  1. Instead of 'getting old' I prefer to think of it as being like fine wine. I am developing better taste.
  2. Hippie you may very well get to space in your lifetime. Richard Branson just opened a space port this week for Virgin Galactic in New Mexico. He says they will be launching the first ship next year! You can even buy a ticket now! They have sold 430 so far. You may not be able to afford one right now, but like everything else the price will come down as the technology improves. Here's a RL very short story with a happy ending: Never say never. I remember reading Snow Crash as a teen and thinking how great it would be to be able to be in a virtual world. I thought it was just a dream that may become reality in the far far future. I never expected to actually experience one. Now look at me. Not only am I in one every day, I work in one.
  3. What you want is a holovendor. You can put various products in them and the customer can use arrow buttons to see them, Then they pay the vendor and receive the merchandise once they make a selection. If you search for holovendors in the marketplace you will find them in a wide variety of price ranges depending on other features and if they network. A network would allow you to have vendors in multiple locations on various sims and a server in a single location. When you want to update or ad a product you do it at the server and it will update all the vendors.
  4. While nice, the offer isn't as generous as it may appear at first. WIth the economy the way it is, and so many people losing sims because they can not afford the tier any longer, you can get a full sim on the secondary market for FAR less than LL charges for a brand new one - sometimes the price only covers the relatively modest transfer fee which the seller then pays LL. I doubt Homestead's .will ever be available to persons that do not own a full sim. This would put a huge dent in the profitablity of the land barons who own huge estates and rent homesteads. LL has always favored the land barons over the general population. Also the present setup is much more lucrative to LL. If a renter leaves a homestead, the land baron generally pays the tier by re-renting the sim and/or from their other income or sells the homestead to another land baron and LL sees no disruption of their income. If homesteads were avaiable without a full sim there would be many people who buy one only to abandon it a few months down the road because they can't afford it and disrupt the income flow to LL.
  5. No, LL doesn't need to be stricter as all the tools someone needs to deal with a bully are already in place. Firstly, I have all the sympathy in the world for anyone that is abused by anyone else in RL, SL or in any way shape or form. I also feel that a lot more could be done to stop TRUE bullying in RL. BUT.... after looking at your profile and blog I wouldn't be at all surprised if the whole thing weren't cooked up cheap drama for publicity and infamy by using a RL serious issue to pull on the heartstings of potential supporters. You have also violated TOS by revealing private information in your blog about others as well as private conversations that you had no right to reveal without permission and apparently have done the same in world too. It's all too ironic considering you own profile pic about revealing private information or chat logs without permission! Don't know and don't care about who started all this or if the other party has done anything wrong. But you are as guilty of being a bully here as you are alleging the other person to be. Want to stop this if this is really the harrasment you claim? Simple enough. Ignore and mute the other person. Ban from any land you own and remove all that stuff you wrote about the subject anywhere you posted it. Move on in your SL and quit trying to perpetuate this by putting up posts about it everywhere.
  6. You may not sell real life goods or services on the SL Marketplace web site. You may, however, sell what you wish in world provided it is a legal product or service within whatever restrictions stated by formal rules or social custom. Formal rules would include Terms of Service, estate covenants, venue rules, group charters etc.. To be safe and professional, always obtain the permission of the land, venue, or group owner to sell in these places by giving out information, posting notices or saying things in public or group chat or private IM (which is considered spam). You may rent or purchase space from which to sell them from a shop, office, or ad board etc.- provided it is allowed on the sim where your space is located. Generally that would be a commercial sim or venue. You may start your own group and ask interested people to join the group and sell that way. You may take ads out in SL publications or media such as radio or TV. You may have private conversations with other people about your product or service if they wish to talk to you about it. Keep in mind that people are in SL for fun or for their own purposes and most of people do not want to be solicited with real life offers. If you approach people, move on if they show no interest in speaking about it with you. You may wish to consider hiring a company that specializes in helping RL businesses in SL to guide you or help you promote your business so that you can avoid mistakes. Look in search for 'solution providers' for this type of assistance. Solution providers may be 'full service' and provide everything you need including, helping you find land, building a building, hiring or training RL or SL staff, etc, or may specialize in one area such as marketing. Solution providers must apply for this designation from LL and meet certain requirements to obtain the designation. There is even an island called SLExpo where these firms have booths you can go visit to obtain information about them in one convenient location. Be professional in representing your business and products and you may be successful. Break formal rules and / or social customs and you may find yourself personally muted by people or banned from areas and the reputation of your business damaged.
