I’m happy to announce some very exciting news today: Rod Humble is Linden Lab’s new CEO. Our press release is here. You’ll hear from Rod himself after he starts in mid-January, but in the meantime, we wanted to share a brief introduction.

Rod has an impressive depth of experience in developing and leading fun, immersive entertainment experiences that have been great successes. As a 20-year veteran of game development, he’s worked on more than 200 games, and last year, the gaming magazine Edge named him #2 on their annual list of Hot 100 Game Developers. Rod is coming to Linden Lab from Electronic Arts, where he was Executive Vice President and led EA Play, including the best-selling PC game franchise of all time, The Sims. Prior to EA, he was a VP of Product Development at Sony Online Entertainment, where he led the EverQuest Studio.

Rod has a deep appreciation for what makes Second Life special. He’s already been exploring and experimenting inworld to familiarize himself with the pluses and minuses of our product and the successes and challenges faced by our Residents. He’ll officially start at the Lab in mid-January, and I’m excited for us to begin 2011 with fresh perspective, renewed energy, and creativity.

To give you a sense for Rod’s creativity, personality, and perspective, here are few links to his personal creations and a couple of press interviews he’s given:

My post was mostly intended for the other people reading this post, and also to show that the anti-mesh sentiment isn't the only viewpoint out there. ;p

Phoenix's new viewer project's gonna handle that complaint.

That brings up an excellent point.  At one time I had shortcuts for 4+ different viewers and a dozen SL related programs on my desktop.  I woke up one morning and realized that SL was taking up too much space...in many ways.  The multi viewers confused and turned off a lot of ppl.  Then came drama from the emerald viewer team/LL.  Then came secuity issues yet again.

Viewer 2 is for the casual gamer not the builder.  Unfortunatly what always drew me to SL was the ability to create;  meaning; being forced to use Viewer 2 in any way is a show stopper.  I haven't created or even logged into SL in Months;  nor do I have any interest in doing so until there are clear signs that LL is not in fact a sinking ship.  I see one bad decision after another these days and clearly no further rights to my own creations.  Why would I support LL.

JayR.......I whoheheartedly agree with that suggestion. SL has been a mess ever since LL pushed out Viewer 2. The residents are not cohesive anymore. We used to all be on the same page and now we are not. It's totally frustrating; especially when trying to help new residents.

Welcome Rod; I hope your time with us will be enjoyable, stimulating and I hope that we can look forward to some stability that went out the window with Viewer 2.

Welcome Rod.

Sounds great to have a man like you now to SL. The Sims brought me to SL => lol I´d first thought that SL would be an equal (but online) version like The Sims, even then with all the fun of building plus meeting "real people" that are also crazy in building like me.

Well, but then it was "a little" different ;-) - no free land, no objects that are ready to use except horrible freebies ^^ - hahaha. My first own house looks funny now but  did it and was proud...

I think no one better could take a CEO place in Second Life

Be welcome and "Good Luck" - a great new experience !

LOL SOE VP hmmm, Not very impressed with that on the resume concidering they ruined one of the all time greatest games that they had. Well, I hope he does better with SL than he did with SWG. You really need to research the history of the games that they have ran before hiring these people.

Welcome Rob!

I trust you have met many challenges in the past (almost) 3 years in your position. I'm a newbie SLifer... little more than 30 days... and challenges have been many!!

I would like to comment on the 'virtual currency' issue which I understand that Linden Labs is experiencing. My sugguestion is just to contact a RL investment bank and let them advise. I'd have to guess most would be more than welcome to assist in the matter, and I hope there would be a solution identified that could offer 'break-even' conditions on Linden's part.

Please pardon me should I be over-stepping an AVI's routine, and I do not doubt that Linden Labs has already addessed this matter in appropriate ways. I'm withholding any suggestion of RL organizations in that I feel it's inappropiate for presentation within this forum.

Good Luck!!
