But I may be nitpicking/going overboard on something that isn't even much of a big deal. I tend to go a little nuts on details... I'd go with the "nitpicking" option. You're well within natural spacing; far more natural than most SL shapes. In RL there isn't a "perfect" face. All people, even the most "beautiful" ones, have one eye higher than the other and one eye larger than the other. If you take each half of your face and mirror it you'll get two noticeably different faces. STOP WORRYING ABOUT IT. Just be glad you're in SL because you sound like you'd buy a plastic surgeon new Bentleys every year in RL and still never be satisfied. Now go out and make everyone think your avatar is beautiful, regardless of how it looks, because of the person behind the keyboard it represents. XOXOXO Theresa

There is no such thing as "alpha layer". What does not exist cannot be worn. :smileyindifferent: :matte-motes-nerdy: ... just a reminder for all that it is indeed called Alpha Mask (not alpha layer). Thank you for your attention. :matte-motes-big-grin: :smileywink: (Couldn't resist... sorry.) :smileytongue: :smileyvery-happy: Perhaps the wiki is the source of this confusion. :matte-motes-agape: Max. # of clothing layers per slot - 5 (this includes alpha and Tattoo Layers) Wow! The viewer coders did know that it is Alpha Mask. Then the Linden who wrote the wiki insists calling this mask a layer. :smileysurprised: :smileyfrustrated: Them guys really should sit at the same table more often and discuss things over. :smileywink: :smileyvery-happy: When I'm wearing my Catwoman costume I WEAR a MASK, over my eyes, because that's what Catwoman does. I also WEAR an ALPHA mask/layer under my boots. In the option to take off CLOTHING, one of the options is ALPHA. If I were to wear something else that requires an alpha, I'd put on a second one, which can be taken off separately in order. Because they're LAYERED. So an alpha is both a MASK and a LAYER. As a dying linguist once said, "I am going to - or about to - die. Either is used." The fact that an alpha is a wearable bit of invisibility is no more or less impossible than any other layer of data being considered as clothing in SL. Nothing can be a thing sometimes - aren't you German? How about "zwishenraum" ?
  3. What may be the problem with those dresses is that a texture might be an alpha texture even if it doesn't have to be. With a non-alpha texture, each pixel tells your graphics card, "Hi! I have this much red, this much green and this much blue." With an alpha texture each pixel will say, "Hi! I have this much red, this much green, this much blue and I'm this transparent." If a file was set up as an alpha texture it will cause the problem you're seeing even if none of it is actually transparent - i.e. all of the pixels say "I'm not transparent at all." It'll be caused because the video card treats it as a POTENTIALLY transparent texture because that's how the file organization works.
  4. Depends on what your definition of "fun" is. You can get free vehicles of just about every basic type if you look around. Hunts let you get free clothing and other items. Most dance clubs are free to go to. You can generally get free equipment for a lot of "outdoor activities" like skiing, sledding and surfing. None of the equipment will be the absolute best you can get, mind you, but you can still have fun. It also helps if you make a few friends first so you have people to do things with. Oh, and I almost forgot. This is Second Life's tenth anniversary week so there are all SORTS of related events going on, including a big ol' cluster of exhibition sims to check out and a variety of swag.
  5. What it does is take a shape and make it so that the physics simulation doesn't think there are any holes or convex areas - it's like "shrink-wrapping" the shape, so the "convex hull" of a tube would be a cylinder. It makes it a lot easier for the simulation to calculate things that might collide iwth the object because it can ignore things going THROUGH the shape. To the eye it will look exactly the same. The only time it would be a problem is when you've got something like a wall with a door opening through it - the physics engine wouldn't let someone walk through the door if it;s set to "convex hull." Since it makes it simpler to calculate things the "land impact" gives convex hulls an advantage and gives tubes and other hollow shapes a big penalty. A rule of thumb is that an object made up of simple shapes and no sculpts can have its prim usage cut in half by changing it to "convex hull.' There are more detailed discussions in the forums if you search for them.

What you're doing is asking how you can use a bicycle to pull a horse trailer. Netbooks aren't designed for 3D graphics - they're designed to be small, light, thrifty with power and inexpensive. All of those things are basically incompatible with heavy (or even moderate) 3D graphics capability. Even if it's upgradeable it's basically designed to do the exact opposite of what you want it to do. Every cent you spend trying to make it run SL better will be better spent on something else. Sorry....
