The SSP thread alerted me to the fact that the new WelcomeHub areas are open. I thought it might need its own thread.

Looks as if WelcomeHub Linden Homes will be connected to Bellisseria by rail.

SL would not accept SLURLS and I had wrong info.

The whole thing is so well done! It's probably lucky for me that this wasn't around 15 years ago when I first joined SL, because I would have probably never logged off.  This is excellent marketing for Second Life and fun for SL avatars old and young alike!

Enjoying the music in Motown finally; took me a while to realize I needed a HUD, to find the HUD and get it running.  I am not media-aware enough to know why the HUD is being used but it is working for me now.  I saw 140 in this region a while ago; 130 now.

It's nice that it connects with the rest of Second Life without needing to figure out teleporting or know places. Though I hope the train station will get a train rezzer, as newbies won't have trains or likely know how to use the marketplace yet.

The little activities, like firing yourself out of a cannon, are things people can do before they know anybody. It makes it more interesting for people.

The shopping area is a real shopping area and has some gifts for those with no money. No more teleporting newbies under the stairs in that ancient mall.

It's a pity that Motown doesn't have a regular music stream. The hud can have issues and it means everyone hears different music.

I would love to be shot out of a cannon; must try that.  Why would everyone hear different music through the HUD?  This media item is new to me, sorry!

I'm impressed, this is a very nice complex! A few observations.

> The sandbox is not just for Premium, anyone can use it.  It's basically an extension of the main Welcome Hub, and has basic building instruction posters that point to knowledge base pages, as well as a classroom area

> The rail link to LogLand dead-ends at the station.  The station has a rez zone, and I, too, really hope they put a cable car rezzer there.

> There are 2 2048 parcels in the Linden Homes region, and one of them looks like it will be for the "Ranch" theme.  Note that all the plants around that parcel are named "LH HUB <plant name>" .  I see lots of LH-HUB-Aspen and Oak trees, which are new to me. All the parcels for already existing themes have normally named plants for that theme.  The 2nd 2048 parcel does not have vegetation around it yet.

> The Skill Gaming region looks like Vegas 🤑 I just visited a different Skill Gaming region to see what they're like, and that one was a complete bore.  This actually looks fun.

> Big Laser Tag layout in the Community region!  Get a team together!

> The cinema region has a huge buffet of many many munchies and seems to be showing WAARHEID, an actual feature-length SL scifi movie by Huckleberry Hax.  There are also posters for a couple of mole mockumentaries.

> Each of the 9 regions is surrounded by water :) , with bridges to adjacient regions. Will there be inner tubes for the swim inclined?  Also, each region has a rezzer for a little air taxi/ferry that can take you to any of other 8 welcome regions.

I love all the Welcome Hub regions except the Social Casino. I still think that's a predatory concept that is not a good fit with Linden Lab. There was also a strange bot in the Sandbox region today, standing right next to the entrance from that region into the Social Casino region. At first I thought it was a Linden greeter bot, but it's not. It's owned by a resident.

I'm concerned that people might use the sandbox to rez objects to trick unsuspecting newbies out of their money or passwords.

A bot could say for instance, "Hello. Would you like to purchase tokens to play in the Casino?" or "If you'd like to get free tokens to play in the Casino, go to this website and enter your SL user name and password." The proximity of the sandbox to the Casino seems like a big potential problem to me.

Maybe the new regions are G because they are planning on capturing the pre-teen and teen markets again? With the mobile viewer, that may no longer be a pipedream.

Regardless, they have built a rich entry point that showcases segments of SL - and will no longer leave new residents wondering why they bothered downloading the viewer. Good job Linden Labs!

And no mention of mainland anywhere I could see.

Mainland is there.. it is just subtle. There is a big board that says Land in second life. It is in the Linden Homes Demo region. It talks about the difference between mainland, renting, and belli homes. the main sign links you to this page: https://secondlife.com/land

I think the regions are "G" because it is a central hub for all of SL, including those who are logging into SL for the very first time, as well as those who are 16-18 and can only access G regions, as well as those of us who have been around for a long time. G rating is the least common denominator -- all of us have the ability to enter G regions whether or not we have set our preferences for higher maturity ratings.

I think this 9 region SL Hub could easily become a main hangout for those who dont own their own home or land in SL. It is very well done and represents a lot (but not everything) that SL is about.

The one thing it is missing that I would like to see more of is a set of portals to take you to other areas in SL such as scifi or fantasy RP, adult regions, places to explore such as recreations of museums or art galleries, nature areas and zoos, etc etc.

But I have to say that overall this is an incredible area and they did a great job with it!

I wouldn't say sex is completely out at the new Welcome Hub. Did you see the giant naked manikins flanking the entrance to the shopping region?

Btw, I realize us white folk burn more easily, but I think the black lady should have a stylish hat or wrap too.

that is the ugliest thing ever, why would they add these mannequins

I think mannequins are supposed to represent shopping for women's clothing, which has to be a huge part of the SL economy.

p.s

I didn't find a single clothing store in the Shopping region, so naked mannequins seems very appropriate.

I'd think the "naked mannequins" should look more self-conscious, trying to cover up like a couple of Eve's who just ate apples. If the are nakie and oh so confident, why buy clothes?

At least new users will recognize themselves in the mannequins, no nipples and all.

And then again: Giant naked mannequins  is the SL wordless sign for, "They've got nothing in my size."

Well I remember the xstreet mall area. This might be a new era of shopping. SL had a lot of malls back then Like Luna Oaks Mall, one that still left, others ones are gone but statues still exist. The future of shopping is in the works we will just have to see. I know they brought up those sl starter mesh bodys maybe at SL20B.
