  1. It is only available to a select group of people to develop for so I would not use the word "open" with it. (I know, semantics).
  2. I do understand the need to make the initial introduction to mesh bodies simple and easy to understand for new Residents. Even though I had been in SL for many years when mesh bodies were first introduced I was a little intimidated by them. I suspect only a small number of Merchants will sign up. They do need to think about ROI. Many continue to cut back on the number of bodies that they rig for. The ROI has to be there for the time that they spend rigging.
  3. Will this be made available to all the Residents? What has become of the idea of "Your World, Your Imagination." It no longer is when you begin to restrict creation of any content in Second Life to a select elite group of users. This is not the Tao of Second Life that I have known for over 16 years now. Not once has my right to create ever been restricted before.
  4. I believe that their Discord is by invitation only. And probably for the same reason that they do not have an In World Viewer Support group. It would probably quickly turn into a zoo.
  5. Thanks everyone for your replies. My computer is a custom built, my son built it for me. It's around 3 1/2 years old now. Most of it's components were bought end of year clearance sails. With graphics set between high and ultra with ALM off at a club with 20 to 25 Avatars present I will still get 45 fps so I really can not complain about that. I do have a little trouble with texture thrashing but following Firestorms suggestion to raise TextureFetchConcurrency it has pretty well eliminated that. A whole new system will be out of the question for a while. My thinking has moved to if I get a nicer GPU now when I can afford other upgrades I can just continue using the better card. So it's time for me to start watching for sales now.
  6. Recently I have been considering upgrading my GPU. But let me start out by saying that overall I am happy with my computer's performance with SL. Until I turn on ALM. And then if I turn on Shadows my performance dips even further. My current specs are: CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 2700X Eight-Core Processor (3693.06 MHz) Memory: 16311 MB (Used: 2767 MB) Concurrency: 16 OS Version: Microsoft Windows 10 64-bit (Build 19045.3208) Graphics Card Vendor: NVIDIA Corporation Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 3GB/PCIe/SSE2 Graphics Card Memory: 3072 MB As I looked at GPU's and looking at benchmarks I could see to make a real difference in I'd have to make (for me at least) a significant investment. But then looking at specs I made the discovery I would need to upgrade my power supply from 550 watts to 650 watts, adding about another Hundred dollars to the price tag pushing me over budget. So I while I know I am not stating a specific dollar amount, to begin to make a significant difference in SL what would I need to upgrade to? I will add this one last thought, I am thinking ahead to when PBR goes live in SL and it has been said the ALM will not be optional.
  7. After further reading on this subject I have decided to put my opinion "on hold" for now until LL figures something out. Coincidentally the subject came up in this weeks Content Creators User Group with Linen Lab today. From Inara Pey's notes on the meeting: " ARC – Avatar Render Cost Intended to be a means of calculating the overall cost of rendering individual avatars by the viewer, ARC has long been acknowledged as inaccurate. Currently, the project to adjust both ARC calculations and the actual cost of rendering in-world objects to make them more reasonable – Project ARCTan – remains inactive." I won't paste the rest of Inara's notes here, they are somewhat lengthy, but they are definitely worth reading. https://modemworld.me/2023/07/21/2023-week-29-sl-ccug-meeting-summary-senra-gltf-etc/
  8. Perhaps the horse has been out of the barn too long but shouldn't Merchants be required to post the complexity of the clothes and other wearables they sell on the marketplace. All of us pay attention to the Land Impact of rezzables we buy. Why not the impact of the clothes we buy also? Most of us live by the mantra, "No demo, no sale." But beyond checking how good clothes actually look by demoing, how many of us look at the complexity before we buy? Having to list the complexity would bring more awareness to the issue and also finally embarrass some merchants into being more serious about optimizing their offerings. It could make for a better SL for all of us.
  9. I have for a long time advocated that Merchants be required to post the complexity of their clothes in their MP Listings. It could serve two factors. One, over all bring more awareness to the issue of complexity and Two, embarrass some creators into better optimizing their offerings. It has been a long time mantra with mesh clothes, "No Demo, No Buy." One day it occurred to me that I should be checking more than just the fit when I demoed but the complexity also. I will skip that pair of shoes that raised my complexity by 30,000 points.
