To everyone else, I've visited half the stores so far and found really lovely skins, the kind I was looking for, so thanks! I'm collecting demos, still running through the list.
  2. Marianne Little wrote: Ugly Duck What? That's the shops name. :matte-motes-big-grin-wink: http://fadelei.blogspot.com/ I am not sure if I understand sfumato correct - I have no arts degree. But I would guess hand painted skins are closer to this than photosourced skins? They have a more soft quality IMHO. Yeah, I wasn't sure about using that word, but I also wasn't sure that "soft" was enough. But I think everyone's been right on the money in their recommendations, as far as I can so far. I searched for pictures that I could show but in the end figured it would work out better if people just went by their own feeling of what it meant. Yes, maybe painted skins would be better, like an airbrushed effect?
  3. I have received gifts meant for people whose display name is Victoria, so I know for a fact that display names can mix people up.
  4. I'm looking for a female skin where the makeup is very soft and has a sfumato look: no hard edges, very gradual blending of shades. Does anyone have any suggestions?

  6. If someone is more than 20 meters taller than you and you stand next to them, shouldn't they be out of your chat range?
  7. I love the hair I'm wearing in my avatar picture, but it does one weird thing: sometimes when I zoom out, or see my avatar from a little distance, it looks like my scalp is showing through my hair at the crown of my head. Then, when I zoom in to adjust it, it looks fine and the hair is covering my scalp. Is this something I need to fix, or is it just some kind of rezzing problem? (or...?)
  8. I bought some flip-flops that were quite nice, but made for very big feet. When I made them smaller, my feet showed very plainly underneath, but all boxy and angular. (Why didn't they show when the flip-flops were bigger? Weird.) I tried editing the foot shape, but that didn't help. I couldn't make it smaller, and my feet were already size zero. Then I looked in the library and found some alpha layers. One of them made my feet disappear (yay!) but also made some of my ankle disappear as well (boo!), so my foot was disconnected from my leg. I tried to edit the alpha shape, but only succeeded in making myself disappear up to my middle. So I took it off and gave up. What can I do?
  9. Maybe what's needed is a two-path signup. The signup page could have a little text link in a corner that would be easy to miss. That way, most people would go the one-name route. But if they saw the link ("Advanced signup" or something like that) it could first warn people that although they get more options, it could be more confusing. Then they get a page where they can choose a name, and make it easy to test for availablilty. AND a button to jump back to the easy signup.
  10. JohnnyMercury wrote: I have often wondered why new users make up stupid alpha-numeric names. Just make up a first and last name and forget about the space between the two. Newer viewers don't show the "Resident" part so all is cool. What bugs me is Chat showing Display Names along with Legacy Names. Since I don't use Display Names, i respond to the legacy name in Chat. They do it because the sign-up process leads you to believe that you are the only one who will see your username.
  11. I wish there was a page that showed the threads that were last updated and only showed each thread ONCE.
  12. You could look at the SL fashion blogs for some ideas.
  13. I think I get it what Lyra and Melita are saying: some of the sliders have a simple and obvious effect, like head size. Others, even if they have a scale from 0-100, are much more subtle, and their effect might be invisible if some other slider isn't set in the right way. One thing that would be really useful is if I could have the image of someone else standing next to me while I edit my shape. I've thought that moer than once, because when I'm standing alone in a sandbox, it's this little person in a vacuum. Sometimes I have to stop because I have no idea what I'd look like standing next to another person. It is a lot of fun. I've decided to stop shopping for a shape and instead struggle with my own until I love the way it looks. About Marianne and Lanas windlight comments, it is good to know that I can see myself in as good a light as Edit Shape uses, but I can't ask other people to change their settings for me. I'm glad there is an explanation of why it's so different, but I think I will try to look good in the ordinary light in SL. It's kind of like two mirrors in my RL house: the one in the bathroom shows me (maybe) better than I look, and the one by the front door is a reality check (I hope).
  14. Thanks, I wondered about that. I spent so much time fiddling with the sliders, too!
  15. Yeah, I'm not worried about the vendor picture looking different. Angle, lighting, knowing how to take good pictures... I really want to know about shapes, about making faces. I can take some pictures. (I'm using Firestorm, since you ask.)
  16. I bought a lovely skin, but don't like the shape that came with it. It's the face. It doesn't look as amazing as the picture. Still, I love the skin, so I went hunting for a shape with a better face. I don't know how many shape stores I've visited in the past few days, but it seems I keep seeing the same two faces over and over: one with a long chin and one with a small chin. I tried to make a face myself and found a very weird thing: while in "Edit Shape" my face looked beautiful, but as soon as I came out of it, my face looked all puffy and fat. Also, the profile looked great in "Edit Shape" but very harsh otherwise. Have other people found this? How can you deal with it? And do you have any hints for working on faces?
  17. I bought a nice shape and skin and hair and eyes and outfit, all from stores you'd know. The thing is, I never really rez unless I rebake. Then a few minutes later, my whole body goes muddy and gray. If I wait, eventually everything rezzes except my lips and shoulders. What can I do?

You'd be better off introducing NEW starter avatars, because if you did what you said, you'd be changing the avatars a lot of people are using already, and they might not like that. That's not how it works. When a new user recieves one of the starter avatars, either upon creating an account in Second Life, or by getting one from the Linden Library, they recieve a copy of that avatar. Any changes made to the starters in the Library or given to new accounts would not affect those who already have copies in their own inventories. that makes sense. Carry on, then!

In these past 9 months or so, he has gotten 3 partnering requests. Really? My single name Quinn alt, who has only ever logged in twice, has never received a partner request. Now she's going to feel all unloved. :matte-motes-crying: I went to look at your profile to compare it to Chris'. They are not much different except for the partner (I thought he was kidding!)
  21. Opensource Obscure wrote: I hope everybody reading here know that through Me > Preferences > General one can choose to see Display Names only, Usernames only, or both of them. Not in the Marketplace! When you give a gift, just the account name pops up. Maybe if the profile popped up, it would help .
  22. Chris Norse wrote: So far they have been different accounts. The last account was a month old and had nothing in the profile except the name and rez date. Of course I accepted. I also responded in the acceptance message that I wanted to have a large family of prim babies. I'm glad you didn't disappoint them.