  7. The 3D environment of SL is in many ways a remarkably flexible building toy. You can make a simulation of just about anything you can imagine and it's more accessible than "professional" tools. BUT - it also limits how good any particular simulation can BE. Ir also wasn't designed with the durability that real-world major commercial applications need. Basically, it's LEGO, okay? And I'm not saying for a moment that LEGO isn't awesome, but it is what it is. If you read every article about the "failure" of Second Life and substitute LEGO for Second Life you wouldn't wonder why the platform failed, you'd wonder why major companies put not only eight-year olds but apparently rather SLOW eight-year olds in decision-making positions.
  8. The hair editing sliders are the equivalent of finding a package of carbon paper in the bottom drawer of your office desk. They were meant for a function that is basically never used any more. The old "hair" that they modified is still part of your avatar but new hair technology means those sliders are really only useful to set the shape of your eyebrows. The same thing will happen with the sliders under "Edit My Skin." A vanishing number of skins still use a few of those settings but basically they're obsolete.
  9. You're seeing a problem that happens when objects with alpha TEXTURES are in front of each other. Alpha textures are ones that are partially transparent, like the ones on the pieces of the hair that are "wispy." You aren't seeing a reflection; you're actually seeing straight through your avatar. It doesn't have to do with alpha LAYERS which are worn on your underlying avatar and don't cause the same problem. I'm curious as to why that dress uses alpha textures at all though - does it have sheer spots? I can wear a very similar mesh hairstyle with mesh dresses without seeing that issue. See if the same thing happens with mesh clothing from a very experienced meshmaker like ColdLogic (using a demo should be fine.) If you paid a lot for that dress I'd notify the maker of that issue - using the alpha texture may have been a mistake and it will cause the same problem with a lot of mesh hair.
  10. Actually there are a few areas that are now permanent "flea markets" to resell things - they popped up as a reaction to the popularity of the "Arcade Gatcha" events. You can usually put things out and put a price on them. HOWEVER - everything has to have transfer permissions. Most things in SL are EITHER copyable OR transferrable but not both unless it's a special item meant for resellers that usually have licensing restrictions. Most clothing and almost all skins are copyable but NOT transferrable.
  11. The inventory servers send inventory information over one folder at a time and there's a timeout that's set up to keep it from hanging up on one folder forever. That timeout tends to hit at around 10,000 items in a single folder. It may be that the connection is timing out before the inventory servers can catch up. Try restoring a large chunk of your trash items temporarily then try deleting the contents of your now-smaller trash folder. If that worrks you can re-delete the files you restored in your next session.
  12. Drake1 Nightfire wrote: LL SAYS DON'T DO IT. And Inspector Renault said you shouldn't gamble in Casablanca. When his superiors were on his back, that is. They crack down hard on brand names but as far as designs go? If they enforced branded designs there basically wouldn't be a vehicle seller left in Second Life.
  13. Second Life functions under United States law and fashion design is NOT legally protected under law in the U.S. - the only industrial design element that IS protected would be boat hulls, interestingly enough. There was an attempt to pass a law to legally protect fashion design (but for no more than three years) but it failed. This is different from actual design PATENTS, which require a long process to acquire and be and for TRADEMARKS (like product names and logos) which are both protected. http://popbetty.com/2007/04/all_about_hr_50.html
  14. Visit Blue Mars. Watch out for tumbleweeds.
  15. The "Safe Place" signs are only available from Marianne McCann who is very active in SL and takes appropriate behavior with/around child avatars very seriously. Contact her and I'm sure she'll look into things. If the store is actually selling content that would fall under the "Adult" categories of the Code of Conduct they can't do that on moderate land anyway, "safe" sign or no sign, and they can be reported to LL for that. Not knowing what the store is offering I don't know whether the merchandise would fall under that prohibition or not. I should point out that real children have penises or vulvas and see at least one every day - if they didn't they'd gradually swell up and explode like hot yellow water balloons.

