I agree with not wanting M. back as well but I don't think he would be asked back. I could see Philip coming in for the interim, perhaps. Has anyone seen any announcement in an official SL/LL medium yet?
  2. Amethyst Jetaime wrote: I can't say I was impressed by him. Communication between LL and its customers took a dive. The other games that LL developed weren't exactly hits and with the debacle over the change to the TOS and the gamifying (if that's a word lol) of SL.... Hopefully the new CEO will realize what SL is really about and how much we all care for our virtual world and work with residents rather than ignoring them. I agree, Amethyst, and the bolded part is what I was most disappointed about re: Rod. From this interview that I have linked to several times on these forums, I was concerned with him "laughing" when offered the CEO position of LL and asking, "Is that still around?" Then the next comment of, "Also, it was a company that was ready made to do a whole bunch of other products, which I wanted to do.” That HE wanted to do. He came from a game company and I believe he saw SL as a game; thus the institution of pathfinding, etc. Edit: punctuation ETA: I vote for Torley Linden as the next CEO!
  3. No. I enjoy being a girl (to quote a line from the musical "Flower Drum Song")...in both worlds.

In reading the directions it *seems* to be a builder's tool, meaning it will only allow me to generate to mesh the items I build. I was hoping I could take some furniture/houses I already own and turn them into mesh. I will contact the designer/s to see for sure.
  5. There are at least two in world mesh generators on the MP which look like wonderful tools for builders (like me) who have no earthly idea how to use Blender, etc. Two questions: 1. Can these types of products only create mesh items from full perm items ie. ones I specifically build or is it possible to use these generators with items I own (houses, furnishings, etc.) that are not full perm? 2. What is the difficulty level in using them? I watched someone demonstrate one of these products recently and I recall something about certain colored parts that were generated could be textured differently. Thank you in advance for any info on these generators.

All other multiplayer online games or multiverse's lack allot of creative freedom or adult maturity SL offers. (Yes Adults come with drama, but at least it is correctly spelt and intelligible drama, unlike the stuff kids come out with in many many online communities.....) Can we quote you? This is a wonderful post. Hope you stick around the Forum too. I second that!!!

I stopped and did that little "pre-jump" thing, intending to fly up so I could look over the wall and see what it was. Duh. *Wipes water off the monitor* I had an experience in RL a tiny bit like that, without the pre-jumping though...*grins*. I was walking through a parking lot and heard that high heel click-click sound behind me and thought, "I wish people would turn off that sound; it is annoying and especially silly when walking on sand or snow (I've actually seen that in SL)." As I was thinking this, the woman with the clicking heels passed me and as I turned to look at her "avatar" it dawned on me..."Oh right! This is RL; high heels DO make that sound on pavement." I did a mental facepalm. Edit: grammar

Join the group: SL Gridflight Take part in their SLGF Historic Kessel Run Challenge January 15th, 17th, and 18th 2014. I was going to ask if that group is open enrollment, but I just checked online and it is. I'm a very infrequent flyer but I see there's a gridflight section through my neighborhood (Corsica) the first week of February and it looks like something that might be fun to watch. I don't remember seeing an airstrip in my travels, either, so it would be nice to learn where it is. Thanks for posting that! Dillon, if you find out any more info on when planes would be going over Corsica, I'd be interested in watching that as well.

Quit being an ostrich and maybe you'd see them. I both fly all the time and see aircraft all the time. I fly almost daily now. I've been flying recently as well and am in a group that offers flights. The daily flights offered are quite numerous.
  10. Amethyst Jetaime wrote: This is the problem with mainland and why most of SL landowners prefer private estates. Mainland has no covenant and that can be a blessing to the landowner but a curse to their neighbors, as illustrated by this situation. I've always loved living on Mainland, but I am fortunate in that the sim I have been on for 6 years has quite a few long term (5+ years) residents and we have all co-existed well. The shorter-term residents have overall been wonderful as well.
  11. Pussycat Catnap wrote: This is what security orbs are good for. Not the low end ones that often come free with prefab orbs. Get one like the Hippo brand one that you can configure to fractions of a meter. I use it to operate only inside the bounds of my home's walls. Nobody needs to know it is even there, and I have had people stand on my lawn and chat in bliss... where I welcome them doing so. But enter my private space and its a 0-second warning teleport out. Space that is inside the walls, behind locked doors. So the only way in is to teleport or to remote sit on the furniture - and if you do those things you KNOW you are entering somebody else's home. Especially as its decorated with art I like and pictures of my avatar and some friends. Oh wow! I didn't know there were orbs with tuning that precise! Thank you for posting this. I do like how you describe having your orb set up - only operating the orb within the walls of your home.
  12. When I want privacy in my sky home I use a security orb. The one I use has warning settings ranging from 10 seconds - 60 seconds which is what I use (the latter) when I do have it activated; that generally gives enough time for aircraft to move through the area although at 4000m in the sky I haven't seen any air traffic. That was more of an issue back in the day when the maximum building height was a lot lower and my home was only 600m up. I had someone wandering into my home once when I was brand new to SL and living on an estate sim. I first greeted the person - no response as she wandered about the living room. I asked why she was in my house - no response. This went on for awhile until she finally left. I was so new that I didn't know how to eject. I talked to the estate owner the next morning and was introduced to the control panel by the front door that I wondered what it did - a built in security system (including eject/ban) for the property. :matte-motes-bashful-cute:
  13. Hi Yummy! I remember you from the old RA forums. Welcome back.

