I don't recall those threads but i do recollect one post that garnered about 300 replies.  The unfortunate OP was some kind of escort and hadn't upgraded her skin in roughly 5 years.  So she posted dozens of pics of herself wearing various kinds of demo skins.  Unfortunately, since she refused to alter her enormous jaggedy boobs or bizarre facial shape (think 'joker' mouth), the general concensus was that NO SKIN could ever make her look half decent and that, in fact, her demo pics were a laughable INSULT to the creators of the skins themselves.  Now THAT was an entertaining thread.  :smileyhappy:

Ironically you post a thread about people complaining they get hit on while they brag about their looks, then complain yourself and brag about your conversational skills. 

I do agree that most everyone of any sex or species gets hit on in SL at one time or another and it doesn't make anyone anything special.  One person's beauty could be another person's beast and vice versa.  Those that brag about it are probably just insecure in RL.

Actually, in 6 years in SL I have only been "hit on" in the sense of being out shopping and some random guy IMing me 2 times*.  Both were clueless noobies.  When I go to dance venues, I am often asked to dance, but I don't consider that being hit on.

A similar thread was begun years ago on the old forums and several of us reported rarely, if ever, being hit on by random guys.  One woman said, so what am I, a coat rack?  The Forum Cartel added a new tag back then and I proudly sported my "Coat Rack" tag for awhile.

I think my avatar is attractive, but I mostly wear vintage or Victorian/Medieval clothing.  Add in my profile and, as someone else said, if a guy IMs me, it's because we have similar interests. As far as complaining about being hit on, most of the guys I see around who do the "hitting" I shudder at, so count me in as someone who is most happy I rarely get hit on.

More accurately, I think people create what THEY think are good looking avatars in SL but beauty is in the eye of the beholder and all that.  I've seen avatars, both male and female, that it's pretty obvious THEY think they're "hot" but I'm having laughing fits on my side of the PC.

I’m as puzzled as Czari and Senobia by this thread, I think.  In three years I’ve been ‘hit on’ by a few dudes who spotted me online through a couple of the more dubious groups I belong to (but don’t own up to in my profile), and a misguided newbie who blundered into the Cabaret Club I hang out at and apparently mistook it for a brothel.  Pointing out to him that taking me ‘upstairs’ would only get him as far as the balcony overlooking the stage didn’t seem to deter him – and when we’d all finished laughing the owner smilingly ejected him.  So yeah.  How do some of us become Coat Racks and others the Hit Upon?  If it’s a social language thing (as others here have suggested) where some people register ‘hits’ and others never hear them as such, then I don’t feel so bad.  But if it’s because there’s an optimal setting somewhere in your sliders and a LM to the ideal location – then I reckon I want to find them! 

 

Seriously, I feel a powerpoint presentation coming on.  My curiosity is piqued, I want to know!  I’ll happily tweak my appearance, profile information and location to find out.  Squashy, Ceka, Sephina – any pointers on how to get to Hitsville?  I’m game.  And if it doesn’t work, I suppose I’ll shrug back into that vague patina of inadequacy again and look after the beautiful people’s coats…