  17. I've only been on SL since late 2010 and I haven't really run into much Bloodlines harrassment. Among my family of alts I've had maybe two conversations from vampires looking to bite me, both quite polite, and maybe two or three unsolicited bite requests among all my accounts. Bear in mind that I never spent a lot of time in newbie locations but I've spent SOME and there are enough OTHER nuisances there that Bloodlines barely registers. Everything I've seen says that Bloodlines was very obnoxious a few years before I joined SL. Of course I can remember when Samsung was largely known for cheap microwave ovens. Things change...
  18. 1) The symbol isn't officially recognized by Linden Lab. 2) When I was a REAL innocent child I read the lyrics printed on the jacket of my brother's copy of Frank Zappa's "Over-Nite Sensation" (look up 'Dinah-Moe Humm' sometime) and my young fragile mind wasn't warped because I had no idea of what the nasty lyrics MEANT until years later. 3) Chah. (My avatar, who's a teenager, asked me to throw that one in.)

I'm sorry but you'd think they would gather some of the best graphic designers in the industry (not just on SL) and have them create mesmerizing, inspiring work. I see the same old prims, sculpts, even mesh. sad. Also, the promo for this was disgraceful as well. Don't flame me please, it's just my opinion. The director of a middle school band could bring in the New York Philharmonic to play the annual concert instead of actually having the students play. The music would almost certainly be better, assuming that the NYPO would rise to the occasion and not phone it in. But if you're going to do that, why have the kids be in band at all?
  21. RHOWYN wrote: I am a Premium member. Can have the mainland I bought (2048) AND the 512 that the premium membersreceive? Yes - you'll have to pay extra to own more than 512 square meters but if you pay the tier to own 2048 square meters extra ($15 a month if I remember right) you'll be able to own a total of 2560 square meters - it can be all one piece or smaller separate lots that add up to 2560.
  22. Madeliefste Oh wrote: Christian Louboutin has a zero tolerance policy when it comes to fake products. See: www.stopfakelouboutin.com/en Copyrighing design elements is a very tricky thing because things can look the way they do for a number of reasons. I notice that one thing Christian Louboutin cracks down on is red soles on shoes. As it happens I have a pair of SL black pumps that has the option of having the soles red - this option mentions nothing abut Christian Louboutin or any RL designer at all - it was simply included as an appropriate-seeming option for vampires and I wouldn't be surprised if the SL designer though nothing about the connection to Christian Louboutin. Actually, vampires may have a case for suing Christian Louboutin for cultural misappropriation.
  23. Mara Inkpen wrote: Hi! I have currently pretty powerful pc with GTX 680 video card, but it still cannot handle max graphics with max viewing distance in official SL viewer, so i am thinking about the upgrade. GTX 780 looks most logical to me, but .... what if Titan will work MUCH better for me? I know Titan is just A LITTLE more powerful than 780 in most games, but in SL? What if Titan's 6 GB of video RAM vs 3 GB of 780 will be great advantage for SL where we have tons of small objects and openGL instead of DirectX? Maybe someone knows, how good SL viewer can use video memory? Or, maybe, it will be even better to get professional card, like Nvidia Quadro K4000? I know almost nothing about these devices, but they work with OpenGL, dont them? If yes, and Quadro will be very good for SL, is it possible to have Quadro and GTX 680 installed in same system in same time, to use Quadro in SL and 680 in games? And maybe use Quadro as physical engine while 680 works as graphical engine? I know my english is not good, and i am sorry The difference between a GTX and a Quadro looks to be the difference between a racing car and a semi truck - they're both very powerful and very good at what they do, but they're meant to do fundamentally different things and one won't necessarily be any good at what the other specializes in. It looks like the Quadro is optimized for very complex 3D calcuations like ray-tracing - it's meant to create absolutely perfect frames one at a tile.It would be for things like professional photorealistic rendering or computer animation and it won't be set up for sheer speed - for instance, there's a scene in Pixar's Cars 2 where every frame took ONE-HUNDRED SEVENTEEN HOURS to render. Reading in the description of the Quadro, nowhere does it say "RULEZ FOR GAMES" so I'd assume it's not that good at putting together comparatively simple frames very quickly, which is what a gaming video card is designed to do.
  24. That usually happens when you're wearing rigged mesh. It may be only some meshes that do it. If you're wearing any mesh itmes take them off and see if it helps.
