Name change question?

I've always taken the view that, if someone's chosen a display name then that's presumably how they want to be addressed, so good manners require that I do my best to comply with their preference, which is generally an easy enough thing to do.    On the rare occasions I'm flummoxed by strange typography,  which I rarely see anyway, apart sometimes from lots of fancy curlicues and ornaments around the name, I can always ask.

If I can't easily type their name using my standard keyboard, I always just call them by their user name.  What do they expect?

Start again with a brand new name and transfer anything you can from your current inventory to your new avatar and then abandon this one. Even if all your favourite things won't transfer over, it will probably be cheaper than paying the 40USD to change your name.

no it's not theft even in the slightest, it's a service fee and it's what they charge, theft would be them coming by and stealing your computer, that's theft.

Indeed, it's more extortion (or coercive monopoly for less dramatic flair) than theft. They can charge that much because it's the only option for people who feel the need to change their name without making a new account -- other platforms usually charge around $10-15 for a name change, such as PlayStation Network (not sure how expensive it is for Xbox), Blizzard, FFXIV, etc. Compared to everywhere else, SL's cost is ridiculously high and I'd wager most SL users willing to pay that amount aren't exactly big gamers so they may not realize how ridiculous of a price it really is. $50 for a single name change?? Straight up extortion, lmao.

the work they had to do to get it back in the system, becuase of a certain CEO that forced it's removal and any supporting code so it could not be readded,  is why they charge for it and to keep people from abusing it, and we learned with display names early on, people will abuse it.
