Yes you CAN set region defaults in SL for Windlight now and that functions's been around for at least a year, I think.

Perhaps sk8urgurl JeanneAnne and Sociology Class JeanneAnne should get together and work out their differences some day.
  3. Webby Merlin wrote: What does VH have that SL does not? The OpenSim platform has the capability to set region WindLight defaults, a concept know as LightShare. VH is LightShare enabled (many other OpenSim grids are not.) - This means region owners and estate managers can set the windlight settings for sky and water, and make it the Region default so everyone entering the sim sees the same animated sky settings. Talk about setting the mood for your sim! There is a DEMO of this every Saturday at 2pm PDT on different sims in VH if you would like to see this in action. T Theresa Tennyson whispers, "Psst! SL has had region Windlight settings for, what? A year?"
  4. Someone saying that "all" of the animation engines on the Marketplace are copybotted throws up a red flag for me. There are a number of legitimate animation makers and I'm sure that means that at least SOME of the engines are legitimate. Did you buy the engine from someone who has a variety of animations for sale or was it closer to the SL equivalent of buying it out of the back of a truck? I think that specifically sex engines are a difficult topic because there was a well-known creator who was part of a multi-person team that put together one of the first sex animation engines. He later released the animations to the public but included not only his animations but also the ones made by others in the team when he didn't really have the right to.

Truckdaddy Texan wrote: how do you know what grid or server you are on? is there a map of some sort? i am central time and my sl partner is pacific standard time. were experencing tdays latest rolling restart but idk what region/grid/ server were on but i woild like to know my user name is Truckdaddy Texan. thanks The "Grid" that the main Second Life world on is called "Agni." If you have to ask, that's the one you're on : ) (There's another grid called "Aditi" that's just for testing but you have to take special steps to get there.) The "Region" name is shown in the top bar of your viewer, and at the bottom left corner of the sim you're on when you're looking at the "World Map." It's sort of like a county in RL - some regions stand alone and some are connected to other ones. They're always squares that are 256 x 256 SL meters. Your avatar is always in a region when you're logged in. When you teleport to somewhere else outside that region or walk across a "border" you then move to a different region which may be on a different machine at Linden Lab. The "Server" is a little tricky. It's actually a software version - there are many, many machines running the regions of SL but they're generally running one of four slightly different software versions: About 70% of the regions of the grid are running what's called just "Second LIfe Server". That's the main version that's had the most testing and is supposed to be the most stable. The other 30% of the regions are divided up into three "Release Channels" or "RC"'s. They're usually running slightly newer versions of the server software that have new features or bug fixes running on them. They test changes on those regions before loading them on the rest of the grid. The three "Release Channels" are called "RC Magnum," "RC BlueSteel" and "RC LeTigre" for reasons known only to the LIndens. Most of the time you won't notice much of a difference if your region is on a RC - I've lived in a region that's on RC Magnum for over a year. If you go to "Help - About Second Life" in the second paragraph it will say exactly where you are in the "world" and the last line of that paragraph will be the server version your region is using. Typically new software versions are sent to the 70% of the grid that's running Second Life Server on Tuesdays after the new version has been tested on the Release Channels for a few days/weeks. Those regions are usually restarted sometime during the day Tuesday if changes are being made. Then, on Wednesdays, the Lab takes proposed server changes and loads them on the "release candidate" channels - sometimes the same changes on all of them, sometimes a different set of changes on each sub-channel. Again, the regions have to be restarted most of the time. This week was unusual because of Labor Day and a bug that was noticed late last week so two of the RC's were restarted Thursday instead of Wednesday. And that's probably more than you wanted to know about how the Second Life servers are set up...
  6. You have to start from scratch by selecting "New Body Parts" - "New Shape" and editing the default shape then saving it. After you've got one shape like that in your name you can keep copying it to make new ones. The option's under the "gear" button in the "APPEARANCE" floater or the '+" menu in "INVENTORY", at least in Viewer 3.
  7. Whenever you connect to the Internet you have a identifier called an "IP address" that's unique to your particular computer, internet provider and real-world location (I"m not sure of the complete specifics so someone may be able to correct me on the details.) If you keep creating alts and logging in from the same location and computer you keep using the same IP address, and there are ways of determining this in SL. Looks like he was able to figure out your IP address (there are a number of ways he could have done this, both in and out of SL) and has a script that notfies him whenever someone is logged in from that address. Talk to your internet provider about getting your IP address changed. There are also programs that let you disguise your IP address but they might get you in trouble on SL because they are frequently used by griefers. Meanwhile, don't log in or create alts from your usual computer until you can do something to change your address.
  8. My house has an unusual shape and a small footprint, and it has several "sit targets" in various places built into it. It's pretty common for me to find myself sitting somewhere ON the house after I select something IN the house and not part of it, or getting "no room to sit" messages from things I know I can interact with, especially when I select them when I'm some distance away. It looks like when you try to interact with something while in the bounding box of something else that has sit targets the servers will assume you're trying to interact with whatever you're standing closest to instead.
  9. So, what you're saying is you don't like ban lines because the interfered with a piece of imaginary "property" that you "bought" in SL? ; )
  10. I'm guessing your MacBook Pro has two different graphics setups - one that uses the built-in graphics ability of the Intel main processor to save power, and a separate more powerful graphics chip that is used for more graphically-demanding applications. For some reason your viewer using the low-powered Intel chip. I'm not familiar enough with Macs to tell you how to do it, but you should be able to convince your computer to use the better graphics chip somewhere in settings. Do a search and see if anyone out there has the procedure for doing this. Once you do this you should be able to turn shadows, etc. on. Also, DON'T try running SL on this computer using battery power alone - most computers with "auto-switching" graphics will always use the lower-performance graphics option when not plugged into the wall.

