The OP may have been referring to the Alienware laptop sweepstakes which is only open to US residents but it isn't really a "competition" - it's a random drawing and it's not being run by Linden Lab. (Incidentally it's also not open to residents of Rhode Island either. Go figure...)
  2. Try to be right up next to the box and don't do it inside a building or near something like a big tree. Many objects have invisible "bounding boxes" that you don't notice as an avatar but that represent the size of the object to the servers. Sometimes when you're inside the bounding box of another object SL thinks you're trying to sit on that object instead of what you just clicked. Sometimes the problem is a "sim surround" that surrounds the entire region with landscape. This is worse when you're trying to sit on things like simple boxes that don't have special "sit targets" built into them. Another way of doing the same thing is to rezz a regular chair that has a built-in sit and use that - as I said, sometimes the built-in animation is more reliable than the default sitting on a simple object.
  3. 1) Under "Preferences" - "Chat" you can change the notification preferences for all types of chat, including group chat. It will all eventually end up in the chat console but you can set it so things like group chat don't make themselves noticed when they arrive. 2) Try not to store things in the "Received Items" area. When I get things I usually move them immediately to the main inventory folder or a subfolder. There have been reports of things disappearing under some conditions if you let them hang around in Received Items.

Oh, I'm well aware that you're no noob - the value of your contributions to this forum are a matter of public record.
  5. My teen skin came from Teen Turf - they have both male and female skins (which are you looking for?) Their selection is best seen in-world. You might also look at Mother Goose, Heaven's Gate and (female only) Pink Fuel.

A statement was " I just want to be able to visit popular places with other avatars on mid/high settings turned on". And I would agree for mid to possibly high settings, the card should perform to these specifications. This raises the interesting question as to why you said the exact opposite higher up the thread then.
  7. IvanMaximus wrote: Ren, you didn't read my other posts, because i sad there the definition of game. 3D Studio Max, Maya,...are computer programs for 3D modeling, animation and rendering, not a video games. Microsoft Word is a word processor (and text editor). You are confusing terms. Actually, you said, in so many words, "A game is a game." Forgive us for not being sure about what you actually meant. Now if you actually said what you consider a game to BE, we might be able to have a better discussion.
  8. Clicking "Buy Now" ALWAYS did exactly that. It NEVER put things in your cart. That's what the button with the picture of the shopping cart that says "Put In Cart" is for. And the marketplace pages themselves are exactly the same as I've ever seen them.
  9. No, you're lucky. "Jobs" in SL that tell you that you can get paid for doing easy things that require no experience are exactly as legitimate as the similar RL offers that arrive in your E-mail box. That "job" probably would have involved your buying some badly-made, overpriced clothing and taking a picture of yourself. You don't really need Lindens to have a good time in SL - I'd advise you to do exploring first and getting to know things. Then you may find an interest that can end up making you REAL fake money.
  10. The exact exchange rate varies somewhat but Linden Lab controls things so that it averages around L$250 per US dollar.
  11. If you had items in the basket before the changeover the were removed as part of the changeover. That was mentioned in the blog post (I think they edit it to add that after it was initially posted though.)

