  1. Gosh, this would make for a rip-roaring story! Man vs. nature, with nothing but his trusty crossbow and his faithful hunting dog! You do recognize, though, that one's ability to be "self-reliant" is heavily dependent upon one's resources and level of privilege? I'm not talking about those who elderly, or homeless, or ill, or disabled . . . but rather the large percentage of people who live literally pay cheque to pay cheque, who still have to go to work, maybe at two jobs, every day . . . People who might not have a nice nest egg that they can use to buy a home generator, who have to shovel the snow themselves because they can't afford someone to pay for it . . . What, for you, constitutes "needy" exactly? And what, exactly, in this context does this really mean, Arielle? How does being "able bodied" make a difference here? Are they going to wrestle that snowstorm to the ground with sheer able-bodiedness? Surviving this kind of challenge in this day and age really doesn't require having "gumption" or "grit" or get-to-itness. It requires having money.
  2. I'm not really seeing that, Alwin. Can you explain. So far as the first appearance of this in the Education / Non-profit section, I'd agree that this is not where that should go.
  3. Fair. Groups like this are always about comfort levels, and people have different needs in that regard. I don't know that there is necessarily a direct relationship here between the tone of the posts, and how discussions might actually unfold in-world within the group. And, the OP has been trolled by someone who clearly (and demonstrably, from past posts here) doesn't like . . . well, pretty much anything, so far as I can make out. So the tone might also have been influenced by that?
  4. This is good. What about something like "Find Our Way: Surviving Abusive Families"? You don't want it to be too long.
  5. There is absolutely NO rule that states that an activist, support, or advocacy group "must" post in the RP section of this forum if they don't have specific ties with an RL group. But you seem to have figured out you were being trolled there. I don't have a specific suggestion, in terms of name, but I might suggest that you make the purpose of the group as clear as possible. "Virtual Ability" is a good example of a group that combined "clever" with "clear," but one of the most successful groups I've ever been involved with, "Stop Violence against Women," racked up a pretty impressive membership very quickly back in 2009 because the title was simple, clear, and to the point: people could look at it and immediately say, "Yeah, I'm on board with that." Good luck, in any case!
  6. Ah, Everwinter! An oldie but a goodie (with horrible lag). Skrunda is a newish sim -- much more "realistic" than Everwinter, because modeled after a real Latvian town. The SLURL is in this post, as well as brief description. Definitely worth checking out.
  7. Skrunda? Great sim -- and yes, it reminded me of Chernobyl too.
  8. I actually love Mainland. Probably half of my photos are taken there: there are some really lovely, and lovingly created, corners.
  9. So, @Eva Knoller (and I'm sure many others who are more on top of these things than I am) recently discovered a very cool new sim called Skrunda, which is "loosely based" on a real Latvian town licensed for use by the Russian Federation to host radar installations, and later abandoned. The sim represents this town in its state of abandonment -- empty and derelict buildings, playgrounds, car parks . . . it's eerie and a bit chilling, and very very cool. http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Rockford/158/53/23 I fully expect to be taking a number of pics there. Here's a first.
  10. Surely the most compelling reason not to do this is that half of the more obvious first name / last name combinations would be already unavailable from the get-go, having been snagged a dozen or so years ago? What's the point in resuscitating names that are going to be barely usable?
  11. Another rather disturbing if predictable facet of the pandemic, and the resulting lockdowns, has been a rise in cases of domestic abuse and violence. The CBC, to its credit, has been drawing attention to this since shortly after the lockdowns began here in Canada. Apparently, the problem continues unabated. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/domestic-intimate-partner-violence-up-in-pandemic-1.5914344
  12. This is "end of an era" stuff, Oz. Thank you for everything you've contributed to SL, and to our lives and enjoyment. Enjoy your next challenge, whatever that may be. And stop by occasionally, maybe, to say hello.
  13. I've had the same symptoms, and did get tested. I was told 12-24 hours for the results and got them in about 7, so keep an eye out. And I don't have Covid. You probably don't either. I've never been so relieved to discover that I've probably just got a really bad cold.
  14. I like the Perky a lot . . . but I'd never have bought it at full price.
  15. Hockey sticks and touques. Actually, I hate hockey -- my only real sport is baseball. I do wear touques though. I don't really look for, yet alone collect, "Canadiana" in SL. although I'll occasionally feel a slight stirring when I see a Canadian flag, or something that specifically references my city, Toronto (there was a sim, many years ago, that did a pretty good job of replicating Dundas Square here, and one occasionally sees the CN Tower around). And the things I most associate with Canada aren't tangible in that way -- they are things like universal healthcare, and gun laws. (And that's not just me being political: numerous polls over the years suggest that our healthcare system is maybe the most important part of our self-identity). Really, though, Canada is a nice place to live, but I wouldn't want to visit here. I'm far more interested in seeing things from other cultures and places.
  16. That's really lovely. And I like Taikou as well, although I don't particularly collect Japanese objects. They make lovely things though, and I use their backdrops a fair bit.
  17. So, Sunday nights are just about my favourite time in SL because it's jazz night at The Mercury Room. As I think I've mentioned before here, the DJ is an old jazz / session musician who played with, among others, Leon Redbone, and he has a super extensive collection of jazz recordings. Most of what he plays is quite out-of-the-way stuff from the 20s to the 50s -- this isn't your usual run of swing band favourites, or Ella and Louis (although he does those too sometimes). VERY cool, and I learn a lot. It's also a very pretty night club, one of the relatively few that doesn't look like a barn, or a frat house common room. http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Cerveza Island/91/207/652 Anyway, here's a quick screen grab from Gyazo (slightly gussied up in Photoshop) from last night, of me dancing with @Skal Paulse.
  18. THAT'S WHAT I KEEP SAYING!!!! Weirdly, they all just sort of shake their heads sadly. Go figure.
  19. Sexy! Nothing turns me on more than allusions to Winnie, car insurance, and bulldogs. It's a kink.
  20. Well, Riley is as cute as the proverbial bug's ear, isn't she? I really admire people who have the courage and talent to produce a beautiful non-standard look. She's gorgeous, she looks real (rather than airbrushed), and she stands out. And you can tell her that I (who am pretty meat-and-potatoes, honestly) said so.
  21. Do you think a boyfriend would let you keep a giant pink plushy out? No way. Consider yourself lucky! (A girlfriend might, though . . . depends.)
