  1. I wear womens hair anyway, far more often than I wear mens hair. As long as it's not too long (shoulder length or just below), it usually works well. That's a style I adopted in my first week in SL, a kind of rough rocker style, and I've stuck with it ever since. I only ever wear actual men's hair when I'm in a classy jazz club. Left to right: Doux (Tegan), Magika (Ash), Magika (Lydia), Truth (Mitzi), Exile (Betty). I also have loads from No Match, because they actually rig their long hair for male bodies too, but I don't like their textures any more. I have more hair than I have wearable clothing.
  2. I don't think the UUID encodes anything. It's just a unique but random hash. It most definitely doesn't encode gender, because your RL gender is not collected on sign-up, and your avatar's gender can be switched just by wearing a different shape. Your UUID doesn't change when you do that. Or ever.
  3. Yes! I have the Maldives set from Bazar, for when I have a modern style home. When I go vintage or rustic I use LAQ: https://marketplace.secondlife.com/p/LAQ-Decor-Bathroom-Cabinet-Sink-8-color-pack/5450127 There's only a sink and a toilet but they are beautifully made, and I use the bath from Nekka which is cheap, VERY low LI and has just the kind of slightly steampunk look that I love. https://marketplace.secondlife.com/p/2-LI-Bath-w-Shower-Curtains-any-texture-animated-scripted-mod-copy/4059240 I just mod away the weird marbled texture on the inside and turn it plain white.
  4. Not a lot really. I wouldn't recommend anything but Jake these days, unless looking for a muscular alternative to Aesthetic. Signature lost my loyalty when they raised the price and haven't released an update since. Clothing support for Gianni is dropping and nothing in particular is taking its place.
  5. Folks, this is a perfect example of "unable to tell the difference between "sex" and "gender".
  6. I'd say no - it doesn't fit the original question "If you use an avatar of a gender you are not..." She would be using an avatar that matches her RL gender (but not necessarily her RL sex). However, there are people who don't believe in gender identity and are unable to separate gender from sex - those people would disagree with me.
  7. What's this then? It seems like it's no longer possible to change your profile pic via the web on my.secondlife. Is this a bug or a permanent change? If the latter, I'm very disappointed. I can spare L$10 for an upload but there are many, many users who can't.
  8. My favourite is Radio Paradise. It's non-commercial (no ads) and they play a range of really good music. http://icy-6.radioparadise.com/mp3-192
  9. That's often a problem if the box is scripted to unpack when attached - no-copy items won't copy over to your inventory if the box is attached. And of course gacha items are always no-copy. So usually, if you rez the box instead of wearing it, and unpack it the old fashioned way with "open", the item should be there.
  10. I do this too. I admit, I like fatpacks, especially for Indra who will wear any colour as long as it's bright, but many of them are so ridiculously expensive, and it's ironic that the full perm template is often cheaper than a fatpack of commercial clothing made from the very same template. Tammi is awkward; she wears primarily red and black but she likes plaids and punk patterns and those are fairly rare in store bought clothing but with a full perm kit it's easy to do that. Would I buy single body fatpacks? If they are cheaper than a multi-body pack, and if it helps creators know how much I want to see more stuff rigged for Erika and Reborn, YES. In fact this whole conversation is making me consider re-starting the little template-based clothing store that one of my other alts has, and start releasing clothes based on this exact method. (Most of the stuff I've put on sale is stuff I originally made because I wanted it for myself). Just think - a mainstore which is divided into sections based on body size, so you can just go to the secton of the store which is for your particular favourite body, and you don't have to trawl through all the vendors looking and hoping to find something in a size you want. DING! I think we just might have a winner here. If they're priced right (at around L$500) the people who still want to buy for multiple bodies will still be able to get up to 5 different sizes for equal to or less than the price of most current multi-body fatpacks.
  11. I wouldn't normally have considered it either, not because it doesn't fit my land concept (I can change that to fit the house) but because it's so open plan. But at L$ 50 instead of 650, its a bargain too good to pass up, and it has tons of space inside. As well as the usual living room, kitchen and bedroom, I have a bar area, a cosy reading nook, and I figured space for four bedroom "areas" for me and my alts. I think it would look equally good as a forest cabin as well as a beach house. It's big though, 53m long, so definitely not for everyone, though it's narrow enough to fit on a 2048m parcel - but you won't get any garden besides the extensive patios.