  7. This isn't necessary at all. The radiating dots above heads and the active speaker list is sufficient to identify a speaker Besides, what if there are two or more conversations going on in a venue? Which talker would be displayed.? I am afraid this could possibly add to lag too on the client side, as constantly changing whose name tag is displayed just adds to the processing time. There aer a lot more pressing problems that need attention.
  8. It entirely depends on what, if any license or agreement was in place. If they didn't have anything that is legally enforceable, and the one person gave them items full perm, there may not be much they can do about it and I doubt the Lindens will either. However if there was a legally enforceable agreement or license, and this violates specific terms of it, then they can file a DMCA notice with LL and take it to RL court. Never enter into a business arrangement with anyone, no matter how much you trust them, or give items to anyone full perm unless you also give a very specific license outlining exactly what the terms were. Otherwise you may end up in a situation such as this. Unfortunately giving something full perm to anyone without a legal license spelling out specifically what can be done with it means that the new owner can pretty much do what they want with it. The burden of proof that this is not true falls on the creator. All proofs must be rock solid too or the request will be denied. Here is a link concerning the DMCA and what LL will do and not do and how to file a DMCA notice: DMCA: Digital Millennium Copyright Act
  9. I want to add my voice to the others here and say that ban/mute/AR is the most effective way of dealing with this type of situation. Griefers are bullies that do what they do for attention. If you don't give it to them , they go away. While I have not had but a few times I've been harassed this way in the five years plus I've been in SL, I can tell you that this DOES work because this is how I handled it. If they have made threats against your RL, or you have reason to believe they may threaten your RL, you can report this to the FBI and your local police too. Google FBI - cyber crime for a link to a web site where you can file the report. I did have a business rival try this with me once, mainly because he does it with others and they cave in to his demands not to compete with him. I didn't. I told him to bring it if he wanted a long vacation courtesy of the state. Just the fact that I stood up to him and made it clear I would report it to RL authorities was enough to make him stop. DO NOT under any circumstances let them run you out of SL. This makes them think they have 'won' and will only encourage them to harass others or even track you down if you use an alt and repeat the process.
  10. Sometimes the delivery boxes the item is packed in are named differently that the item in the listing. Go to your transaction history on the web and see what the exact name of the item you purchased was and copy and paste it into search. If you still don't see it, clear your cache and relog. This will reload your inventory and many times the items will show up. If it still doesn't, then copy and paste the order information from your transaction history as proof of payment onto a notecard and send it to the merchant with a note that you did not receive it and ask them to send another as mentioned in previous answers.
  11. When I first came to SL and created my avatar I was slightly taller than the average woman. That was OK though because I am in RL too. Over the years though avatars have grown and now, having not changed my shape, I am a shrimp compared to a lot of women. You can also see this in furniture. Furniture that was made in the early days of SL is smaller than furniture made today. This is due to the furniture makers making their products to fit today's avatars I have a theory about why this has happened. Men seem to have been the first to have gotten taller and larger over the years I suspect that a lot of men come to SL and want to look imposing so move those sliders up to the max they can. Other men follow suit because they don't want to be perceived as short. Then when the women dance with these men or use other standing animations they are floating a foot or two off the floor, so they adjusted their height too.