Anyone have any experience with this?? Thanks! Years ago the same thing happened to someone I knew; she either put in a ticket or called LL and a Linden came to meet her and make sure that the abandoned land was adjacent to her land. Iirc, she was able to purchase the land. Worth a try.
  15. Kelli May wrote: Further back, before my time, there was a prim tax. I hear that people used to remove prim structures on 'tax day' to evade the tax. In the book Second Life: The Official Guide there is an interesting chapter called "A Cultural Timeline." The timeline is: *First Era - 2001 - early 2003: Pre-Historic, Pre-Beta *Second Era - Summer 2003: Natives Vs Colonists *Second Era - Summer 2003: Revolution! (This refers to the prim tax which was imposed, according to the book and apparently according to the Lindens to "...prevent residents from overheating the servers with too many objects." Then: Objecting most strongly to Linden's tax policy was Americana, a group devoted to creating tributes to US landmarks. Feeling punished for their public works project, Americana unleashed a protest suitable to their name, dropping giant tea crates across the world and setting ther American landmarks on fire. A cat named Fleabite Beach sent out a Thoreau-style proclamation against "Mad King Lindent," and led the revolutionaries into the streets with muskets and signs emblazoned with the words "Born Free: Taxed to Death." (A photo is included that shows some of the protestors.) Much of he citizenry was drawn into the insurrection, either as rebels or redcoat "Linden loyalists." pg.282) *Third Era - Winter 2003: A New Nation is Born During this period, Linden Lab made three policy decisions that were considered radical at the time: 1. To end monthly subscriptions...and instead, begin charging monthly "land use" fees for virtual land. 2. To announce a laissez-faire policy on buying and selling the official in-world currency on the open market for real money. 3. to recognize residents' legally enforceable intellectual-property rights over the objects and scripts they created within the world. pp. 282-283 *Fourth Era - Late 2003-Early 2004: Expanding the Frontier *Fifth Era - Mid 2004 - Mid 2005: Industrial Revolution *Sixth Era - Summer 2005 -Present (Copyright on book is 2007): Boom Time I wonder what more recent eras would be called.
  16. I've wondered how many prims were in furnishings when I've been out shopping RL. :matte-motes-bashful-cute:

Innula Zenovka wrote: Orca Flotta wrote: For me this sound more than fishy and I have a couple questions and comments: 1) are all LL customers with a credit card supposed to get that letter or only US citizens? 2) I'm living in South Africa and holding an SA ID card, but am a citiizen of the Federal Republic Germany by all means. So I can hardly be considered an American patriot let alone fall under that act. Or can I? 3) If this letter turns out to be legit and I get one too ... I guess it'll be the end of my glorious career in SL. Baibai. No sane person should ever get along wih such bullcrap. Obama, the IRS, LL and the NSA are obnoxious and repel me to no end! LL recently (November 19) announced The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) requires Linden Lab to collect and retain Form W-9 (for U.S. residents) and Form W-8BEN (for non-U.S. residents) at certain transaction volumes. If you reach the transaction threshold and we do not have your completed and signed W-9 or W-8BEN on file, we are required to withhold funds from your account (at the current rate of 28% of your gross amounts received). Additionally, for U.S. residents with 200 or more transactions with a total amount in excess of $20,000 in a calendar year, we are required to file a Form 1099-K with the IRS reporting those transactions for that year. If you are required to submit a W-9 or W-8BEN form to us, we will email you before the end of the year with instructions on how to do so. Please follow the instructions to complete and submit the required Form W-9 or W-8BEN within thirty (30) days of receipt. You will only need to complete this paperwork once unless your information changes from year-to-year. If you do not receive an email from Linden Lab, we do not need you to complete these forms. So the IRS will be requiring information from some people, but not many, and the timing of this post seems suspicious. I have to say that, while I dislike paying tax on my earnings as much as the next person, I can't really agree that "no sane person should ever get along with such bullcrap." The IRS info that is posted above (and which we also discussed in the Merchant forums) doesn't concern me; it's the reference to the Patriot Act in the email that Pamela received that has me a bit perplexed. IRS regulations for financial income is one thing; having to supply identifying information to be part of the NSA database is another. As I understand it, the IRS letter was sent to people who withdrew money from SL ie. earn money withing SL. If this letter is legit, it will be interesting to see how many people and who receives it.

  20. Thank you for bringing this to our attention, Pamela. If it *is* legit, it is downright scary imo to be required to give all that information. Some residents have provided some of that info to either put billing info on file or when we had to provide info for age verification, but just the way the email is written is a bit chilling, imo. Hopefully it is a fake.

  22. Krueger wrote: Wow: there are some really old avs here. I wish I could have been around SL in the early years. Does anyone have any stories of what it used to be like? Or screenshots? A very common occurrence in 2007 was regularly having to pluck one's shoe from one's behind, especially after teleporting. And then there was the avatar doubled up with one's head *in* one's behind. Good times!! :smileyvery-happy: Edit: grammar
  23. My position is similar in most ways to that of Chic and Toy: *Since the new TOS I have not uploaded any new content; my in world store remains closed (I closed it prior to the TOS issue, but had planned to re-open it with updated items and a new store layout) *I may look into places like Kitely where I can sell items across multiple platforms *I am no longer in the UCCSL group *My activity in SL has gone back to being 90% social - relaxing, exploring SL again, etc.
  24. Happy Rez Day! 6 years/8 months here.
  25. So glad you got them working. I've never tried the built in viewer AOs...sounds like I may have to give that a try. ETA: Just tried the built in AO in the Singularity viewer and WOW!!! Why haven't I tried this before?? The upper left corner on my viewer will seem empty now...lol. Thank *you* MissBegotten.
