for the whole 50 linden?...sorry but think that's a bit to much to expect. Premium skins and shapes are closer to 1000 or more, than 50 linden.

This doesnt mean you have to look bad in free skin and shape, many people around have found free ones and look great. Make some efford and go hop around hunts, creators groups and i am sure you will find the things.

For real premium outfits you have to pay, more than you can spend now, so  don't try and get disapointed. Just be carefull when you buy very goodlooking skins for a penny, there is a chance it's copybotted and you will most likely sooner or later find it replaced with a standard skin by LL for violating copyrights.... tp around a lot... it's worth it

Howdy..

If you're under 30 or 60 days old, I would suggest checking out the Fab Free website. http://fabfree.wordpress.com/

They used to have, although I didn't see it when I last looked, a list of places where you can get free avatars. They also list the hunts and other things where you can find the items that you need.

Good luck.

It can be done, but you'll have to put in a lot of work hunting down quality freebies/dollarbies. I'm not promising premium skins, mesh feet and a wardrobe for every occasion, but you can make a good-looking av for next to nothing.

Check out the Lionheart Freebie Store They have one of the few decent, free, avs-in-a-box, made by *By Snow*. It's rough around the edges, but it gives you a place to start. In the box is a LM to the By Snow mainstore. They have free, moddable shapes and usually some free & dollarbie eyes.

Visit Tuty's for a free AO. Learn how it works and you can personalise it with any free poses you might find on your travels.

Visit Free Dove and see what they have to offer.

Really, really, do follow Tex's advice and look on Fab Free. It doesn't matter how old your account is, there are offers out there for everyone. Fab Free picks some of the best and puts the info all in one place. Be prepared to visit a lot of shops and join a lot of store update groups.

Look at other people. See something you like? Right-click and INSPECT it to see where it came from (or ask the wearer). Maybe the store has some nice freebies or lucky chairs.

You're going to need to join some groups and do some poking around. A lot of smaller skin makers have freebie skins which are usually just a skin and brows. You can make your own shape for nothing. This goes for clothing and hair too. Just keep searching until you find what you want. But loads of designers offer free group gifts.

This can be done only with a lot of effort on your part tracking down freebies and dollarbies. You are going to have a limited selection and probably won't look like you want to as a result. You probably aren't gong to look "smart like others" for a while either because those people probably spent a lot more than you are willing to on their avatars or spent months tracking down things.

Lindens are cheap when you buy them with RL money though.   Skip buying coffee, a beer, a movie or other things you buy that you don't have to have once in a while.  Take an odd or part time job for a two or three hours a week.  The time you spend on that will be far less the the time you are going to have to spend tracking down free stuff to achieve a 'smart like the others' look.  You can get enough together for a great avatar, wardrobe and modest home and lead the good life in SL if you prioritize a bit in RL. Many people do.

Not sure if you are looking for male or female but here are some suggestions if you do not have alot of lindens:

To start, head on over to the Free Dove. They have some free modifiable shapes (male & female) that are very good. You can also check out the skins and see if you like them. They also have many other items for your avatar.

Also, go on marketplace and search for Delish (they have very nice female shapes and skins for about 10L or less). You can also do a search for male shapes & skins in your price range on marketplace.

Check out Rockberry (female skins). They have a whole bunch of lucky boards and within 10-15 minutes you can pick up a good skin for free (find the boards & keep an eye out to wait for the first letter of your name. Then click the board). The owner of Rockberry is very nice and it's great that this is offered. Freebie Street has some decent starter males skins (you will see a bunch of boxes at the edge of the street).

Vista animations has basic AO for male & female for 1L. you can find Vista on Marketplace and inworld.

Hope this helps to get you started :matte-motes-big-grin:

A very good point, I assumed the OP was male but it's hard to tell. An unisex name. Shows how easy it is to "fill in the lines" when the post does not provide much information.

But female free avatars is so easy to find, it's hardly a challenge.  ;) To find a specific style, that is much harder. I showed a typical male style that one would not think of as  "free lousy stuff". Or at least I don't think so. Much mesh, good eyes, good skin. It is some other free skins out there, but they have war paint or facial tattoos. This one is good unless you hate the facial hair.

I just looked at your post and I referred it to a friend of mine who is male and is always looking for good free items and bargains. You definilty made great suggestions and organized them very well. He especially liked the hair.

Let me think how I'd approach this knowing what I know currently.

