  1. Is the goal to provide a user interface or just present a client visually? ()
  2. I took a quick look at that Cybertron site and it looks like anything in the sub $500 range runs some pretty sad video cards. In each case, you'd have to run SL on pretty low graphics to stay out of slide-show FPS. (>_<) On the other hand, your question made me curious. I'm a builder. What would make for a good SL system for under $500(assuming US)? I took a tour of Newegg and filtered for all non-reseller parts and came up with the list below: Item Name Price N82E16819113378 AMD A4-7300 $40.00 N82E16813157578 ASRock FM2A68M $46.00 N82E16820231486 G.SKILL Ripjaws X 16GB DDR3 $52.00 N82E16814121896 ASUS GTX 750ti STRIX $0.00 $120.00 N82E16814125807 Gigabyte GTX 960 2GB $190.00 $190.00 N82E16814487154 EVGA GTX 960 4GB $0.00 $200.00 N82E16811353050 DIYPC MA01-G Case $20.00 N82E16817438015 EVGA 430W PSU $30.00 N82E16820173072 Sandisk 240GB SSD $60.00 N82E16822235070 WD 2TB HDD $57.00 As such, with the Gigabyte card chosen, that hits a grand total of $495US. Mind you, it's a bare (no keyboard, mouse, monitor) and tacking on another $140 or so for Windows, it's not exactly under $500. But, it'll be a smooth SLer, for sure. =^-^= Please take note that the configuration I've listed above is based on assumed compatibility, so don't run out and buy the lot without a touch more research. () You may also note that the graphics card is the most expensive item on the list. Most pre-built machines use a graphics card priced on par with the rest of the components. As such, they're typically the bottom of the barrel cards and only truly suitable for Facebook and Email. (>_<) Your question is far from 'noob', and arguably a rather advanced question most people fail to ask or even consider. The fact that you have a functional target (work well with SL and Blender) and determined a price cap ($500) leads you down a path which could result in a higher performing system than 80% of Sl users. =^-^= As for my own system... My CPU alone is over $1K. One could say it's a bit over-the-top. =^-^=
  3. Nothing in Second Life is standardized. So, when you say 'mining', that can mean anything from a decorative build that looks like a mine to a scripted game where you get points for shooting at sculpted rocks with a rapid fire puppy canon. () You're going to have to deal directly with the maker of the 'mine' location and what tools you may find. Particularly before you buy anythin. Otherwise, you may be throwing money away on a purely decorative rapid fire puppy canon. ()
  4. I'd likely flag the most prominent or egregious item and follow up with an inworld abuse report describing the whole-store violation plus a link to that flagged item. ()
  5. There are over nine thousand places to go in SL. Why bother with the layout of just one? ()
  6. You'll have to pull some pretty special strings with the Lab for such a thing. Aside from very few exceptions, as long as a group has 2 or more members, it will always exist. As such, the 'creator' is equally as permanent. (._.)
