  1. Let's be honest, it should be decided by a dance off. Ref can choose the style.
  2. Someone suggested that in the case of a draw after extra time, the winning team should be whichever has fewest cards. I'm sure there's a reason why this isn't done, but I like the idea. I like a clean game.
  3. Well I know you're right, strictly speaking. It's just that nobody can be faultless on every penalty, there have to be errors somewhere, and it's unlucky that it happened on this one.
  4. I don't think it's unfair; them's the rules and everyone takes the same chances by them when they play. I do think it's unsatisfying because it does depend so much more on luck than anything else and there's something a bit simplistic about it coming down to a game of one-on-one beat the goalie. Still, they can't play forever so if it's a total deadlock even after an extra half hour, they've got to find a way to end it one way or another. We have no way of knowing if the wrong line up was picked; for all we know, if they'd done it another way we might have lost every one. I'm very satisfied that Southgate did a better job of managing the team than I would have. But I do think Rashford was incredibly unlucky. But you know, Marcus, you used your influence and money - none of which you were born with - to get a lot of disadvantaged children fed. You're all good.
  5. But it's also a team game. So the fact that it even went down to a shootout in the end is because, as a team, they hadn't secured a win by full time and extra time. Winning or losing, however it comes about, is the cumulative result of an ongoing team effort.
  6. Penalty shootouts are unsatisfying though, because they don't really rely on who played better. They rely so much on luck. Rashford hitting the post was very unfortunate. Still, a fair win is a fair win. Congratulazioni 🇮🇹
  7. My understanding is that when it goes down to a "beat the goalie" like that, the striker usually wins. It would make sense; goalie has to guess to an extent.
  8. Seriously though, how is that not a red card?
  9. They should just have a dance off. (This is Peter Crouch, who endeared himself to the British public forever when a journalist asked him what he would have been if he had not become a footballer, and he replied, "A virgin.")
  10. Oh, some of the responses to that were beyond disgraceful. But there was also this, which I do think captures far more of the public mood than those turboturds who thought attacking a child on the internet was well hard.
  11. They say football is a gentleman's game played by thugs, and rugby is a thugs' game played by gentlemen... It really is a shame that this happens.
  12. I went to school with someone who is now a League One (Division Three, whatever, I can't keep up) footballer and has played for a number of well known teams. He was always very talented athletically and really, really passionate about football. We were all so delighted that he became a professional footballer and not an insurance salesman or something. He's very private and quiet on social media, but he's made numerous public statements against racism and hooliganism in football. He was always a nice kid in school too. I was absolutely crap at anything athletic and he used to give me pointers.
  13. Did you know that a couple of guys from Blur were involved in this song? And they actually filmed it on the same street as the Bittersweet Symphony video that it's parodying? And it got criticised for sounding too much like a hooligan anthem even though that was the entire point? I just love it even more now. Made as a piss take, yet genuinely uplifting and adopted as a real football anthem.
  14. Well obviously I'm supporting the Lions! But it'll be a great game whatever happens, and if we lose, we were beaten by the best. The team has made history by getting to the final. I'm really appalled by the behaviour of a minority of fans. I don't know why football attracts these people more than other sports. They need to eff off into the sea. And I hope whoever shone that laser at the Danish goalkeeper is found and done for assault. This song is underrated.
  15. Curiosity and nostalgia (especially nostalgia) but tbh it's not really keeping me. I'm still glad it's there and quite like the forum, though.
  16. "When I go see Villa, my view is blocked by a concrete pillar...."
  17. I've been moved to listen to a bit of Three Lions. It's all so unexpected and I can't see it lasting much longer.
  18. I think it's a spectrum and everyone falls on it somewhere. Hard not to have any self-interest whatsoever, and wouldn't make you a good person anyway.
