Will the Second Life Viewer run on Apple OSX 10.7 Lion?
Paladin Pinion replied to Loki Eliot's question in Viewers
No idea, but I'd be surprised if it didn't work. Most existing apps run fine and SL shouldn't be any different -- theoretically, anyway. The apps that will break are very old ones that are still running under Rosetta. Rosetta goes away in Lion. I have an ancient accounting program I'm going to have to upgrade. -
The ability to rez temp objects depends in part on how busy the server is. If it is too busy, you get lag and temp objects do not behave properly. If an avatar is in the vicinity and experiences this kind of lag, their brain processes slow down as well in order to compensate, giving them the impression that all animations and activity are happening at normal speed. This is an automatic self-preservation reaction that emits from the hind-brain, something you as the sim owner cannot control. Most of us have seen the same time-slowing effect when exposed to extreme stress or fear situations. If the person tries to shop at the marketplace after this brain-lag process has occured, residual time effects may still be active and will be applied to all marketplace functions. The person reacts with the marketplace slowly, their responses are slow, and the cumulative effect is that they can no longer click rapidly on several items; in fact, in extreme cases they are no longer capable of impulse purchases at all. In the most severe cases, the lagged brain actually prevents them from noticing that some items are even for sale. To correct the problem, make sure that your sim (and all sims any avatar may visit) are running smoothly. For best results, leave the sim entirely empty, which will ensure a very fast and immediate user experience.

problem with newer SL viewer
Paladin Pinion replied to Eirene Floresby's topic in Second Life Viewer
I saw the same thing last night while testing the new viewer. But if I waited a while the sculpts eventually loaded. Sometimes it took quite a long time. I believe the new viewer deleted the cache, since everything had to reload all over again when I logged in. Once everything was re-cached, things pretty much went back to normal. -
Minimum requirements for shadows, etc???
Paladin Pinion replied to Alazarin Mondrian's topic in Second Life Viewer
I had to turn it off too. My framerate went from 60-75 fps to about 12. Not worth it except for snapshots or an occasional look around. -
Delivery failures increase over the June 11/12 weekend
Paladin Pinion replied to Arwen Serpente's topic in Merchants
Just as a data statistic, I've never had a failed delivery on any product I sell, ever. From what I've read here, I'm probably lucky. More data: I only sell a few things, they sell at a casual but steady rate, and my Magic Box is on a private estate that almost never needs to be restarted. I suspect it's my lower volume of sales that makes me lucky. I don't think my Magic Box ever acquires a queue. I'm looking forward to the new inventory transfer mechanism regardless, I think that will solve a lot of issues for everyone. -
Searching for peace & quiteness
Paladin Pinion replied to Finrod Ghennyn's topic in General Discussion
My solution was to rent. You can get a minimum-sized parcel for very little (about $7 a month or so where I am.) If you don't put a huge permanent structure there, you'll have enough prims to do some building and all the scripting you like. I've been renting for almost 3 years and I'm happy with the arrangement. Shop around a bit, you'll want a reliable landlord who's been around for a long time and won't cut out on you. I have one of those -- ask if you want a lead. Another big advantage is that you can control your environment, your visitors, and your surroundings. There's plenty of peace where I live. -
There is no privacy in SL. Anyone can see anything, and depending on the viewer they use, there is often no way to tell. It's only pixels, you know.

Without my glasses, I can't even view it with perspective. -
Do we really need a rating system in the Marketplace?
Paladin Pinion replied to Chelsea Malibu's topic in Merchants
I haven't received a single rating for any product since the new marketplace started. I guess no news is good news, but you're right, there is no impetus for anyone to write unless they are angry and need to vent. One thing that would prevent the non-delivery rants would be if ratings were not allowed until 24 hours after purchase. That would give most items enough time to be delivered, or for customers to contact the seller, before they feel they need to take out their frustrations in a rant review. -
Stop being so laggy, people!
Paladin Pinion replied to Paul Hexem's topic in General Discussion Forum
Kasya Sciavo wrote: Then I consider it most prudent for you to convince LL to ban all such prim heavy things at once. They should not allow the sale of any such things if that is - which of course it is not - the sole cause of lag in SL. They won't ban what you can buy, but I understand the plan is to limit script usage per avatar as soon as the proper tools are in place. Better go shopping for low-lag stuff. -
Unethical NONconsensual experimentation on SL
Paladin Pinion replied to Luena Sangria's topic in General Discussion Forum
Luena Sangria wrote: Their stonewalling appears to be indicative of something - they have not investigated the SL part, they haven't even stopped the "harassers" from rerouting my internet at home, etc. Unless you downloaded some kind of software that resets your DNS hosts file, it isn't possible for an outside party to "reroute" your internet. You'd do better to run a virus checker. -

