Reminds me of the time I was looking around a large fashion store owned by a male resident who clearly thought he was God's gift to women in terms of supplying their fashion needs. He thrived on female avatars telling him in group chat how wonderful his clothes were
(I suspect most were female alts of his)
. Anyway, seeing nothing that took my fancy, I was heading towards the exit when he sent me an IM asking why I was leaving without buying something, and could I not find something I liked? I replied politely saying no, I didn't see anything I wanted today, maybe another time, whereupon he had another go at me over not even taking the outfit from his free group gift vendor and what was wrong with it. By this time I'd had enough of this arrogant clown so just muted him and left the store and group.

oooo - cynical lol

But I think you were right because everyone knows that I am God's gift to women as far as fashion is concerned, simply because I've completely steered clear of that market :)

ETA: I must admit that in my early days as a store owner, I used to watch people in the store, thinking,"Buy something!" I reminded myself of 2 TV characters in UK sitcoms. One was Auntie Wainright in Last Of The Summer Wine, and the other was Arkwright in Open All Hours. They both had the attitude that is a sin for someone to go into their shop and leave without buying anything :)

How do I know when someone is hitting on me rather than just flirting or being polite or friendly? It has to be pretty blatant for me to consider it hitting on me. It happens very rarely. Hmmm, twice in the last 4 years. My usual response was to be either very polite, very crude, or ask if it's a school holiday and do Mommy and Daddy know he is using the computer to troll for cartoon sex. Regarding the second option, the worst wrong window moment of my SL happened when I was telling someone off that way, saying nah, you wouldn't want me, I get too attached and am prone to stalking, how could you explain to your RL wife the naked woman on the driveway playing with herself? I said that in open chat, while hosting a charity fundraiser LOL.

Lucy's Top 5 Indicators She is Being Hit On:

1. COME TO ME, B**TCH

2. Oh you are so beautiful, I am in love with you! Sex?

3. Wow, nice rear view babe, it would look nicer if my **** were right there

4. You know that your nipple is showing through your shirt? Makes me just wanna bite it. YEE HAWWW

and the CLASSIC, iconic ...

 5. Nice shoes, wanna f**k?

Regarding the last on the list, I could never tell if they were trying to be funny or not until they said more after that.

I was followed around by a charming guy one time who said things like "Oh Sephina you would love so beautiful in this." "Oh you are so radiant this dress would look so lovely on you". After a while pieced it together and asked, "Are you the owner of this store?" Silence followed for about 5 minutes and then finally a yes.

Men do not care what a female looks like. Even in real life, someone as horrid as say Roseanne Barr would have a fair pick. Probably nearly as much as any supermodel. Sure men would prefer a "looker" but they take anything they can get.

thing is it is not just SL. In SL of course there is a visual, the avatar, for men to imagine that is what the RL person looks like. Sure they know the RL user is not pretty but they can dream .

but what about other sites?

I am on some language learning site and I sometimes get in the French chat room or maybe ENG/FRE one and at least a few times I have had men ask me to marry them. No photo, just a made up name and the "female" gender marker. Usually men from the middle east.

Men merely see the word "female" or a synonym of it and are ready to drop their pants or propose marriage. It is pathetic.

Irish         blonde...

An         attractive blonde from Cork, Ireland, arrived
at the casino. She         seemed a little intoxicated and bet twenty thousand dollars in a single         roll of the dice.

She said, "I hope you don't mind, but I feel         much
luckier when I'm completely nude." with that, she stripped from         the neck down, rolled the dice and with an Irish brogue yelled, "Come         on, baby, Mama needs new clothes!"

As the dice came to a stop,         she jumped up and down
and squealed. "Yes! Yes! I won, I won!" She         hugged each of the dealers, picked up her winnings and her clothes and         quickly departed.

The dealers stared at each other dumbfounded.
Finally, one of them asked, "What did she roll?" The other answered,         "I don't know - I thought you were watching."

MORAL OF THE STORY

Not all Irish are drunks, not all blondes are dumb,
but all         men... are men!

During my years on IRC (text-only chat), my /whois was "The Royal Russian Redhead" - which was a moniker  with which I was dubbed early on in the first social channel of which I was a member.  I've always used the name "Czari" everywhere I can online except for places that say "That name is already taken."  Imposters!  But I digress...

It was amazing how many IMs I received from total male strangers who used the search term "redhead."  I would agree with the part that getting hit on doesn't necessarily involve an avatar.

Edit: Clarification
