500 to 1 :o

That will be the next big SL business...scripted bot friends...🤖 You can choose their appearance and behaviour (serious and quiet, or funny and extrovert), even down to how long they wait until they IM you when you log on...and they won't defriend you if you ignore them for weeks ;)

oh wow i'd be finally able to get real friends :SwingingFriends:

I just logged in to my platform, saw all the useless junk I produced over the weekend and just stood there for minutes shaking my head while I was brewing my morning coffee.
Then I logged out.
Am I a bot now?
I did not contribute to the social side of SL and not to it's economy.

A bot is an avatar controlled by an external script or application. "Scripted Agent".

Absolutely correct. They are robots, and robots are controlled by programmes, either external or external-internal hybrids; i.e. they are scripted (programmed) agents.

I know a bunch of agents that are logged in 24/7 just for the traffic count, and I'm certain they are logged in with multiple very light viewers (Radegast), which means they are not bots because no programme controls them. They have to be logged in and placed by hand. They don't use Speedlight but that's an even lighter viewer that can be used to log multiple avatars in 24/7. They stay logged in even when the computer is turned off. Such avatars are not bots either.

The word 'bots' doesn't describe what it used to describe, but we don't have a word that means what people usually mean - except 'scripted agent'. Perhaps people should start using that term when it's what they mean.

I think the humans outnumber us bots!

Don't trust the humans, they are crazy!

How can we tell if a dot is a bot? One indication might be where it is.

There's no reason to have one or two bots in a Bellisseria Linden Home. They're against the covenant as well. So very few of those green dots in Bellisseria would be bots.

There are unlikely to be bots at shopping events or many stores (unless that store has a CSR bot or sells bots). So few of the dots in store and event regions would be bots.

Roleplay and AFK sex places probably have some. What percentage of regions are RP regions? What percentage of  green dots in Adult regions are bots?

Stores were one of the main reasons for using traffic bots, and I don't see any reason why that would have changed.

I never sold something to a traffic bot, as far as I know.

Do you go shopping? The only bots I ever see at a store is one standing behind the counter with some scripted responses to common customer questions.

Stopped by a store yesterday.  There were 5 avatars off to the right in the water, sitting on floaties.  All were starter avatars.  There were also about 10 underwater on the other side of the store.  Since there is no way for us to tell if they  are  Registered scripted agents, I call those bots.  They're there to boost traffic so I could assume they aren't registered. since those wouldn't count in the traffic.  Whether they are scripted or not is also kind of irrelevant.  Maybe we can just call them illegal traffic avatars?  It's Scandalizing.

No I don't go shopping :)

Traffic bots are normally hidden, usually high up in the sky, so you wouldn't see them.

But..but..the "starter avatars" could have just been lazy new Alts!!

But..but..the "underwater avatars" could have just been playing "Tiny Empires"!

..is usually how the counter-arguments go..

They were all 5 months old, too.

I really wanted to know your intent. You show a map picture showing Tiny Empires players. That's what those are, this has been discussed to death over and over and over.

Accounts that use automated functions, such as arranging themselves in circles at the bottom of the ocean, fit LL's definition of "scripted agent", or bot. Just because they're being used for Tiny Empires doesn't make them not bots, by LL's definition.

Because it's against the rules? It's the whole reason for the registered as/not registered thing.

I was commenting on the post that suggested they wouldn't be found associated with stores. I meant that many store owners would use them as they always did, because that was the very purpose for most bots. Whether or not they are actual bots or legal avatars logged in with thin clients wasn't the point. I do know that stores still use traffic avatars, actual bots or otherwise.

If you're a tech wiz this is already possible. I've actually made NPC's like this at Kokoro. Dressed them up how I fancied, designed their personality for the AI language model. I have already been called a stupid idiot by one of my npc's and hit with a chair (I was trying to get them to kiss me). Perfect bashful npc 10/10 she's perfect.

I wonder if some stores like that have lost much of their real traffic because of poor choices in the past, so now they feel a need to artificially inflate their traffic numbers?

In some cases, I bet they got "advice" to do it.  The three options I see are:

- See someone else doing it, decide to do it too

- Get "advice" to do it from someone else

- Come up on your own with doing it <= seems least likely

I really don't know why stores do it anymore.  People go to events.  If they see something they like from a specific store, they might go check out the rest of that store.  That's what I do.  Or, I'm only at a store to pick up something from one of the weekend sales.  I don't search, using search, to shop so to me, inflating traffic numbers (which really only effects FS search) seems kind of pointless to me.  If someone is using the websearch then the stores will show differently than in FS.

The store with the bots shows as 3rd under Clothing in FS Places search.  Under Clothing in websearch, it's not even on the first page.  THAT is why people still use avatars, scripted or not, to inflate traffic.  There is also no way to report those places.  LL employees don't even know it's going on since it's only noticeable in other viewers.

If this is a store that's been in SL for a long time, they might have decided on their own to use bots to inflate their numbers, because this used to be a more common practice. It's a shame, but I think often the creators who complain most about falling sales or their competition making more sales than them, have actually done this to themselves somehow. They might have been popular in the past in part because they had a big freebie section, for instance, but then they decided to change their whole store design and make it impossible to find  their freebies.

I think we're talking about the same spot.  There was not really too many people actually IN the store shopping.  Even in the free section, there were a few avatars sitting on pillows with similar looks.

These underwater ones don't even appear...

Hmmm.thumb.png.9bc2653e55c9f7051698c6646e997ad4.png

But at least the ones on the floaties do!

I really don't think many stores do this anymore.  At least, none that I have seen.  Escort clubs are notorious for parking a couple dozen in boxes as I've shown before.

Only slightly off-topic:

I thought of a way to control the Bot population.  Require Bots to be "Born" from other Avatars!

This would create an entire Bot sub-economy:

- People would pay to get (and stay) pregnant to have Bots, as "Surrogate Mothers/Fathers" for Bots

- This would create a demand for Bot Midwives

- Bots would need to "age" after they are "born" in order to be "mature" enough for Bot Duties

- Bot "Birth Control" would be required if you did not want your SLex to result in Bot-Babies.

Instead of Bots controlling US, WE would control THEM!

And you could make extra money from tummy talker adverts 👍
