  3. And speaking of lyrics that are hard to understand, I had never heard the song "Whine Up" until J.R. Martinez and Karina Smirnoff danced to it for their Freestyle in "Dancing With the Stars" in 2011. What *I* heard for the chorus was "Go Paulina, Go Paulina, oye." Since I wasn't familiar with the song I looked up the lyrics and couldn't believe the chorus is "Whine up, whine up, oye." I have listened to this song multiple times since I first heard it, even while reading the lyrics and my ears just don't hear "whine up." Hmmmmm, wonder if this is some NSA Jedi mind trick. Here is the amazing dance to "Go Paulina" "Whine Up"...during all the rehearsals they had never been able to do that first lift and had decided to leave it out of the routine. Once they got started, J.R. Martinez decided to go for it, thus the "come on" gesture he gives. If anyone isn't familiar with J.R. Martinez (I wasn't until that season of DWTS), he is truly an inspiration.
  4. Dillon Levenque wrote: Once upon a time.... A band made a recording of a song (they didn't write it: their version was a cover) that became a big hit. The lyrics were, as you can hear, a bit hard to understand. Some college kids in Indiana or Illinois were so sure the lyrics must be obscene they even came up with some obscene lyrics of their own that seemed to fit. Suddenly the country was gripped with the incredible news that a song with dirty lyrics was playing on the radio! This wasn't helped by the fact that gullible nitwit kids totally bought into the dirty lyrics thing. I once heard a woman on a radio program, many years later, say, "You couldn't understand the lyrics but we all knew they were dirty." She still believed that, too. In any case, a whole lot of stuff hit the fan. Outraged parents and teachers started contacting their congressmen and senators, and before it was over the Attorney General of the United States—Robert F. Kennedy—ordered the Federal Bureau of Investigation to investigate. I'm not kidding. The FBI went on the case. http://vault.fbi.gov/louie-louie-the-song You can read that report if you want. It's fun reading. Not to be a spoiler but the FBI was unable to determine that the lyrics were obscene. They lacked some of the research tools we have now: it was 1963. One of the suggestions was that they play the record (it was a 45 RPM record) at slower or faster speeds to see if the words would then become clear. One FBI agent wrote in his summary, "Unintelligible at any speed.", which was a hilariously funny takeoff on the title of a currently popular Ralph Nader rant book. Had I been president I would have immediately promoted that agent to be the head of the FBI. This guy seems to have most of the lyrics right. I've never found them in print but I have heard earlier recordings of the song by people who enunciated clearly and these seem to match. Do I get credit for being slightly on-topic because of the government snooping, or was this just a flat out derail? That brings back memories - the song, that is. I had no idea of the furor surrounding it. I recall singing the song with my friends and after "Louie, Louie" we just sort of mumbled something since we had no idea what they lyrics were. Snappy beat, though.

Spica Inventor wrote: Creating (high quality) stuff is very important for economic growth in SL, but what's much more important than that at the moment is reducing the cost of land substantially, because the cost of land (funneling too much of the economy into the L.L. treasury in that manner) is holding back creativity more than anything else by far. IMO, it's not the cost of land since there is a TON of abandoned land on the mainland for 1L sqm so, particularly if one places a shop in the sky or blocks out ugly surroundings on the ground, the initial purchase price of mainland isn't an issue as much as the tier jumps. A lessening of the leaps between tier cut-offs is what I would love to see but, considering this has been discussed as long as I've been on the forums (including the old Resident Answer forums), I'm not holding my breath that this will happen.
  6. Marigold Devin wrote: No one I've spoken to out in my real life has even heard of Second Life, even now, after all these years, so this thing about it having a reputation is perhaps only valid in certain parts of the country/world. Same here. When I've mentioned SL to anyone in RL I am either asked "What is SL?" or get a blank stare. If someone seems interested I tell them a bit about it and some of the things I enjoy in SL, such as dancing. The next comment is usually, "That seems weird." When I've mentioned SL to friends in EQ or WoW I either get, "What is SL?" or "I tried that game once and didn't like it." Demographically I live in the U.S.; most of the RL people to whom I have mentioned SL are 45+ and only use PCs (generally laptops) for research, email, FB or Twitter. Most have never done any kind of PC gaming. The people I know in MMORPGs are generally fairly hard-core gamers, also 40+, and prefer games where they level up and get "ubar powers and phat lootz" so SL wouldn't be their cup of tea. A couple of years ago I finally convinced one of my friends from EQ to try SL. When I asked what his name meant (it was a mess of letters) he said, "You can see that?!?! That's my pw!!! What kind of a game shows other people your pw????" It took a long time to settle him down long enough to figure out that somehow in the signup process he put his pw where his name should be. He then said that the instructions said not to worry about a name as he could create one once he got in world. I actually went through the signup process to double check this and it was a bit confusing. Maybe it has changed since then. Otoh, maybe the names with weird combos of letters & numbers *are* actually passwords...hmmmmm. My friend decided from that experience that he wanted nothing to do with SL.