  7. Most of your rig is already pretty good. Honestly, ~the~ thing to upgrade would be that graphics card. Your 4100 already has quite good per-core performance (important for SL and games which rarely split threads). () Add RAM, yes. But look into a 4x kit. I've heard of bandwidth and overclocking issues with 8x setups. Really, only get 8 sticks when there's no other option for a very high grand total of capacity. (64GB or higher, currently) (>.>) M5 is a really good series of ASUS boards. My last setup was an m5a99 and it could run 1440p Ultra 24/7. () That Strix now... GTX970 cards were soft on the wallet, but, tended to be lackluster until the ti came to play. In comparison, the upcoming 1070 is going to be a beast for a buck. But, consider looking for a discount 980ti after the 10xx release. () Technically, there is no really good way to run SL to a peak without a totally monster system. Given so much content is created by ameteurs, the lack of optimization can drive even the best hardware into the ground. (._.) That said... Run Faster: I'm assuming high FPS in general, quick to instant key response: GPU - Maximizes FPS in optimized environments. CPU - Helps with FPS when optimizations go the wayside. RAM - One could never be too rich, too thin, or have too much RAM. Motherboard/Chipset - Very few benefits to justify an upgrade. Pretty much get what works best with your selected CPU/RAM. Render Quicker: I'm assuming loading new textures and less grayonaise after teleports: NIC - Look into network cards which reduce stack overhead. Onboard NIC chips on many boards can be somewhat lacking. Gigabit is nice to have, but, when plugging into a modem 10-100 port, it's little more than a word. Video RAM - Something has to carry those on-screen textures. Less Lag: I'm assuming lower hit when things get complex: CPU - In poorly optimized scenes, many resources get pushed back to the CPU. Huge FPS dips in SL can be due to throttling and maximizing per-core MHz can fill that void. RAM - Again. But mostly to avoid HDD swapping. Once data has to get pushed to paging, all hope is lost. SL + Browser + maybe an Email app can easily fill 10GB of RAM. Considering going double that. As for highest settings. Speed is money. How fast do you want to pay? As I stated, SL is simply poorly optimized. It'll take a beast of a box to deliver fast + pretty. My current machine, for example: Core i7-5960X (Overclocked to 4.2GHz, water cooled) Asus RVE/U3.1 LGA2011-v3 X99 (water cooled) Corsair Dominator Platinum (8x8) EVGA GTX980 Classified (Overclocked to 1.5GHz, water cooled) 1200W PSU Win10x64 ... and there are areas in SL where it will STILL tank. Much of the time, I can run 2 to 4 SL windows at Ultra. But, there are places and moments, when 1 window will go slide-show or even trigger a driver timeout. (>_<) TL/DR: Your current setup is pretty good. Add some RAM and a nicer GPU for significant gains. Anything else will gain little for the price. ()y
  8. I would have reather seen a thread about "How To NOT Get Muted". It would at least be far more realistic. ()
  9. What you got was effectively geometrically correct. For example, the corner you have highlighted at 42.4cm is actually 21.2cm measured at a 45 degree angle. To force that angle to have a constant depth, the outer corner (inner wall) would have to have a radius... Which would make it more of a bend than a corner. () EDIT: Something to consider: zoom the model until the grid is at centimeter scale, edit all the vertices at 45 and 90 degree angles and Ctrl+S snap to grid. Sadly, it won't work on curves. (._.)
  10. You changed your display name. User names are permenant to each account. You can choose to hide it on your display in the General tab in Preferences. But, that won't effect how others see it, as they get to choose what they see as well. ()y EDIT: ^^ Yeah, that. =^-^=
  11. Vive owner here and I been spending a few frustrating days trying to get SL to be friendly with it. No luck so far. Getting the project client to recognize that my GTX980 supports the necessary sharders alone was a sanity challenger. (._.) I plan to tinker with AltspaceVR and give Steam's SurrealVR a go. But, so far, nothing compares to SL. (>_<) CtrlAltStudio seems impossible as well, given they quit updating the project half a year ago. (T_T)
  12. Never heard of it until now but it looks pretty cool. The site comes accross like a Minecraft/Lego experience. Though, I don't think it will have much of an effect or impact on SL. Given, it's intended to be "family friendly" and apparently targeted towards kids. ()
  13. Time to search MP for robes made of coarse camel's hair. =^-^=
  14. SL primarily consists of user generated content. As such, the bulk of the content will reflect the bulk of the userbase. The content you're seeing is a reflection of the majority of financially contributing users. Otherwise known as Linden Lab's cash cow. () Suggesting removing the content is bascially requesting that they stop making money. Demanding a company to stop making money is folly, to say the least. =^-^= While a common mode of thought is that SL is what you make of it, the greater truth is that SL is what we make of it. "We" as in all of us, everyone, and all at once. In order to change SL, you're going to have to start with all of humanity. Good luck with that. ()y
