  1. It looks as if they have just reduced the verification process from two meaningless hoops to one. We've been on an honor system since last year anyway, so this just makes that empty system a little less annoying.

That information has also mysteriously disappeared from http://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/Age-restricted-content/ta-p/700021 too. LL seems to be rethinking the concept. They've pulled back to regroup. It would be nice if they told us what's going on.
  3. No, there isn't, and I have an extremely hard time imagining a case in which you would ever need to come close to the 65 listen limit. Having that many listen handlers open at once is abusing the sim's servers and potentially creating lag for everyone. If you are listening for responses from several possible avatars or objects, or if you are listening for specific key messages, just filter what you hear with if tests.
  4. All you can do is file a support ticket. >>> https://support.secondlife.com/create-case/ Try using the category Land & Region >>> Report an offline region
  5. You shouldn't need to change skins, and clearing cache won't help at all. (In fact, clearing cache when you don't need to just forces your viewer to download a fresh copy of every single texture that it used to have in cache. That will make everything rez slowly and look gray for a while.) You have had a communication problem between your viewer and SL's servers, so your avatar image has been messed up. (You haven't been using a wireless connection, have you? Don't do that.) What works to repair the damage for one person won't necessarily work for the next person, and it may not be the same thing that works for you tomorrow. See the full list of possibilities here >>> http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/doku.php?id=fs_bake_fail . Start with the simple things at the top of the list and work down until you find what works for you today. You may find that the bake fail problem comes back repeatedly, even after you fix it with one of the suggestions on that wiki page. You might end up with odd textures on your avatar, or none, or you might look like a fluffy cloud. If so, you have a chronically weak Internet connection. There are many steps to take for repairing it. Perhaps the simplest ones -- ones that work best for most people -- are: (1) Don't Use WIRELESS. Wireless connections are inherently less stable than direct cable connections and are more vulnerable to interference. Then, (2) Reboot your router. Unplug it from the power for a few minutes to let it clear its RAM. The plug it back in and let it get a fresh hold on an IP address.

