I looked there (I do use Firefox), but it is clicked, and I don't have any exceptions. I'll post a picture next time I see one of them, so you all can enjoy it. I might start using AdBlock, Griffin, thanks for the suggestion, but this is the only ad that bugs me.
  2. Every time I go to a Second Life website, like the forums or the marketplace, this little window pops up in the upper right of my browser that offers me "coupons" for creating my "imaginary avatar" in Second Life. They are really cheesy, cheap, and fake-looking. If I click on one, it takes me to secondlife.com. Are other people seeing these things? Is there a way to turn them off?
  3. Yeah, and some sliders... I wonder whether they actually do anything. I've moved some between 0 and 100 and not seen any difference at all. On the other hand, I have this skin I love. With one shape I have high cheekbones, and with another shape none at all. I've played with EVERY slider that could do something about that, including eye depth, puffy eyes, cheek bones, and what all... but "no joy" as they say in the military.

I don't understand why this bothers people but i'd love to know! It's not a big deal to me. It's a minor irritation. It's nowhere near as bad as someone sending a friend request out of the blue. Usually when someone IMs me like that, I respond in a friendly way, talk to them as if they spoke in local chat, but it bothers me because it seems like a presumption of intimacy. I feel that it's rude, but I don't point it out to them. Just like when someone burps or spits and you ignore it. If there is some reason to be private -- for instance, a crowded venue, or they want to tell me my AO is acting weird, that's one thing. But just to talk? It's like someone is standing too close, touching me. Imagine this: you are standing in RL in a public place and there aren't many people around. Someone calls you on your cell phone, someone you don't know. You say, "Who is this?" and the person says, "I'm the guy in the gray shirt on the corner. See me?" It's not as bad as that, but that's what it's like.
  5. That's pretty good. I especially liked the pregnancy shapes and comments. I wish someone would do a tutorial about the head and face sliders. I have messed with them and not gotten very far, except for obvious stuff.
  6. One the handiest things I've learned is how to break off an IM window and put it in another part of the screen. It often happens that I am busy with some people on one sim and friends come inworld somewhere else and want to talk. So I put my friend's IM window way on the right and I watch local chat on the left. IMs are also pretty handy when you are talking to someone who is new to SL, because when you have to explain seven times how to drag a box from inventory to the ground... well, not everyone wants to hear it. Although you have to explain IMs first, and that seems difficult too... The only thing that bugs me about IMs is when someone I don't know IMs me without having spoken to me in local chat first.
  7. Demo For Life: Wear demo skin (with demo tattoos), demo shape (with big hands and feet), and demo hair (with store sign over head) for at least 3 months Boxing Champion: Wear unboxed outfits only. Gesture Monk: communicate only by using gestures The "Four Hours or Longer" Achievement - wear a freenis always and everywhere
  8. I remember when a friend told me about Second Life. I didn't understand ANYTHING he told me about it. I asked a lot of questions, but it didn't help me understand. What did get through to me was how excited he was about it, and also that it was obviously a secret that he wasn't telling anyone else. That got me in there. I stayed because I misunderstood some of the things he told me, and I went looking day after day for some things that aren't in SL at all...

  11. The problem with changing one way and then the other is that Rule 42 of GUI Design applies: No matter how bad or wrong a design choice is, someone will like it that way.

What makes you think people use Twitter that way? If someone did, no one would follow them. Your post is short enough to be a tweet. If you posted it on Twitter, would that make it silly?
  13. When I google my avatar name, I find that I have: - a secret - a government - a university - a cup (for ice hockey) but then, realizing that these are probably people who are using Victoria as their display name, I google "Victoria Resident" and I find: - "Victoria Resident, Chairman of National Committee..." - "Victoria Resident Detained in Myanmar" - "Victoria Resident Helps Bastrop Families in Need" - "Victoria Resident included in list of disqualified individuals" and I see I'm not the only one with this name.
  14. 1. Doctor Evil finds that reincarnation is both a blessing and a curse. 2. Middle Dog (thinking): I'd like to see a group of CATS pull this off! Ha! And they think they're so smart... 3. Safety tip: When observing the canine fart fetish, be sure to stand upwind, not down. 4. Middle dog says to soldier: "Will you put your silly hand down and get over here? I need one more bending over to complete this tableau vivant." 5. Middle dog: Nobody's going anywhere until we find out who swallowed the general's medal of honor! 6. Middle dog: Buying that book on hypnosis was the best five bucks I ever spent! 7. Middle dog: I better stay in one spot until everything rezzes and I can see what kind of sim this is...
  15. SO! Lag is created by alts with scripted sculpty meshes! Now we know! Just kidding! If lag was really caused by too many alts, there would be lag all the time, everywhere. But let's say, for the sake of argument, that the alts really were the problem and LL decided, "Let's clean up the alt accounts!" -- What would they do? There isn't any way they could tell an "alt" account from a "regular" account, because there isn't any difference. Okay, so it isn't THAT... let's say the problem is that there are too many accounts. Again, if that was the problem there would be lag all the time, everywhere. I've been on sims and no problem whatsoever, while other people complain about the "terrible lag". And often when someone asks, "Is everyone lagging like me?" the answer is usually no from the rest of the people.

  17. It's just my favorite name. I like the Victorian era, particularly writers like Dickens, George Eliot, Thomas Hardy, Henry James... and then on the other hand, I admire Victoria Beckham. I tried in the past to get a Victoria-named avatar, but it seemed that there was already a Victoria for every last name that I tried. Right after I got this name, someone offered me a thousand lindens for the account. Even if it wasn't against the rules, there is no way I would have sold it (especially for such a paltry sum as that!).

  19. Thanks - I still am visiting stores so thanks for the suggestions. I'm spending a lot of time narrowing down all the demos I picked up. Then I want to take some pictures. I've bought a few skins along the way, but I'm not done yet.
  20. A few people mentioned Dutch Touch... I went there and could not figure out what was what. The pictures are tiny, so it's hard to know what I want to try. It says there is a skin sale going on, but most of the merchandise is labeled as makeup or tones. Maybe I'm dumb, but I couldn't make sense of it.
  21. I've found some nice ones at Chain & Vine (http://slurl.com/secondlife/Lotus%20Bleu/128/139/54/) and Filthy (http://slurl.com/secondlife/Red%20Wing/18/101/501/). Something that REALLY surprised me was how different the skins looked in the pictures and on me. The reason is the shapes, but when I was at Filthy I wouldn't have wanted to look like the pictures. Still, I picked the nicest looking skins to try, and they looked great on me.

  24. Thanks, Melita! Adding to my list. I've found some really amazingly beautiful skins so far. It's hard to choose!
