  1. It should not be possible for anyone else to change your Display Name. It would be extremely difficult for anyone to hack your account, because that would require access to Linden Lab's accounting system, but it is quite possible that you gave your userid and password to someone, either purposely or in a phishing scam. At minimum, you should immediately change your password. Your account may have been compromised if: You can't access your account. You suddenly notice a reduced available balance on the payment source you have on file. If this happens, contact Linden Lab immediately! Here's what to do: Go to the Second LIfe Help page and log in if you can. If you can't access your account, use the Forgot your login information? link on the right to recover your username and reset your password. Then log in. On the Second LIfe Help page page, click the Contact Support link on the right. On the next page, click Submit a a Support Case form. Under What type of problem are you having?, select Account Issue. A second dropdown appears. Under Account Issue, select I believe my account has been compromised. Fill in the rest of the fields as directed. Click Submit. Check your email for your case number. Call Linden Lab's fraud number: 800-860-6990. Once you do this, Linden Lab will place your account on hold and investigate the relevant transactions. This may take a few days. Once we have concluded the investigation, we'll send you an email explaining our conclusion and the action we will take. Note that all transactions involving Linden dollars are subject to Linden Lab's Terms of Service.
  2. If you look at this JIRA >>> Deleting stale (item unavailable) content from the beta marketplace website is tediously slow with the checkboxes unavilable to multiselect , You'll see this rationale from Commerce Team Linden (the pseudo person who speaks for the Marketplace management team): "Bulk deletion of Listings is prone to user error even with a warning dialogue. Accidental deletion of a Listing would permanently remove all sales data and reviews for it." In other words, multiple delete is too risky. You are free to add your own comments or suggestions about how to get around that risk. ETA: There's a similar JIRA at https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/WEB-4567.
  3. You can get a measure of your download speed at http://speedtest.net/ . Your own Maximum Bandwidth setting (in Preferences >> Network & Cache) should be about 75% to 80% of that number. For most people, that's about 1200 to 1500 Kbps. If you set Max Bandwidth too low, you'll start to get more lag. If you set it too high, you'll find that Voice and streaming media start to cut out, and you may start crashing at random. Incidentally, ping at 300 -400msec is BAD. There's definitely something wrong with your connection. It might be local --- unshielded data cables crossed over a power line somewhere maybe? -- or it could be farther away. Take a good look at Nalates' blog for suggestions about how to diagnose the problem and maybe cure it >>> Troubleshoot Your #SL Connection
  4. Try Preferences >> Communication >> Include IM in Chat Console
  5. Nyll's right. Those are all games -- Second Life is not. Not only are they drawn by professionals who know how to optimize performance, but almost all of the graphics on those MMO games resides on your own computer. SL is created almost entirely by amateurs, however. We can all be creators, but it means that SL's graphics is definitely not optimized. More importantly, images are constantly being recalculated by SL's servers as avatars and objects move, or as people create new objects. All of that information has to be downloaded to each person's local computer for display, and any changes in avatars themselves need to be uploaded back to the servers. All of that back and forth takes a huge chunk of bandwidth and a continuous, steady Internet connection. There's no way in the world that SL is ever going to run at a speed that simple games do.
  6. Try assigning different DNS servers. The public Google DNS servers work well for most people. Don't delete the ones that your ISPO assigns you by default, but add the Google servers to them as the first options. Here's how >>> https://developers.google.com/speed/public-dns/docs/using There are a couple of other possibilities, if that still doesn't help. First, if you've been using wireless, that can cause connection problems all by itself. Wireless loses too much information and bandwidtrh to interference, and it was never designed for continuous data transmission anyway. It sends data in bursts. Second, you may actually have a faulty router. It happens. Equipment gets old, suffers heat damage, or components simply wear out. Try temporarily plugging your computer directly into the modem, bypassing the router completely. If that works, then you probably have a bad router and need to think about a replacement.
  7. Yup. That (no mod) sign is just telling you that something in the object is no mod, not necessarily the object itself. That's normal, expected behavior. The permissions tag in inventory, in other words, will always tell you the most restrictive permissions applicable to the object.