    ocean

The "ocean" that surrounds most private islands is really an optical illusion. but there is some ocean you can go into. It has to be set up to be accessible though. In order to use the ocean it has to be an area on a server somewhere and someone has to pay for that. If you look at the map, you'll see that a lot of regions are surrounded by blank blue but some are surrounded by ocean areas that show some texture and have a name in the corner. You can go into those areas.
  12. Did you or anyone else try to rezz something enormous in the sandbox, or did someone try using a rezzbox for a large build serveral times in a row? There are circumstances where if someone manages to flood a region with more prims than it can hold objects already on the sim can disappear. The server SHOULD just stop the enormous object from being rezzed but sometimes something goes haywire. Things can disappear after a sim is rolled back to a previous state too but it has to be restarted for that to happen and I imagine you would have mentioned that if it had been.
  13. Most AO's are copyable and each copy can have different animations in it. You may have attached an older copy of the AO that was sitting in your inventory instead of the one you placed the animations into. See if there are more copies of in in your inventory and then see if any of them have your animations.
  14. Someone should point out that the L$3000 top IS a full-permission top meant for other clothing makers to use as a base for their own work instead of being meant as an end-user product though.
  15. I don't use much mesh clothing and I think the major problem I have with it is a lot of it looks fine when standing still but the body will clip through it in many poses. Alphas aren't always a good solution because it's very difficult to make a precise alpha in SL so it often either doesn't cover all the problem spots or is visible (well, INvisible) outside the line of the clothing item. I actually think old-fashioned glitch layers would be a better solution than alphas in some situations but I don't see them provided that often. I know the standard SL avatar is badly rigged (although it's improved after the changes in STORM-1800 which are currently being used in the Dolphin viewer and hopefully will be widespread soon) but in the end the standard avatar is what mesh clothing is meant to cover so I'd like to see clothing rigged to follow it as well as possible.

  17. Depending on how many people are in your group already, it might be simpler to make a new group for the members who DON'T get building rights and make that the open enrollment group, and then eject the members who don't get rezz rights from the old group (with a nice note explaining what's happening) and invite them to the new group. Then you could change the old group to invite-only.

