I have eight physical dolphins here, most of which have been running for almost a year with no problems, however in the past week they have escaped from their designated area three times. They are either returned from another region or parcel or I find them at the sim border with their physics turned off. This happens with all the physical objects here, not only the dolphins, and they are all affected at the same time so it is not the scripts in the objects failing. Has anyone else experienced this or does anyone know what may cause it? Have you tried resetting the scripts anyway? I'm assuming they're running all the time so they were running when the server software was rolled to a new version last week. I've had "always on" things like my security system and my breedable cat throw script errors after a server roll but they went back to normal after doing things that reset the script.
  2. Does this by any chance happen mostly with avatars you've seen recently at a different location wearing the same outfit? The one time I saw this was when my partner and I teleported from our home to a club and I couldn't see her until I relogged, and I believe there was a similar problem with one of my alts and her friend in a similar situation. Might be some sort of cache issue like the missing prim problem.
  3. I don't think it would be practical to do it with an image on a prim because the problem is the prim's actual physical location and size which can't be faked without doing very bizarre and unreliable things with the physics engine. It MIGHT be possible to do it with some sort of "particle" system though, because particles are generated in the viewer and already have the property of always being parallel to the field of view.
  4. If you're using the LL viewer version 3.5.2 update it to the current one, which is 3.5.3. I had exactly the same problem with 3.5.2. Various viewers have been updating their sound libraries lately (this will probably mean nothing to you, but it was from FMOD to FMOD EX) and the freezes were a side effect for 3.5.2 but, for me at least, it's fixed in 3.5.3. Firestorm hasn't issued a viewer using FMOD EX yet; Singularity has but, again, for me, it didn't have the same problem.
  5. There may be a texture on that sim that your viewer can't open properly for some reason. I've had similar problems with some viewers. There are two basic types of image decoding used by SL viewers - KDU by Kakadu, which is used by the Linden Lab viewers and Firestorm, seems more reliable but it requires the viewer maker to have a license to use it. Most other viewers use OpenJPG, which doesn't require special licensing. Try logging into that location with a different viewer, especially one which uses the opposite image-decoding system to the one you usually use.

The word is "playing" but they aren't playing a "game." The role of Indiana Jones was "played" by Harrison Ford - does this mean Raiders of the Lost Ark was a game?
  7. The Lab is working on a system where multiple viewer release candidates are tested by groups of people before they're released as the main viewer. It's similar to the release-candidate server channels. De-selecting that box means that you opt out of being in a position to find yourself testing future viewers.

Indeed, because what once was the city of Rome is today a scooterless patch of empty scorched earth, devoid of life, silent save for the keening of the lonely wind. Oh, wait...

They really should improve their service... even while it would be a investment... This is because the 3rd party exchanges are in the business of giving out money - that's what they do. Linden Lab isn't - the give out money only because they feel doing it would assist their core business. For example - take where I work in RL. It takes me a while to get paid. BUT - where I work doesn't exist strictly to pay me; they are in business to do something else and they pay me so I will do work for them in order to help them with their core business. They want me to stick around and keep working for them but it doesn't help them to pay me instantly. If I needed instant money I could go to one of the "payday-loan" establishments that are only in business to give out money. However, in order to do this they charge fees and have other conditions that mean it's not in my best interest to rely on them for day-to-day living, so I just wait for my regular paycheck. Your Lindens have real-world value ONLY BECAUSE LINDEN LAB CURRENTLY WANTS THEM TO, and they want them to only because is an incentive for some people they think are useful to their work . They definately DON'T want Lindens to be considered a currency for a lot of reasons.
  10. In RL I don't see the money I earned for anything from 5 to 18 days after I do the actual work because I get a bi-weekly paycheck that's issued on Fridays after I turn my timecard in on Monday morning. I'm just sayin'....
  11. My avatar returns from the brief jaunt I sent her on in the space-time transporter she inherited from her eccentric scientist grandfather. "You were RIGHT! In the parallel universe where Linden Lab gave a hard schedule for rolling out Server Side Appearance, the EXACT SAME PEOPLE were bawwwwwwing the EXACT SAME AMOUNT, only they were saying, 'Why is Linden Lab rushing to meet an artificial schedule instead of being flexible to allow the users and third-party-viewer developers to be ready?'" " How did you KNOW?" I just pat her on her head. "You'll know when you're older, Little Theresa - you'll know when you're older..."
  12. I just successfully edited both old and new scripts from inventory on a BlueSteel sim running 276216. It may be a problem with a specific sim.
  13. 1) Go to the local chat in the chat box. 2) Click on the button with an arrow pointing to the upper right. This will split the local chat into a separate window. 3) In this new windown, click on the button with an arrow pointing down at the right side of the chat entry field. Other people's chat will now show up briefly at the lower left of your screen and you can move the chat entry bar wherever you like. Clicking on the arrow again (which will change into an up arrow) will re-open the chat box so you can review past chat if you like.
  14. When did you notice this? 276216 has been on BlueSteel sims since last Wednesday. In any event that code isn't being promoted this week and there will be a different project on BlueSteel that will be loaded on Thursday.
  15. Just so you know, planes CAN enter no-object-entry parcels and full parcels as long as there's an avatar in them. If they couldn't cross-country flight would be basically impossible. Vehicles are considered part of the "prim pool" a region supports over and above the prim totals of each lot (also used for things like temporary prims and prims worn by avatars) A full parcel will stop a plane or other vehicle only when it's crossing a region border into a full lot - that's a server glitch; it's not SUPPOSED to stop them. The basic problem I have with the original proposal in this thread is it breaks the convention of having each region being a single consistent simulation - the server would need to simultaneously run "parallel universes" and that would bog things down for everyone.
  16. There isn't a way to make the standard avatar shape small enough to be a realistic toddler - not sure what your objection to mesh is. Before mesh, some toddler wannabes used deformers to crush the shape to a shorter height but this meant you needed to wear special prim clothing to cover the deformed area. Totsipop allows you to have a mesh toddler body but use the standard avatar head, which means you would have the same full face customization options of a standard shape.
  17. Okay, tough love time - The problem is that having up-to-date drivers for that chip is like having an up-to-date Montgomery Ward catalog - just because it's the latest one available doesn't mean that it's usable in today's world. It looks like you've installed Windows 8 on an aging laptop. The problem is that Intel, your video chip maker, hasn't seen fit to write Windows 8 drivers for your graphics chip because it's several years old, and I'm sure Toshiba, your laptop manufacturer, won't either. That means you need to use generic Microsoft drivers which are JUUUUST good enough to use things like Word and Excel and expecting them to cope with 3D graphics isn't a realistic expectation. You can try rolling back your operating system to what you had before but even then your laptop will be barely adequate to get on SL.
  18. With the old system when changing your avatar's appearance every texture took three trips through the network - one from the servers to your viewer, where they were assembled and "baked" into the avatar clothed skin, then this baked avatar had to be sent from your viewer to the servers, then it was re-sent BACK from the servers to your viewer so you'd actually see the same baked avatar as everyone else. This third step is why after baking your avatar will look crisp at first, then blurred for a period of time, then (hopefully) crisp once more. It also meant that people's internet connections were relied on to send bit-heavy graphics as uploads when many consumer internet connections have woeful upload speed/quality. With the new system, your viewer sends the UUID's of the textures to a baking server which assembles the baked avatar and then sends it to your viewer, thereby cutting out 2/3 of the texture transmission.

