  3. I've cashed out lindens with my Basic account. :matte-motes-smile:
  4. In SL 7 years as of May 1 and I have approximately 8K worth of inventory (and a lot of that is awaiting my packing strategy - @OP I know you said you didn't like putting items where you can't see them, but that is what has worked for me. My all-time favorite packing items are the THinC boxes...LOVE THEM!!!!) I used to be able to keep my inventory to around 5K but I have a bunch of textures I need to either dump or put in one of my texture organizers. In my RL home I tend toward minimalism so keeping my inventory down has never been difficult for me in SL. ETA: This post was to the OP; I just tagged off Maddy's post.

I saw this thread and was also going to recommend the La Galleria blog! There's fabulous furniture and houses, and the blog also has great tutorials useful for any SL resident! : ) Looks like I'm the third person to recommend this blog/store/creator - AMAZING items. HomeStuff is a group dedicated to furniture & furnishings. This site includes a directory of designers of homes/furnishings. They also hold some fabulous hunts several times a year which is how I discover various home furnishing stores.

Direct delivery (the non-magic box method) replaced Magic Boxes for all items except limited quantity items, ie. unique items such as gachas, breedables, and items that have transfer permissions that someone might want to sell as a used item so if one never had need to sell any of these unique items before it can seem confusing. Here is a post I made that includes the specific information from LL/CommerceTeam Linden as well as the reference link.
  7. Just wanted to wave to Sling!! Good to see you! :matte-motes-smile:

  10. I am so sorry for your loss as well as the loss to the SL creative community.

MIstahMoose wrote: You proobbaaabbllly shouldn't be too big on PC as a hobby if you're working with a limited income, just my opinion. @Sassy Theres no need to remove a HD, and if you ever do plan to do so you should always back it up first. Theres cheap and even free alternatives do so (External HD, Cloud services, etc). Invaluable things shouldn't be left to the guess work of "Oh, I THINK I can install an HD correctly." Gadget????? Is that you???? Re: the response to Sassy - I refer you to my above post indicating I do subscribe to a cloud-based backup service and even then some of my files mysteriously didn't make it to the new HD.

However, I apologize to all (especially to Czari, who was physically injured by a recalcitrant power supply) for suggesting that computer upgrades are a snap. Heh - I need to go back and re-read my post when I first tried to install the graphics card (which I did an "ok" job of and then found out I needed a couple different connecters...lol). I recall the metal side of my old PC case cutting my leg because I had stupidly propped it under the counter where I was working. Ah, good times. *Grins*

It could easily be all SL creative content, software from which the installers have long since been mislaid, family photos, financial records etc. (That's without getting into discussion about personal cirumstances) I was almost going to mention the lost data but decided not to in my earlier post, but since you mentioned it *grins* - I lost some very nostalgic data. In fact, the only data I lost (as far as I can tell) were ALL my SL logs dating back to 2007. The weird thing is that I use a cloud-based data backup service. When I upgraded my PC this service restored all my files (including the SL logs) beautifully so I wasn't concerned about retrieving my data when I fried the HD. I *know* without a doubt that I made SURE those logs were ticked to be backed up and were before the HD debacle; however, they never showed up in the restore except for (and this is REALLY odd) when I was using the Windows "find" feature to locate duplicates of files (since, on the advice of the data backup service's customer service rep. I did several restores) a few of the lost files popped up out of the blue, but if I try searching on their file names, they don't show up. The data service CS and I corresponded via email over a period of several weeks with her even going into my files in their "cloud" personally to try and find the files but...no luck. The techs at the PC store said they were unable to get the files from the fried HD because when they tried to put it into another PC, the PC wouldn't boot up. I still have the HD with the hope of maybe salvaging those files in the future. Old SL logs are not like an heirloom, but I did hate to lose them.