  19. Most pet makers keep track of the animals on a separate server system that they own and is sync'd to your account so they know who has it and where it is. What kind of access do they want?
  20. You jumped to conclusions by saying ti was because of Labor Day, which Hitomi then latched onto. It's being removed implies that it was there was something TO remove, which there wouldn't have been if it was due to an annual holiday.
  21. Griffin Ceawlin wrote: Theresa Tennyson wrote: Francis Marcellus Church ... It's Francis PHarcellus Church. The only remotely "churchlike" thing about him was apparently one of his paternal relatives lived near a church a few hundred years ago when last names started being invented. o.0 His father was a Baptist theologian who purchased The New York Chronicle, a religious weekly, where Francis was an editorial writer. As an amateur genealogist, I find this stuff fascinating. I also find fascinating the ability of people to make stuff up off the top of their head. Oops, made the same typo in my initial post but corrected it there. I was referring to the fact that Bree was assuming that the good editor was a religious institution. And, of course, when he wrote the editorial he was at the New York Sun, which was a gemeral-readership daily published by his brother. I'm also fascinated by people's ability to make things up off the tops of their heads. However, I personally try to refrain from it.
  22. The shore line was peaceful and flat, and the calm sea bumped it playfully along the sandy beach. In the distance a beautiful island covered with palm trees and flowers beckoned invitingly from the sparkling water. "Nothing can possibly go wrong now," cried the Humbug happily, and as soon as he'd said it he leaped from the car, as if stuck by a pin, and sailed all the way to the little island. "And we'll have plenty of time,'' answered Tock, who hadn't noticed that the bug was missing--and he, too, suddenly leaped into the air and disappeared. "It certainly couldn't be a nicer day," agreed Milo, who was too busy looking at the road to see that the others had gone. And in a split second he was gone also. He landed next to Tock and the terrified Humbug on the tiny island, which now looked completely different. Instead of palms and flowers, there were only rocks and the twisted stumps of long-dead trees. It certainly didn't seem like the same place they had seen from the road. "Pardon me," said Milo to the first man who happened by; "can you tell me where I am?" "To be sure," said Canby; "you're on the Island of Conclusions. Make yourself at home. You're apt to be here for some time." "But how did we get here?" asked Milo, who was still a bit puzzled by being there at all. "You jumped, of course," explained Canby. "That's the way most everyone gets here. It's really quite simple: every time you decide something without having a good reason, you jump to Conclusions whether you like it or not. It's such an easy trip to make that I've been here hundreds of times." "But this is such an unpleasant-looking place," Milo remarked. "Yes, that's true," admitted Canby; "it does look much better from a distance." As he spoke, at least eight or nine more people sailed onto the island from every direction possible. "Well, I'm going to jump right back," announced the Humbug, who took two or three practice bends, leaped as far as he could, and landed in a heap two feet away. "That won't do at all," scolded Canby, helping him to his feet. "You can never jump away from Conclusions. Getting back is not so easy. That's why we're so terribly crowded here." ---- excerpt from The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster We're going to have to wait for Tuesday to see what the story is. Given that there was discussion as to what would be promoted on Friday at the server meeting, that everyone knew that Labor Day was, well, Labor Day and that I can see no history of the Lab not running Tuesday rolls due to Monday holidays (i.e. they rolled the servers the Tuesday after Memorial Day) I'm a bit dubious about your assumption.
  23. The land allowance included in your premium account would be 512 square meters which will support 117 prims. Additional land will cost more per month - there are tables that describe it. If you want to open a club, bear in mind that since Mainland regions have to take into account the possibility dealing with avatars on other regions there is a limit of 40 avatars that can log into the entire region (i.e. 256 meter x 256 meter "named" area). If you open a club and it's successful you may quickly shut down the ability of any other lot in the region to have visitors and your neighbors will want you to die in a fire.
  24. Bree Giffen wrote: Yes. That church is talking non-sense. It's just another veiled attempt to get you to accept their fantasy. Appeals to the betterment of mankind to support beliefs that hold humanity hostage. Just because someone says 'this is tied to that' doesn't mean it's true. Do you believe it? Or do you help it along? Bree, that was a fascinating reply. Francis Marcellus Church was the editor of the New York Sun at the end of the 19th century. That was an editorial he wrote in response to a little girl's letter asking about Santa Claus - it's quite well-known in the United States. The only remotely "churchlike" thing about him was apparently one of his paternal relatives lived near a church a few hundred years ago when last names started being invented. The reason I find your response fascinating is that it certainly looks like your response was based much more on your personal pre-held feelings about organized religon after having a Pavlovian response to the word "Church" than an actual consideration of the written words. I'm having a hard time seeing that as "free thought."
  25. First of all, calm down. A pixel tree is not anything to get an ulcer over. Secondlly, right click on it and try selecting "Return." If the prims making up the tree are actually counting against yours you can definately return it; if they aren't (they will only count if the "root prim"* of the object is actually on your land) then you might be able to return it anyway. Thirdly, if that doesn't work several third-party viewers have a feature called an "Asset Blacklist" that will let you select an object and make it invisible FOREVER or at least until you take it off the list. If you're used to the standard viewer I can recommend a viewer called Dolphin, which looks and behaves very similarly to the standard viewer but has some additional features. _____________________ * I just realized that a tree having a "root prim" is sort of appropriate. Sorry, it's early.