  15. 38 slots is 10 too many, given how laggy most attachments can be. If you're truly running all 38 slots, please don't inflict your avatar upon anyone else. At best, you'll be the core source of lag and crashing for everyone in your midst. ()y
  16. With few exceptions, all land in Second Life is privately owned. Just like one is capable of locking the door on their real world home, SL landowners hold the ability to nearly completely control who has access to their locations. Even if a location appears public, it's only so because the owner has figuratively left the front door unlocked. () With that in mind, people maintaining any amount of open areas for events and crowds hold some responsibility to prevent and mitigate disruptions. Each is left to their own to determine what is disruptive or potentially so. Sadly 'newbie' accounts are often considered potentially disruptive. Mostly because common griefers may create throw-away accounts to run spur of the moment attacks and raids which can be extremely disruptive. As a result, some land owners go so far as to run scripts which automatically remove avatars below a certain age range. (._.) They're paying for the privelige. So, the Lab's stance is 'their land, their rules'... Even if they're jerks. (>_<) Gladly, Second Life is HUGE. There are over nine thousand places to visit for nearly any purpose. From music and dancing to education and arts and even *cough*yeah... Don't let any one location detract from your experience. There's far more to see and do. A good start is to check out volunteer help locations like The Shelter, New Citizens Inc., Builder's Brewery, and Caledon Oxbridge. You can get advice, freebies, and support from each to help you on your way to really enjoying what SL has to offer. ()y
  17. IRQL blue screens generally mean a driver has malfunctioned in a way which triggers Windows to attempt to protect itself. Being that it's netio.sys, it's probably your network drivers. (>_<) There's a chance that the network drivers from your prior OS were retained without an update from Microsoft or got corrupted at some time prior or duing the update. Now that Win10 is in place, it's addressing this un-updated or corrupted functionality and running into something that will no longer work. (._.) From here, I suggest looking for a spcecific driver for your network device and manually updating it. Don't rely on Windows update. Odds are, it's the source of the problem. Instead, find your adapter's specific drivers. For a turn-key system like Dell, you'll likely find supporting drivers on the Dell site. Integrated adapters in branded motherboards like Asus will be found on the Asus site. If all of that is exhausted, try the chip manufacturer directly. Even if the driver you find is the same one already installed or there doesn't seem to be a Win10 option available at the time, go for it anyway. Try installing the driver using Windows device manager and going through the specific menus to manually pick the exact .inf you've downloaded. () If Windows prevents you from re-installing a driver because it matches what you already have, delete the device from the device manager. Refresh the system for hardware changes and it should ask for driver files which you can direct to what you've downloaded. You basically want to force-feed your new files into Windows. ()y
  18. In short: It's real. () That is to say; there is likely no other online environment with a user base as diverse as what's found in SL. While it may be easy enough to chop the crowd into a couple umbrella archetypes, there is far more variety than can be said in a forum post. () I have personally met a range of people who span from a totally vapid horndog machismo to a mathematician who can make prims dance in unbelievable ways. Neither of them come close to representing what SL is and can be as a whole. But, each contribute in their own way. ()y
  19. The Right To Free Speech means the government can't arrest you for what you say. () It doesn't mean anyone else has to listen to your BS, or host you while you share it. () The 1st amendment doesn't shield you from criticism or consequences. () If you're yelled at, boycotted, have a show canceled, or get banned from an internet community; your free speech rights aren't being violated. () It's just the people listening think you're an A-hole. () And, they're showing you the door. ()y https://xkcd.com/1357/