  8. Ah, ok. I do get warnings about deleting no copy items. Thaks, Tari.

I have never seen that warning in my entire time in SL (using the LL 1.2x viewer, Nicholaz, Phoenix, CoolVL Viewer, and not Singularity) so just checked my viewer. Unless I'm looking at something entirely difterent, notifications in Singularity are called Popups (Preferences->Popups). I looked through the list and am getting some of the popups/notifications (ie. a notice when I turn Busy on, one that tells me when clothing is taking a long time to download, etc.) I didn't see one indicating notification if I delete part of a set (I'm assuming, for example, if an outfit has 10 pieces and I delete 4 of them - I do that when I won't use certain pieces) so now I'm curious.

Anyone can join SL (I'll let the "game" comment go) for free and don't have to pay a cent to enjoy it. Each of us choose If we wish to put any RL money into SL and how much.

A lot of people keep group chat turned off. When you are in 42 groups it can be impossible to manage. I have all but two turned off myself. Good point. I tend to keep the majority of my group chats turned off as well - especially when building.

Oh..I'm sorry. Did you say something? I didn't see you come in....:matte-motes-sunglasses-3: Honestly, depending on where you are when you're trying to start an open chat, people may not see you. There can be a lot going on so don't take it personally. That's true - two friends and I began a text conference chat a few nights ago and, although regular IMs to each other individually were fine, our communication in the conference chat was lagged, posts appeared out of order, and eventually all of us getting error messages that our chat was not getting through that we just gave up on that. Chat in larger established groups is very unpredictable as well - I've had times when it worked great and other times when none of my chat showed up and/or was badly scrambled.
  13. One of the best places to go when new is New Citizens Inc. There you will meet other new people to SL as well as people who have been in SL for some time who enjoy helping others. The website in the link provides the links to their locations.

If I have a single passenger left, I consider the flight a failure. (You've been warned, Czari.) ;-) *Makes note to come prepared with a parachute* Actually, some of the best times I had on SL were when my partner donned his IoW dragon avatar and, with me as the rider, went exploring. Back in 2007-2008 sim crossings were even more precarious than they are now and it was always a gamble if we'd actually make it across together and intact. More often than not the dragon saddle would be hovering in mid-air while my partner was flung to one end of a sim and me to the other. Good times! Nova Convair wrote: One detail - this is SL - I can teleport everywhere in an instant and I can fly on my own and - if i want to - can fly even faster than your plane And I don't even need navigation because I can teleport at every time and so always reach my target. I suggest to drop thinking RL and start thinking SL One reason I find this idea interesting is not for utilitarian purposes, as in I'm certainly not going to book a flight to go shopping when I can tp to each location, but rather as quasi-rp and meeting other people with similar interests.

