Type second life into Youtube, a lot of it is news/videos from 10 years ago, or people recording their adventures of trolling in SL. It kind of has gained a reputation as a boring and outdated game for losers, creeps, weirdos and or people who take the game too seriously and literally think it's their second life.

Nope. This vid for example is the most popular video about Second Life, with almost 8 million views..the popular impression of Second Life seems to be that it's this weird old game with bad graphics, odd people and creepy perverts. And tbh that impression isn't too far off 😄

Now, I don't have anything against furries as such -- I have long had a dragon and some other animal avatars and now have several Dinkies. My tenants are furries. Furries are thought to be the soul of SL

But it isn't even just "NSFW" and graphic furry sex, it's just furries period be associated with SL.

...

it's still mainly furries associated with Second Life, the search term. It's not like YOUR search of "second life" on Twitter is going to produce fairies and unicorns and rainbows and no furries, so let's not be children here.

...

But this topic veered off into the "UNSAFE" furries not filtered out. And ultimately, there's a different, larger issue that it's furries IN GENERAL in the search

Why does this reek of the same energy as people who say "Now I'm not x (racist, sexist, homophobic, etc) BUT--" 🤔

You're basically saying I have nothing against them but god forbid they show up in search. Would the same topic be brought up if the Second Life keyword search, for example, brought up a lot of pictures of avatars of a specific race or orientation instead of furries? (Hell you even blame Russians like they're some kind of infestation rather than people.)

I feel like there's a bigger underlying problem here than the pure NSFW angle as you literally said in your second post that "it's just furries period". You realize one of the draws of SL is that you can be anything, right? It's only as "serious" as you make it. I'm pretty sure people would have the exact same opinions they do now even if you replaced all of the nsfw furries with nsfw humans because it boils down to the same thing-- uncanny pixels hip thrusting at each other.

As for the actual keyword itself: I actively enjoy furry content of the tame variety, cute art and well crafted suits and the like, yet that keyword search brought up mostly human avatars for me and nothing "graphic" beyond toplessness and tasteful nudes, all of which were marked NSFW anyway. In fact, the only avatar I saw in the search with embiggened boobage was... Surprise surprise, a human.

And this is all coming from me, a furry, who actively has a hard time finding a community I feel welcomed at because I try to veer away from the  whole "SL = Sex" thing. While it can get overwhelming at times in-world, I don't have an actual PROBLEM with it just because it's not my thing. Seems the OP here is trying to use the sex and kink angle as a way to basically say furries being associated with SL is a bad thing and needs to be covered up, as if seeing pixel humans in place of them is going to make any difference to the demographic SL wouldn't interest anyway...

You're not alone in that.

Welcome to the internet. I remember when the internet was first getting started about 1994 AOL days and people on the news were talking about the porn and such on the internet.

1994?  Heck, I started in the late 80's! The internet has always been for porn.

Damn, beat me to it. Twitter’s algorithm shows you more of the types of things you’ve already been looking at....hm.

No wonder I got several beach vacation posts unrelated to SL (just labeled ‘living my second life’) along with some shopping & landscape photos. 😉

I used the link and yep, I did get a few various furry pix mixed in with a whole lot of everything else but everything that popped up for me was G rated besides one account posting multiple photos of sexy furry stuff (without a #NSFW tag) but easy enough to just flag the posts and block that account.

I think for those of us who get tired and fed up of just seeing SL pix we don’t relate to, posting more of what we DO want to see and using good hashtags is always a great idea. I think the #NSFW tag is underused, but the people who don’t feel they need to use it are usually ones I’ll avoid anyway so that’s its own kind of convenient marker.

I’m not disagreeing with the general impression that many people have of SL, deserved or no...but what you find in web and app searches is quite skewed by where you are logged in, what tracking and privacy settings you have enabled and other factors already mentioned. One would have to do several searches using a VPN and a fresh browser install with all the tracking features disabled to get a kind of ‘blank slate’ impression of a search that’s not skewed by anyone’s habits and preferences. My screenshot is of my searches while logged in to Google and a YouTube premium account.

This does not have to do with cookies, settings or tracking. I was just sorting the Second Life videos by most views. That video I posted was the most popular video about second life. Other popular videos are similarly weird. Don't shoot the messenger, it's just the general impression a lot of outsiders have of this game is not entirely positive.

So... are you in the odd or the pervert category? 🙃

Probably the weird category, because my avatar is an alien. I think I'd also fit in the troll category. Hbu?