  20. I take it you're probably in dispute with someone over this. What it mainly comes from is that many people SL are biased to fear and emotion over geometry and logic. (>_<) To wit; a freshly rezzed cube prim is half a meter high. With this in mind, a "normal" avatar for the consumerwhore mob is over 2 meters tall. Add to that, they often define beauty with a 2:1 leg:torso ratio and manchest akin to an upside-down pyramid. (=_=) I call them Boobzilla Frankenbarbie and Hullk Manchunkosaurus Rex. (=_=) Violate those delusional standards, and you're instantly the enemy. Their little pea brains can't compute the accurate dimensions and reasonable proportions. So they turn to age as a means of filling the void in their mind. Suddenly, anyone who dares to make a 160 centimeter avatar with near-human proportions is suddenly a "child" who must be removed. You are the enemy of their Stepford-esque fantasy life. All that is left for them is to shoehorn you into the most revlied class of human being so they can self justify their vain attempt of virtual morality. (=_=) To me, that avatar looks like Shreck's hipster sister. By far not a child due to D-cup breasts, hips that don't lie, and thunderthighs only an American could love. () Gladly, you can maintain some sanity. Not by changing your avatar, but, by finding groups of people with IQs exceeding what can be counted on a single set of fingers. I do beleive the body of your avatar is the Kemono rigged mesh avatar. You would do well to seek out Anime fandom groups and possibly even furry communities to find more like minded crowds. Or, at a miminimum, minded crowds. =^-^= Take myself for example. While I am aware of the mindless mob of oversized drones, I do very well to avoid them and rarely, if not never, find myself around people who gnash their teeth over my 162cm avatar. ()y http://darkly-cute.com/blog/wp-content/gallery/immy-xd/Snapshot_002.jpg Oh, and I often use the Kemono body too. =^-^= https://d3li5r2routkf1.cloudfront.net/users/4d293ae890820d142700035f/snapshots/original_551ded4e8da572764c000001.png https://d3li5r2routkf1.cloudfront.net/users/4d293ae890820d142700035f/snapshots/original_55600a04f8a1ec2fa8000001.png
  21. I pretend that I'm something I'm not in RL plenty enough. I use SL to escape from that. ()y
  22. LlazarusLlong wrote: Out of interest, why are you sneaking around looking inside this person's house? You may be their landlord, but presumably they haven't asked you to fix a leaky faucet or anything. Or does your rentals contract have a "Peeping Tom" clause allowing you to spy on them? Linden Lab's content guidelines are very vague at this point. Possibly intentionally so. This is highly likely due to the "wild west" nature that open virtural worlds still have. The ownership model is by far incomprarble to real world situations. As a land "owner", a person is actually holding limited license to access server space hosted by Linden Lab. So, at the end of the day, the Lab has total and final say over what can and can't be done in any given situation. (=_=) With that in mind, a SL land owner better be clearly aware of TOS violations committed on their land. When faced with someone commiting a violation on their land, there is a chance that they're held complicit by the Lab and could lead to bans all around. I, as a land owner, would surely NOT want to lose my account due to someone ripping up the rules and going into potentially illegal territory. (>_<) In Second Life, a house is not a house. Walls are not solid. Cameras can go anywhere. Privacy is not the default. Every tenant is a potential meth lab with the garage door open. If it were my house, you'd be darned skippy I'd want to be aware of what's going on in there. (=_=)y As for OP, go with what the others have said. An AR is by no means a conviction. It's only a catalyst for the Lab to look into potential violations of their own policy. If they find things to be in order according to their words, they will not take action. Otherwise, they will enforce the TOS as written. As someone who is consistently a target of false ARs, I can generally much vouch for that. =^-^=
  23. It could be something more. I can only speak for myself, but, SL turned into a chance for me to find why I was having so many social problems in RL as well. I found I can feel 'lonely' around my closest and best of firends. But, what I was perceiving as lonliness was actually anxiety. Once I started addressing the anxiety, things improved for me greatly. () As for being creative: I pretty much contend that I can't create anything either. But, people tend to tell me I'm creative. So, the closest I can come to in my mind is that I probably am able to create, I'm just not happy with the outcome. Still working on that. (>_<) Now, not saying "go away" or "leave SL"... But, do what's fun even if SL isn't part of it. Try search. Think of keywords for things you like a lot. Pop those keywords into search and see what comes of it. If you don't find anything, there's a chance that SL may not be within your interests. My own example is my early days in SL were spent searching for things like "anime", "moe", "cute", "pantsu", and probably most other words used as tags on Gelbooru. From that, I found people I easily got along with, places which really targeted my interests, and plenty of good reasons to log back in every day. () SL can be anything if not very revealing. Look for what you want, work with what you get, and find a way to make it your own. ()y