  12. If you go to your web profile and click edit, then the privacy tab, it gives you the option to allow only people on your friends list to view real life information. However, I am not sure that what you set here applies to the in world profiles that people who use phoenix, singularity or other viewers with a V1 based user interface profile. I believe that they will still be able to see it in world but not on the web. Also note that the info is available to anyone on your friends list. So if you are concerned about your privacy then you should be careful and only put people on your friends list who are actual friends and not just acquaintances.
  13. Actually technically, they can copy it but it is not something that is undertaken lightly, is rare and may not even be offered to the average customer. Shoul they agree to do it, to have it reproduced you must own all objects AND be the creator of all objects, textures, scripts, animations etc used in the creation OR have written permission from all copyright holders of these items specific to you and your situation. It is your responsibility to track all this down and obtain all needed permissions. The permission must be submitted in real life in writing in a legally acceptable form as advised by the Lindens. The Lindens WILL vet all content and verify all permissions from the copyright holders. It is a time consuming process that you will be charged for and won't be cheap by any means. You may also have to pay or compensate the copyright owner for their permission, if any items to be moved do not already have copy permission or just for their time and any expense in having the permission drawn up in proper form and sent. In short, unless you have deep pockets and a lot of time, its probably not worth your time pursuing this. By the time you did all this and paid all the fees etc, you are probably better off just buying your sim and anything you need to set it up to your liking or even hiring someone to do this for you. You should also be cautious of setting up your new sim exactly like the rental. If you copy a sims layout, landscaping, buildings and other things that may in and of itself be a copyright violation of the sims design.
  14. Pamela Galli wrote: There is a thing some merchants use and advertise in their listings (which have tons of reviews) -- I won't say the name of the thing, but if you review something on the MP you can go to the store and get a partial refund from a kiosk. That is not against terms of service as long as the reward is given for ANY rating. Reference Writing item reviews on Marketplace Policies and Guidelines "Reviews should not be written for pay, or for other rewards or compensation unless both positive and negative reviews are rewarded." If you know that a merchant only gives rewards only for good ratings, that is illegal and the merchant should be reported.
  15. I do not base all my buying decisions on ratings. I know the game that can be played with them. I know that lots of things sell well and customers are happy but do not rate. My use of ratings in evaluating products is a small factor in my overall descion. I buy based on my own evaluation of the products quality and suitablility of purpose. The only time ratings really come into play is if I have narrowed my choice down to a couple products and am having a hard time deciding between them. However, I feel i use them intelligently and with knowledge of all the drawbacks. I have explained my thought processes in my previous post and won't go into it again here. Again, I agree the system needs reform but do not want to see it eliminated.
  16. First, I am not naive and know that ratings can be gamed. Even so just because they can be gamed doesn't mean that all are. Secondly, as stated I do not pay so much attention to INDIVIDUAL ratings as the TREND, which in my experience has been helpful as a guide. I just don' look at the individual rating but I look at the breakdown. If the majority of ratings are high, with only a couple low ratings I give less weight to the low ratings and they probably will not effect my decision at all. I know that some people are just overly picky and hard to please. Some may be competitors, friends of or alts of. In your example, I would not give much weight to the 3 one star ratings. If you had mostly all high ratings, and another product did too, I would choose the product that appealed to ME most which may well be your product. The fact that one had 26 out of 29 and the other maybe 88 out of 100 is not all that relevant. As to why one has so many more than than yours, there could be a number of reasons. You can't rate on the spot. You have to receive and look at the merchandise first. Not everyone rates and I don't all the time either. I will if I think its an outstanding product OR the quality is so low others should be warned, So, maybe it was luck of the draw. Another reason may be that the other creator actively seeks ratings. Frequently I purchase something and when it is opened I get a notecard asking me to rate an item. If they care enough to put that in the package they probably care what customers think and use the information to improve their products, so I'll go back and rate the item. Under the new marketplace merchants can see who gave what rating, it is no longer anonymous. If you rate an item and only choose a star level and don't fill in the comment area, it won't take your rating. If you rate an item good or bad the merchant can see your name now. If a product has a lot of ratings but no comments I know they are older ratings. Since a few low ratings under the old system have no comment to go with them I give them even less weight than I would if a comment was appended and it was a valid opinion. But again, its the overall trend that counts. Whenever I give a low rating its due to my disappointment over the quality or I felt that the picture or description of the product was misleading or