I had no idea Greenland was that big and off the coast of South America, which somehow played leap frog with North America. Greenland also looks a great deal like South America. I'd love to know the source of that map...rofl.
  17. Of course - my point was that apparently the educational materials of different countries have a discrepancy on this point; therefore, if a person runs with that (or anything else they've been taught) without checking on their own, we get the differing statements we've seen here. As I mentioned, I was taught that Central America was a separate continent. ETA: When I looked this up I was surprised to see a lot of hits such as "So how many continents ARE there?" and similar titles. I didn't expect that for an issue that would seem to be rather straightforward, strange maps with misplaced continents notwithstanding. This reminds me of the scene in "The King and I" where the instructor from the King's court shows a map of Siam and Burma to the children where Siam is huge, then the English instructor shows a map of the world to the class and is confronted by the Prince (iirc) on that map's "error."
  18. It never fails that when I see a post/thread about a drop in MP sales, that is precisely when my sales have picked up. (Not that I have a great volume to begin with.) I think it has a lot to do with seasons/holidays; I sell a number of holiday items and those are what have been selling.

I recall learning in geography that, amongst the continents of the world, there was North America and South America as has been mentioned, as well as Central America. Apparently, everyone posting is "correct" based on how they have been taught. I found this quite interesting. Quoting from part of the article: In Europe and other parts of the world, many students are taught of six continents, where North and South America are combined to form a single continent of America.
  21. Although I've never been particularly interested in flying in SL (and I am horrible at navigating vehicles), the idea of taking flights in aircraft piloted by others does sound like it could be fun. Heading into world to join your group. Great idea!

OTOH, subscription games like WoW has a fair number of griefers even when people pay $14.95 USD/month to play (although that does include quite a few alt characters on one account) so you may have a point. i got charged the 9.95 when i made my alt..because i used my same payment info..i think i made mine just as it turned 2007..it might have still been 2006 though..i'd have to look.. with alts in wow there is no way to log on two from the same account at the same time.. you have to have two accounts for that..but you can have like 8 or 10 alts per realm and on all the realms.. just can't have two from the same account active at once like we can here.. Re: the $9.95 charge - I began SL in May 2007 and created my first alt *thinks* actually a month or two later. If you got charged for one between the end of 2006-early 2007 then that would account for the info still being listed on the website that a second account would be charged but they had apparently quit doing so. (I used the same payment info as well.) Now that I think of it, I recall people posting in mid-late 2007 saying they had not been charged for the alt and people saying it wasn't done anymore even though it was still listed on the website. Re: WoW type games - I'd forgotten about the inability to have two avatars from the same account logged in. I always boggled when I ran into people, usually in EQ, who paid for sometimes 4+ accounts just to create their own "group." Talk about multi-tasking!!! Edit: Typo

I have not noticed it called that before. The wiki has an article on the continents and a map (including private ones), I am surprised no one else has mentioned. Thank you for that link.
  24. Scylla Rhiadra wrote: Yes, but I always thought -- evidently incorrectly -- that Rosedale was an "old fashioned" libertarian, rather than a neoliberal. Which is to say, a libertarian with at least some semblance of ethics. I heard someone once comment that the two main political parties in the U.S. are a two-card Monte being played against the American people. Not being much of a card player I don't fully understand the "Monte" reference but the underlying meaning comes through. I dropped identifying (and supporting) individual political parties years ago. Libertarian can of course be used to describe a political philosophy as well as one of the alternate established U.S. political parties but I would concur with Qie on his rationale.
  25. I would have been surprised if I had heard this in 2007 but today, and now in retrospect, it doesn't surprise me at all. I wonder how many of those requests posted on the forums for help in researching xyz were from government agents. Ok, that does sound a little tin-hatsville but it is interesting to contemplate in light of the referenced article. I've been hearing in various news media lately that many of the first person shooter computer games were originally used by the military to use as virtual training for combat then later repackaged under a different name to sell as games. No idea if that is definitively true, but makes some sense. Maybe we *are* really living in the Matrix.