1. Check the marketplace. https://marketplace.secondlife.com/ and search for 'free skin' or go to the /skin subdirectory and choose the $0-$10 range. I'm guessing there will be demos. Many.. many.. demos. Maybe search for 'group gift skin' or 'special skin' as well.

2. Look at marketplace again. Find really nice skins that I actually like regardless of the cost. Go to that skin store's inworld location and look for any newbie specials, freebies, gift boxes, lucky chair, etc. I would look for any signs that say you can get free gifts if you join the store's group. Then I'd join the group. Repeat whole process with all other skin stores that I like.

3. For the shape, I would just make one. Then tweak it. I constantly tweak shapes.

4. For hair... do the same process as skins.

5. For clothes... same process.

6. For animation overrider (AO)... I actually found a nice free AO so I'd just go search for free AOs. Go to all the big animation stores and see if they have any free AOs. I know one of them does.

And that's how I'd do it. While you are going around SL, be sure to bookmark every place and sort the bookmarks in your inventory folder.

Freebies come with lots of junk included so don't be afraid to pick the one nice free item out and trash the rest or your inventory will become bloated.

There is some really wonderful advice on this thread, and some terrifically useful links that I wish I'd had.

I entirely understand the desire for a fast, cheap, and easy solution. It is entirely possible be interested in SL in ways that have nothing to do with how your avatar looks, one might be an art lover, for instance, less interested in socializing than in visiting installations.

I have friends in here -- mostly educators, who it must be said, tend not to care much about appearance in RL either -- who have been in-world for ever, and still look vaguely like noobs. They just don't care.

Unfortunately, if one goes about much in SL, one soons finds that appearances do matter, quite a bit, and looking like a noob can impact on how one is treated. So even if one doesn't particularly care about one's own appearance, it is generally a good idea to at least show that some effort has been made to fit in.

When I started, I took the freebie route, using resources like FabFree (which is indeed a fab resource). The results were entirely acceptable: there is some very nice clothing available through group gifts, for instance. But it's also a great deal of work.

Fortunately, I enjoy bargain shopping, but not everyone does, so I can understand the appeal of the "let me buy a complete avatar and get it over with" thing.

Garyll, your link is broken, which is too bad: I'd have loved to see what you made with this!

I might just add, in a more practical vein, that Coco has put all non-mesh items out for free. It's all (I think) very high-quality stuff, particularly (as I've mentioned in another thread) the footwear.

Thank you. :)

Incidentally i use the Tuty's AO but there's another very nice freebie AO by Oracul at White Tiger Island (for men and women).

Does anyone know of other stores offering free or group gift mens hair? I like long but I'd also like something shorter as well.

The key to free/cheap stuff as a male avatar is vigilance - eternal vigilance!

The really good-looking stuff doesn't come up that often, but when it does you have to pounce on it.  Eventually you'll build up enough of a collection to build multiple outfits/looks.  This thread is a great example, as it pointed out a few things I otherwise would've missed.

The last few years have been difficult for me financially, and I know in the economic circumstances we've had the last 4 or 5 years I'm not alone.  Putting money into SL is a luxury I can't always justify, and I'm always appreciative of the content creators who are willing to give quality stuff away for free (or almost free).  Those are the people I return to when I finally do have a little money I can justify spending.

The hair is "Naomi" from D!va http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/CalanDiva/131/154/24

Skin, group gift from Filthy http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/CalanDiva/131/154/24

Shape "Athletic" from Penny Patton's "Vitruvian" pack. Full perm shapes designed to have correct human proportions and realistic sizes. https://marketplace.secondlife.com/p/Vitruvian-Shapes-Full-Perm-Set-122/4426725 I edited the features to better fit the skins, and then a couple more tweaks to fit in the dress. One could also get the Standard Mesh Sizing pack and work from that, although the proportions aren't as good (SL stork-leg syndrome).

Eyes "Fresh" freebie from *By Snow* http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Lionheart%20Nuka/82/238/28

Casual outfit from the Lionheart freebie centre http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife//108/126/16 I can't find a store for the creator Comfy Chic.

Boots from COCO Designs. http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/COCO%20DESIGNS/107/209/22 It turns out these are no longer available, but two other pairs of mesh casual boots are still up as group freebies.

Pink dress "Chantal" from KL Couture http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/KL%20Couture/197/181/23

Shoes from AKO https://marketplace.secondlife.com/p/AKO-Pumps-gift-pink-jeans/5695682 not the best I've seen, but I need a quick, free match for the dress.