factually wrong, resulting in a purchase I would not have made otherwise. There have been a few times when the merchant has contacted me about my low rating. If they just want to argue my opinion with subjective opinions of their own, they get no where. But if they take the time to set things right to my satisfaction or factually explain why I may be incorrect in my assumptions, I will go back and revise the low rating with a note as to why i am revising it. I am a content creator myself of just about anything. Although most of my work is custom work, I do have a few items on the marketplace. I take the time once in a while to look at my ratings. Its simple enough, I look at my store and sort by rating. If I ever get a low one and the customers name (so far I have not), I would contact that customer and set things right with them as best I could. If a product got a lot of lower ratings, I'd also remove it from the marketplace and revamp it. I look at the comments for other ratings and use the information to improve product offerings. In summary, while I agree the system is not perfect and needs reform, I still don't think it should be eliminated. I find the system helpful both as a consumer and a merchant when used in an intelligent manner .
  17. Not paid means that you didn't get paid for it. The reason its saying that is that you may have noticed that even freebies show up in your transaction history as transactions as something of value is given. Not paid means it won't show up there as transferred to the customer because the delivery failed. At this point you can contact the customer and see if they still want the product and re-deliver one if they do.
  18. I understand wanting to do away with a bad rating for non-delivery and agree that they should be removed. But, sorry I disagree about getting rid of ratings altogether or even make them optional for the merchant. As a consumer I find them useful. I take individual ratings with a grain of salt, but trends are usually a good indication of quality. When I see a product rated highly by a number of people I feel more confident buying it and may buy something from a merchant that is new to me that I wouldn't have purchased from otherwise. Conversely when a number of people give a product a poor rating, I don't buy it because I always end up disappointed in the product myself. There have also been times when I bought an item and had a problem with it. I try to contact the creator directly when this happens, but a number of times I get no reply or the brush off. When this happens I find that a poor rating gets the creators attention and generally the problem gets resolved, and if it doesn't I have warned others. Those merchants that "don't give a toss" about ratings are merchants that don't care what their customers think and one I wouldn't want to buy from. Maybe if more creators actually took the time to read their own ratings and paid attention to what consumers are saying they'd be more successful.
  19. Most dance HUDS will allow you to add your own dances to them. You can put single dances in them and dance with a partner using a synchronizing feature that a lot of them have. This will synchronize the movements of both avatars so that they mirror each other, however this will not be in the traditional woman in the mans arms but more a side by side dance. 'Couple' dances like ballroom type dances will generally require the ability to rez pose balls for best results,. This is a problem as most public dancing areas do not allow you to rez objects there. There are some 'couple' HUDS that don't rez dance balls, however the more complicated dances just don't work as well in them for a variety of reasons. Most people use a club's couple dancing system when out and have one at home or sets of dance balls for personal use. A 'chim' and a dance HUD are the same thing. However some dance HUDS also perform other functions such as serving as an AO also. The advantage here is that you do not have to manually turn your AO off and on when you begin or stop dancing. Dance HUDS range in price from Free to thousands lindens (If the HUD features other functions and/or comes with dances already loaded) Dance HUDS are available with a variety of features and you should choose the one the features that best fit your individual needs. Some features to consider are: Easy of use - do you type commands or do you get a control panel on your screen when wearing it Are the 'commands or controls' of the HUD easy to understand and operate? Can you select specific dances or choose to play the dances in order or randomly? Can you invite other's to dance the same dance you are doing and how many can you invite? How easy is it to add dances? What other functions does the dance HUD perform that may be useful to you. Such functions may be The ability to choose groups of dances that you program into it like a play list that are related by style or appropriateness to the type of music or venue The ability to also use it as an AO The ability to use it as a personal Teleporter by adding destinations (usually landmarks) to frequently visited sites The ability to play gestures The ability to greet other people without having to type the greeting in chat The ability to interact with other avatars by hugging, kissing, and/or spanking? The ability to play 'macros' that are preprogrammed or that you program yourself. Macros perform actions automatically, such as 'giving' something to another avatar or rezzing objects such as chairs. The ability to use the HUD as a flight assistant or defensive /offensive HUD If the HUD isn't free do you get future updates for free? Automatically or do you have to ask for them? As you can see there is a lot to consider in choosing the best HUD for you. It may be that you start with a basic free one and upgrade to one with a lot of additional features as you gain experience using one and can decide which features are most helpful to you.