Here's my specs taken from Firestorm : CPU: Intel® Core i5-3330 CPU @ 3.00GHz (2993.28 MHz) Memory: 16280 MB OS Version: Microsoft Windows 7 64-bit Service Pack 1 (Build 7601) Graphics Card Vendor: NVIDIA Corporation Graphics Card: GeForce GTX 645/PCIe/SSE2 Windows Graphics Driver Version: 9.18.0013.1106 OpenGL Version: 4.2.0 I realize the graphics card is a newer one on the market, and is unsupported by SL, is there any way around that so I can see shaders and even better shadows again? The card itself is more than capable of running everything, just the viewers won't let me There have been Firestorm JIRA's about certain video cards that are listed incorrectly in the table that the viewers use to look up the potential settings for video cards. If you do a search you should be able to find this JIRA - if I remember right it has instructions for editing this table so the card will be recognized. In any event you should file or comment on the JIRA so that your card is recognized as one of the problem children.
  20. You're sharing the line with everyone who uses the same line going to your phone company and that can be a lot of your neighbors who you've never met.
  21. The information in "Avatar weight" doesn't have anything to do with your control problems, it just means that it's pretty easy to draw. Does your avatar sometimes look like iti's walking in a straight line forever without your being able to control it? That means you have problems with your internet connection and your viewer isn't getting updates from the server properly. If your avatar moves to places that you click your mouse and you don't want it to go to "Preferences" - "Move and View" and set "Single click on land" to "No action."
  22. Halberd37 wrote: Well, I use this modem to connect since I started to explore Second Life. It has a ASDL conection. I've configured my graphic drivers and I could log in, but to the next week I can¡t log in again. I've configured my graphic drivers to the maximum and still can't log in. But the strange details is I can log in only in the morning. Another Detail: I've tried again the ping command again and I had not lost packets. What will be the problem? ADSL lines are shared with a lot of other people and with conventional voice telephone calls, and also they deliberately throttle upload speeds. SL needs a constant two way connection between your viewer and the servers with a fair amount of data being sent from your computer to the servers. This is different from something like streaming a movie, where the movie-streaming server needs very little communication from your computer - just enough to tell it when to start and stop the stream. There may be too many people sharing your line and the communication from your computer to the servers gets delayed or lost. This would explain why you can log in early in the day (when fewer people are online) but not later.
  23. If you want to take total control over your avatar's appearance you could try making your own skin. Eloh Eliot put a variety of Photoshop templates on the Internet that are free to use and modify, and they can be edited with GIMP if you don't have or want to invest in Photoshop. https://sites.google.com/site/another/resources
  24. If you can still use the hardware you currently run Firestorm on I see no reason to stop using it. You can turn down bandwidth and adjust various settings to reduce the load on the connection but more-complex viewers don't necessarily require faster connections.
  25. SegmentationFault String wrote: Hah! Thanks, Theresa. Glad to know it's not just me. Jewel and Marigold, after all these years I'm very familiar with the amazing skins available both for free and for reasonable proces in the marketplace. But as I said, I'm fond of my self-designed avatar with her nerdy, totally non-glamorous freckle face and thick glasses. Obviously I'll have to settle for somebody else's design since that feature no longer works properly, but it's a shame. It's also a moot point. Since my RL wife started joining me in SL, I almost always use my male avatar. She feels weird going out dancing with the homely nerd girl, and the male almost never wears any kind of makeup :-) Think of it this way - you could customize your skin before but the "design" you could do was extremely limited. Basically, you could cook your own dinner but your only ingredients were varying amounts of bologna, circus peanuts, canned peas and LIfebuoy soap. The alternative is to have your dinner sent in from any restaurant in the world. Odds are you'll find something that suits your taste even better.
