  1. A person without options uses what's pushed at them. I'm guessing your options have been limited. Is it the general consensus that a person aught to not invest financially in their business, even in their hobby? When I first started out Blender was a contender, and not because it was free. Because of some limitations it was unusable in my work-flow so I landed on 3ds Max. I can appreciate your argument, that Blender is free, but one doesn't choose a tool because it's free, one would hope, but because it's functional. Blender is limited in its function with regard to Second Life and is why the targeted tools are necessary. Giving a "beginner" a single option seems to make sense to some people. I find this to be limiting, ignorant and even insulting. Do we suggest only free things to people because we think they are not willing, or able, to afford alternatives? While the tools mentioned that are targeted for Second Life are almost a requirement because of Blenders limitations, they are comparatively very inexpensive, including my very own "Bento Buddy". As we delve into the world of "free" I suggested, in no way, that someone aught to use 3ds Max, but someone chose to use it as a target for their posturing. But this subject is relative. The assertion of what's expensive is not in the same field of what's "free". They may seam like the same subject but they only seam that way. So, comparing the cost of using 3ds Max against what is free must feel like a big win, but it's meaningless. I once had a free toaster. It gave me a lot of grief when trying to use it for 3d modeling. Hay, but it was "Free"!
  2. Someone suggested that Blender is effectively required learning before diving into Marvelous Designer *sigh* Telling someone that they need to learn Blender first is suggesting that they hold off trying to learn a vary valuable tool before diving into another one that is unrelated. Blender is NOT related to Marvelous Designer, in any way, and is not required learning in order use, understand and enjoy Marvelous Designer. Blender is not even required in a creators pipe-line to create anything at all for Second Life. When I first started I was using 3ds Max since I purchased it as part of my work-flow in the field. It seams to me that anyone suggesting this aught to expand their world of knowledge, step out of their door and see that there are other things besides what they think they know. And don't forget to have fun on the way \o/
  3. Even at the time of the creation of this forum post another tool is available called "Bento Buddy", which I'm guessing is ok to mention, even though it is my creation, since others seem to feel free to advertise another product. Bento Buddy is constantly being updated and also exports "fitted" mesh and is the only tool that I am aware of that exports proper dae (collada) files, which can be used in any other sane 3d application. Bento Buddy currently contains a slew of animation tools to tweak your motion, capture motion from other animations and even converts well known characters, and their associated animations, for use with Second Life. *whew* Now you have options. Contact me in-world if you have any questions, need assistance or just wanna chatter. I'm very knowie \o/ Fun fun
  4. Hi \o Someone suggested that having full permission on a mesh allows you to download it from the servers, which is incorrect. You cannot extract a mesh uploaded by someone else, regardless of permissions, thankfully. However, I have the impression that you're talking about the classic avatar mesh provided by LL, in which case there are many resources available for download, even specifically prepared for Marvelous Designer, including arrangement points. Contact me in-world for download links and more details... ... and, have fun \o/
  5. Hay over there \o When we looked like clowns, and had less options to de-clown, I think we found it more important to be interested in others, rather than our SL appearance. Then there are those that simply don't participate any longer because things have "improved" and the "atmosphere" doesn't support social activities as well, at least for those. I guess that's my opinion of the transition but it doesn't really matter, there's always those out there that are here for various reasons, including making connections. I'm here for various reasons and connections is a good one, and is my list. I try very hard to not be Human, at least with my perspective of others. I work at these connections, trying to ignore what people are telling me about themselves and looking for the "inside". If a person is adept at hiding their inside then I'll move on but usually I can find it, I think. And that's the person that makes sense and it's usually pretty good even if the outside isn't de-clowned. I don't need a person to follow me, to go along with my interests and I don't need an ego stroke. These things are insulting to me and very irritating but I will try to be civil, though I will tell someone, when they push a little too much, to stop with the stroking, I have no use for it. No matter what the outside is, no matter what the clown looks like, no matter what the story is, there's always someone else on the inside. I'm looking for that one, and if you hang with me I'll find it. Now let's go have a samitch, I love samitches!
  6. I hate horror movies! But I don't judge, I gunna call you anyway haha here I go \o
  7. Hi I'm here. I'm stapled to SL. Shopping, eh... I could do it again I guess. Used to be fun. I like park rides and fun wearables and goofing around, laughing, exploring .. lotta people made fun stuff in SL we just gotta find it. Ok let's go find it \o/ Call me.