  12. THIS. Mainland isn't broken, it's exactly how it's supposed to be. If you don't like somethig that your neighbour has rezzed, there are still choices. Derender it. Or move to a skybox. Or put up your own screen. Or sell your parcel and move. Go to Bellisseria or a private estate if you want "HOA" land with a covenant. People who demand rules and regulatons do not belong on mainland, it's not made for them and never was. Personally, I don't particularly care what is next door to me. To the east I have protected water. To the west I have protected road which is on a viaduct about 12m above ground level. I don't like the way the viaduct looks so I have a screen of trees and ferns over it. North is a nice parcel with a beach house and the guy who lives there has been there even longer than I've had mine (since 2009). South is a parcel that changes hands frequently and there's often a less-than-attractive build there. From the full-bright pink barbie house, to the current build; a GTFO depot on scaffolding which stands level with the road, way above my beach. I have a 2d screen in front of that, to block my view of it, but the screen is transparent from the outside. Anyone at the hub can see through it into my parcel.
  13. I have around 11k sqm in one mainland region, though it's not contigous. Half of it is a narrow strip of shoreline between protected Linden water and a Linden road. It's mostly water, and this is where I have my home. The rest is on a hillside on the other side of the region which is separated into separate parcels, two of which are rented out and the rest used by my club and Madison's alts. There's no specific themes between parcels. I love this land and would never leave it but I am in the habit of tearing up my parcel around 2 or 3 times a year and completely re-doing it. Sometimes I live on the shore, if I can find a house that's long from side to side and narrow from front to back. This week's 50L group deal from Trompe L'oeil is the Quentyn lodge which I've never considered before but it fits perfectly. The only catch is it's all open plan, upstairs and down. I'm not a fan of open plan and I tend to put divider walls everywhere, but this lodge doesn't seem to work well with them and there's no logical places to put them. So I may not keep using this house for long. At other times, if I want a house that doesn't fit on the lakeshore, I go up into the sky but I'm not as keen on that. I like to feel connected with the rest of the grid, and I don't get that feeling in a skybox.
  14. I can't imagine how difficult it would be to sail without parcel borders on the minimap, especially along mainland coasts. I especially like how Firestorm will highlight them if they have banlines up.
  15. No, but I do feel old when, in the course of my work in motor insurance, I come across a customer born in 2004. Yes, they are old enough to drive now. Yes they were born 7 years after Teletubbies.
  16. The friends list isn't really a friends list at all, and that't where people's expectations differ. It's really just a contacts list. A way of keeping acquaintances organised. If someone adds you to their friends list, it does not mean that you're instantly a best-friend-forever who will talk with you for hours at any time of day. If I add someone to my contacts list, it is usually because we've had a conversation that I enjoyed, and would like to have another sometime. It means that I think you're okay. But it doesn't mean we're friends yet and it definitely doesn't mean that I will drop everything I'm doing the moment I see you log in, and entertain you for the next several hours. A Friend is someone that I know well, I like a lot, I trust and hold in deep personal regard. It also requires that they think the same of me. If it doesn't work both ways, we are contacts, not friends. Friendship is not something you can pick and choose. You can't decide "I am going to be friends with you". It's something that happens over time. Weeks, months, sometimes years.
  17. What Scylla said. It seems like last time you successfully saved a pic, it saved in a directory folder that you've since deleted or moved, and BD can't find it. "Save As" will allow you t select a new locaiton. I also get that black screen of death when I'm trying to save at a resolution higher than my PC can handle. It will do up to about 5000 x 3000 but much bigger than that, and it will fail (and sometimes crash altogether).
  18. Personally I would be happy to buy fatpacks at L$500 for my girls at a lower price for one body only. Both avatars have one preferred body; for Indra it's Reborn, for Tammi it's Erika. So those are the options I'd look for first. They both use Freya as a backup, so if the preferred ones aren't available, thats the one I'd choose next. I don't delete old bodies; Indra sometimes even goes back to Hourglass, so I don't see any need for me to buy multiple bodies of one outfit, they can just wear whichever body goes with the outfit. I do the same for myself, switching between Gianni and Jake. I won't be getting Gen-X for either of them. I'm already happy with Reborn for Indra, and for Tammi, those skinny arms don't work for her shape at all.
  19. They can, and sometimes do. I once got a rollback on a mainland region (on which I currently own about 1/6th of it, though it was less back then).