It would make customers' lives easier, making their products more competitive. There is no way that letting alpha mask textures out full perm could give competitors a significant advantage. I love how people assume a creator’s time is worth nothing. You do realize how many different shape combinations are available don't you? Add to that the differences in rigged mesh for each designer and you have more combinations than most realize. You can't buy perfection, let alone want it for free. So, exactly how long does it take to add that full perm alpha texture that you uploaded, into the product box? How much time did that take exactly? It would take me longer to time how long it takes to time than to perform the drag and drop. Get real. Nobody is devaluing creators time but on the other hand, you're suggesting that the customer should spend their time creating from scratch the same texture that a creator has ALREADY created? I'll say it again, add the full perm alpha texture to the product box, you've already uploaded it, it costs nothing in time or L$. Just do it! Not sure where you're coming from cuz we're on two separate pages. If you cared so much about how you look, you would do like I did, learn to make things yourself. Get real? I thought this was SL? Okay, I'll say it. You DO realize that Sassy is a pretty significant professional content creator in SL and has been for years, right? If SHE says that including a full-perm alpha isn't a big deal I'd be inclined to listen. It's like including extra buttons iwith a RL suit in case one gets lost. Yes, there's an art to selecting the proper button for an outfit, and yes, they have a cost. But it's NOT. ABOUT. The BUTTONS.
  13. I'm not dismissing materials on the avatar mesh at all - however, it will depend on two separate projects both reaching full production quality - materials rendering, obviously, and server side baking to get away from the historic laptop/ADSL/pr0n issue. Once those systems are in place it should be comparatively simple to add in materials and untangle the layering mare's nest. Meanwhile, since avatar skinning has always been separate from the build menu, I don't know how you can call the current interface "broken." HOWEVER, as of 12:05 PM EST June 24, 2013 the materials system is barely out of beta and the server-side baking ovens are still in their shipping crates. Insisting on avatar mesh materials NOW would increase the difficuly of both those projects - I think it makes more sense to wait and possibly include it in a backwards-compatible revamping of the base avatar itself some time in the future.
  14. I hear the annoying bouncing that indicates my avatar wants to say something. "Oh, oh, I got one! There was this guy, see? And he told this story that was sort of a joke? And he wanted to get people rled up, right? But most people didn't see it was a joke but they didn't get riled up either. They were all just, 'meh." And so... yeah." "And the moral is, 'Make sure your alts have at least as good writers as your regular avatar guy has.'' " "Oh wait, that story was kind of lame, wasn't it?"
  15. Textures on the avatar mesh are composited from several different layers that could be of very different ages. Imagine wearing a lace blouse with a normal map under an older satin vest without one. Materials + avatar mesh = mare's nest. Also, for at least a few weeks, that mare's nest may have to be calculated on a seven-year old laptop and uploaded by someone sending it wirelessly to bad ADSL while thier neighbor watches awesome pr0n. Meanwhile, that mare's nest would be painted on an avatar mesh that everyone acknowledges is pretty pathetic.
  16. "Sunshine" is the codename for the "server-side baking" project. People will need to update viewers - you were asking about it a few weeks ago. The changes are now imminent. What you see is the login message for viewers that use the standard login page; it might also have been sent by some other means.

  18. You should have gotten a folder full of a lot of files. Now open your inventory window. First of all, if the folder's in your "Recieved Items" area drag it into the main part of your inventory just for safety's sake. Now click on the folder and drag your mouse and drop the folder onto your avatar in your world view. Your avatar should change to the dragon. You may have bitten off more than you can chew with an avatar like this though - it's quite complicated for a beginner. I'd advise either searching on-line for more info on the basics of Second Life or go to an area that specializes in helping new players. You can find these areas in the "Destination Guide."
  19. Suspiria Finucane wrote: Coby Foden wrote: Materials can be used on prims and mesh (rigged and non-rigged), but not on system clothing. Help a girl out :matte-motes-wink: Are you saying the system can block specular textures for one thing and not another? I looked in the wiki (I may have missed it) but couldn't find this information. Perhaps you can point to the documentation for this. It isn't a matter of "blocking" specular textures - avatar textures have never had specular maps and they haven't put instructions into the viewer to look for them on avatars with the new materials system. Since avatar textures are actually several textures "baked" together and combined into one (well, technically combined into one of THREE - head, torso and legs) I can see how they wanted to avoid this complication.
  20. My understanding is that the bandwidth is just for the old UDP transfers and it's there because UDP has few good ways to verify data or have a two-way conversation with your viewer so it'll send data at a given speed regardless of whether or not it will be recieved cleanly. Most other internet communication is by HTTP, which has a built-in verification system and can adjust speeds to make the transfer cleaner. You should bear in mind that your actual bandwidth used will be the "bandwidth limit" PLUS HTTP connections PLUS the audio stream. UDP can and will use all of your connection up to 3000 kbps if you don't throttle it
  21. The timing on limits is from your first transaction on Lindex - if you've never used it, you have to make one transaction (all you can do is buy at first) and then the limits will change with time and your activity. They'll never start changing until you make that first transaction though.
  22. SLtesterL2 wrote: How many accounts are you allowed to make isn't it 5? If I go over this limit, can I just delete an alt to make another or will it not matter? Thank you As far as I can tell, they track multiple accounts by E-mail address. For more SL accounts, try using a different E-mail.
  23. If you're referring to the forums they're tracked separately. Your first login to the forums is treated as the start of your forum account - it doesn't correspond to your in-world account date.
  24. There are a couple of places that offer good-quality content from a number of creators for free as a way of promoting those creators. I'm very familiar with FabFree Station in a sim called The Wash and the Free Dove in a sim called Gallii. You can find enough to put together quite a nice starter avatar at those two places. Avoid most places calling themselves "Freebie [whatever]" though.
  25. Odds are this "complaint" will end up in the digital trash. From your description you did nothing remotely reportable, much less punshable, so there's nothing to dispute. But you do now know one of many places in SL run by idiots. Someone should make a map...