  8. Hi .. I could move in, I need a place to put my duck, thank you \o/ Call me, I have a fun phone.
  9. Hello \o I see profiles that tell people to not say "Hi" which I think is silly but if I find it i will certainly not say "hi" to you, thank you for the warning, I don't want to interrupt your important and fragile ego. I don't know what the intent is but I'll never understand humans and I try not to get too confused about it but it still gets to me at times. Those that put a ton of warnings and complains in their profiles are unlikely to get my attention as well unless I haven't read it first, and usually I don't read it first. I especially get a kick out of people telling me, from their profile, "That's all you need to know". As if I wanted to know anything at all about them. I really don't care much about who you are in your profile. We all want to tell a story, you told yours, now let's talk real. I am always dangerously busy with my projects but never too busy to goof around, kick rocks, laugh... these are the important things. I, too, find it difficult to locate those that just wanna appreciate the simple things. Say "hi", I'm here a lot. I have antlers on my head and I wear slippers.... yap, those are the important things.
  10. I have a fully articulated, and accurate, skeletal representation of the armature used in Second Life, along with a fully skinned Bento character, using the classic mesh provided by LL. This includes Bento head and hands and it's freely available for anyone to use as they please. You'll need to contact me in-world for a link. In order to make animations for Second Life using Blender you can pick my brain for the details necessary to get the job done. However, I, too, have a product that automatically converts foreign animations, including from the brand that's mentioned here, to be fully compatible with Second Life, on the Marketplace I'm willing to help others through the process bringing their creations into Second Life and explain how it may be done without the use of additional purchased tools. Though there are limits and I can explain the pitfalls and work required and very shortly, those interested, will see the limitations in order to make an educated choice of how to proceed.
  11. Avastar is not the only tool around for Blender to export animations for Second Life so the assertion that "you need Avastar" is incorrect. With that in mind, anyone wanting to export animations using Blender without "Paying a cent" can contact me in-world and I'll explain the process. There are some things you cannot do with out a lot of work but I can help you along the way so that you can understand what is, and what is not, possible without a special tool.
  12. I'll save you some pain. You won't easily be able to export your BVH and have it compatible with SL. There are manual ways to do it, and I won't get into the technical details here as I'm sure nobody really wants to know, except a few of us, so the easy solution is to use a tool that works, and for your particular purpose that would be for BVH. I do have such a tool that supports volume bones and Bento (if you want to call it that, it's just a skeleton) for translation and rotations supporting all bones and done correctly. If you want to actually do it manually I can point you in the right direction but I don't want to drone on about it here, most people just want the job done and don't care how it works. You can contact me if you like. \o
  13. Yea, it's not the only game in town anymore. You can contact me in-world, let's have a chat. You do not need a special tool to export "Bento" animations, but you're going to rip your hair out if you don't have one. "Bento" seems to be the running buzz term, but it's just a skeleton, it's not magic.
  14. It was my chipmunk. Chippy eats very loud
  15. Programming Blender add-ons \o/ Wiggling toes. Blinking.
  16. I don't really know what press releases are for but I can imagine that they exclude some predicted negative outcome for other interested parties. With that in mind I have to assume that it may also exclude information that may be a bit unbelievable, even if positive, for those same parties. And, while it sounds like I am optimistic, it's more that I'm not worried. Personally my investment of time in my projects associated with Second Life has proven to be useful elsewhere and any financial investment has been returned to me many-fold. While I would miss Second Life a great deal if it went away I do have the tools I have earned while involved in the platform to bring elsewhere. Now I'll do some speculation, based on information unrelated to LL, but it does seem rather similar so it's relevant... -- "Company" grows as a result of excitement of the potential use of its platform and interested parties decide to invest in the idea, and company. "Company" does not return profits in the way "investors" predicted. We now have these hangy things, "investors". that tell "company" what they can, and cannot, do. "Investors" see a new "trend", or they think they do, and decide to pull together with "company" to discuss possibilities to move, or expand, into the area of "trend". "Company" resists "trend" because, well, frankly "company" does, in fact, make seriously intelligent decisions. "Investors" insist that "company" generate a spin-off to expand into another "interested" territory. "Company" knows that this is a mistake and offers an exit strategy to "investors". That the "investors" agree to a buy out if this "trend", new expansion, goes sideways. "Investors" believe so much in themselves that they pretty much laugh it off and agree. "Trend" goes sideways. "Investors" sign to be released. "Company" is acquired. "Company" has a new boss but otherwise business as usual, but without bad decisions by a conglomerate of investors. -- While my little story may not be popular among those that feel a need to vent negativity and express blame and outrage, I believe it to be an accurate representation of what we've seen thus far. It's kind of simple really. If a person is effected so strongly by a change in their change maker they aught to have invested in two, or more. Yap... that's how I see it. Now, umma go buy me some fake foods, I love that stuff \o/