  20. You need to find and purchase a 512sqm lot on the mainland on your own. Its not assigned to you.
  21. Most hair designers have hair bases they offer separately or with their close to the head or 'sleek' hairstyles where you wear the base and prims don't cover the entire head. I like using he ones from the hair designer as the color of the hair will match better. Skin doesn't see to be an issue with them BTW, as the edges of the hair seem to be alpha. I'd go to the shop where you bought your hair and look for one there. If you don't see one contact the designer and ask for one. I imagine they would be accommodating.
  22. Haven't seen any large hands yet, but the bake fail seems a LOT more common. I have a new fast laptop and ISP and still have it at least once a week. I don;t remember this happening on my 5 year old PC with slower net service or even when I first got my new one. Sometimes it fixes itself and sometimes not. I know it won't when I look in my inventory and I'm not wearing my shape and normal skin and when I try to wear it I get the message that you can't change until your clothes finish downloading. But they don't unless I clear cache, relog to a quiet sim, reload inventory, then do a character test (sometimes doesn't work) then wait and dump a library avi on. Then I can rebuild my avi. The whole process can take 30 minutes. I'm not the only one to notice. Most of my friends have had issues with this too. We've discussed it and it seems to have started not with the last server upgrade but the one before that.
  23. There isn't much difference between renting and buying land in SL except in buying land you sometimes have to pay for it as well as the first months tier and when you leave you don't get that money back unless you sell it to another resident. Some rentals allow you to use ban lines or a security orb to keep -people off your property - other forbid it. There is a difference of opinion among residents of SL about this. Some think its terrible to restrict access and that ban lines are ugly - Other's don't. That is why there is a choice. Personally if I am paying for land I want to be able to control who comes on it and would not rent land where ban lines or security orbs are prohibited. Some rentals will actually transfer the ownership of the land to you but restrict your ability to sell it. Others don't and you have to join a group in order to rez objects or control media, Usually the cheap rentals are the ones that make you join he group rather than transfer ownership with restrictions. If you rent property then this usually means it comes with a house or building on it and you are allowed to rez personal possessions. If you rent land, this usually means you can build or rez your choice of building on the land within any guidelines specified by the covenant. However some people who rent land also have an inventory of buildings you can choose from that they will allow you to use at no additional cost. All rentals have written rules even if the rule says there are no rules. Sometimes they come on a notecard that you get when you click a rent box for information. Others put the rules in the land's covenant, which can be found under the covenant tab of 'about land'. Be sure to read the rules and understand them before paying for anything as most places will not refund any money after you have paid it. Also be aware that the Covenant always over rules anything in a notecard as the covenant is specified by the Estate Owner, while a notecard could have been written by just a land owner who is renting just a lot and be in conflict with the covenant. It is the Estate Owner that has final say when there is a conflict.
  24. Be yourself, hang out in places that interest you, have fun, be sociable and try not to act like you are "looking" or desperate as that will chase potential people away. And remember that there is nothing wrong iwth having hight standards. If you find someone interesting to you who is interested in you too , don't rush into things fast. Take your time and get to know them for a while first. The most successful relationships always start out as friends first. I'm convinced that the you find the "best" ones that way.