It is really easy, everything is color coded and the right shapes for the right slot. There isn't any guess work involved and newegg has a great tutorial on it all if you wanted to watch through it. People kept telling me how easy it was to install a graphics card. This was my experience on my first try. Since I didn't have a couple of the necessary pieces, I waited six months before I got the courage to try again and that time I managed to fry my brand new HD by inserting the connector in the wrong slot, even though I was being very careful. (I was also adding a better PSU at the same time.) I ended up hauling the entire PC to a local PC shop who put it all together for me, BUT (I didn't realize until later) they installed an older model HD and really jacked up the price. Grrrrr.... I watched a TON of "How to Build Your Own PC" videos on YouTube, my favorites by Carey Holzman...and I mean I watched LOTS and LOTS of them. I'm really glad I didn't try to build my own PC based on my above two experiences just trying to install a graphics card and PSU. Well Hard drives aren't too expensive.. but I mean most larger things, Graphics cards, Ram etc.. Its literally impossible to put them in wrong. If it doesn't fit with a soft push then it doesn't go there Sorry you had an unfortunate event..It did make me giggle a bit though hehe :3 Maybe it's impossible to put some hardware in the wrong spot, but all the connectors with things daisy-chaining off of them can be downright confusing and not everyone's brain is wired (no pun intended) to sort them out.
  15. Heh....try I did. *Grins* Sassy Romano wrote: I also tried SL running via the Intel chipset the other week, I was rather surprised. At my quiet sim, there really wasn't much between the Intel and Nvidia. I was expecting a LOT more based on earlier Intel experiences. I was honestly really surprised at this as well. Sassy Romano wrote: The problem is that "it's fine for SL" from one person is totally different from the expectations of another. Some people are more than happy running around on low graphics settings or they live their SL on a quiet build platform and thus have no problem with weaker graphics solutions. I'd say that it's really something that you'd have to find a way to try and the other problem is that the graphics benchmarks usually tend to be for DirectX whereas SL uses OpenGL and the results are somewhat different. Totally agree with you. The only reason I posted my experience with integrated graphics was in response to Maddy's post asking for input on the issue, but I do agree it can be very individualistic. I've gotten so used to mid-level graphics that even high (unless I'm taking photos in specific places) just doesn't "look right" in places I go to regularly.

  17. Madelaine McMasters wrote: We get a lot of questions like this over in Answers. It would be helpful to hear from people using Intel PCs with integrated graphics from the HD3/4/5000 series, so we can give more informed answers. We routinely say that integrated graphics just won't make the grade for SL, but I think I read of someone who's been happily wandering SL on an Intel laptop with HD4000 graphics. So, if anyone out there is using such a machine, I'd love to hear how well it's working. How's the frame rate? Are you able to run advanced lighthing? Stuff like that. Anyone? Prior to adding a graphics card I ran my desktop (wired directly to the modem) with the integrated 4000 intel graphics. I have an i5-3570K Ivy Bridge processor, 8 GB RAM, and an MSI Z77A-G45 motherboard. I was extremely pleased with the performance. I did frame rate tests when I first got it and now can't recall the exact numbers but they were decent (better than the 5 fps I was getting with my old PC...lol). I could run high graphics with basic shaders and I *think* Atmospheric Shaders but I personally didn't like those for some reason and still don't use them with my graphics card. The only thing I really couldn't do was Ultra-Graphics. The main two differences I saw when I added the graphics card were improved frame rates to the point where I can go to very crowded venues and really not lag plus the ability to use Ultra-Graphics, which I still don't like.
  18. CmpZ wrote: For any of you old-timers: I've read about camping for L$. Do people still do that? To follow up on Syo's post - when camping was around back in the day, as mentioned it was a method for a merchant/business-sim owner to increase his venue's traffic number (ie. the number of people in a given locale for a period of time) which boosted the venue's placement when people used in world search to find places; the more traffic (which was just one measurement, iirc, that figured into placement, but a key one) the higher in search the venue rated and the easier to find in search. Quite a few years ago camping to increase traffic numbers was given the axe by LL, along with bots some business owners used to place on their parcels for the same reason. There are still a few camping places in SL (at least one of which I'm aware), but it has to be in a sectioned off piece of the parcel so that it does not influence traffic numbers, therefore the business owner offering camping is basically giving back to the community. I even ran into a money tree the other day. Now there's something I haven't seen in awhile. Going to money trees used to be one of the standard pieces of advice to new residents who were looking to get some lindens to spend back when I first joined SL.