    Question

As far as Linden Lab is concerned, two accounts are two different people. You can't combine your account with a friend's account (or a total stranger's), so there's no way to combine your own accounts either.
  9. Try turning Preferences >>> Graphics >>> Basic Shaders OFF. That may do the trick. Also, be sure that your Maximum Bandwidth (in Preferences >>> Network & Cache) is not set to more than about 75% of your Internet connection's measured download speed. For most people, that means keep it below 1200 to 1500 Kbps.
  10. No. Nobody can do that. However, your friend can look in her Transaction History (on her deshboard at secondlife.com >> Account) to see where the L$ really went. She may have 1) sent it to someone who has a real name that is the same as your Display Name, or 2) tried to pay you while you were in a crowd, and paid someone else by mistake, or 3) missed you entirely and paid an object near you, or 4) forgotten to pay you and just told you that she did.
  11. If you search the Internet, you may find people who offer to buy and sell L$. That is a very risky thing to do, though. You will rarely get an exchange rate as good as you will get on the Lindex, Linden Lab's official exchange, and you will not have a guarantee of safety. Several phishing scams have been reported recently, in which SL residents have been scammed into giving away imporant account information. You may have your RL accounts or identity compromised.
  12. You can't exchange. You have to find the owner of the parcel next to yours and make an agreement to buy that parcel from him. If the land is owned by Linden Lab, you'll have to buy it from them.
  13. Yes, they will still see you, and they will have no idea that you have blocked them unless you tell them. They might wonder why you don't answer when they say something in IM of chat, but let them guess. Of course, if you tell them in IM, that automatically UNblocks them. :smileywink:
  14. I have absolutely no idea, Avelinne. If you have a technical problem, it is best to start your own question instead of adding yours to a different one that might have nothing to do with it. Then, tell us exactly what the error message says. Also tell us what viewer your using, what computer you are using, what kind of graphics card it has, what sort of Internet connection you are using, and anything else that might help us understand what's wrong.
  15. That's a little confusing. Exactly what does the message say? I'm afraid that "about land source" doesn't make much sense to me. Also, you don't need to attach anything when you are rezzing furniture. You attach things to wear them. Click on the Options link in the upper right corner of your question and select EDIT to add more information and tell us exactly what you are trying to do and exactly what's going on. Please do NOT start a new thread.
  16. If you're over 18, you can TP to Mature sims where you can buy skins that aren't like the "modesty" skin you get as a newbie. You can get some pretty good freebie ones, but the best skins cost money.... anywhere from a few hundred to several thousand L$.
  17. A script to do that only has to handle that one function. I think this ought to do it..... default{ state_entry() { llSetPrimMediaParams(2,[PRIM_MEDIA_PERMS_CONTROL,PRIM_MEDIA_PERM_OWNER]); }} That should limit control on whatever URL you display on face 2 of your prim, so that only you can see the media control bar above the object. See http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/LlSetPrimMediaParams for other possible features.
  18. There's no error message that says "Second Life doesn't work", so we can't begin to guess what the problem is. Well, that's not quite true. Making a 95% blind guess, I'm going to say that you are either trying to run an extinct version of the Second Life viewer (version 1.23 maybe?) or you are using a very old computer. Maybe both. If I'm close to being right, you may not have an easy time getting in world. The basic Second Life viewer has been upgraded many times in the past 2 or 3 years and it requires a much more powerful computer than the old viewers did. If you are lucky, you might be able to install one of the third party viewers that are based on the old V1 code (See http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Third_Party_Viewer_Directory). As I said up front, though, I am really guessing. To give you a good answer, I'd need to know what viewer you really are using, and what kind of computer (and the type of graphics card it has). To add that information and anything else that might be helpful, click on the Options link in the upper right corner of your question and select EDIT. Please do NOT start a new thread. ETA: Hehehe... It looks like everyone else is saying the same thing, but they type faster than I do. :smileylol:
  19. You're probably not going to have much luck. The Via Chrome 9 Hcp IGP WDMM was never designed for gaming use. It's a lightweight chip intended for office software -- e-mail, web browsing, spreadsheets..... Not only that, but it's really old. According to what I can find, it was around in 2007. Laptops with on-board chipsets are often problematic for SL anyway. I'm surprised that you can see anything, even with your graphics slider set to Low.
