This was not the 90s, was from 2007 on. People I know still think that about SL if they have heard of it.

Nope, none. Until recently, I talked a lot about SL to family and coworkers, and absolutely noone had any interest whatsoever. The people who didn't know about it thought the concept is ridiculous, and the ones who did had extremely negative opinions, mostly along the lines of it just being a sex simulation site.

This somehow strikes me as the *opposite* of support??? 🤔

If you have not already bought all the stuff you want, something to keep in mind that I don't think anyone has mentioned is that almost everything related to mesh comes in a demo version. So, you can gather up lots of stuff that looks promising and see if you can make it work the way you want. That includes adjusting the shape for mesh heads and bodies to your heart's content. Then, when you find the stuff you like, you go back and buy it. Most likely you can still use the shape from the demo, too. If not, you can write down the settings and use them on the shape that comes with your body or head. One other tip, if you get a mesh body and a mesh head, my recommendation is to use the shape that came with the body, and adjust it the way you want before you add the mesh head. Then add your mesh head and wear the shape that came with it. If you use another shape, your head will likely look horrible. Then, adjust the head parts of the shape to make your face and head the way you like. Finally, either keep wearing the shape you just adjusted for the head and make the body adjustments based on the shape you adjusted for the body, or the other way around. Others may have better suggestions, but that is what worked for me. It took me quite a while to realize I needed to use the shape that came from the head or just be hopelessly lost. Interesting. Most of that period is when I loved SL the most. I guess at that time I was more focused on the social aspects than on technical aspects, though I really really really hated lag. But that was pretty much from day one in 2007 through the last time I was in SL.

I think I would have to have dissociative disorder to actually date my main, but I have certainly had plenty of sex with an alt. For art's sake, though, of course. edit: And, I actually *could* date myself, I have the exact same identical avatar on two accounts. Same body, same head, same dimensions, same hair, same clothes, everything. If I had a twin IRL I would certainly date her, though, if we looked like my main in SL.

Maybe they need to improve system avis (for God’s sake at least fix the effing chest groove!!!!) and make everybody use those. Really, I had the most fun in SL before mesh bodies even happened. Of course, then all people who are in SL for the current graphics would be gone. That is the big problem, as is always brought up: SL means different things to different people, it is not like some game-game with narrow, focused design parameters and goals, and meeting the wants and needs of all the stakeholders seems to be a zero sum endeavor based on the current state of the environment.

So, walking in place and rubber banding are related to LL, and not whatever computer we have.

And then I have a computer that meets animat's specs, other than having 16GB instead of 32GB of RAM (and never go past using about 12GB no matter what or how many things I am running, so I am not sure what the 32 is for), a way faster than minimum internet, and STILL constantly experience lag, even in places that aren't crowded. I have to admit I run on high graphics, because I like things to look nice, but honestly I haven't found decreasing my graphic settings to help that much. I keep complexity at less than 100,000 and limit avis, and adjust draw distance down depending on what I am doing, but find lag an almost constant frustration. Another thing that is frustrating is trying to look at things while walking around; shopping is especially bad. IRL I can walk and look to the sides, but in SL your avi has to be facing things to see them (and don't get me started on stores having print scaled so small I have to zoom in to read it, and maybe even fiddle with my camera to get it close enough that I can zoom in enough). I guess I could have adjusted my camera so it looked sidewise, but that only takes care of one side. I realize this is a limitation of using a keyboard, but it is something that lowered my motivation to go explore or to shop. Probably VR lets you walk and look about at the same time, but that doesn't exist for SL, and I am not too interested in wearing a headset anyhow.

So, are walking in place and rubber banding related to low fps? I actually seem to experience both even when the fps meter shows 30-40 fps. I know that the lag at clubs is related to low fps, or assume it is. Another frustration is landing at a club and seeing body parts flying through the air for several minutes. Everyone is naked for a while, too, but that isn't as disconcerting as having enormous heads zooming at me. And teeth, OMG...

This topic seems to come up on a recurring basis. IMO, LL has its own priorities and is going to do what it is going to do. And I hear the people familiar with all the technical stuff saying it is too expensive for LL fix most of the issues, and that fixing the issues is incompatible with the flexibility that sets SL apart from game-games. That said, though, lag always was the thing I hated most about SL. Probably I am not using that term in exactly the right sense, because I include the 4 fps at clubs in that too. I stupidly used to think that LL would fix it someday, but finally let go of that hope. The thing that finally got to me, though, is something that LL either can't do anything about or is incompetent at doing anything about, or some combination of the two. I have not really been able to find anything of enduring interest in SL for years. Of course, things change, but the things I most loved about SL are gone and aren't coming back (yes, I am one of those). I tried developing other interests, but was not able to find anything that engaged me long term. Of course, it isn't just SL that has changed, I am older and I have changed, too. Unfortunately, SL and I have changed in diverging directions. Wrt to newbies, I am not convinced that a lot of new people are joining SL, or that the people who join stay. I rarely saw new people at the places I went. I do agree that a lot of the new people I see seem pretty lost. OTOH, I see a lot of month-old avis with full mesh bodies and awesome looks. I feel that SL does not make it easy to figure things out. Sure, they have the new resident orientation, but that is really basic. In spite of being here a long time when I got my mesh body, and even longer when I got my mesh head (and having experience with the mesh body), I had a really hard time understanding what to get and how to use it. I think LL has a Get Started page on the SL site, but it is Sign Up For Premium And Get A Linden Home and stuff like that. There is a wiki, which I find pretty awful. Maybe I have not done a good job of trying to find LL info, but anything I want to do means an internet search and a lot of digging to figure out what I want to do. I don't think I have ever run across guides and how-to things that just explain in simple terms how to do what I want. Same with finding things to do in SL. And the Destination Guide on the SL website is horrible, with mostly dead LMs. Anyhow, this was probably off-topic. I don't have any technical suggestions that LL could apply now that they don't have Sansar, or really any wish list that I have any hope of them fulfilling. I guess my point is that it seems like the things that would make the biggest difference to me are not going to happen, either because they are technically or financially unfeasible or because LL's culture does not value them, and after all this time, that probably isn't going to change.

Thanks for what you are doing now. I think a lot about the frontline medical providers, and the risks they are taking and the horrors many of them are living through. And of course those providing care in long-term residential facilities, who are often very poorly compensated in financial terms. However, those folks are at least somewhat used to dealing with that kind of environment and those kinds of risks. So I feel we also have to keep in mind the people doing things like you are that are critical, but who are putting themselves and their families at risk to support society instead of being able to quarantine themselves. And of course so many of those people, such as those working at WalMarts and the like, are very poorly paid also.