  20. I'm in the UK so my peak online time in SL is usually noon to 4pm, though I'm occasionally on as early as 2am on my days off work. Funnily enough, I was on eatly yesterday and I was going through the events listings looking for something to do, and I did come across listings for a couple of Aussie clubs. One of them was called The Outback, the other I can't remember now. It's funny really; when I first started SL I was working a late shift pattern so my regular time for being online was "Aussie time" and I was a regular at a long-gone Aussie club called Butterflies, so many of my friends in those early days were Aussies and Kiwis. And now it's got me remembering Mabb Dilweg, and it's got me all ssd. There's one aspect of any online interaction that makes age an important consideration. When you're in your 50s or older, especially if you're a man, making friends online with people in their late teens and early 20s appears just downright creepy. As a parent, I would have been very uncomfortable if my daughter at 18-20 years old had had internet friends in their 50s or 60s. How can others, and especially the other person's parents, tell the difference between you being genuinely just friendly, and "grooming" the younger person for less innocent purposes? For this reason I am very reluctant to make friends online with people who are less than half my age (I'm 56), and the closer they are to 18, the more uncomfortable I get. So when I meet someone online, it's very important to me that I know at least what generation they belong to. I have many friends who are millenials; even in RL, many of my friends are in their mid/late-30s, but Gen Z is a step too far, IMO.
  21. It is; it was gone within 3 months of starting testosterone. It had such a profoundly positive effect on my mood, much more than I was expecting. I was able to experience how it felt to be not-depressed for the first time in my life. I didn't even realised I'd been depressed for so long until it was gone.
  22. I'm sorry this happened to you. If your land and objects were set to group, you can narrow down the list of culprits down to someone who belongs to the same group. It's a sad fact that this sort of behaviour is most often carried out by someone whom the victim thought was a trusted friend or partner. Anyway if it's only recently happened (after last week's region restarts - Tuesday or Wednesday, depending on which channel your region is on), I suggest putting in a support ticket and ask the Lindens for a region rollback. Or, if you're on private estate land, you can ask the estate owner to do it. This will re-set the region to the way it was at the last re-start, with all your buid intact.
  23. To answer the question in the title. I'm actually not sure, but whether I am or not, it wouldn't change the way I behave. I'm a transgender man in RL, and I transitioned late in life, so I lived as a woman (as best I could) for the first 40 years of my life. I really don't think I was very good at being a woman, and I was desperately unhappy. SL played a huge part in my transition. I joined with my first account in 2006, about a year before I started giving serious consideraiton to transition. Some of the people I met here gave me the confidence and support I needed to take those early steps. This account has been my main one since 2008. I started transition in 2010, and that same year I made Indra, my first female alt, but I felt uncomfortable using her. Once my transition was finished, and I felt settled, then it became less uncomfortable, and now I use my two girl accounts more than I use my main. It sounds odd, but I think during that in-between phase, I wasn't secure enough in my self identity. I felt like, "Am I trans enough, if I use a female avatar?" Now I am, and I don't feel any more like having a female alt invalidates me in any way. I don't change my behaviour or the way I talk whether I'm logged in as Lewis or Indra or Tammi. Have a conversation with any of us and you're having a conversation with me, the man at the keyboard, just the same as though you were in this room with me. Do my girls "fool" others? Maybe? I think Indra sometimes does and Tammi (at least sometimes) doesn't, but that's probably due to her body shape than anything else. Neither profile states my RL gender, but if asked, or if someone suggests a dance or something of that sort, I will tell them first. This sort of thing happens in RL transgender circles too, especially with younger people who are pre-transition or just starting. You see young trans guys barely into their twenties, strutting about and acting like a macho gangster, because until they've been on testosterone for a couple of years, it's often the only way they have to demonstrate their gender. Once the testosterone effects kick in, that behaviour usually stops. Oh yes, my daughter is like that, despite never having a feminine role-model in either myself or her father. Yet, she somehow turned into the girliest girl I've ever met. Anyway - if the belief is held that a hyper-feminine avatar must be run by a man, do they also hold that a hyper-masculine avatar must be run by a woman? Because I see the exact opposite there; most male avatars run by women are true gentlemen; a quality lacking in many male avatars run by men. I think I'm the same (and I wonder sometimes if other women think I'm a woman IRL) and I'm guessing it's because I've got the same background of being raised as a girl and living four decades in a world where I was percieved as being female and treated accordingly. It leaves a sour taste in the mouth over traditional masculinity. I have a part of my profile that says this: It makes no difference to me what gender my SL friends are in RL. If someone presents as a woman, I'll treat them as a woman, and vice versa. Then again, I don't think even that is much different. I treat people with equal respect whatever their gender.
  24. You're thinking like me - I was going to suggest a copse.