It's usually okay, but the advice to keep the bottom of the Mac off a table is good. There are a number of stands available. That said, my older MacBook doesn't rev up its fans that way, so it may be that your graphics settings are too high. You could try setting them a little lower in preferences and see if that helps. I generally run graphics on High instead of Ultra. Unless you're doing photography, the difference isn't going to hurt the SL experience.

I just tried 3 names that would not show up in the old search, and they all showed up in this one. Based on this extensive scientific sampling, I'd say the new search is a vast improvement. Until the new search is integrated, I will be using the web test interface instead of the existing function in the current viewer. It's very nice to actually find what you're looking for. The layout is much, much better too.

If you had things copied, were the copiers banned?
Paladin Pinion replied to Pamela Galli's topic in Merchants
Pamela Galli wrote: I have received an email from LL and this is their official policy: "Regarding your request that we terminate the Resident account(s). Residents that continually re-post content that is subject to a valid DMCA may be terminated under our repeat infringer policy." There you have it. Repeatedly. I wonder if they make a distinction between real-world stuff and SL stuff. They might have been afraid I'd sue them in RL. Most residents here won't go to that much trouble. But who knows what goes on in the higher eschalons. -
If you had things copied, were the copiers banned?
Paladin Pinion replied to Pamela Galli's topic in Merchants
I think the guy who ripped Mote and resold it on the Marketplace was banned. At least, he is no longer available in search, nor are the other 2 names I submitted in my DMCA report. If their disappearance means they were really kicked off the grid, then it happened almost immediately, within a couple of days. It may depend on how "serious" LL thinks the infringement is. That's not saying that all infringers aren't equally at fault, but in my case I had more than one level of copyright abuse. It wasn't just that they stole and resold my software, but also that they used my marketing images, my marketing text copy, my company logo, and they were misrepresenting themselves as part of my (real world) software company. They also screen-shot my copyright notice from the software, added their own text to it and then put it up as a marketplace image. Now that I'm a little distanced from it, the stupidity astounds me. But LL took care of it pretty quickly. -
SL is pretty demanding on graphics cards, and viewer 2 has introduced some features that require even more from the card. It sounds like you are out of luck with viewer 2, but if viewer 1 still runs for you, you can stick with that. You may also be able to replace your video card with a newer one, but be careful to check compatibility before you do that. I'm not sure older Macs can use the newer high-powered cards.

It isn't silks or medieval, but SF Design has a whole men's department with very well done clothing and accessories.

This sounds more like a database glitch than an inventory deletion. If the database isn't responding with the correct info, items will seem to have disappeared. When the database gets corrected, or when communication with it is fixed, the items will reappear again. I doubt it has anything to do with the new inventory system in testing.

That's odd. I frequently browse the messages here without logging in and I've never seen that. Could it have been a temporary thing?

Marketplace Demos Should Be in Separate Sub-Category
Paladin Pinion replied to Shauna Vella's topic in Merchants
I haven't actually tried it, but if the marketplace is using a google-type search, it might work to type "-demo" into the search field. That would eliminate any item with "demo" in the item's searchable fields. Anyone know if it's using the google algorithms? I believe in-world search does. -
I thought I'd give it a shot so I applied, and received a "sorry, you weren't selected" email a few days ago. LL said there were thousands of applicants and they only had six slots for this test run. I was surprised when I saw today that the first item was a dress. You'd think they'd choose something less gender-specific for their "wide audience" appeal.
