Merry Christmas!

Recommended Posts

The commercialism side of Christmas was never really and still isn't a focus in my family, so I love Christmas, it's my favorite holiday and always has been since as long as I can remember. In my house it's all about the 4 F's, family, faith, fun and food. My memories both old and new are all baking, putting up and going around to look at people's Christmas lights, services and baking, did I mention baking? It's also the one time of year my sister gets a major vacation off work, so  it's the time we actually get to hang out and do fun things we don't often get much time to do.

It's exactly the opposite in the north hemisphere. Snow is the first word that comes to mind when I think of Christmas.

Snow IS a four letter word. and to some of us, it IS the vilest of four letter words!!! I consider "snow" to be Satan's dandruff!!. Even when I don't actually believe in Satan LOL!!!

The darkness of winter in the far north is also very brutal.

For some, maybe. Winter is my favorite season.  I drag through the summer, dreaming of a return to livable temperatures and the first snowfall.  Snow is beautiful to look at and it's quiet and refreshing to hike in. It's one of many reasons I live and vacation in the north.

It's personal preference. I despise every last snowflake!!!

I love the quiet that falling snow brings. Road traffic noises vanish as cars slow down and snow cushions the road and stills the air. Most of the wildlife is hunkered down or gone for the season, making it easier for me to imagine that the entire snowy universe before me is mine and mine alone. Most rot stops below freezing. In the few places where it doesn't, the cold has made it prudent for me to ignore it rather than fix it. It can wait until the muddy mess of spring when I'll once again undertake the futile task of preparing my home and yard for human visitors I'll never have and wild destructive visitors I can't keep away. In winter, those annoyances are frozen away.

I'll spend my winter days hiking through the snow, looking at tracks from the few creatures that brave it,  telling the story of my unbelievable luck in being born human. I'll return home at dusk to the warm welcome of the home which now keeps me safe from the killing cold. I'll make dinner in the oven rather than on the counter and I'll crawl under a pile of blankets as I watch the dying embers in my fireplace.

Does it get any better than winter for us?

I can get into winter & the snow...the quietness...the separation from the usual clatter of busy life as I'm snuggled up with a cozy blanket and warm tea., safe...

But in the back of my mind I always know...if I go for a walk and shed my coat for a mere 30 minutes, I'll be gone from this world.

Last time we had snow where I live, it turned to ice and couldn't go to work for 8 days because in the south the snow removal sucks. That was just at the end of having 12 days off for the holidays.. I was ready to go back to work.. hehehe

I could drive around because Jeeps are awesome, but  so many couldn't make it to work that they just shut down until everyone could get there.. lol

Yeah, snow is wasted south of the Mason-Dixon line.  Even before it turns into ugly stuff like slush, people don't know what to do with it. Snow is best when it's light, fluffy, and can swirl in the air. Great to ski on or hike in. The heavy wet stuff can be a nuisance unless you're into making snow forts and snowmen.  It can give winter a bad name, sadly.

Down here they don't know to stay off it while it's snowing so that it can melt.. They start driving on it packing it down, then we get a cold freeze that won't let up for like a week. So it's all ice then.

That's sort of what our winters have been like for the last ten years. It snows a little overnight, then warms just enough in the day to melt slightly and occasionally drizzles to help it out, then freezes hard overnight again when it drops to -5C to -10C. It's like trying to scrape an inch of concrete off the car after a few days sat unused. It's years since we had a normal, heavy snowfall. This pattern is much worse than that.

Like you, winter is my favourite season though I love all other the seasons almost as much.  Mostly, as a season comes to an end I'm looking forward to the changeover to the next.  I do get a little season fatigue by then.

I agree.  The end of a season gets wearisome.  Unfortunately, winter transitions into MUD season, which my least favorite, so that changeover is not fun.

When I lived up North, I used to go out barefoot in the snow. It was easier to find all the frozen hoboes that way.

What does it feel like to have Christmas in the winter?

Im in the southern hemisphere and we have it in the summer so snowmen, snow decorations never made sense to me.

Sunburn, bbqs and beer makes sense to me.

I was thinking that the Southern Hemisphere should do Christmas this time of year, but then even in December it’s warm here in Florida, we adapt.
