  1. When I first asked why it was unfortunate my brain had jumped to interpersonal disputes, not business disputes which are a problem.
  2. Where is the failure here? You should spend a few days at a Gateway and observe what goes on. Or even better apply to be a helper. I don't know about all of them but most have a vetting and training process for the helpers.
  3. Those I would consider legitimate reasons. Yes, very difficult situations.
  4. Why is it unfortunate? Actually I think it is a good thing that they don't. Violations of the TOS and CS should be handled but beyond that, why should they get involved. This isn't Kindergarten. Though sometimes the way people react you would think that is where they think they are. "Teacher, Tommy won't stop staring at me...." Reading some people's Profiles, that is probably what their AR's sound like. I hope I am not sounding cynical but there is an awful lot of this.
  5. Besides the Moderators and Helpers the Gateways have Managers who oversee everything. So unless it is a Manager who is doing this speak to a Manager. Then above the Manager(s) there will be the head(s) of the sponsoring group. I do wonder about this broad brush with which you are painting the situation. From what I know of the Gateways they are very patient with people and don't ban on the first offense or even second offense (Violations of the TOS and CS). I am not aware of any Gateways that have rules in addition to the TOS and CS.
  6. I remember the AFK sex rooms when I first started SL. And how much fun they were. NOT. That was back before camping to game traffic was outlawed in SL. You could park a female Avatar in one and make a couple of Linden Dollars an hour. I don't think I ever saw a male Avatar parked for a lady's pleasure. All I could think at the time was how boring. I could get more response out of a blow up doll. And while I would never compare anything in SL to the heinous crime of rape in RL there still is the psychological aspect of it in SL. And it seems to me that it is usually men who down play it, especially in RL. Not always but usually. So personally I won't discount any ones reaction to this.

  9. Phillip Linden Rosedale made an interesting comment recently about the Lindex. He credits one reason for stability in the Lindex with the fact Linden Dollars are treated like a currency and not a commodity.

  11. I love the wardrobe. And I use it for more than just my clothes. It took me a bit to get it done but I have furnishings, landscape items, etc in it also. It is really useful.

  14. Sometimes I will have fun for a couple of minutes reporting key word abuse. If I am searching for pants I should not be seeing bras.
  15. I was a bit rushed when I started this, I certainly have more to say and will be saying but is kind of past my bedtime. But I will preface the following with this. I do want to see SL grow and do want to see LL prosper so SL continues. New user retention has been a forever problem for SL. But in my fifteen years here I don't know a single person (if it has happened) that LL has asked, "What has kept you here?" When I first started SL I had a computer that was barely capable of running SL. But that really did nor factor into my staying. What factored in was my initial experiences. There were some things that could have said to me it was a waste BUT there were other experiences that made me feel welcome and at home.

What is interesting is this in the policy: "Linden Lab routinely looks at search results, and will treat use of bots to gain an unfair search advantage as an abuse issue.   18. I am certainly not an expert in this but I am going to question this statement. While is is true the simulators are running at 45 fps (unless they are lagged) not everything runs on the server, for instance animations. And we also need to take into account how the human eye sees. I will refer back to two statements by Masami Kuramoto in this old Forum thread: " Myth #1: Second Life cannot render more than 45 FPS. Fact: Sim/physics FPS and client FPS are unrelated. The viewer will interpolate between simulator updates, predicting updates before they happen and rendering intermediate frames to keep things smooth. This is precisely why avatars start walking through walls or beyond simulator boundaries whenever there is sim lag or network congestion. "Overkill" is any framerate above the monitor's refresh rate (e.g. 60 FPS on LCD/TFT screens)." "It's not about distinguishing individual frames but about perception of flicker. There are two types of photoreceptor cells in the human eye, rods and cones, and their flicker fusion threshold is different: 15 Hz for rod cells, and 60 Hz for cone cells. These are average values; some individuals will see flicker up to 75 Hz and higher. The slow response time of photoreceptor cells is the reason why we see fast moving objects blurred. If a fan rotates faster than the eye's flicker fusion threshold, its blades blur into a transparent disc because the eye can no longer distinguish between the blades and the background; it will see both at the same time. Motion pictures run at 24 FPS; much slower than the flicker fusion rate. They get away with it because movie cameras expose frames long enough to include a considerable amount of motion blur. The faster an object moves, the softer its edges will be rendered on screen. This reduces the strobe effect and makes the experience bearable. In Second Life each frame is rendered with zero seconds of motion blur; it looks like it was shot at infinite FPS. That's OK as long as nothing is moving faster than one pixel per frame. Once you have objects moving faster than that, the strobe effect becomes fully visible along their edges. This strobe effect is what triggers epileptic seizures in some individuals. And it is stronger in peripheral vision. If you focus on your avatar while turning it around at 45 FPS, you can easily see it, no meth required. So there are two ways to eliminate the strobe effect: add motion blur to each frame, or render frames faster than the eye's flicker fusion rate. In the latter case, motion blur will appear naturally

"At the #week #23 TPVD Developer Meeting (notes here), it was indicated that LL are “leaning” towards removal of the non-Advanced Lighting Model (ALM) (aka “forward rendering”) rendering path from the viewer, leaving just ALM rendering (aka deferred rendering”)." This really concerns me. There are places that were built by people who did not have ALM enabled and were ignorant of how bad some things looked with ALM enabled that they did which look wonderful with it off. And what about things like shadows? Maybe I don't care if I don't see shadows. I don't begrudge any one who does like shadows but personally I don't really care. Is removing the option to have ALM on or off a good thing or not?
  21. So I got to thinking my Thank You to everyone may have sounded a bit dismissive which was certainly not my intent. There was a reason for my question. Recently there have been some major performance enhancements by LL and now adopted by Firestorm which I use. And I am hearing many comments about increased FPS from peoples. But along with this has been introduced a function (to be found in preferences if you are on the most current release) called "vsync." Now I am really not qualified to talk about this but the gist of this function as I get it is to match your FPS to the refresh rate of your Monitor. So in the latest viewer releases this is on by default. And so some people are asking why all of the sudden their FPS are being limited. And I have heard some folks bragging about how they without it on can get in excess of 200 fps. It brought to mind that old thread. That: A. Your monitor can only process so much info (the refresh rate) and B. The human eye (and mind) can only process so much info. So I leave it to people who know more than me to comment on this because I think it is a valid discussion.
