10 months in to being on SL and regretting the name I chose at random when I joined.  I hate it.  I honestly didnt know this at the time, but apparently it's the name of a porn actress.

So if I decided to change my name, would it also change on all of my friends lists, and auto update to my new name for them, or would I have to friend them all again?, and let them know  As that could be a pain in the ass.  Same for groups, and ownership of objects, etc  Will all that change to my new name automatically?

Thanks

You don't need to "fix" anything. At worst you may notify your friends of the name change. You'll still be in their list, but probably don't know who you are. No need to update anything for Objects and whatnot.

You will need to cough up $40 for that mistake and be a Premium member.

Everything updates automatically, though it might take a day for it to work its way through all of the systems.

You might want to plan on blasting all of your friends with a quick IM telling them, so that they don't wonder who this new name is that shows on their Friends list.

Is it really $40?? 😱 That's an expensive name change. My poor bf made a typo in his so I was eventually gonna look up if name changes were possible, just never got around to it. Guess he's stuck with it now!

I'll also quietly mention that display names are a thing, and are free.

^^^^^^ This would be my recommendation. You can change your display name once a week, with no charge. 🙂 And most people will address you by your display name, so it's by far the cheaper and easier option!

I guess it sounds expensive . but just checked, and that is around 17cents (US).  So for me that is worth it.  :)

Well, I certainly didn't know "Trish Summers" was the name of a porn actress until you told me, and I think it's a perfectly fine name.

Neither did I (I am not up on any porn names actually).  But the issue is some people are, and then those that are 'assume things', and I hate it, and it causes me grief and stress.

I changed my name last year and everything happened automatically, though it can take a few hours for absolutely everything to update. But it really does update everything automatically - friends lists, groups, objects you own, even prims you've created and left out. The only thing that doesn't change is your calling card, but very few people use those.

You might want to let your friends know though - they won't get notified of your name change, it will just quietly switch over in their friends list, and they might not know who you are when they see your new name.

One small caveat is that some user-created products/systems may rely your username instead of your UUID. These won't update because they aren't tied to LL's account system, and may break until you contact the owner.

That is $40 US dollars not Linden dollars.

I don't think just changing your name will solve THAT problem. "Some people" will "assume things" simply because you have a female avatar in Second Life. You have to get very good at saying "no."  Or go around as a teddy bear, giant sea anemone, or battered cardboard box.

Or a guy. That usually fixes it.

I acquired an avatar that was just a cloud, that used to wind people up wanting me to rebake my textures as I wasn't fully rezzed.

It was fun sometimes to be anonymous, especially if I'd been somewhere that had got more than it's fair share of prim-willied jerks.

Lindal reminds me nicely there that there is a cardboard box avatar in everyone's inventory, in the library section.  It's great for stopping people in their tracks when they are talking rhubarbski about your appearance, pornstar name or whatever, and if you want to show them that you are not listening anyway.

I personally wouldn't mind more of those kinds of assumptions in my direction. . . but yeah. . . unsolicited things of that nature or in the wrong contexts is quite icky :/