    Managing your Marketplace store

The very first line in Changing the item associated with a listing should say something like "If you want to sell a different or updated version of an item using a current listing, first upload the new version to your Marketplace store, using the Merchant Outbox. It will appear in your list of Unassociated Inventory Items. Then:" Otherwise, it's not clear that the merchant has to upload the new version first.
  7. If you want to sell a different or updated version of an item using a current listing, first upload the new version to your Marketplace store, using the Merchant Outbox. It will appear in your list of Unassociated Inventory Items. Then: In the upper-right, choose My Marketplace > Merchant home. On the left, click Manage inventory. Find the item you want to update, and choose Actions > Edit at the far right. Click Search without entering anything in the text box. A list of inventory items appears. These are the inventory items not associated with any listing information. Click the name of the new item. Next to SL object name, the name of the new item now appears. Click the Update button at the bottom to save your changes.
  8. Ah... but they did know who you were, since you had already used that RL identification the first time. In any case, it's not our choice. Remember, this is not a democracy. SL is LL's business and they get to decide what forms of payment they will accept.
  9. Several people have reported problemsToshiba Satellite notebooks. It has an integated graphics chip instead of a discrete graphics card, so it's not really designed for the sort of heavy graphics use that SL expects. You shouldn't expect very good performance from it. It should run, though. You have already done each of the remedies that we would normally recommend if a viewer hangs up at the VFS initialization stage, so I suspect that you have a damaged file somewhere. It's probably smart to do a clean reinstall, which involves removing all traces of the current installation from your computer and downloading a fresh copy of your viewer of choice. Here's how to do it >>> http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/fs_clean_reinstall . Those instructions are written for the Firestorm viewer, but the same process works for any of them. If reinstalling your current viewer still doesn't work, I suggest trying a Third Party Viewer --- probably one based on a V1 code, like Phoenix or CoolVL, rather than a V3-level viewer.
  10. Shopping for Linden Homes is like going to buy a house in RL. The dream house you are looking for might not be available on the day you go looking for it. You might have to wait for a while. People abandon Linden Homes all the time and move on to larger parcels where they can build their own homes. When they do, those homes go on the market until they are scooped up by someone like you who has been checking periodically. Also, when there's a high demand for particular styles, Linden Lab will sometimes build a few more homes to meet the demand. They're cautious about doing that, because they don't want to risk tying up server space needlessly with homes that people don't want. Still, if you aren't the only one looking, you might luck into a building boom. Just be patient.
  11. If you're looking for ways to manipulate strings and lists in LSL, you'll find many useful functions that scripters in SL have created at public sites like http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Category:LSL_List#Extended_List_Operations and http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Category:LSL_String#User-created_utility_functions or in frequently-referenced user sites like http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/User:Void_Singer. You'll also find them scattered through threads in this forum and in SLU's Scripting forum (see, for example, http://www.sluniverse.com/php/vb/scripting/74267-brain-farting-all-over-my.html).
  12. I've just done the same Internet search that I imagine you have done (or should have done), and I'm only mildly impressed. The Intel HD Graphics 4000 seems to compare well to low- or medium-level discrete graphics cards, which isn't saying much. Integrated graphics chips are designed primarily to save space and power in notebook computers, where they appeal primarily to people who want to run common business applications --- spreadsheets, word processing, e-mail, web browsing, and accounting routines. They perform less well in the heavy-duty graphics environment of SL. Quite apart from the specs of that computer .... How do you know that you have a "really good Internet connection"? Really good for what? Second Life is a real bandwidth hog, and it relies on a continuous steady data stream between your computer and SL's servers. Typically, that means a wired connection (not wireless) that has a ping time no higher than 150msec --- the lower the better --- and as close to 0.0% packet loss as you can get. We get a dismaying number of troubled posts from people who have no problem with web browsing or playing simple MMO games like WoW, but can't handle SL. If you are lagging and crashing a lot now, consider the possibility that your computer isn't entirely to blame. Your "really good Internet connection" might not be as good as you think.
  13. It should not be possible for anyone else to change your Display Name. It would be extremely difficult for anyone to hack your account, because that would require access to Linden Lab's accounting system, but it is quite possible that you gave your userid and password to someone, either purposely or in a phishing scam. At minimum, you should immediately change your password. Your account may have been compromised if: You can't access your account. You suddenly notice a reduced available balance on the payment source you have on file. If this happens, contact Linden Lab immediately! Here's what to do: Go to the Second LIfe Help page and log in if you can. If you can't access your account, use the Forgot your login information? link on the right to recover your username and reset your password. Then log in. On the Second LIfe Help page page, click the Contact Support link on the right. On the next page, click Submit a a Support Case form. Under What type of problem are you having?, select Account Issue. A second dropdown appears. Under Account Issue, select I believe my account has been compromised. Fill in the rest of the fields as directed. Click Submit. Check your email for your case number. Call Linden Lab's fraud number: 800-860-6990. Once you do this, Linden Lab will place your account on hold and investigate the relevant transactions. This may take a few days. Once we have concluded the investigation, we'll send you an email explaining our conclusion and the action we will take. Note that all transactions involving Linden dollars are subject to Linden Lab's Terms of Service.
  14. If you look at this JIRA >>> Deleting stale (item unavailable) content from the beta marketplace website is tediously slow with the checkboxes unavilable to multiselect , You'll see this rationale from Commerce Team Linden (the pseudo person who speaks for the Marketplace management team): "Bulk deletion of Listings is prone to user error even with a warning dialogue. Accidental deletion of a Listing would permanently remove all sales data and reviews for it." In other words, multiple delete is too risky. You are free to add your own comments or suggestions about how to get around that risk. ETA: There's a similar JIRA at https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/WEB-4567.
  15. You can get a measure of your download speed at http://speedtest.net/ . Your own Maximum Bandwidth setting (in Preferences >> Network & Cache) should be about 75% to 80% of that number. For most people, that's about 1200 to 1500 Kbps. If you set Max Bandwidth too low, you'll start to get more lag. If you set it too high, you'll find that Voice and streaming media start to cut out, and you may start crashing at random. Incidentally, ping at 300 -400msec is BAD. There's definitely something wrong with your connection. It might be local --- unshielded data cables crossed over a power line somewhere maybe? -- or it could be farther away. Take a good look at Nalates' blog for suggestions about how to diagnose the problem and maybe cure it >>> Troubleshoot Your #SL Connection
  16. Try Preferences >> Communication >> Include IM in Chat Console
  17. Nyll's right. Those are all games -- Second Life is not. Not only are they drawn by professionals who know how to optimize performance, but almost all of the graphics on those MMO games resides on your own computer. SL is created almost entirely by amateurs, however. We can all be creators, but it means that SL's graphics is definitely not optimized. More importantly, images are constantly being recalculated by SL's servers as avatars and objects move, or as people create new objects. All of that information has to be downloaded to each person's local computer for display, and any changes in avatars themselves need to be uploaded back to the servers. All of that back and forth takes a huge chunk of bandwidth and a continuous, steady Internet connection. There's no way in the world that SL is ever going to run at a speed that simple games do.
  18. Try assigning different DNS servers. The public Google DNS servers work well for most people. Don't delete the ones that your ISPO assigns you by default, but add the Google servers to them as the first options. Here's how >>> https://developers.google.com/speed/public-dns/docs/using There are a couple of other possibilities, if that still doesn't help. First, if you've been using wireless, that can cause connection problems all by itself. Wireless loses too much information and bandwidtrh to interference, and it was never designed for continuous data transmission anyway. It sends data in bursts. Second, you may actually have a faulty router. It happens. Equipment gets old, suffers heat damage, or components simply wear out. Try temporarily plugging your computer directly into the modem, bypassing the router completely. If that works, then you probably have a bad router and need to think about a replacement.
  19. Yup. That (no mod) sign is just telling you that something in the object is no mod, not necessarily the object itself. That's normal, expected behavior. The permissions tag in inventory, in other words, will always tell you the most restrictive permissions applicable to the object.

    Question

As far as Linden Lab is concerned, two accounts are two different people. You can't combine your account with a friend's account (or a total stranger's), so there's no way to combine your own accounts either.
  21. Try turning Preferences >>> Graphics >>> Basic Shaders OFF. That may do the trick. Also, be sure that your Maximum Bandwidth (in Preferences >>> Network & Cache) is not set to more than about 75% of your Internet connection's measured download speed. For most people, that means keep it below 1200 to 1500 Kbps.
  22. No. Nobody can do that. However, your friend can look in her Transaction History (on her deshboard at secondlife.com >> Account) to see where the L$ really went. She may have 1) sent it to someone who has a real name that is the same as your Display Name, or 2) tried to pay you while you were in a crowd, and paid someone else by mistake, or 3) missed you entirely and paid an object near you, or 4) forgotten to pay you and just told you that she did.
  23. If you search the Internet, you may find people who offer to buy and sell L$. That is a very risky thing to do, though. You will rarely get an exchange rate as good as you will get on the Lindex, Linden Lab's official exchange, and you will not have a guarantee of safety. Several phishing scams have been reported recently, in which SL residents have been scammed into giving away imporant account information. You may have your RL accounts or identity compromised.
  24. You can't exchange. You have to find the owner of the parcel next to yours and make an agreement to buy that parcel from him. If the land is owned by Linden Lab, you'll have to buy it from them.