  20. That might be a problem, for two reasons. First, Windows 8 is still in beta release, so there's no guarantee yet that SL will work well with it. Second, if you have a laptop with a built in Intel video chip, you may have performance issues. If you can get upgraded drivers to work, you'll get them here .... Intel Video Driver Intel driver download page Intel does not have a universal driver set. Please go to Intel's site and select the appropriate download.
  21. It probably has nothing to do with the restarts at all. When LL does a restart, it's changing the software in the servers that run the sims, not things that change the way your viewer works. Still, inventories do get borked. It happens to everyone sooner or later, expecially if you have a wonky Internet connection. Chances are good that the only problem is right in your own computer, which holds the cached copy of inventory that you see in your viewer. The way to solve the problem is to remove that cached copy "manually" (not by just clicking the Clear Cache button) and force your viewer to download a fresh one from Linden Lab's computers. So ..... Open Preferences → Network & Cache. Go to the first path “Cache Location” and click the “Open” button behind the path. This will open a file explorer window displaying your current cache location. Logout (close the viewer) and then delete everything inside the cache folder displayed in your file explorer. Should you not be able to start the viewer to bring up Preferences, then locate the folder manually. In its default location, the folder is hidden on most OSs. To find it, you will need to show hidden folders. Now you need to locate the settings folder: Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\[uSERNAME]\Local Settings\Application Data\Firestorm Windows Vista: C:\Users\[uSERNAME]\AppData\Local\Firestorm Windows 7: C:\Users\[uSERNAME]\AppData\Local\Firestorm Mac: ~/Library/Caches/Firestorm linux: ~/.firestorm/cache (Notice that these instructions say "Firestorm" but you can substitute the name of your own viewer. The instructions are the same for any of them.) Now continue as follows: Log back into SL, to a quiet region (try the Phoenix Support parcel or a Linden water region such as aich or hatton). On your inventory window, click “Recent Items”. Wait for your inventory to repopulate fully. The process may be sped up, if necessary, by typing random letters into the search bar. While inventory repopulates, do not teleport anywhere, and do not attempt to access anything in your inventory. Talk to people or surf the web. Watch as it repopulates. as long as you can see (Fetched…) at the top of the inventory window, it is still loading. Once inventory has repopulated, log out of SL once more, then log back in. ETA: If you ever want to submit a support ticket, just go to https://support.secondlife.com/create-case/
  22. I suspect that you're right, Innula. I don't know anyone offhand with a gargantuan name, but I guess you could write a script to capture a legacy name like that at random. Go to a crowded club and start trolling till you find a test case. I'd be interested in knowing the answer too.
  23. The Firestorm viewer has a Phantom option that you can turn in to make your avatar impossible to shove. If anyone tries, he just moves right through you. There is a catch, though. You can't move. So, the option is fine if you are standing in one spot and trying to frustrate a bad guy, but not if you plan on enjoying a normal life in SL. There are few scripted tools in SL that do the same thing as Firestorm's Phantom option, but they have the same limitation. And they cost L$. The best way to avoid being shoved around is just to sit down. On anything. Once you're seated, you're immobile. Then just ignore the bozos till they get tired and go away. Take a look at this long article on ideas for dealing with griefers (or just annoying people) >>> https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/User:Fr43k_Paine/Dealing_With_Griefers . They ought to help.
  24. I have a female body shape too. I love it. :smileylol: If you don't love yours, just replace it. A shape is like skin, clothes, HUDs, or anything else that you wear. Buy a new one, find one in your inventory, or make yourself a new one by playing with the Appearance sliders, and then just wear it. You always have to wear some shape --- I mean, after all, what would you look like without any shape at all? --- but in SL you get to choose, and to change yours when you get tired of it. Don't you wish you could do that in RL?
  25. The only things you will be able to save are the things that you can transfer to another avatar in world. You can copy full perm textures and scripts to your desktop, but that's all you can transfer out of SL. If you have an alt or a very good friend who agrees to watch your stuff (and give it back later), then you can at leave preserve that much in world when you close your account. Anything that's non-transferable is toast, though.
