SL Curiosity: Showing Less = More
Amina Sopwith replied to Amanda Crisp's topic in General Discussion Forum
In a world where everyone dresses skimpily, the person who covers up a bit is rarer and actually stands out more... Plus, I do hate to say it, because obviously people can and should dress however they like, but if you're covering a bit more skin, it may allow more energy to be focused on the music, and give the impression that that's what you want.- 16 replies

I think I know why I admire Prince Harry.
Amina Sopwith replied to Gopi Passiflora's topic in General Discussion Forum
This is sadly true, and I'll hold my hands up to it. I learned a couple of other languages at school, and I did well there, but I was certainly never anywhere near fluent and I've forgotten a lot of them now. I've never had any natural aptitude for languages, though I wish I had. But in our limited defence, English is the most widely spoken language in the world so it makes more sense to learn it for most people. Also, if lots of major, international films, songs and TV programmes were in another language (with subtitles on screens), it would make it easier to learn. I had a conversation once with a Thai lady who was very self conscious and apologetic about her English. It was a darn sight better than my Thai...- 111 replies

Yes, that's all correct. We are a constitutional monarchy and that's what it means. Though as PPs have said, they certainly do have influence through their wealth and profile. That is also why, while all the criticisms of monarchy are entirely valid, I'm less worried about constitutional monarchy than I am about the PM being able to put his mates and supporters in the House of Lords.- 111 replies

They said that it wasn't the Queen or Prince Philip who had made the comments. (I know, I was surprised too. We all assumed it was Philip and it might have been better for their PR if they had let us believe it. But they said it wasn't.)- 111 replies

Overall, the British public is in favour of the monarchy. As Maddy's chart shows, its popularity has peaks and drops relating to certain events, and of course there are many passionate anti-royalists but overall, at a national level, it's pretty steady. I remember the street parties when William and Harry married, and even when Charles and Camilla did...bit more subdued then, but you expect that for a second marriage in later life after tragedy, whoever the couple is. How much this will change when Charles ascends to the throne, I don't know. The Queen is hugely popular. I believe that even anti-royalists, while they hate the role itself and want to see it scrapped, mostly think that as long as it does exist, she does it well. Charles has been talking about a slimmed down monarchy for many years and I think even royalists mostly think that's a good idea. I don't blame Harry and Meghan in the slightest for opting out and I was supportive of them. But I've said from day one that I didn't think they were handling their PR very well.- 111 replies

Why would he do that? He's clearly always hated being royal.- 111 replies

I'm just thinking...Meghan can't fly, pregnancy over the Atlantic is a bad idea, so he's going to have to come back for his grandfather's funeral, just weeks after THAT interview, and face his family alone, especially his grandmother. I do NOT want to be him right now.- 111 replies

That's almost all humour. What makes you think they're mutually exclusive? It's usually just a matter of severity. Or tone. Tom and Jerry is just pure sadism but it's aimed at kids. (I always hated it, though.) It's still all about suffering, albeit clearly made out to be unreal. Lady in church. I think this is hilarious. May not be your thing, it's extremely British for several reasons, but it's all about someone's angst and poking fun. Not in any way mean spirited, though.

Nothing at all. This video is the best. Peeve: that previous generations got the twist, Night Fever and gems like this, later ones got the floss...and I got the Macarena.

I thought all spiders were poisonous, and it was just a case of whether or not their poison was dangerous to humans. I scanned that article; seems to confirm there are no species in the UK that would cause worse harm than an inflamed bite at the most, unless you already have some kind of allergy etc; same as wasps. Australia's spiders, and other animals for that matter, do seem to be literal overkill. What on earth does a small spider or even a jellyfish eat that requires enough venom to drop a carthorse?
