  1. It's actually not odd at all. It likely means some gateway between servers controlling that set of regions and the servers controlling older regions is down. Look for a cable somewhere by those machines in the back that's been chewed by a mouse... Or maybe just a gateway machine that's gone offline in some random crash. I've told some of the REALLY odd reasons something like could happen that I saw in my early days working in tech at a NOC... but I've told them to too many people in RL and they're kinda specific... but just realize that... yeah some crazy stuff can happen... but issues like this can also be rather mundane - and taking out the whole region makes a LOT more sense than if just one sim got cut off.
  2. The primary value of getting an Omega instead of Catwa specific applier for the head is the ability to later change your brand of head if you so desire. Heads come in brands such as Catwa, Mayreal, Luteka, and others. As near as I can personally tell, Catwa's 'UV map' is the same as the 'default avatar' to a fairly granular level - meaning a properly made Omega applier will match it just as well as a catwa applier. But that's anecdotal. Your best bet is to buy a skin from a maker who includes in there a whole pack full of appliers for assorted major brands: both Belleza and Maitreya for body and maybe some of the off-brands as well, and at LEAST Catwa, Letuka, and Omega for head, and maybe some off-brands as well (nobody ever includes my favorite off-brand Mayreal, but well made Omegas work great on it so... /shrug). - that way you future proof your choice of skin should you later want to change one of the other brands.
  3. The only people who think SL isn't a video game are people too old or too 'not gamer' to have played any actual other MMO like titles... This place is straight up the anime demographic. Moreso even than a LOT of other video games, even actual anime titles...
  4. It has changed... but not always. You can make a sculpty that visibly covers someone else's land and if you position it right, they can't return it. Even if they CAN return an object right next to it. Likewise, you can make a mesh that is 100% visibly inside your land, with even more than a 0.1m gap, and sometimes the neighbor CAN return it even though the entire thing appears to be inside your land even when viewed in wireframe mode. - I've learned both of these facts the hard way in recent months...
  5. Anime is really popular among video gamers, this is a video game. So it makes perfect sense.
  6. Google analytics. You clicked on something or searched for something SL-related at some point between 2005 -2019 at least ONCE using an ID on a machine that also used a Google service in a browser that was not in private mode and had connected cache / cookies between the two instances of conduct... thus allowing Google to realize that the ID that views youtube also has an interest in SL... And now you will be spammed about that... forever... until the Analytics finds some other data-metric about that has a stronger tie to your shopping habits, or to the shopping habits of people with like interests... I get spammed Daz3D ads all-the-time... but youtube pretty much doesn't spam me for anything else. I haven't bought any Daz3d products in a while, but over the years I've likely dumped a few thousand towards those guys, so they're thinking I'll need another sniff of that line at some point... Good luck trying to avoid their metrics figuring you out... Google's AI might not be as good as Teslas at guessing 'WHAT' you will do next, but it's pretty good at guessing 'WHO' will do it...