  10. I was wondering the same. All I could find is a very old list. It's over ten years old. https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Community_Gateway
  11. I am not aware of how LL is currently handling things. Is there somewhere they have posted their current take on the issue? I am not particularly tickled with the way the whole situation went. There are bots that serve very useful functions. My landlord uses two for Estate mgt. There are also people who provide useful information like Tyche Sheperd with their Grid Survey report. There are a couple of other people who use bots that provide nice snapshots of what is going on in Second Life. Then there are dozens of others that hop from region to region and no one knows what they are about. And Bonnie Bots. They posted information about me (or I should say about my account) on the open Web that normally would only be visible to some one logging into SL. That action I objected to. Nor do I want these unknown bots passing through my home. It is those who abused bots that brought the trouble down upon themselves,
  12. I do not know LL's position on this but unregistered scripted agents should be a bannable offense. If it acts like a Bot, looks like a bot, smells like a bot it more than likely is a bot.
  13. If they are properly registered scripted agents they shouldn't be there. If they have not, LL needs to turn off access by bots to the welcome areas. Or they need to give mentors a means to recognize and then boot a scripted agent.
  14. There was a certain ex-Linden who squashed a couple of ideas under the guise of the Shared Experience doctrine. Personally I felt that he was just using it as an excuse. So I sometimes wonder about the doctrines application.
  15. A TPV could do it but it would more than likely be disallowed by LL under the Shared Experience doctrine. The effects in the videos you posted are awesome. I do however wonder about continuity across multiple Regions in places like the Blake Sea.
  16. For the record, rezzing to last location for a No Copy items was disabled in Firestorm and whichever other TPV's used it a very long time ago. If I recall correctly they had already made the decision to disable that even before LL mandated that they remove it.
  17. Possible is one thing. Practical would be a whole different matter. I am thinking it would be graphically very intensive. You have to remember that unlike games you preload on your computer, everything in SL is happening in real time.
  18. There actually is a lot to be said for that. There were three things that really changed the face of SL. Mesh was one of them. It allowed people who had no real interest or involvement in Second Life to come in and take money out of the Economy with no need to put anything back in. Almost simultaneous with that was the growth of the Marketplace. The shopping experience in SL just about vanished. Pretty much all the Malls vanished. I knew many people for whom shopping with friends was a fun experience. I enjoyed window shopping with my girl friends. We'd be helping each other choose outfits. Also the Malls acted as anchors for many clubs. So there was that social aspect tied to it also. The third was Linen Homes. It is not a good position to be in when your Supplier also becomes your Competitor. My first Land Lord owned about three full Regions. He was an excellent Land Lord and provided added service value to his rentals. He was a 'go to' person if I had a question about something. His rentals were excellent for new people starting out. But with new people being enticed into Linden Homes his business started drying up and with a reduced ROI it was no longer worth his time.
  19. I wouldn't hand the Mentors the ban hammer. But LL is making an investment in this program. I hope that investment includes continuing support for the Mentors. If a Mentor sees a problem they should be able to get quick response from LL to deal with it. Personal incident: Several years ago I was taking a new person to see the Ivory Tower of Primitives. A few adjacent parcels were under griefer attack with self replicating objects with pornographic images and the region was lag bombed. I filed an abuse report. Two and a half days later the mess had not been cleaned up. I messaged Torley Linden expressing how embarrassing it was to take a new person there. Within thirty minutes it was completely cleaned up. At the Welcome Hubs quick response is needed.
  20. If LL gets the new mentor program right it should make a huge difference. They also need the boldness to clean out the riff raff that hang round some of the welcome center. There should be zero tolerance for these idiots. I do think there is a factor that comes into play for new people. Their success in starting out is proportional to their curiosity. I am not sure exactly what prompted me to do this but when I first arrived at Ahern one of the first things I asked one of the first people I met was, "Show me your favorite place." And that set the tone for my early days in SL despite the fact I owned a brick for a computer at the time. I learned quickly and had an enjoyable start. eta:puncuation
  21. Not just his recent articles. I have read him on and off since 2007 and everything he writes has always been tainted and slanted by his personal opinions. While he has been around a long time I would not use the phrase "pillar of our community" to describe him. I may have a go at reading his book but like you I suspect it will piss me off also.
  22. I can't wait to see it. It could be destined to become a cult classic like the Great Lebowski.
