that I forgot about, for a product that has sold exactly zero units in the time it’s been listed. That was supposed to be a single week promotion…

1. Try working for an hour on a script inside an attached object. No matter how often you save it - if your viewer crashes and you log back in, all work for that hour will be lost.

2. I have one game that will become unresponsive after a while and need a script reset. I haven't been able to figure out why yet. Maybe it's memory use is too close to it's limit.

3. Back in 2008, I noticed touch_start events become unresponsive after a while, whereas touch_end would always stay responsive. Maybe this was a glitch that has ever since been fixed by Linden Lab. But it has left me traumatized into (almost) never using touch_start, always using touch_end instead.

4. To all the cursed script writers that think that all scripts need to reset after every on_rez: it's completely unnecessary and only makes the grid more laggy. Repent now, or be doomed to dwell in the Halls of Mandos forever!

5. Most of the time, the Firestorm script editor behaves nicely with auto-indent (when you hit the return key, all tabs are copied to the next line). But sometimes, when the stars are aligned in an unfavorable position, auto-indent will fail and send your cursor back to the edge of the text window. This will always require the sacrifice of a chicken and a restart of the viewer to fix.

6. Every so often, a texture inside a haunted tree or grass decides to flip from alpha type blend/mask to alpha type none (I suspect whenever there's a blood moon):

I always felt those abandoned mainland parcels or the very little used stores you see along the roadways gave off a very cursed vibe. Bonus points if they're especially outdated with nary a mesh to be seen in half a kilometer. Something so desolate about it, I suppose. There's beautiful places on mainland, but I'd rather curate accordingly because it really does give an air of strange futility that I'm not ready to grapple with at like, 2 PM on a Tuesday or whenever.

There used to be a "cursed 4096" parcel next door to my place.

A Governance Linden cut the parcels, and set them for auction, a 2048 and a couple of 1024's a few years ago.

First owner, was some manic xxx rated blogger, who couldn't build worth a damn ( we're talking "tilting a rez box, so the whole building tilts, to match a ground slope" level of build-fail ), committed Encroachment on every single neighbour they had, including 500 sqm of encroachment on Gov Linden, every day for 3 weeks, then they rezzed animated porn pics at ground level on a public access M rated parcel, then tried opening an Adults only "satanic orgy club" in a skybox 40m off the ground with one sided walls that were see-though from the outside, before finally being driven off by Governance.

Then some clown tried buying the place from Governance for 1 ls /m, and flipping it for 12.5, before abandoning it a month later to a big land flipper who resold it at 0.6/m.

Then another fool bought it and abandoned the half of it, planning to hold an "upscale shopping event" with 52 booths, on a 2048, split between two skyboxes, then abandoning that idea when they only had 3 signups, the owner, his girlfriend, and his builder. Then they put TWO 64m x 64m x 64m skyboxes on a 64m x 32 m  parcel, and hoped the neighbours wouldn't mind, then they did the "illegal land cutting" thing to trim the 2048 into an odd sized rectangular 1024, still with the two 64m cube skyboxes, then they walked away leaving the "cursed 4096" as a sad useless collection of garbage parcels.

It remained like that for several months before finally Guy Linden happened by and decided to tidy up the mess by deleting all the parcels back into the main Gov Linden owned plot.

Thank you Guy.

It's been empty ever since.

Nope, nothing, ever. Nothing cursed.

[slowly slides the tome bound in human skin under the table]

Absolutely zero malevolent artifacts between the two of us.

I'm on my first cup of tea for the day, so I might have misread that the first time around ..

I could dwell with that chicken for a long time. That's no curse. Everything around where I live is deep fried. It gets old after a few decades.

The group for Club Noir was cursed and never worked properly in the last 4-5 years. Notices were fine but group chat was flaky and after multiple support tickets, after which it would work fine for a day or two and then fail again, Linden Lab just threw in the towel and suggested I created a new group.  Even much bigger groups I belong to were never as bad as that one.

The most creeped out I ever got was because of something someone else did and not actually SL. I got a message from an SL friend who told me that someone else had hacked my computer and had told her, she said he had told her not to tell me but she felt she had to let me know. I was skeptical but she said he had sent her a picture to prove it, and she shared it with me. It was a screen shot of my SL dashboard and I tried to figure out how someone else could get my dashboard on their computer to do a screenshot without my log on information. I realized it couldn't be done and freaked out. Then I realized that the name wasn't quite right and I realized that what had been sent to me was a photoshopped version of my Dashboard, they had just put the wrong name. used my display name instead of my user name.

Nope, nothing, ever. Nothing cursed.

If it causes the item to "misbehave", then "accidental", "meant euphemistically", or "accidentally-on purpose" all apply to my original intent!

But if it is "cursed but acts normally", then nah.

One of my own examples is a bug that crept into my favorite multi-scene "Paradise Blanket" rezzer (no longer supported, unless you count another company's product that is compatible with it).

SOMEHOW, one of the scripts started working differently over the years - the script that reads the "heights configuration notecard".

When I first got it, the "heights" selection worked fine. If you only want to rez your scenes at 60m, you put just 60m in the notecard.

Years later, it only works if you have at least two "heights" in the notecard.

Now as a scripter myself, I scratch my head and wonder, "how could llGetNotecardLine() or any code that uses it change that much?"

Since I cannot fix it (and a new rezzed copy has the same issue), I have decided it is "cursed".

So, that's one category of "cursed" objects in Second Life - something that "used to work" but just "stopped working the same" without a real reason.

The biggest curse I have experienced in all my years of Second Life is that feature called "add friend". To me (and a great many others it seems) far from adding a friend this instead adds someone that you never hear from again. 🧐

Sounds like a great way to make people "disappear"!!!

I once saw two people type exactly the same thing in local chat, and neither of them said "Jinx!" after - and the sim crashed 😬

That reminds me..recently I had seen some list of changes including "Emoji support" (including explicit "thanks" to someone who helped)..

..but..

Just the other day, I pasted an Emoji into chat with someone and the viewer locked up completely.

Cursed, I tell you!

(Granted, I don't remember what the exact published "change" was with respect to "new Emoji support"..)

What was the emoji? 🙂

There must be some case like...a man made and sold cars on SL...but his RL wife tried to stop him spending so much time online, so he went mad and chopped off her head :o Then he was sent to prison and died there, but...his cars are still on sale on MP 😬 And if you buy one, and take a pic of yourself driving it...you can see a head hovering in the passenger seat...🥶

I currently have a 'curse' of some kind when it comes to Animation Override HUDs and the Firestorm build-in AO system. Several AO HUDs I own have stopped working, as in no response from them. And the built-in AO will randomly stick on a walking animation or stop the animations on a seat or pose stand from working. Should I seek out an exorcist to remove whatever evil spirit is lurking in my computer and messing with my Second Life?