NOT (all caps fixing this means Linden Labs loses another possibility. So it's either a no brainer or no brains IMHO. <script charset="UTF-8" type="application/javascript" src="chrome://hdv/content/hdv.js"></script> Merchants would love to see a LOT of things fixed pertinent to the MP; come check out some of the posts over there and you'll see a lot of gnashing of teeth over very simple things that could easily be corrected, according to people who have posted who understand coding, but have remained untouched for years. Trust me, many merchants are as aggravated about a lot of things as you are.
  20. Nad Gough wrote: Personally I will not (that should be NOT) even consider a vendor who junks up the marketplace with this kindsa stuff - one entry for each color etc. Many merchants have been asking (begging) LL for the option of being able to list multiple colors of an item (a blouse, for example) in one MP listing for YEARS...at least since 2008 going back to the old forums where a very lengthy thread existed on the subject of SL marketing, so this is largely a situation that is built into the MP software and not merchants deliberately trying to "junk up the marketplace." While there are some merchants who do contribute to the MP search mess, it is largely due to the misuse of keywords. @Teagan, I'm not sure if a demo could be included with the item listing for the same reason that multiple colors cannot be in one listing. That would be the logical place for a demo and I would love that feature as well. edit: clarification
  21. MIstahMoose wrote: I love telling people the technical side of everything, but it could also scare consumers? I suppose giving my items to fashon bloggers would gain the consumers, and people who are interested would read the blog I run I do most of my shopping on the MP these days and I've seen items that need technical instructions include .pdf files and/or links to videos to help customers. I really like both of those ideas. I rarely read blogs.

Possible??? Second: If a third party is involved, can we find out who they are and complain directly to them? I have no idea on either point, Teagan. I was surprised when I first read it months ago because I was still under the impression that we had volunteer moderators the same as on the old forums. I would honestly like to know as well; now I can't recall who provided the info about the moderators being from a third party. Also, isn't the forum software now provided by a third party? Perhaps the moderators are employees of that company.
  23. Bree Giffen wrote: The residents are inventing new ways to modify and clothe our avatars but they're also layering on the complexity and making the whole process of getting dressed a less fun. Which is pretty much why I stick to system clothing (and as someone mentioned, either in this thread or another one, there truly are creators who can make system clothing works of art - I am fortunate to own some). I do have clothing with sculptie attachments but I don't find them overall too much trouble to tweak. As for the add-on feet, hands, etc. - bleh.
  24. Pussycat Catnap wrote: Yes the camera controls are clunky compared to ANY OTHER 3D environment. And users here who have never played other MMOs don't get it with regards to how strange and bizarre SL's system is compared to industry norms for a 3D UI. - So when you raise this concern, you get them attacking you with 'this isn't an MMO' because they lack perspective... The ALT tricks don't really cut it... but they're better than nothing, sometimes... Agree with you on this point. The main complaint I've had with SL over the years is no real first person view. Everquest didn't have that for quite awhile, the choices were overhead view (I suppose good in some instances such as large raids, etc.) or the "looking over the shoulder" view (second person, I think?) Finally EQ added a first person view where one does not see their avatar but just what is in front of their eyes, like real life. AND EQ added a function key method to quickly cycle between these three views. I LOVED that. The closest thing to first person view in SL is mouse view but that really isn't the same thing and I personally find it clumsy to use.
  25. Syo Emerald wrote: Hoppimike wrote: Thanks for the help with the camera, Uncommon Truth. I think the clothing thing is by far my biggest problem, I find it spoils the immersion a little because I can't just put on and take off clothing as easily as real life, it's like everything grrrriiiiinds to a halt the second I try to do it lol I know I'm new. I just think it should be easier than this is all, for newbies and for everyone I think it would help the "game" to be more popular in future. This here proves what I said in another thread. People who come to SL with the idea of it being a game, expect it to function in the same way a game does. The way an environment functions when its designed by the same bunch of specialized, paid and experianced staff. Second Life is entirely different and even if LL wanted, they don't have 100% influence on what you describe here, because a bunch of disorganized, independend peoples makes everything in SL....the users create the clothes, not some group of game designers. You get get perfect clothes and restrict the freedom, or you get non-perfect clothes but every freedom you want. And "more popular"...who do you think would join Second Life? - Most gamers are bored with it, because they miss what a true game has to offer. - Facebook-Fans want RL, not an immersive virtual world, where people like to keep their RL private. SL was never a product for the mainstream market. I have to agree with you, Syo. Also, since the OP is comparing more natural avatar movement to games like WoW, having played both EQ & WoW, the avatars have VERY limited movement compared to SL, EQ moreso than WoW but an avatar cannot sit or lay in a gazillion different positions, never mind all the complicated dance movements and inter-avatar interaction.
