The recommended hardware list dates back to May 2010, so Linden Lab has literally every piece of mesh ever uploaded for reference. Basing system recommendations on what SL was like a decade ago is really doing users a disservice. I don't think it's even that. I think whoever updated them last cribbed from Tom's Hardware's best video cards for the money list and called it a day.

Yes grandma's 1994 e-machine was hyperbole, mocking what seems to be the belief that SL would run on practically anything if only Linden Lab would crack down on those dastardly content creators. The netbook thing? Totally serious. The minimum system requirements are easily met by probably every netbook ever made. Go look at the minium requirements, then come back and tell me where I'm wrong. I am not exaggerating one bit there. Hardware that's actually capable of running Second Life. Hardware that has Windows 10 drivers and supports all the shaders SL uses. That would be at the very least Nvidia 8000 series, AMD HD 5000 series or Intel HD4000.

No, but people who are running cell phone grade netbooks will look at the system requirements and think their craptops are capable of running SL and then see threads like this and think their SL runs like garbage on their garbage computers because Linden Lab won't restrict content to 16x16 textures and jellydoll everyone.

Because telling people Second Life won't really run on their cell phone grade netbook is the same as telling them they need to spend $3,000 a year on gaming PCs.

Or they could fix the system requirements page so people don’t think their 💩box that lags out on Minesweeper can run Second Life.

The best results I’ve gotten with that card have been creating an entry for Firestorm in the gaming section and letting the driver auto tune performance. I have never been able to get usable performance out of it with shadows on.

Go into the gaming section of the AMD Adrenaline control panel, and add your viewer of choice and let the AMD software auto-tune performance. SL viewers like to overestimate the capabilities of old graphics cards. If shadows and advanced lighting are enabled, disable them. In Firestorm, you should be able to use 768MB of texture memory. Do it.

I think you should consider transferring to another academic institution. Maybe you can find one that woodb a better fit for you.

The Quadros I have are a K600 (don't bother), a Quadro 2000 (an underclocked GTS 450) and a K2200 (more or less a 4GB GTX 750. The GeForce cards are a GTS 250 (1GB), GTX 275, GT 1030, GTX 560 (2GB) and GTX 970 (RIP). The K2200 is really nice and runs SL about on par with the GTX 560. Which is about what I'd expect, but pretty disappointing if you're looking for "jaw droppingly fast". I don't have a GTS 450 to do a direct comparison to the Quadro 2000, so it gets to fight it out with the GTS 250, and that ends really badly for the Quadro.

For people who don't read anything, they sure write a lot. Two hours in Gor was the most tedious year of my life.

Your computer seems like it's more capable than that. Before spending money on a video card, I'd make sure everything is working properly and your computer isn't suffering from a malware infestation. Run a SMART test (like Crystal disk info) and a surface scan on your mechanical hard drives, SMART test on any SSDs (if you don't have an SSD you need one), then do a malware scan. Open it up, make sure airflow is okay, all your fans are working and blow out any dust.

Generally, no, I think GeForce cards are better performers and much better values for SL. Personally, I think there are two good use cases for Quadro cards in SL. First is upgrading an old office PC that can't power a GeForce card. Old Quadros will run in practically anything. The second is if someone hands you the corporate credit card and tells you to go nuts (or the lotto thing). The Quadros I have are all older models I bought on eBay for pretty good prices, so take it for what it's worth. No RTX 8000s here. None of them are "jaw droppingly fast" compared to GeForce cards in SL. Sorry, as far as I can tell, the stories that Quadros have OpenGL secret sauce that make all your SL dreams come true are myths.

The one issue I have noticed is if I have single click set to walk to point in move & view prefs, sometimes clicking the arrow starts walking instead of clearing the beacon. Stopping and clicking again clears it like it's supposed to.