  7. I have a script that has been continuously running since some time in 2010 or so. It shows the current population along with the highest and lowest that has ever been seen. Most of the time, it shows a number that is about no more than 10% off for that time of day, plus or minus, from what that number has been the entire time, for that time of day (as in, the value at 3am can be a tiny amount of the value at noon, but the value at 3am in 2019 is about 90-110% of the value at 3am in 2013...) It then gets low when folks here in the USA go to bed, and gets high when we're awake but not at work... It's a pretty simple script so it doesn't show detailed data, or even an average. If I had thought in 2010 that I would manage to still have un-reset copies of it 9 years later, I would have written in an averaging function... But the highest ever is currently 73,721 - I think that number is less than 3 years old, but exactly how recent I don't know. The lowest ever was 5762. That is also less than 3 years old, but for years the lowest was about 5800 or so... since 2010. I believe the low just means that SL did a 'check' right after some major crash took down most of the grid... which is an uncommon event, but something that seems to happen about twice a year, give or take. It's 12:37am PST as I type this - right now it says: 29,581 - about typical for this time of day, back in 2010 I often saw values like that in the late evening. In the day it might hit up to 57,000 on a weekend, maybe 45,000 on a weekday peak time. And that's kinda the same thing I've been seeing all these years... Of course it would be nice if I had thought to track an average... You can get a copy of the thing I put the script in, all those years ago, here: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Strugatsky/179/46/4087 - It's a sculpty vase... because we didn't have mesh back then. It's there right now, and as long as you don't reset the script, it'll keep on going for you. I can't say it will always be in that spot though, I have a habit of tearing my builds down and making new ones. That script did at one point spend about 6 months in inventory, but since it doesn't record an average, that's not a major loss - there is a small chance that at some point in 2017 the low got lower or the high got higher and I missed it... but the real value is just seeing the current and realizing that it looks like a familiar number. My larger purpose in this post is that... I have been hearing SL was dying since the first time I logged in, on my first account, in 2006. Yet from my experience, the needle has only moved the tiniest amount. A lot of people have left, almost every venue I knew when I started is long gone. But a whole lot of new stuff replaced it. But the one constant... is that there is always a set of people telling me SL is already dead...

  9. One more among many reasons why I drive a Tesla 'IRL'. The only sound a vehicle should make is Reggae blaring out the speakers. 🎼
  10. Buy a plot for $X Sell it for $Z But only after you've also paid $Y in tier... As for the land barons - a lot of them work by using donated or bought excess tier... - Buy a 512m plot, but premium actually gives you 1126m after the 10% group bonus... so you've got all this extra tier... somebody else offers to pay you a tiny amount to donate that extra to a group... - That's what makes it very hard to compete with the Land Barons. They can afford to wait on that plot a lot longer. As for abandoned land - you put in a ticket for it, odds are the response is that it goes up for auction. And abandoned land tends to usually come in one of two formats: a very bad location, or too large of a cut. Lindens have a habit of then joining it together into even larger pieces before putting it up for auction in response to your request. You CAN ask them to cut a small piece and auction that separately... and if you get lucky you might win that auction (I have done this).... But to outright buy abandoned land usually requires having land next it already, or getting lucky with your choice of Linden that responds to the ticket (at least back in the old days when things were a little wild - no idea if this would work these days).
  11. I have some alts that literally do have no friends who's IMs get capped. IMs can get capped from group notices or even transaction notices. I've discovered an alt who's IMs were capped due to notices saying that the IMs were capped... A big annoyance is usually the blank profile. The other one that gets me is when it has a screenshot of 2+ people and none of them is clearly the 'subject' so I can't tell which one is that avatar... But the biggest is anytime I see a RL photo in either of the SL or RL tabs or even in a Pick. You break 4th wall on me, I'm out. Several other things that used to annoy me are things I actually now do in my own profile... so I guess I got over those. There are lots of things that annoy me when combined with actions - like anyone with a name in the 'partner' field who is hitting on me or anyone else or sexing it up with someone who's name is not the name in that field. Or people who say "don't XYZ with me" that are XYZing at me... <- pretty much anything for that.
  12. I think there's just a freebie 'how to hit on SL chicks' kit available in one of the men's shops somewhere... Because the lines that get fed out, haven't changed in years...
  13. Growing up in San Francisco which is now covered in an ever-thickening layer of feces - gentrified artisanal dog and millennial human combined - has made me realize that maybe my city doesn't need to be so 'Artisanal' after all... So when those artisanal folks jacked up the prices and left the suburb for my former-ghetto... I moved into their old suburb along with all my chollas and homies and... clean streets... ya'll can have that wild artisanal city life... I prefer being able to breath without the dust coming in my lungs being mostly poop... Suburbs ain't so bad, if you got community in them. Even on 'regular mainland' themed estate rentals are very popular for that reason - despite being 'cookie cutter' to their theme, they inspire community. I missed out on this Linden Home thing - was actively avoiding the forums for a while and that while was the while for this. Maybe I'll get one in the next round if I have tier lying around.
