  1. Star Trek Discovery. I didn’t want to get CBS All Access just for one show, so I haven’t seen it until now. It’s quite good.
  2. Four years? That’s barely broken in. Except for the mechanical hard drive. I’d do a surface scan of it, if the hard drive scan comes up with bad sectors, replace it. Samsung has some kind of utility for their SSDs that will tell you their health and whether or not it’s time to replace it. Definitely blow the dust out like everyone said.
  3. Oh hey, that sounds like me. If I say "run" I try to qualify it with something like "well" or "like crap". If I say it runs well, I mean you'll get what I think most people would consider a satisfactory experience, not a slide show. >15fps is probably acceptable for socializing or general use. I consider a smooth average of better than 20 very good, better than 30 excellent. I have a set of landmarks I'll check out to benchmark hardware. Author's Point, Pendle Hill, Nelsonia Safe Hub, NCI Kuula and Everwinter. I think if a piece of hardware can handle those places, it's probably good to go for SL use. With appropriate graphics settings, a lot of really old hardware can handle SL by that standard. And I don't mean bottoming out all the sliders, either where you get no windlight and all the circles are hexagons. It has to look good too.
  4. I've always considered the defaults and presets to be more like suggestions. They're a starting point, not the destination.Relying on them tends to result in a sub-optimal experience. As long as you have a CPU with relatively good single core performance and an Nvidia GTX video card that's not old enough to get a driver's license, you should be able to get a good looking and performing SL experience.
  5. Dang, I knew I forgot something at the store today. Remind me to pick up some Tang tomorrow, please.
  6. I've found you hardly need the most expensive system to run SL well, outside extremely elaborate builds or very crowded venues.
  7. Sorry, you guys don't get computers or Tang. You do get Disco though.
  8. What viewer are you using and what video card is in your computer?
  9. At its heart, SL is a turn of the century game engine, so as long as you turn back the clock on the graphics settings and use a period correct monitor it should run about as well as it ever did. At least in theory. Where it breaks down is there aren't any drivers for those old cards, so even if you can get them to run, they won't run it right. Most of them weren't that great for SL when they were new. Especially Team Red's cards.
  10. I did a bit of a snarky markup of the system requirements when LL announced they were dropping Windows 7 support about a month ago. Looks like they did remove Windows 7 and the pointless reference to the macOS 10.14 beta. It’s still a mess of useless. I’m not sure what the point of removing Windows 7 because it isn’t supported anymore while leaving unsupported Widows 8 and macOS 10.9 there. The graphics cards in the minimum requirements either won’t run Windows 10 at all, or they won’t run SL without some editing configuration files. The minimum Intel GPU should be the HD 4000 series. Intel GPUs shouldn’t be in the recommended list at all. The recommended video cards will at least run SL and support all of its features. Although turning everything on will bring them all to their knees, and none of them have gotten driver updates in years. The CPU and memory requirements are woefully inadequate. I mean, sure you can launch SL on an Atom processor, but that’s effectively trying to run SL on a cell phone.
  11. http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Third_Party_Viewer_Directory/SpeedLight LL must know something about it since it’s in the TPV directory, but the home page listed in the TPV directory is speedlight.io not speedlight.me
  12. Over here in the potato computer lab I have an Nvidia GTS 250, which scores a pathetic 875 and it is just fine for SL. No, I don’t run it on ultra, but I get a perfectly usable experience out of it and it still looks great. I see cards with the same scores that run SL vastly differently. Try it and see, keep your expectations in line with what you’re buying and I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised.
  13. It's a budget laptop that wasn't designed with gaming in mind. As long as you dial the graphics settings back appropriately it should be okay. It will definitely run SL, but not all the eye candy.
  14. Yes, when you try to run it and the Mac refuses to run it, open System Preferences, and in the security and privacy pane, click the button to open SL anyway.
  15. I am so glad I live in a country where we have adults running thin... Oh. Well crap.
  16. Not popular, just known. I think I've been to 1920s Berlin twice, but I know about it. But yeah, getting new people in isn't quite the same as attracting people who aren't in SL yet. It doesn't appear that's happening much either.
  17. If people who have been active in SL on a daily basis for more than a decade haven't heard of it, it might not be a great example of something that's going to attract a bunch of new people.
  18. I've never heard of it, either. If it's valuable enough to keep, it's also valuable enough to tell people about. Preferably before the doors get closed.
  19. I think it was a mistake to keep Chouchou because now whenever anyone's favorite place closes down it's going to be but they saved Chouchou! Yeah, Chouchou is nice, but so were the innumerable other places Linden Lab didn't pick up the tab for and save. Here's the flip side, if they didn't save The Refuge and Expansion, why should they make an exception for anyone else?
  20. Why didn’t you? Or anyone else who thought Drune was worth keeping around? I doubt Linden Lab has the resources to pick up the pieces every time a sim owner decides they’ve had enough for whatever reason. I’m not entirely up on the Chouchou deal, and I’m not sure why they decided to save it. Personally, I think that was a mistake.
  21. Not recently, I’ll probably start using them again some. I don’t want to see snarky or negative icons, that’s temptation I do not need.
