I acquired an avatar that was just a cloud, that used to wind people up wanting me to rebake my textures as I wasn't fully rezzed.

There are actually bugs you can exploit if you really want an avatar that will never exit the magic cloud phase . . . could pair really nicely with the last name 'cloud' which at the time of this posting is still available.

Why?   It's not a choice you would make, obviously, and neither would I, come to that.

However, a considerable number of people must consider it money well spent, and they presumably know best what they want to do with their own money.

I did it because I named my avi originally form an character form an obscure book than misspelled it and it an the typo drove me bonkers! totally worth it to not have people IM me all the time asking how my name is pronounced.

Yep - just found that out.  And here's me thinking it was just a few cents.  I had my 'Linden' head on. LOL.  So yes a lot pricier than I originally thought.

I don't think just changing your name will solve THAT problem. "Some people" will "assume things" simply because you have a female avatar in Second Life. You have to get very good at saying "no."  Or go around as a teddy bear, giant sea anemone, or battered cardboard box.

If that is true, that is a very sad state of affairs.  And we're veering here slightly intoto the territory of women in RL not being able to wear what they want, for fear of being harassed.  Like in RL, I think this (should be) equally not as acceptable in SL. I am hoping (perhaps naively) that by just being a woman in SL, I should not expect or accept that I am going to get harrased by men constantly because of it.

I accept that by finding out I share a porn stars name, that may have been sending out mixed messages.  But I shouldn't accept that just by being a female avatar, and not being dressed like a teenage mutant ninja turtle, that suggests I am up for being constanly sexually propostioned.  If it does, then I'm really saddened by that. 😞

Well prepare to be saddened then. SL is made up of all sorts of people from all countries. Personally I just have fun with it and have odd conversation with them till they leave me alone. It's a fun form of entertainment.

Trish Summers, never heard of her. Seems like a fine name. Searched on Google and got a bunch of random people with the same name. In fact I couldn't find anything related to an adult film star by that name. So my guess, a couple porn obsessed losers made a point of making this comment to you? Chances are people like that would find a way to make unwelcome comments no matter what name you chose. And there's always free display names.

Well, that 'last names' dabate has been going on for years, hasn't it. LL seem to have finally caved in but only when they saw a business opportunity in it. Can you blame them? From a business perspective, no. Is it a dick move? Absolutely. I've seen people call LL out on it being not fair to the "newer" users (i forget when they stopped last names and used Resident) and now that you can again you have to pay for it. I don't agree with that move, but LL is a business, so, what are you going to do really...

Sadly i'm still a member of the Resident family, but it doesn't bother me that much.

Should make it like 19.99 and if you want premie level for 3 months, 39.99 total out the door.

Actually, they'd be smart to make it free with an annual Premium Plus account.

Same for me.

I speculate that their price is higher than the price that would generate the most income. I'll bet that, if it cost $10, there would be a lot more than than four times as many takers.

Getting harassed or receiving creepy sexual messages in SL should absolutely not be acceptable - no matter what you're wearing or what your name is. If you check the thread called something like "how do people react to your avatar" you'll see that mileage may vary, some tend to get sexual IMs regularly while others don't, no matter what gender or outfit or human/furry. But it should never be something you feel the need to accept, you don't owe anyone anything. :) I wouldn't even say that your name is sending mixed messages, because it really is just a name that I'm sure people irl have as well, and they shouldn't have any expectations placed on them either simply because they share a name with a pornstar.

If it really is bothering you that much, I can understand the dissociation with it and wanting to pick a name you can better connect with. It's unfortunate that they priced the name change so high, but if it's something you really want in order to enjoy the game more, then it might be worth it. But that's your money so only you can decide if it is or isn't!

Well, I think the experience varies a lot from one person to another, and it depends on where you wander in SL.  I have been here since early 2007 and can count the number of times that I have been propositioned on the fingers of one hand.  And I just ignored the idiots and walked away then.

I've thought of changing my last name so many times (I think I picked the silliest one....)

I think it's a delightful name!

Isn't it funny how we obsess over something we think is "wrong" with us...our name, our nose, our boobs, our bank account...that almost nobody else thinks is a flaw in us?  After I picked the name "Lindal" for my SL avatar, I found out that Lindal is actually a boy's name in Scandinavia...

My friend Trout Recreant hated HIS name, after he found out that "recreant" meant "oathbreaker" instead of something like "lover of vacations". But nobody I know ever held his name against him at all.

Anyway, 40 $ is perhaps too much, right.
But it is also true that there must be a price otherwise every single troll would change its name every week so as not to be recognized. Can you imagine what a bedlam would become SL more than it already is?

I turned display names off years ago because I could never read all those weird fonts.

All viewers, I think, give you the option of seeing both display names and usernames, and several offer more granular options, such as showing the username if if it's not the same as the display name.

I've always taken the view that, if someone's chosen a display name then that's presumably how they want to be addressed, so good manners require that I do my best to comply with their preference, which is generally an easy enough thing to do.    On the rare occasions I'm flummoxed by strange typography,  which I rarely see anyway, apart sometimes from lots of fancy curlicues and ornaments around the name, I can always ask.