  14. There are pluses and minuses. I have a lot more control over the land I own. What I am paying for it is also a lot LESS than almost any rental I've seen in SL - but only because of the nature of what I have (mostly double prim land or water land). I am also a lot more stuck to it. Say there's a really cool estate just over there, with a theme I'd really like to be part of... if I was renting here, I could just not pay tier next week and pay it over there instead. But because I own my parcel.... I've got to try and sell it on first, or pay for both places... I actually lived on a rental estate for 6 months 2 years back, while also still owning, at the time, about 8000-16000m of double prim and water land... that was pricey... and then one of the 'bonuses' of mainland kicked in: the estate owner threw in the towel and bulldozed their entire estate except for the parcels that were rented - it was this massive nudist river land place - and suddenly we were all landlocked and looking at flat land, so people rapidly left, and their spots got bulldozed as they did, and then shortly into the all the sims just closed. - if that ever happens to my mainland, SL is probably closing (it has happened once before that I know of, where the lindens closed down several sims - but that was in the very early days of SL, you can find what's left of that just north of Bay City; Shermerville - or so I have been told, but I am not actually sure that's true). "Tier" on mainland is the same whether your place is amazing and double prim, or absolute junk... "Tier" on a rental is supposed to reflect the quality of what you get, but is also often priced by how foolish the tenants, or rarely but sometimes the landlord are... On a THEMED rental estate, if somebody builds off theme, you can complain to someone. On mainland, they have to build off-TOS before you'll get any help. - on an UNTHEMED rental estate, you're basically screwed. Unthemed rental estates are more common than themed ones... but it's pretty obvious when one is of such a nature. It will look like SL mainland did back in 2006-2007: so garish it hurts to look. And it will probably be owned and unmanaged by one particular massive land baron that also sub-rents out sims to most of those themed places too... If you find a spot on mainland that is absolutely what you want... and you can afford to buy it... and you can afford the tier of premium, go for it. But if not, rent from someone else and keep your build something easy to pick up and move in case you feel the urge to jump away.
  15. When you buy on MP there is an option to examine the contents of what you're buying. The 'Contents' tab. That will sometimes show the actual contents, and the permissions on those contents. That is "usually" a way to spot a filled vs empty box. Not full-proof if someone is really working to hide things, but it can help lower the risk. I have yet to buy an empty box after looking at this tab, I have bought one when I failed to look, and I can also think of exactly how I would trick this were I a scammer trying to sell an empty box. So it will only protect you from people who sell empty on accident (the case where I bought an empty, I IM'd the seller and got an 'oops, here it is' reply the next day), not those with malicious listings.
  16. I've updated this one to have a base price of $45,001. Open to "reasonable" offers though. But reasonable is NOT the land baron that just IM'd me offering only half that when my plot is already half the price of plots around that don't even have more than 1 protected side...
  17. In filing an AR many years ago I included the chat log. The Linden that got back to me told me that technically I had violated the ToS by giving THEM, the Linden employee who had read a server log to verify things; the chat log...
  18. It's pretty easy to just copy the shape dial settings from one shape file to another. That said, I find the 'default included shapes' for just about every product that so includes such to be absolutely horrible messes. Exaggerated features COMBINED with bad understanding of anatomy. Basically Picasso as done by a 5 year old... so it's usually best to make one on your own - with some real world visual along side it, or a set of rulers to get anatomy "known" so any exaggeration can be done with controlled purpose rather than by chance.
  19. TMP has the best bosom, but Belleza is about 99.90357% as good... That said, the crotch on TMP is the worst on the market... no model definition at all - not even an indentation. Barbie level of detail. I am of the opinion that the body on Belleza is otherwise better, but then again I'm kinda known for being biased towards Belleza.
  20. My shape dials actually do have Bouyancy and Cleavage. Then in the Physics I can mess with Gravity and Mass. So I'm not sure what we're asking for here... ps: If you want even more 'sag', get "Natural Breast Enhancer" off of Marketplace. It will make a lot of clothing deform, but is great for achieving the effect when topless.
  21. I have to wonder who will trust this brand again?
